Universal Board Rules

Access to the Boards is a privilege, not a right. Moderators will evaluate all posts based on the Universal Board Rules and unique sub-board guidelines, and punishment will be at their discretion. Disciplinary action for Boards behavior may extend to in-game accounts where required. Rules subject to change.

If you have questions or concerns about a rule, a removal, a punishment issued to your board profile, or are merely seeking input on whether or not content you wish to post is permissible, you are welcome to reach out to the moderation team on the Discuss the Boards board or on the Moderation Discord.

Always be respectful to players, community members, moderators, and Rioters.

Punishment Escalation

The typical progression of punishments is as follows:

  • Warning
  • 1-day boards suspension
  • 3-day boards suspension
  • 7-day boards suspension
  • Permanent boards suspension

Again, this is the typical progression. Exceptionally problematic behavior may result in an escalation of one or more steps, and sufficient periods of good behavior can help restore your account's status.

The Good Stuff

When you choose to participate in a discussion with the rest of the playerbase, always try to be respectful and receptive to another player's point of view. Also, be mindful of how you present your point of view. If a player feels strongly on a subject, don't get caught up trying to have the last word. Just state your side and exit the conversation gracefully rather than give them the opportunity to pick a fight.

When you provide feedback, be it to Riot or another player, make sure you take a holistic approach. If you give only negative feedback you may alienate the community and drag the discussion towards confrontation. Moreover, people are simply more likely to listen to your perspective if you present yourself in a calm, well thought out manner.

Don’t shy away from your feelings, but be straightforward, specific, and respectful when sharing them. Try to keep your feedback direct and concise. This is a much better way of expressing your concerns than an irate tirade.

Remember that joking around with your friends is a lot different than making a glib remark at a complete stranger. While we want you to feel comfortable and have fun on the boards, we’re not okay with you ruining anybody else’s day, so take a moment to consider if your remarks could be taken in a way you didn’t intend and seek to clarify your message before sending it.

League of Legends is a team game, and the boards are an extension of that community. With that in mind, it would behoove you to adopt a cordial demeanor and attempt to make friends. If you have a good relationship with the Boards community, you’re more likely to get good feedback on your posts, and more likely to have a good time overall.

Seek to offer constructive advice in a civil and friendly manner, and understand that things you find obvious about the game, the behavior system, or the Boards community may not be obvious to others. Have a little patience and try to help the player reach a better understanding. At the same time, don’t be discouraged if they aren’t receptive. Some small percentage of players won’t want to listen to your advice, no matter how politely you try to lend a hand. In these situations, simply exit the conversation gracefully.

Upvotes and downvotes are intrinsically tied to how threads and comments are perceived. It’s easy to simply downvote something you disagree with, and upvote things that support your views. We can do better. Consider upvoting thoughtful discussions and comments, even if they disagree with your perception of things. The more valuable conversation we have on the boards and the more that conversation is recognized as a good contribution to the community, the better everyone’s board experience will be.

If you share our vision of a board where players exercise good sportsmanship, help each other improve and form lasting friendships, you've got to start living the dream before anybody else is willing to do so. Nobody's asking you to be perfect, but we do want you to, whenever possible, strive to uphold the same standards of behavior that you expect everyone else to maintain.

So, remember! Stay positive, remain calm, and keep to the rules!

The Bad Stuff

Do not post content intended to insult, belittle, disrespect, or intentionally offend other community members as individuals or as groups. Criticism is an important and useful method of feedback, but must be respectful and constructive in nature. Non-constructive forms of criticism (such as questioning another poster's intelligence or requesting the firing or removal of an individual) are violations of this rule.

No spamming or trolling. Some common examples of these behaviors are listed below.

  • Posting content not related to the discussion.
  • Posting a discussion or comment repeatedly, or across multiple sub-boards.
  • Posting designed to bait conversation or falsify content.
  • Posting designed to spoil things (movies, shows, books, etc.) for other players
  • Posting repetitive non-constructive or low-effort content.
  • Bumping of discussions while adding no meaningful content.
  • Excessive emoji / icon spam.
  • Necromancy of old discussions.

Do not post or engage in discussions of religion, ethnicity/race, sexual orientation, gender, politics, or real-world social issues. Real-world emergency situations will be allowed as long as they do not relate to the issues above. If you are unsure if your content is permissible, ask us on the Moderation Discord prior to posting.

Inappropriate discussion topics may be subject to escalated punishments, depending on the content in question.

No advertising product sales, trading, reward programs, or gifting of any kind. No advertising transactional services offered by individuals or companies.

No belittling or shaming a player for their champion pool, rank, playstyle, or match history.

No personal attacks or witch-hunting, for any reason. Do not make posts accusing another player of causing a negative in-game experience, cheating, trolling, or any other malicious activity, even if you have hard evidence. Posts calling out other players for inappropriate names are likewise forbidden.

If you see or hear about another person breaking the rules in-game, send a ticket to Player Support. If you see or hear about another person breaking the rules on the board, report the post in question or come to the Moderation Discord. Both of these approach can also be used for inappropriate names.

There are cases where the term "hate speech" may not be fully appropriate, but the language is still discriminatory and offensive when used negatively in regards to an individual or concept. Do not use any language intended to express contempt for an individual or concept on the basis of ethnicity/race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, etc., even if intended humorously or jokingly. This includes, but is not limited to, examples such as those provided below:

  • "gay"
  • "retard" or "retarded"
  • "jew"
  • "autistic"

Pejorative language is usually subject to escalated punishments, depending on the content in question.

Do not use alternate accounts to post rule-breaking content if you have an account serving a Boards suspension. Do not post rule-breaking content on behalf of an individual serving a Boards suspension.

The Really Bad Stuff

Do not post content directly or indirectly attacking any person or group on the basis of ethnicity/race, sexual orientation, gender, or religion. This includes “casual” uses or “reclaimed” uses of words commonly associated with this behavior, as well as circumventing the boards filter by posting modified versions of said words.

The single exception is posting chat logs in Player Behavior while seeking community input on your behavioral logs. Other uses of this language, even on Player Behavior, are prohibited.

Threats of any kind will be handled differently depending on severity, but all posts of this kind will be removed. Extreme instances will be escalated to the proper authorities.

Do not post content directly or indirectly encouraging any person or group to self-harm, nor content discussing self-harm. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Encouraging others to hurt themselves.
  • Posting statements of an intent to harm yourself.
  • Making jokes about self-harm

If you are considering self-harm, please be aware that neither Riot nor the boards is able to provide trained assistance in these matters. We encourage you to seek help with a trained professional.

Do not impersonate another community member, player, moderator, or Rioter.

Do not post content containing pornographic material, links to NSFW content, sexually explicit acts, or real life depictions/descriptions of gore, death, horrifically violent acts, etc.

Do not post personal information belonging to yourself or another player. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Real names
  • e-mail addresses
  • Addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Facebook profile links

The sole exception is for streams/fan pages/names belonging to individuals who have opted to reveal this information to the public.

Do not post content related to illegal or malicious software, hacks, exploits, non-approved 3rd party programs, or pirated content.

If you would like to report an exploit or hack, send a ticket to Player Support.

Do not post content related to free RP or phishing sites.

Do not post content related to illegal activities or plans, including drug use. Posts about illegal activity will be escalated to law enforcement.

Do not post content advocating or soliciting violations of the Terms of Use, Summoner’s Code, or Board Rules. Players encouraging this sort of behavior will be punished as if they had engaged in it themselves.
