Okay, first things first, Bard's ultimate. Are you worried that some of the less-savory players in today's community might use Bard's ultimate as a griefing tool? Did such a worry ever hinder Bard's design process?
new
Hey there! I'm not too worried - I think the first couple of days he's out (and the first days of his free week), we might see a little of this while people get it out of their systems. But, trolls are gonna troll, and if someone is going into a match with the intention of playing AGAINST his team, it's going to be a bad time no matter what abilities he has. Also, I didn't let worries about griefing steer my design process. I have to make a character assuming players are using teamwork and playing together - if I try to hedge my bets and make a spell un-griefable, it often ends up with a worse version of the spell, or one with unexpected power in weird places.

What inspired you to start developping a champion like Bard? Also, closely related, could you go through a few of the iterations that ended up being scrapped but were still interesting, maybe why they were scrapped?

Hey, Funkyycat, thanks for the question! I was the principle concept artist on Bard. Bard actually began quite a ways back when I was an intern here at Riot. I began pitching the early incarnations of what would become Bard in the summer of 2013 with the hopes of creating a champion from the folklore of our world. We thought about applying him to a single faction but ultimately decided he would be best served as a character that would exist in lore throughout Runeterra. Over time he did go through a number of iterations but he actually "took shape" visually fairly early on (with of course the support of the other artists). In terms of his lore/personality, he really took shape with the work of Loping Cinder and the design contributions of Rabid Llama.
new
There was an earlier iteration of his concept where Bard was more obsessed with wandering and collecting than he is today. His collection passive, and the idea of him roaming, are rooted in that earlier concept. I think the concepts still fit today, they're just a little more abstract than they were before :)

Is there any connection between Bard and the once celestial being Soraka{{champion:16}}?
new
Soraka definitely knows of the Bard.

I'd definitely be curious to know more about that. I'd also ask, as a follow-up, whether this "celestial-ness" has any connection to, say, Demacian holy magic, or **[Shuriman "cosmic" power](http://leaguefactions.net/12-secrets-of-shurima/)** such as the type wielded by Xerath. Kind of trying to get a sense of Runeterra's cosmology. **EDIT: And below, Jaredan provides an enlightening explanation. Thank you! That definitely helps address the issue I rant about in the remainder of this post.** As an aside, one major critique I have of Runeterra after the Great Retcon is how extremely disjointed it is. I remember laughing at Elise's login screen monologue: "The Shadow Isles: some say they don't exist!" Um, Elise, who says the Shadow Isles **don't exist?** Anyone who watches a League match knows the Isles exist. There's a Field of Justice in the Shadow Isles. Pretty sure people know that the Isles exist, however spooky or mysterious they may be. Then came the Great Retcon, and I understood why she'd say that. But I have to say, I deeply dislike the idea of a world made up of Champions and factions off in their own miserable little corners, ignorant of one another's existence, and without any reason to interact. I mean, do Demacians even know Ionia exists? (I imagine the answer is an unsatisfying, "Some tell tales of a mysterious land of magic and mystery!") Do Demacia and Piltover trade with each other? (Likely answer: "Perhaps sometimes adventurous merchants travel between them, but for the most part they're much too wary of each other to have regular trade.") When Bilgewater, the premier maritime city-state, was attacked by zombies for the millionth time, why didn't anybody do anything? (Anticipated answer: "They don't know it exists!"/"They might just be stories."/"Nobody cares about Bilgewater."/"They're too busy with their own problems to help anyone.") It's a very stark contrast to the League of Legends universe that actually contains a League of Legends, and has a "fantasy Babylon 5" thing going, with factions and Champions having frequent cause to deal with one another. All in all, it feels like a universe where Champions, well, have approximate knowledge of many things.

Bard traverses all planes that can intersect with Runeterra, so he is certainly linked to that degree, but he's not restricted only to Soraka's plane of origin. Runeterran magic has many different aspects, origins, and foci. Bard exists and journeys across many realms and planes, which is the difference in his concept of "celestial" as compared to the specific focus of each of your examples. It certainly makes sense to see things like Shurima's sun-disk as an attempt to tap into one part of a celestial power.

It certainly makes sense to see things like Shurima's sun-disk as an attempt to tap into one part of a celestial power. Thank you! This is a really awesome and informative answer. I was pleasantly surprised to see it. It definitely helps bring Runeterra together lore-wise. And I really like the idea of the ancient magic of Shurima, now mostly lost, being capable of invoking this kind of reality-bending cosmic power. Not only does it amplify the significance of Shurima's fall, but it also really strengthens the themes of Shuriman Champions. For example, Nasus, Renekton, and Azir become more "godlike" in this interpretation, and Xerath's all-consuming ambition (and, arguably, his arrogance) makes more sense: to him, all these other mages are petty conjurers, and Runeterra's magic has become pathetically primitive since the secrets of Shurima were lost. What I'm also gleaning from your response, and which I also like, is the idea that Bard is a native celestial being with access to many planes of existence, whereas Runeterran mages generally can at most tap into one aspect of the broader cosmos: Ionians have their astral magic, beautiful but cold and distant; Demacians have their "holy" magic, pure but simple; Shurimans have their solar magic, awe-inspiring but also treacherously powerful. These are all aspects of this "celestial" plane, but they're all to some extent trapped in Flatland, so to speak. I now feel slightly embarrassed about my rant above. I think perhaps I've been throwing rocks at Narrative's windows too long; it's now a habit. I've left it in my post because it is still genuinely a concern of mine, though I'm becoming more and more confident that Narrative will address it.

