What's the inspiration for his goofiness? When I think of a tree-man protecting the squirrels, I would think of something slow and deliberate (think Treebeard the Ent), serious, calm, and not like he jumped out of Lulu's imagination XD (super excited to try him, though, don't get me wrong)

When I think of a tree-man protecting the squirrels, I would think of something slow and deliberate (think Treebeard the Ent), serious, calm, and not like he jumped out of Lulu's imagination XD (super excited to try him, though, don't get me wrong) From the narrative side, a bit of it was wanting to avoid the typical druid/treant/ent slowness. We wanted our weirdo tree man to have energy and his own sense of oddness. We figured, after a few dozen lifetimes getting to know nature, he'd sort of see sides of their personalities that we don't see. Besides, Ivern is full of life and life energy. While nature is patient, life never ever stops or slows down. Then we saw his walk animations and knew we made the right call. Also, slow line delivery while attacking or spell casting would get sort of excruciating after a while.

Yeah, the inspiration came from all sides and disciplines. After seeing the first animations for his basic attacks, we knew his voice delivery had to match the light-hearted fun slappiness. He even says "oops!" sometimes! Also, we have a good idea of who we think the character is going to be before we record the voice actor, but our super talented voice actors always interpret characters in ways we never thought, and Ivern was no different! Recording Ivern's voice was definitely a highlight especially listening to Candy King Ivern voice deliveries. :)

Is Maokai considered a foil of Ivern? The lore behind Ivern appears to comparable to Maokai's in structure, but reversed in the outcome. Was this done knowingly or is it just coincidence?

The lore behind Ivern appears to comparable to Maokai's in structure, but reversed in the outcome. Was this done knowingly or is it just coincidence? We definitely consulted with the Foundations team and came to the conclusion that Maokai and Ivern are on opposite trajectories. It felt natural to move Ivern away from the Maokai personality zone. Aw man. I punned in that sentence.
Where did you guys get the inspiration for Candy King Ivern? Did one of the developers have a Lollypoppy nightmare while thinking of skins for the new champ?

I honestly have no idea which of our demented (and wonderfully talented) skins team member was inspired to create Candy King Ivern. All I know is when I saw the concept, I fist bumped the air like some cheesy 80s movie ending, then pointed at the screen and yelled "this skin is getting a bunch of VO lines".

Invades look really tough to defend against with him--specifically taking his camps while he's setting up others. Was there any thought to give monsters in his groves defensive buffs while in a completed (or even growing) shrine? Alternatively, how does he defend against those invades?
Squad5 (NA)
new
Invading against Ivern has always been one of the intended weaknesses that can be exploited against him if he starts trying to overextend. Of course we had thoughts of letting Ivern buff the monsters or try to protect them when he is around to make it harder for enemies (At one point he could shield the monsters as well as allied champions and Daisy), but generally with Ivern's flexibility we wanted to make sure enemies felt like they had options too. As far as defending goes, Ivern is pretty slippery and can delay enemies and kite them long enough for his allies to come in and grab a rootcaller dash for a kill. Or if none of your champion friends are willing to come help, Ivern can summon Daisy to bash on them for him.

How do you guys feel about the fact that every red after the first will go to his ADC if he is blue side? This is going to heavily warp how bot lane plays out imo
Squad5 (NA)
new
We want you to feel like this is an advantage to have when picking Ivern. It's a cool thing to think about when you see him on your team, and is completely unique to him. Of course, going forward he will be balanced around the fact that he can do this, so if it looks like things are out of line we'll pull him back in.
new
_**Do you guys consider Ivern to be a 'stealth' champion?**_ I know his brush interior is revealed for the first 3 seconds, but it's the closest ability we've gotten to an invis ability since Kha'Zix back in 2012, and it turns an ally invisible to boot! As someone who wants to see more invisibility in the game, I really appreciate Ivern's design, since his brush demonstrates that there is tons of design space left for invis and it implies all sorts of neat stuff about the vision game. {{champion:35}}
Squad5 (NA)
new
At least personally, I do in a lot of ways. Remember his brush is only revealed to his allies, not to his enemies. Vision is a complex space, so I'm sure we'll find more cool ways of using it going forward. I will say though that oftentimes vision based gameplay can become some of the most frustrating to play against, so we need to be careful how we approach it.
Ah nice! Caught one of these in time :) Always wanted to ask questions about champions before! Got a few from me: 1: How difficult was it to make sure Ivern stood out visually as a unique champion considering we already have a tree champ? 2: What was your favorite part about designing Ivern? 3: Any concepts that didn't make it into the final production that you wish did? 4: Regarding his lore, did Ivern exist before the Noxian/Ionian conflict, or was he after? I wanted to check because it would be interesting to think of how he might have acted towards that war if he was there during it :o

