Why do people glorify "breaking the meta"?

I get that off-meta picks can work just fine, and I get that people should be allowed to play something they can have fun with. But when someone instalocks an off-meta pick in a role someone else already called, you can't complain about them without being called a "meta slave" and a "sheep". Never mind that instalocking a role is terrible sportsmanship, the fact that they broke the meta somehow means they can do no wrong. If the same player instalocked someone meta, suddenly they're a toxic asshole. So why are off-meta picks an exception to this?