I think your angle on it is a good one. And no worries, I really appreciate the sentiment, but as we've both said before, we're all just passionate about story.
I don't think you can/should classify magic that narrowly. I think it comes down to individuals rather than a cultural thing.
Jaredan (NA)
new
I don't think its limited to the examples given, and the individual certainly makes a big difference.
So ... I just wanted to say that from the moment he was released I was in love with Bard. Madness is probably my thing, see. My first thought about his abilities and character model were: "So they took Gragas, and Soraka, a Zhonya's Hourglass and a Heal Shrine; and literally said THESE THINGS NEED TO BE ONE THING BECAUSE REASONS", and it has not been disappointing to watch the rest of this wonderfully mad creation's story unfold. Really, that's all I had. ... I love you Riot. - Probably an Eldritch Dragon Man Squidtopus

(This is my list of questions concerning gameplay and balance) Again, sorry about the long list of questions, I’m just really interested in Bard and his design: He’s definitely one of those champs that, even though I’ll probably suck with him, his design is interesting enough that I’d love to learn how to play him properly. You don’t have to answer them all at once, just whichever ones you feel like answering. --- **I’ve noticed a couple of times while testing him on the PBE, that Chimes might occasionally spawn under the enemy’s turret,** which is a bit frustrating. **Are there any plans to change this, or do you feel there’s an acceptable risk/reward with this?** --- Bard is definitely much more different than previous champions Role-wise, on account of being the first support (That I’m aware of) designed specifically with roaming in mind. **How do you imagine him in pro-play? **While his abilities can be very useful to a coordinated team, I might worry that an enemy pro-team might pick up easily on “Bard’s roaming, DESTROY THE ADC!” --- I always ask this, but **were there any previous versions of Bard’s kit you feel like sharing, and perhaps why they didn’t get the cut?** Rabid Llama talked about a point where Magical Journey was his ultimate, and could be used 2-3 times in quick successions, for instance. --- **Which ADC’s do you think will pair well with Bard? **I know Caitlyn has been mentioned, but I might also think that Ezreal or maybe Corki would pair well with him: They both have escapes, and a method for farming at longer range (Though Corki needs to wait until six for the most part), and are Caster ADCs, so they benefit a bit more from the extra experience they’ll get for when Bard’s away. --- Also, on a personal note, I have to say I liked Rabid Llama: He answered my stupid balancing questions about Bard’s design on the PBE, which also helped me understand a bit more about his visions and intentions for Bard.
new
Hello again! **Chimes spawning under enemy tower:** It is intentional, that Chimes sometimes spawn in dangerous spots - either under tower (there's only one potential spawn place there) or in the enemy jungle. This is to give the Bard player something to strive for. The chimes you collect feel all the sweeter when there's some you can't get to, and when you DO manage to get the towerdive kill and grab that #!@* chime on the way out, it feels even better. That's part of the reason chimes are frequent, small power - I can afford to have the spawner put them someplace weird or inaccessible occasionally, since it will even out over the course of the game out of sheer numbers. I call this design technique "cheating" >_> --- **Pro play** I'm very interested to see what pros do with him. He's the kind of character that I put these tools on without a full idea of what the possibilities are, just that he can do crazy things. It's possible that in his current state, pros won't be able to find a use for him - I'm making some guesses at how things will play out, and if they turn out differently we can apply nerfs and buffs accordingly :) My theory on it is that the teams will have to find a way to take pressure off their ADC (killing at level 2, shoving wave, early jungle ganks) in order to "unlock" Bard from having to stay there. From there, I think Bard scales really hard with teamwork, so I think they'll be able to figure out all sorts of strategies from there. --- **Previous kits** Hmmmmm... a few of the abilities I tried were super cool but not good fits for Bard, so I think I'll keep those a secret for now (they're up for grabs for other designers, too - we have a very collaborative process). Early on, when I was just looking for an in-lane hook, I tried out Bard as "a support for assassin players." He was a close-range trickster, with a stealth that he had to channel (like Recall) to enter, a directional knockback, stuff like that. He would clear the ward from his lane brush, and then zone the enemy team. The idea was that if you ever lost sight of the guy, he was just *gone*. The kit had a BUNCH of gameplay problems (it was my first stab at a kit) and also ended up fitting Bard's thematic and character pretty poorly, so it got scrapped. --- **Good ADCs for Bard** The ones you mention are good for the reasons you mention (Cait/Corki/Ez, for safety). I've also seen a very successful Sivir/Bard lane, since she can shove the lane so hard that the enemies can't get any pressure on her. Also, strangely, Kalista/Bard has seen some success internally - you don't make much use of her W passive, but her scouts, mobility, and shoving power keep her fairly safe, and her ult can pull back Bard from a mid-length roam very quickly. Edit: Aaaaaalso, I'm really curious if it will turn out that Bard+is a good lane. Bard/Velkoz or Bard/Cass might be a thing... gotta get that sweet sweet solo lane XP, after all. --- Thanks! You ask interesting questions, so I'm happy to answer them. (Also, you were lucky enough to post right after he released on PBE - I got buried in bugfixes soon after, so to anybody who felt neglected on the PBE forums: I'm sorry! D: )