Incredibly important. Skeeziks did a lot of work to make sure Ivern's silhouette stood out as unique from the other champions. > > 2: What was your favorite part about designing Ivern? For me, it was writing the jungle camp interaction lines and the Candy King skin lines. I had the most fun of any champion I've ever worked on doing those. I think it's due to the specific nature of the relationships (bramble back, raptors, candy itself) that leads to deeper, more resonant writing. > > 3: Any concepts that didn't make it into the final production that you wish did? > Not really, for me. I'm incredibly happy with how he turned out. > 4: Regarding his lore, did Ivern exist before the Noxian/Ionian conflict, or was he after? I wanted to check because it would be interesting to think of how he might have acted towards that war if he was there during it :o Before the Noxian/Ionian conflict for sure. Long before. I think it would be interesting as well. I think when Ivern encounters violence or cruelty that reminds him of his past, his first instinct is to run, and he probably did for a long time. Now, I think he's going to face that last aspect of cultivating the world: humanity. We're a stubborn lot. Luckily, so is Ivern.

Hey, dude! Yes, absolutely. I love the two characters you've mentioned there and they were definitely part of the character archetype from the very beginning. Outside of those two there were also more classical characters like Puck and Oberon, we talked about Johnny Appleseed, the guys from Labyrinth that live in the woods and can take their heads off and throw them around, even Wilt from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, lots of stuff was inspirational at one point or another but I think you may have called out two of the closest all around analogues!

First of all, I love Ivern and have been waiting for a druid character for a long time, if you couldn't guess from my name. I'm glad that he is completely goofy and generally a good guy, but what lead you to make him that way? Why not aggressively protective of nature or something else along those lines? Also what is the Kumungu affair and how does it affect the other Kumungu champs, if at all?

Also what is the Kumungu affair and how does it affect the other Kumungu champs, if at all? We felt that the aggressively protective space would put Ivern too close to Maokai, who is more about revenge for his spoiled home forest. Plus, it had been a really long time since we had released an honest-to-goodness nice character (Braum, I think). the Kumungu Affair is a secret between Ivern and Red Brambleback. He still hasn't told me with what happened.

Hey there, just wanted to ask some (many) Questions about Ivern, but also some other stuff. 1. What does Ivern think about Yordels, specially Mini-Gnar? 2. What's Iverns Favorite Food and drink? 3. Have you thought about giving other Champions abilities Ivern has in the past, like his passive or the Q? (E is pretty "common" and from my knowledge you already thought about giving champions the ability to place bushes some time ago) 4. If Ivern has 3 Wishes he can make true, what would they be? 5. What was the funniest bug you encountered in Ivern design evolution? Now three not Ivern related Questions: 1. Did you thought about giving a champ an Ability like the ultimate from Abbadon (dota 2) where people heal when they get attacked or stuff which require more knowledge to counter? like strong DoTs, but only if you move or abilities that are Point and click but only can hit moving targets etc.) 2. Which was the craziest Ultimate you ever thought about bringing into the game? 3. I dunno if you can answer this, but what was the craziest skin Idea you had planned? And a Lore Question: which was the coolest/craziest scrapped lore Idea? Thank you for your answers! (sry for long post, but I need to compensate for my silver V noob skills)

For 3. Yea, brush is the big one. Often in the past we felt like we were just adding brush to a kit to add it, and not really making sure the champion's kit and theme really made good use of it. In particular for Ivern when we were testing the brush initially the point was brought up that Ivern had better care a lot about brush in his kit to justify the amount of complexity it's going to add to the game. I think we were able to do that successfully. For the not Ivern 1. Those types of abilities are definitely doable, the key there is clarity so people can understand what is happening and when. Oftentimes those abilities have to be baited to work once people know what they do though. For the other number 2. This wasn't my idea - credit goes to 20thCenturyFaux - but he was actually messing around with an ultimate that slowed down time for everyone in the game for a duration. Absolutely wacky, my personal pick for craziest ultimate (that I suppose could maybe actually work).
Regarding the funniest bug... one that sticks out in recent memory was this bizarre interaction with an ally Taliyah. If she didn't dash into a rooted enemy, she could cast her ult without any cooldown.

Why the name "Ivern" ? Some people could confuse it with {{champion:92}} and it's really hard to pronounce for me as I'm not a native English speaker. Health peaks at lvl 10, mana at lvl 8. Was there any consideration of just having a %max on each scaling for the passive costs? P.S. I went ahead and made a graph of these resource costs for people who don't like to read numbers. http://i.imgur.com/MM4Ch9F.png
Squad5 (NA)
new
Lots of tuning to try to make the costs feel right throughout the game. In particular the comparisons between Ivern and other standard junglers were a big deal. We needed to ask questions about what the differences should be, and how the tuning of the costs made you feel about using his passive later in the game. In the end, we erred on trying to make the passive stay meaningful longer, which gives you the situation where Ivern is fantastic early and actually starts becoming slower and costing more than normal, then stays slower and costs almost nothing.