Oh boy, I've been super pumped about Bard for a while now. Honestly, his character design is so mystical and great plus the mask is just so beautifully simple. I've never cosplayed before but I think if I start I'd make a Bard costume; I have ideas already jotted down for what I'd do but all I need is money, time, and people to go to a convention with me :P. Anyways, I have a few questions regarding Bard and hopefully they aren't too difficult to answer so here we go :D 1. Could you give us anything on why Bard's face is carved into the rocks of Summoner's Rift? Are they created by Bard as a way of going 'Bard wuz here', are they carved by people who believe in Bard and use them as shrines, do they have to do with the new lore and why champions fight on top of a mountain for no reason, or was it just a teaser and they're being removed soon? If they aren't being removed and become cannon there must be a reason behind them. 2. Can we get official word on what it would be like to hug Bard? He seems to be very blimp like in his movements so I'd imagine he'd be squishy like Baymax :P. 3. Can Bard be understood? I know that we as retconned summoners can't understand him but if Bard needed to could he speak to someone in a way they would know what he was saying? 4. Is there any reason Bard doesn't have an in game emote or idle animation where he plays his horn like in the new cinematic? Seems like it would be a cool thing for him. This last question is for someone else who can't be here for the Q&A. Mostly his/her words but I edited a little to get rid of extra fluff: 5 . "Bard sounds like a very boring main character: He pops in, does something and pops out. Nothing will ever go wrong for Bard without being unstoppable, because if it is stoppable Bard already stopped it. He is basically omnipotent? What kind of stories is Riot expecting to tell that are interesting with Bard if he seems to be omnipotent?" Super greatful for you guys taking the time to answer our questions and I can't wait to play Bard. I've got the IP saved up and the teambuilder quene is calling my name :D.
new
Roosterbega, please. please send a picture when you cosplay Bard. 1. Summoner's Rift is the impression of the world of Runeterra, it is not a 1-to-1 literal representation. It was a fun tease, but shrines that the Bard does protect can bear his symbol. 2. Officially: it's like falling into a pile of puppies (no puppies were harmed during this hugging experience). 3. He can be understood. If Bard "spoke" directly to you, you would grok his meaning. 4. His Ult animation was inspired by the cinematic, but the in-game to out of game representations aren't necessarily 1-to-1. 5. Bard is not omnipotent, as a spirit he can be banished, powerful magics could potentially imprison him, and a force of equal power could possibly end him. Thank you so much for the questions.
new
Couple of questions: 1. Does Bard know Soraka since she is (was) a Celestial? Are they friends? Is it like a reunion now that he's on Runeterra? 2.Is it purely coincidence that the last two champs to be released lack a more traditional VO? Or is this going to become a new trend?
new
1. ???? 2. In a way it's a coincidence, but I think we're feeling more free to explore unorthodox approaches in our champion designs across the board. The idea that we can even make a successful champion without traditional VO is new - or one who's a pure beast, or is a floaty music-bag spirit, or who permanently binds with an ally. We're taking risks and doing crazy things, because we know our teams here can deliver on it, and that the players will accept it as the awesome thing it is :)
new
I suppose a better way to word #1 would be: Do they know each other, or do they know of each other?
new
Sorry, I was unclear - I understood your question, I just actually don't know :)

**What are Meeps? ** -We know they are some sort of spiritual beings* but what exactly are they?* -Why are they with Bard? -What do they do? -And why are they named Meeps? -Are they named that from the people who saw them? Can people even see them? Sorry but really we know how bard acts only intervening when necessary, not meaning when an entire nation gets attacked. But the Meeps seem....out of place.
Skeeziks (NA)
new
LANWhale, thanks for the question. I suppose the most basic way of looking at the meeps is that they are lesser spirits that are attracted to Bard's "celestial gravity". Something like those little fish that follow around whale sharks. They revere him innately. As to their name, yes they were named by the people who observed them. Loping Cinder is actually sitting right next to me. And he will undoubtedly say it better than I have. He says: "Meeps are definitely a contrast against Bard's stoic nature. But so are the little fish that follow sharks around." I hope that helps a little!

First off, love the concept of all of these new champs and their specialization. A lot of fun. Is this the direction that most of your new champions will be following? And are you trying to create new roles through these concepts, and If so, do you have any radical ideas that you are hoping to implement with new champions?

Bard doesn't belong to any one faction.
So that was Ionia in that video? Were they fighting Noxus? How long have these two nations fought each other? Exactly what was that artifact they were looking for?

Looks like Noxus to me. Black armor? Check. Angry juggernauts? Check. Lots of collateral damage? Check. Regarding the artifact: The power to cut a mountain in half would interest any warring nation.
Good Morning Riot! I would like to ask a few questions regarding Bard. 1.) In which champion is he related to? 2.) Is it true that only his Q (Cosmic Binding) has damage? 3.) Secondary to support, which lane can he be? 4.) From where did you get the idea of this champion? 5.) Will he be released sometime next week? 6.) What is his morale alignment Thanks ❤️ More power to RIOT!

Hey there! I'm the game designer on Bard, so I'm not the best to answer some of your questions, but I'll do what I can! 1) He's generally his own thing, not from Runeterra directly, as I understand it 2) His Q is his only active ability with damage, but his Passive (the Meeps) start doing some pretty significant damage later in the game. He actually can use them to clear minion waves towards end game. 3) We've seen some success with him in Jungle. His early ganks are pretty strong, but I'm not convinced it's a strong position for him to play overall. 4) As a gameplay designer, I drew inspiration from the idea of a character who's neutral in nature, and who's driven by a compulsion that nobody else understands. He *has* to be somewhere at some *specific* time to do something *very* important that looks kind of... pointless to everyone else. Nothing else matters to him, not the war going on, not the champions fighting on the Rift. Of course, this isn't possible to fully express in League - you need to support your team, fight in teamfights, etc. But, I wanted to try to capture the essence of that enough that the player of Bard might experience emotions similar to those in playing him. 5) :) ? 6) **Caveat: I am not a narrative writer, this is opinion!** Personally, I see him as Lawful Neutral, if I have my D&D alignments right. He acts in accordance with fate, or whatever, to make sure that Very Bad Things don't happen, but otherwise doesn't really care one way or another how things play out.
new
I see him more as True Neutral. He has his own agenda which has nothing to do with human laws or conceptions of good or evil.
new
Seems reasonable!

Are Meeps nature-spirits or celestial spirits?

Champion Designer here, so this is opinion, not canon! I see them as celestial spirits more than natural ones - they're Not From Around Here, but they seem to think Bard's a pretty cool guy.

How will Magical Journey work with certain knockback effects? Can Vayne condemn someone through the entrance of the portal? Also, will it work with player-created terrain, such as Anivia's ice wall? What about wall-ish terrain created by champions such as Trundle and Azir?
new
Champion designer on Bard here :) Knockbacks are a little awkward with Magical Journey. In general, the stop-on-wall ones will pop you out of the wall at the nearest valid location, which is *usually* where you expect and *occasionally* on the "wrong side". This is something I'll be looking to fix if there's specific spots that are especially bad. Longer ones like Headbutt tend to work better :) As for player-created terrain, I ended up deciding that it DOES NOT interact with it, mainly because it would have been strange to have the player-created terrain disappear so quickly vs. how long Magical Journey lasts. Especially something like Cataclysm, it can last for less than a second, compared to Magical Journey's usual ten seconds. (Confusingly, I decided to make it so that Bard's Q DOES interact with player created terrain. It didn't have the same problem - the interaction is instant, so the duration of the terrain's life doesn't have an impact)
new
Oh, yeah, and about targetability: I tried out having the spell make you untargetable, but it really perverted the use of the spell - it wasn't about moving yourself or your team anymore, it was about providing on-demand untargetability. It was only in for two or three tests before I got a resounding "no way" from the rest of the team. There's a lot of odd interactions and outright bugs that would be avoided by making you untargetable, but I just don't think I can make that work :(
new
I have to believe you have to click on the portal to traverse through it, in which case a condemn or any other knockback would NOT shove another player through the portal. And believe it wouldn't work with such things as Azir or Trundle's walls, although maybe Anivia I could believe, but it would be a very short portal lifespan. Maybe it will only be left to the map terrain and not thought other champion's abilities. May want an answer from a RIOT member, but I am leaving my opinion here anyway.
new
That's correct - you have to issue a movement command (right click) to move, so you can't be shoved into it. It doesn't work with created terrain, specifically because of the lifespan. It was something I went back and forth on a few times in my head, but decided just avoiding them was the better option.
new
Hey, I have a couple of questions (conspiracies) regarding Bards lore: 1. Could Bard possibly be from or have any relationships with the Glade (the dimension pix brought Lulu to). He seems like he could have whimsical ties and his interdimention travel could be between there and reality. 2. Against my first question, could Bard be a Darkin? His appearance and kindness suggests otherwise, but it never states all Darkin are like Aatrox. And he shares two similarity with Aatrox already: both have changed the history of Runeterra over history by intervening and both also have Jax in common; On the league website Aatrox is hidden in the back of Jax's splash art at the top of his page, and also Bard extremely resembles Jax's appearance. I know I'm grasping at straws, but could all three of them be Darkin, or could Bard have some relationship with the Darkin (perhaps a Lightkin, lol).
Jaredan (NA)
new
1. Bard moves between dimensions like you or I move between rooms of our house, there are few places that Bard hasn't visited. 2. Bard changes history in a very different way than the Darkin (love the idea though).
new
Was Bard partially inspired by some of Hayao Miyazaki's movies? (Princess Mononoke in particular.) And, was Bard's lore particularly hard to work with, considering he's some spirit guardian kind of guy who doesn't have too big of a tie with most current League of Legends champions. And lastly, Bard, to me, feels like what Udyr (identity wise, not gameplay), was supposed to be. One with the spirits who lives to protect ancient artifacts and keep the world in balance. Was Udyr a part of the inspiration from him, or did you just happen to come up with another "spirit-y guardian"?
Skeeziks (NA)
new
Hey, King! Thanks for the question! I will try to speak to the art inspiration for him as best I can. As to the Miyazaki/Ghibli influence, absolutely! I am a huge fan of their work to the point I would say Miyazaki is a part of my DNA as an artist! To me it's an honor that you see any connection there at all. Aside from Ghibli I would say I thought a lot about Norse mythology and looked at characters like Odin as well. I would defer to Loping Cinder for the lore stuff, but yeah he is definitely a unique case. Loping Cinder: "The hardest challenge was successfully communicating Bard's concept to the production teams responsible for his execution." Thanks again!
Diabols (NA)
new
Bard: Mountain was done by Studio Mir, who also created Bardatar: The Last Meepbender. *that is a pun* The champion was likely more based off of that style of storytelling, rather than Studio Ghibli.
new
We love both Ghibli and Mir. Bard has a lot of creative DNA.
Why are so many new champions role-specific? We need more cho-gaths, who can fill many different roles and lanes.
new
This is a very complex question, and I won't be able to do it justice (I'm neither as experienced nor as well-spoken as others on the team). I will say, we're very interested in adding new gameplay and strategies to League through every new champion (and rework!) we release. Recently, we've taken a strategy of focusing on one existing role or position in particular with each character and defining them entirely around that, which I think is a strategy that leads to the effect you're talking about. I'll actually keep this in mind as I start my next champion, and see what other folks on the team think about it.
new
How will his ultimate function with things such as Anivia's eggform or sustained ae effects such as Swain's ultimate or Karthus defile? Or say Karthus gets ulted by Bard after he dies. Will eggform cd continue to go down and such? Will the damaging effects of sustained ae abilities continue as usual? Will the timer of a dead Karthus become a stasis value or will it continue to tick down while he becomes unable to cast anything? I'm assuming it will function with abilities and such the same as Zhonyas, but what about the dead Karthus concept?
new
There's a few rules to it that I think sort out your above questions: 1) AoE effects don't hit untargetable things (persistent AoE is the same). Vlad / Fizz, for example, can dodge a Brand W. 1a) Bard Ult is an AoE effect, so it misses untargetable things (dead Karthus is not targetable) 2) Bard Ult does not freeze cooldowns or buff timers (Eggnivia will continue to revive) 3) Bard Ult makes you invincible, so AoE sustained effects wouldn't hurt you even if they COULD hit you :)
new
And concerning Zac's passive? Since blobs are fozen in place it delays the moment they "meet". Does it impact his reviving mecanism, or does the fact that the blobs touch eachother is purely "cosmetic" and there is a hiden timer thet triggers the revive?
new
I actually went and special-cased it a couple of days ago so that the blobs are untargetable/invincible but still slide towards each other. In a purely mechanical sense, the blobs "meeting" is just cosmetic and there's a timer running, but I thought it was important enough to preserve the visual.

new
So technically, if you wanted to, you could use Bard's ult on an ally with a revive passive that can be stopped like Zac or Anivia, and 'protect' them long enough for them to properly revive?
new
Yep! Not sure if it's the best use, but in that situation it would work. Similar to how you can Teleport to a Zac blob to make it invulnerable for a while.
I think what he meant to ask about for sustained AoE effects such as Swain, or Karthus, was actually asking if Bard ults an ulting Swain, or Defiling Karthus, will their abilities continue to be in effect, like with a Zhonyas? So if Bard ults an ulting Swain, and enemies then walk close to the Swain, will the crows continue to attack nearby enemies, and heal Swain like a Zhonyas?
new
Oh, I see - it should work just like Zhonya's in those cases, which I'm pretty sure means they'll continue to do AoE damage / send birds.
new
Hey, technical question : You said people still take damage while traveling through the E tunels. I wonder what happens in a few cases : - if they get hit by bard's ultimate, since is stops "dashes" - if they get "displaced" during travel, do they ignore displacement or get kicked out of the tunel following the regular "dashing through unpassable terrain" rules? - if they die during travel, do their corpse stay stuck in the terrain? - if they are/get slowed do they travel slower in the tunel? - if there is an annivia wall blocking the exit, do people stay stuck in "buble form" unable not only to move, but to cast too?