What made you decide to make him a human to start off instead of just being a tree-god-thing?
Skeeziks (NA)

In all honesty it had a lot to do with depth and relatability. We wanted him to have a touchstone to humanity since a lot of the characters that have come out recently - Bard, Kindred, Aurelion Sol - had been on a kind of god-tier or archetypal level and we wanted a character that could be related to or a bridge of sorts between both the mystical and mortal/human world. We actually had a lot of discussions about would he know Bard? would he know Kindred? What would he think of them? What does he think of humans? And the answers were more interesting if he had an evolved perspective from a flawed and very human past. Hope that answers your question! Thanks, Solash!

I think Ivern knows a lot about beings like Bard and Aurelion Sol. That God-Willow was like a world-tree. It really tied the planet together. In relation to the Void, Ivern understands that darkness makes the light shine brighter. These things, however an abomination they may be, are still a part of the world he inhabits. Probably, he just wonders why they aren't friendlier. If they don't devour our reality in the next era or so, he might be able to get them to come around.

Ha! We actually used Jhin's rig for a while in our proxy phase (when we were first starting to test Ivern in-game). So in a way... no, they were not. But to answer the second question, I wouldn't say cartoony was our goal but something that was human-like yet still "other" was. We wanted him to have a relatability built in to his silhouette but we still wanted the expectation that he was going to do some weird stuff.

AP mostly. I think he can be fairly difficult to play as well.

HI James! Inspirations coming from everywhere (narrative, animations or art from any other artist, etc) For Ivern we took references from the nature like braided trees and also we found huge inspiration from the Celtic culture like their patterns. The best tip I can give it to you is keep that passion for art and keep working every day to improve your skills, with patience and time you will become an awesome illustrator ;)

In his insights it sounds like he wants to become the tree he cut down. Like it's a right he has to earn. ("He has this strange, looming sense in his mind that, if he does his job well, one day he'll earn the right to become the tree he cut down.") Does Ivern not like being a tree man?

("He has this strange, looming sense in his mind that, if he does his job well, one day he'll earn the right to become the tree he cut down.") Does Ivern not like being a tree man? He loves being a tree-man, but he knows he's got some God-Willow sized roots to fill. Ultimately, he wants to become the tree and restore what he took long ago. It would be bliss for him.

Why does his passive make him lose health for taking scuttle? Many were discussing it on the pbe boards but it was never addressed.
Squad5 (NA)
new
This was brought up several times in development as well, and is an interesting situation. Ivern pays the same cost when taking any non-epic jungle camp regardless of the camp's strength. Ivern has to take the good and the bad of that fact. So, on brambleback Ivern takes a disproportionately low amount of damage compared to fighting it, and on scuttle he takes damage rather than healing like other junglers do. I could see at some point in the future if balance was a problem that we might make Ivern's costs relative to the camps he is taking. But for now, I believe it makes an already complex decision of what camps and which order etc. more simple to know the costs are the same.
Ivern gives of himself and the creatures give back.
What was the main inspiration behind Ivern's overal look and music? From an outside look in perspective, this fella seems like Tom Bombadil from Tolkien's stories mixed with the ents o3o Also, Sassafras! \o\
Skekses (NA)

I think all of us we love Tolkien's stories and I'm sure was something our brain keep in the background in some how :) But If I have to say what was the main inspiration for Ivern, I'll say Celtic Tree patterns.

Why was it decided to give this jovial, slightly insane forest entity such a grim, dark past? I feel like a lot of champions and reworks these days are getting really dark and grisly back stories, so it was a bit disappointing that your first jovial/whimsical champ since Gnar has such a story that kind of detracts from the mystique and faerie nature of Ivern.

For me, what I longed to see was a character at the tail end of his arc. We don't have many "complete" characters in our world. To do that, it felt right to give him a cruel and iron-resolved past, one where he didn't see the journey, but only had eyes for the destination. For him to come around and embrace his past and his mistakes, I thought would be very powerful, and give him a final task to come face to face with: how humans can be. Hope this clears it up a bit.

Just saying i ahve been waiting a lot a jungle- support champion, as a jungle - support main :) and then i fell in love with the character. let me say, it is just what i do need now. Thing is - do you expect him to fare well in support lane or you just mean that he is a jungler with a support-ey style?
Squad5 (NA)

He can lane as well. I think his success really varies on who you partner him with though. Caitlyn can obviously make good use out of his brush and doesn't need as much defense from her support so she's a great choice, but on the other hand Ivern and Graves can make a really nasty combo for catching someone out and bursting them down while being hard to kill. Most of Ivern's lane comes down to how well he can use the brush.