I wonder what happens in a few cases : - if they get hit by bard's ultimate, since is stops "dashes" Bard Ult doesn't stop it because, um... Bard magic? I special-cased it because I'm a jerk. It was the cooler thing to have people pop out the other side all golden and invulnerable than have them get shunted out. > - if they get "displaced" during travel, do they ignore displacement or get kicked out of the tunel following the regular "dashing through unpassable terrain" rules? Depends. Knockbacks that are "long enough" will work normally. Knockups or short knockbacks will "pop you out" of terrain like you said. In 5.6, it should pop you out a little more nicely, assuming I can get it working bug-free :) > - if they die during travel, do their corpse stay stuck in the terrain? If you die, your corpse is in terrain - seemed like the least surprising thing to do. If you go into a "Zombie" state (Kog, Karthus, Sion, Yorick) you actually complete the Journey and pop out the other side in zombie form. Zyra's special, in that she gets popped out to the nearest out-of-terrain spot in order to turn into her flower. Gotta put down roots, after all. > - if they are/get slowed do they travel slower in the tunel? Nah, it's treated more like a dash than walking. > - if there is an annivia wall blocking the exit, do people stay stuck in "buble form" unable not only to move, but to cast too? I'm *pretty* sure it will find a place to put you, either stuck between Anivia wall and the terrain, or otherwise popped out on the far side of the Anivia wall. You might be stuck in place, but you'd be able to cast. By the way, it seems like you could have a future in QA :)
new
Did you guys get the idea of Bard's ultimate from Zhonya's Hourglass?
new
Bard's ult was inspired by the question "Can we make a non-combat support ult that still feels powerful?" Now, I say inspired, since it's not exactly a "non-combat" spell in its final form, but I was looking for a spell that didn't fit the usual support pattern of "big disable + damage, kill the guy you hit" as a pattern. The "zhonya's" effect is one where yes, you've disabled your enemy, but both their team and yours has time to react. Often, you DON'T want to focus on killing the guy you hit with Bard ult, you want to try to whittle their team down around them.
new
Where did you get the inspiration for Bard?
Skeeziks (NA)
new
This is an interesting question. Visually speaking, his initial inspiration was to bring an element of Runeterran folklore to League. When I first started drawing the thing that became Bard a lot of the things that inspired me (Ghibli, Norse mythology, etc.) naturally seeped into the design. Those aspects kind of got filtered through a number of iterations and conversations with other artists, trying their suggestions, moving things around, adding and taking away elements until he arrived at what was largely his final design. (It was actually a couple of our environment artists that designed his final instrument.) Our writer, Loping Cinder, and designer, Rabid Llama, then played a large role in "who" Bard became from their respective aspects as we all got together to make a champion and they both brought a number of influences and inspiration points along with them. Geez, I don't know if that gets to the heart of your question but I hope it at least helps a little! Thanks for posting!

Do you think Bard will be viable in any role other than support?
new
i don't think that is good idea, since collecting chimes make him stronger, staying in lane is not ideal, and i believe his jungle clear speed is not fast enough to be Jungler. However i will love to see if anyone try it :)
new
How exactly do Bard's tunnels react with other champion abilities, such as poppy and vayne E, Jarvan's cataclysm, Blitz and Thresh hooks, etc. Also, could reksai make a tunnel through Bard's tunnels? Finally, how would vision and auto's work? Will you be able to see champions in Bard's tunnels and if u go through a tunnel does it cancel auto attacks?
new
The interactions are all very situational - in general, the game doesn't "like" characters being inside terrain, and will find somewhere else to put you. Blitz hook works great, though, just like you'd expect. Reksai can totally tunnel under Magical Journey, but if you mean make a tunnel entrance, travel through Magical Journey, make a tunnel exit, I'm afraid not :) Vision is generous around tunnels - if you can see either end of it, or are close to the wall where it's going through, you get vision of the whole tunnel PLUS anyone travelling inside it. Missiles will chase you into it, and you can even attack people as they're travelling.

What's the longest portal Bard can put down on the map?
new
i think Bard can make the longest portal on the outside wall of each bases. :)
new
The longest ones are along the top/bottom edges of the map, going from just inside base towards the lane. The ability actually has a max range (2600, so like two screens) because of cases like this, otherwise you'd be able to go unbalanceably far :X The longest wall that I know of in the normal playing field is the thin wall across from the Dragon/Baron pits, which goes into the nearby lane through the big "triangle" part of the wall.

1. What made you go with another champion without a talking VO? 2. How did you ultimately decide on a celestial champion? 3. What was the hardest part in bard's kit to make? 4. Was Bard's kit basically the same during creation? 5. Was there anything you learned while making Bard that you'll use for champions in the future? Thanks for taking the time for answering our questions!
new
i can answer question 4, we changed Bard's kit many times :) there was time Bard ult was a Global shock wave which gives buffs for ally and silence enemy team :)

For context, I was the one deciding to change Bard's kit, and Jino was the one who had to change all of his VFX work to fit my changes :X

Looking deep into the character I get the feeling of a caring guardian, who's existence is too look after the ancient powers of this world (Maybe look after Nexuses? Nexi?). Yet I also get this contrasting, uncaring feeling, as if the mortal plane of existence is of no meaning to him except for the moments that history wants shaped. Did you design the deep personality of Bard to be this contrasting way? He is clearly no hero who saves mortals, yet looks after this world with a sort of delicacy. He also reminds me a lot of the character Lu-Tze from Thief of Time. Ever read any Terry Pratchett? If so, I'll happily fill up this board with discussing his books and characters. I'm a student director, so learning about new characters is fascinating. That's why I love watching you bring out these new characters, Stories, Art Styles, Characters, Sound ideas, everything. 1. What counts as a devastating enough event for Bard to intervene? Shurima, the Watchers, and the Shadow Isles were all included in his original teaser, did he intervene in those in some way? If so, how? All of those events seemed to have pretty catastrophic results, especially Shadow Isles and Shurima. 2. Do champions like Tryndamere and Varus hold resentment against Bard for not assisting them during the destruction of their villages? 3. The meeps are from the "spirit world", is this spirit world a place for the spirits of the dead or is it some separate plane of existence inhabited by spirits such as meeps?
Jaredan (NA)
new
Hi Blood Mefist, 1. Although those events certainly were catastrophic, especially in a localized sense, Bard's intervention, from his point of view, was not required in the specific way you may be thinking of. I don't want to include spoilers, I'll just say Bard was witness to those events. 2. Tryndamere and Varus have plenty of resentment without adding Bard to their list. Their stories operate on a very powerful personal level, but not within the parameters that Bard serves his function. 3. There isn't a direct correlation between Runeterra's dead and the existence of meeps.

1). You said in the reveal, and it is shown in Mountain, that Bard is a "Caretaker" and protects the world(s) from falling out of balance. If he has returned to Runeterra that means something is threatening the balance. What is it Bard has come to stop/observe? 2). In the video Bard: Mountain we see an old man carrying the orb. When Bard takes it he mutters something along the lines of "I will die without it" or "We will". I also noticed that the Elder's appearance is quite similar to Ryze's Tribal/Human skin. Is this Ryze before he found his scroll? If so, Who else does Bard have direct connections with?

2) The old man carrying the orb is not Ryze. Cool idea regardless.

Hello! What is that mystical sphere that the old man is holding in "Bard: Mountain"? Is it Bard? Is it a part of Bard? Or is it just a magical object he needed to complete the triangle and the old man helped him? That old man said at the end "I die without it" or something like that... did he fail his mission and Bard came to finish it?

The sphere is a dangerous magical amplifier. Regarding: "We'll die ... without it." The sage failed in his duty when he tapped into the egg's power and took a life, resulting in the destruction of a nearby mountain. Buddhism is a wide and varied religious practice. So I wouldn't project Bard through that filter. He is clearly interested in serving the greater good, no matter how cold or distant that may make him.
Does Bard tie into the fabled so-called "reinvention" of the lore?
new
Bard is very much a part of the current story of Runeterra.

Okay so... 1. What ARE the meeps and why do they follow Bard around all the time? 2. Since you mentioned that Bard and Soraka are "Celestial Beings", do they know each other? And if they do, what's their relationship like? 3. How many shrines can you throw down in one setting? 4. I get the music (as some bards use music to tell their stories), but what does telling stories have to do with their namesake? Does Bard tell stories on the side too? What is his connection to those that call themselves "bards"? 5. What exactly was that space stone thing we saw during "Bard: Mountain"? 6. Since you mentioned that Bard only appears in Runeterra whenever the cosmic balance is threatened, is there a reason that's he's on Runeterra now? Or he is just there because he wants to be? Sorry for all of the questions... I'm just curious and excited about this big whimsical ball of beard-y joy you call a support.
new
Hi, Game Designer on Bard here! 1. At a high level, Meeps are lesser spirits that are attracted to Bard for whatever reason. I like to think they're his groupies. 2. Not a question I know the answer to! 3. He's limited to three healing shrines at once, just like green wards or Cait traps. Putting down a fourth destroys the oldest one - although, protip, healing someone "directly" cheats a little and leaves the other three alone :) 4. The idea behind his name, as I understand it, is that the people of Runeterra just didn't know *what* to call this music bag spirit man thing, so they just used the word they had for "travelling musician". I like to think that his "true name," if he has one, would be impossible for a human to comprehend and take three eons to pronounce. 5. I don't know the details, but I know it would be a Very Bad Idea for Noxus to get their hands on it. The villagers there were using it responsibly, Noxus isn't known for using power in moderation. 6. This is actually a question I struggled with a lot making his kit. What brought him to Summoner's Rift? Why is he fighting? He can travel through dimensions, how can he ever LOSE? The answer is that Summoner's Rift is just an idea, it's a stage to present the abbreviated stories and personalities of these characters who belong to a larger, longer story.
new
(Hope you don't mind if I do follow-up questions/comments) 1. So they love him for his music xD Dumb question, but what are his thoughts on them? I mean, I know he lets them tag along, but does he enjoy their company? 4. Oh, that's interesting! Instead of the bards taking his name, it's the other way around! How does he feel about mortals giving him a name? Does he even care? 5. Is it something we're going to hear about later on or no? Where did he take it? Also: Is the "mask" his face or just a mask?
new
1. They are attracted to Bard's energy. While the Meeps are separate entities, they've traveled with Bard for so long they might as well be his beard. The relationship is mutually beneficial (as is interpreted by his in-game abilities). 2. He doesn't care.

What if one of my teammates is being ganked and he was forced to use Zhonya's, then Bard ulted on the pursuers but his teammate, while in Zhonya's, was ulted as well. Will he be in stasis as well as the enemy? or his Zhonya's will prevent him from being affected from bard's ult allowing him to escape while the enemy is in stasis? Sorry for my English, not my first language.

This is interesting! For Bard's Ult to hit, the unit must be targetable. Zhonya's makes you un-targetable, so, Bard Ult does NOT hit the Zhonya's ally, and he comes out of Zhonya's while the pursuers are still stuck in Bard Ult.

Hi! I'm wondering how his portal is going to work on howling abyss. I mostly just play arams. Is that move going to be completely useless? There aren't really any walls for him to travel through there.
new
I'm curious to see how he does. I think you'd put points in E last, but there are a few walls you can hop through: -From the base area most of the way to the front turret by "cutting the corner", so he can get back to lane quickly after dying -From one middle brush to the other, through the "gap" in the bridge -Through towers, which isn't all that useful >_> If he's trash tier in ARAM, I'll tweak his collection passive and meep passive to give him the power he needs, rather than making a whole new E :)
Sorry if I missed it, but if there's 1 Bard on each team: - Do they both have vision of the same Chimes? - If one Bard takes a Chime, does it disappear for the other Bard? Also, Chimes give Bard mana, movespeed, and experience, right? So as the game progresses: - Do Chimes give more mana and experience? Or are they always a percent of maximum mana/experience? - If so, do existing Chimes scale in mana and experience with time, or does that only apply to the time at which a Chime spawned? (For example, would a Chime that spawned at 3 minutes give the same amount of mana and experience as one spawned at 10 minutes if you were 10 minutes into the game? Or would it always just give the same base amount?) - Do Chimes appear more/less often? Sorry if these questions are confusing! Keep up the good work, Riot! {{champion:51}} *tip*
new
Every Bard has their own chimes, so no need to fight over them. The map starts getting a little crowded with two Bards :X Chimes currently give flat XP (20). The XP just acts as a little incentive, not a main source of levels, so it's just there to compensate Bard for the time spent out of lane. Supports move around the map a lot naturally at later levels, so the incentive isn't as necessary :) The mana is Percent Missing, so it scales as you get more maximum mana. There's no explicit scaling per chime, so it doesn't matter how "old" it is, either. Chimes appear at a pretty constant rate, once they start. Thanks for the questions! :)
new
What about a "One for All" type situation where you have a team made up entirely of Bards? Do teammates share the same chime pool or are there different ones for different teammates? Do chimes appear in proportion to the number of Bards on a team? One could imagine letting one Bard collect all of a team's charms and become an ultimate destroyer of worlds.
new
Everybody gets their own chimes at the moment... although that could be pretty awesome for One For All. Will consider it if/when that mode makes a return :)
new
You've outdone yourselves yet again Riot. I can't wait to start playing him. I have a few story and design questions regarding Bard, you don't have to answer all of them. 1. What is that green ball that sits in Bard's horn? When I first saw the thing, I was confused as to what he was even holding. He holds it like a flashlight when he walks. From the cinematic I figure it must play some important role into how he does his abilities but I'm not entirely clear as to what it does. 2. Why are the Meeps attracted to Bard? Does he provide them with protection? Shelter? How much is the rent? Is it an apartment complex or does each Meep get their own estate? Or is that all bogus and he is a sort of Pied Piper? 3. I am one to love sort of enigmatic characters that it feels like the mystery that surrounds them only seems to get bigger the more you try to understand them. My question dealing with this is, just how deep is the mystery hole that is Bard? And are you willing to preserve that mysteriousness in order to maintain Bard's identity? 4. There are so many characters I can see that resemble Bard in the creative world, but one that I would love to see a skin spin off of is Skullgirl's fighter Big Band. They both even have similar sillouettes. Can we expect to see a sort of jazzy themed skin? or even a marching band sort of guy where the Meeps are other members of the marching band? That's all I can think of for now, I'll ask in another post if I can think of anything else. Once again, I look forward to playing this champion. There are so many times I want to just leave the bot lane and be like "I must go! My planet needs me"
new
I don't know the answer to most of these (sorry!), but I wanted to say that I hadn't heard of Big Band until you mentioned him just now. What a cool character design - I definitely see the similarities! Skullgirls has a great style. I think Jazzy Bard would make a great skin, I'll be sure to pass it along :)
new
1. The green ball that sits in Bard's horn is a harmonic key that splits layers of reality and taps directly into the magical friction that all worlds emit. 2. Meeps follow in Bard's wake like dolphins follow a speedboat. It's fun. 3. I'll die before telling you everything.

Oh boy, I've got a lot of questions to post... I think I'll have to split them up into seperate posts... I know Bard’s definitely intended to be a mysterious, otherworldly character, so you may not want to talk about him too much, but whatever you can share would be appreciated (Even if it’s intentionally vague). And I apologize about all the questions; he’s just a character that I’m really interested in. --- **Does Bard have any relation to Soraka?** I feel like Bard would have *some* connection to the Stars that Soraka follows and gets her powers from. If so, could you explain in any more details? --- **How did you choose the name Bard for him? ** --- **Are chimes something that Bard creates or summons (He has a few of them on his person), or are they made by his followers/people who want to honor him? What is their relationship with Meeps, or is it just something like “Meeps are drawn to/like the sounds of the Chimes”?** --- ** Can you confirm or deny that Studio Ghibli’s artstyle influenced Bard’s design or not? ** --- This is a bit of a strange question, but **is it intentional that Bard’s design reminds me of Santa Claus?** They both have big white beards, mostly red clothing, pointy hat, association with bells/chimes, etc. etc.? Or is it all just a coincidence On a related note, Santa Bard should totally be a thing next Snowdown, even if it’s just a cheap recolor: His W could leave presents, and someone suggested his Magical Journey being a chimney/fireplace. (That's most of the Lore/design questions I wanted to ask; Gameplay stuff I'll put in another post)
new
I can't speak to most of this stuff (I specialize in the game mechanics part :) ) but I do know that we had a Bard pod meeting one week where we had him walking around in game, and someone said "Um... this may sound crazy, but does he look like Santa Claus to anyone else?" You're right, he has the beard, and the red, and he even carries his instrument up on his shoulder like Santa carries his bag. He had a *little* more red on him at the time, so we toned that down. We tried other color schemes, too, but we ended up liking the Red/Gray/Brown the best, so we stuck with it. It's totally not an intentional thing, but he does have that Santa vibe down.

Hey, Siachi! I can answer a couple of these. As to the art, Studio Ghibli is certainly a huge influence on me and my art and they are certainly an inspiration for Bard's visual design. As to the name, Bard, I would defer to our writer for a more in-depth reply, but we thought about his name from the standpoint of 'what would Runeterran's who encounter him name him?'. Since he is a mysterious, otherworldly entity we felt it was thematically on point to come up with a name from that perspective. Thanks for posting!

I really like Bard, he just feels so unique! **Lore Questions:** * Where are the floating isles from *The Wonder Above* located? * What's happening in the events of *Bard: Mountain*? * Does Bard have any connection to Soraka? Does he know her? * Are there more of Bard's kind that are known to Valoran? **Gameplay Questions:** * Any scrapped abilities you can share? :D **General Questions: ** * Did you face any issues during his development?
new
Hello there. i can answer the question ; "Did you face any issues during his development?" His ult is the first spell in League of legends that has same effect on ally and enemy team, and does no damage, as a vfx artist, it was a huge challenge for me to show not-dangerous but celestial and universal feeling. :0;;; and new version of Stasis effect.

So, how do Poros get along with Bard?

Bard has no idea if you've been naughty or nice.

I like to think of it this way: If you haven't threatened the cosmos, you are on the nice list. If you HAVE, you're on the naughty list.

Will you be able to see chimes on the minimap or will it be an easter egg hunt?
new
yes. you will be able to see chime icons on the minimap
new
Hello, is it possible to pick up the enemy Bard's chimes (like Draven's Axe) or is it just for your self
new
you will not able to pick up enemy Bard's chimes. you will see different visual for it.
Why did you decide to start a new skin line with Bard instead of trying to continue / finish off olds ones? (Battlecast Velkoz, Dragonslayer Braum, Galactic Azir, Blood Moon Kalista, Eternum Reksai, etc)

I enjoyed the Bard: Mountain video, but i did not understand it all that well. It seemed like a lot of random things just happening and then poof bard comes out of nowhere. Any enlightenment on this would be great please? Thanks!

Noxian forces lay siege to a remote mountain village in the hunt for a magical weapon. When an elderly sage falters in his duty and unleashes the object's power, Bard is forced to steal it away from mankind.

I hope you still answer. I've got a Important Question for myself. Do you know the movie Princess Mononoke ? If yes, are these Ghost from bard inspirated by the Ghost from this movie : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/Mononoke_Kodama.jpg ? Or not? And this Login Music remember me of Portal. Inspirated too? Sorry for Bad English. And Please answer :(

We love studio Ghibli.
Skeeziks (NA)

Hey, BTL! To answer your question I would say that they are definitely an inspiration. Studio Ghibli is amazing and their movies have always inspired me and many of the others here at Riot. Did we set out to make kodama? No. We played around with a number of different versions of the meeps but in the end we needed something that was readable in game and so a simpler design won out. But yeah, it is absolutely fair to say that the kodama are an inspiration point! Thanks for posting!

I looked at the little video and I had a stupid but probably reasonable question. Since Bard is a powerful celestial being, and moved in only after he saw that the object of interest in the video was in peril over the issue that the entire village which safeguarded this object was in just as much danger (if not worse), could I safely assume he's a stereotypical narcissistic self-righteous star child deity with his own personal agenda which forgoes all else for the sake of pursuing a greater obscure goal?
Jaredan (NA)
new
Bard's goals are in no way obscure to him and they are important on a grand scale. Bard not getting involved, or perhaps even fully understanding, the battle in the village is due to his perspective, not because of a moral choice.
new
So in essence, he sees neither side as good or bad, but when massive potential calamities arise, he'll be there to put them away.
Jaredan (NA)
new
Pretty much, in this instance. It's as if you saw two kids doing tug-of-war over a grenade, you don't get into which kid is right or wrong, you take the thing that goes boom away.

I tried my best to skim through all the posts, so I'm sorry if this has been answered. Was Kokopelli or the Pied Piper in any way some of the inspiration behind Bard? What is the story of what the original intention for this instrument playing champion was back in 2013?
new
The Pied Piper was a sub-archetype we discussed.

Just out of general curiosity. Where does Bard fall on the traditional D&D alignment scale? Gathering what I can from the tidbits we've seen I'd guess somewhere in the neutral range? Also, what were some of the major influences when creating Bard, in his design, concept, story, and unique voiceover? He definitely seems to have more of an Eastern spirit influence, but I'd love to know more!
new
Runeterrans see Bard as neutral because their perspective is limited.
new
How old is Bard?
Skeeziks (NA)
new
Bard is definitely ancient beyond human knowing.
new
First off the design for Bard is gorgeous. I would love to hear more about it and how you came up with the bells on his body, or the fact he's not a solid body exactly. Im also curious were the idea for his passive charms came from, its so different making the champ run around the map to get stronger. Love this champ Supports for life! haha
new
We're really happy you love it.

Is there going to be an interaction between the Astral and the Void? They seem so perfectly diametrically opposed in motivation and similar in mystery and otherworldliness it seems only natural that Icathia and this Bard have some sort of history for several reasons. I mean the mission statement of bard is to be a passive caretaker of the manifest realms whereas the Void seems to have this need to deconstruct, consume, or otherwise undermine the mortal plane. It seems almost impossible at that, they might have crossed paths in the past, or clashed even. This is all emphasized with the Arc Light Vel'koz skin, possibly indicating that there might have been a shared origin or history, or perhaps a future direction. tl;dr Will Bard's backstory have any contact with the Void? Because I am currently writing a MASSIVE fanfic. You guys ROCK.
new
None of that sounds crazy to us.
new
What kind of 'creature' is Bard? He's not exactly human.
Skeeziks (NA)
new
Hey, Seexyd! Thanks for the question! He is definitely not human, but he is not a creature either. He is a magical entity that has created a corporeal form in order to interact with the physical world.
new
How much was he inspired by Shinto religion and/or Miyazaki films? I can see a lot of that in him.
Skeeziks (NA)
new
Hey, Zefra! Thanks for posting! I'm not overly familiar with Shinto, but Miyazaki is a major creative influence for me and is undoubtedly an inspiration for Bard's visual design.

1) What was the decision to make him silence/ only speak through sound effects? 2) Does anyone in the League know of Bard? 3) Which part of his kit do you like the most?

Hey there! The decision to make Bard speak through musical energy was determined very early on - long before Bard landed on my plate (I'm the sound designer). They didn't know what exactly it would be until we started giving him sounds.