1) With every new champion some boundaries are pushed. To me it's very intriguing the fact that Ivern can create Bushes It's a very cool idea and one that i think you developers at Riot wanted to put in a champ long time ago, am i correct? If Yes, was Ivern specifically designed from the beginning with this kind of ability in mind? 2) No matter how different he is from Maokai (he is, don't get me wrong) i always feel like he "outshines" Maokai, just based on his character and the voice acting alone. Of course Maokai is a much older champion, so will we see in the future an "upgrade" to Maokai to bring him on the same level of awsomeness as Ivern?

Some questions: 1. In your testing, how crippling is it for Ivern when an enemy takes every smart opportunity to invade? Is he easier to get ahead of by invading than other champs that can't duel early? 2. What happens if Ivern dies while groves are growing on camps? Do they continue undeterred? 3. 1. It can be pretty rough for Ivern. Luckily as a support type character he can still provide utility even when he falls behind. I think he can be a bit deceptive though, he has a lot of control that can allow his allies to come help him really easily if you aren't careful invading. 2. The groves keep growing. 3. Most likely it depends we feel like there's a lot of room for more and the game can support it in a healthy way. It may be a bit difficult to have a jungle clear style similar to Ivern's, but I'm sure we could figure out other cool ways of going through the jungle.

Hey Blue Collar Bear! I first had to creatively brainstorm where Ivern would fit sonically in League. Because Ivern's such a friendly creature, we wanted to stay away from overly violent sounds and push toward natural, mystical, and "agilistic fun." Some other games that served as inspirations were Ori and the Blind Forest, Flower, and Journey. We definitely wanted to stay away from what makes Maokai and Zyra unique, while carving out a different and special audio palette for Ivern. Next we recorded A LOT of wood/leaves Foley. I constructed a tool that would stretch various rope across wooden logs to get some really gnarly wood creaks and groans. Recorded a lot of tree bark ripping and tearing. Also, the leaves you hear in-game are not actually leaves at all! We cut up old cassette tape and strips of paper onto a stick and swung it around like a ribbon twirler. We also did a lot of twisting of those in our hands to get more texture audio source. Most of wood elements you hear in his voice and sound all came from these recordings. For the celtic mystical magic part of Ivern, I used a lot of recordings of bells, chimes, whistles, and other source that was used for various "Runeterra magic." Using all this with several audio plugins like WHOOSH, Dopplers, Soundtoys, and various Waves instruments added to the more naturalistic wood Foley to give Ivern his unique sound. I'm planning on sharing some videos and photos from our Foley recording session on the boards in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned!
Thanks. I'm not an audio engineer or anything, but I'm getting ready to design some games. I was just curious to see how you guys did it.

1. How does ivern communicate with the jungle creeps? i mean we hear him talk to them but how does he understand what they tell him? and don't just tell me "he learned their languages"..... 2. what exactly happened in the affair his quotes to red buff are about? 3. ivern does say that dragons don't like him but if he's so friendly towards all animals, how does it not break his heart to attack dragons / herald / baron? 4. are the letters of "Ivern" intentionally those of "Riven" mixed up? Somewhere we did do some visual explorations and mood boards, but these were done when we had an ultimate that had Ivern becoming the God-Willow (we nixed bc it wasn't all that fun). After that, we didn't develop the imagery more and it sits unfinished. > > * Are there any storyboard sketches related to Iverns lore? One of our artists did a mini story board using in-game assets to illustrate how Daisy and Ivern became friends. Unsure about the Soraka connection, but I'm pretty sure she is a celestial being still. As for the guardians, they were beings who were charged by living close to the god-willow. I can't say much more about them at the moment, I'm afraid. Good questions! Thanks for taking the time to ask :)

Notice me Senpai *Posting to Bump the Questions* 2 Questions 1. Is this going to increase the mobility creep and have potential to be abused? (Speaking of giving dashes to teammates) Whether it be Maokai, or Rengar, as well as others, it does seem like Ivern's kit could potentially change a LOT of the game and its comps. 2. Is he going to be able to be built full damage and be capable? I see him more as a utility jungler (able to go damage or tanky) from PBE gameplay, or will he be forced into "support jungler" role? P.S. I love him, and I WILL be bringing him into the botlane as support AND in the jungle. He is what I need #SupportMain
Squad5 (NA)
new
1. I think mobility creep is generally more dangerous when used in a freely targeted dash. In this case Ivern has to hit a skilshot to gain access to the dash for his allies. In some ways I actually think that Ivern evens out the odds for the characters who don't have mobility. Dashes are useful for everyone, but in particular characters like Darius become a lot more dangerous. 2. We're going to balance and tune Ivern around being a support (class not position). If a damage build becomes prominent and seems to take Ivern away from what we intended him to do it'd likely be adjusted to help bring out his support style again. That said, if a fun cheese build works sometimes and doesn't become the only way to play the character, that's fine.

How would Ivern feel about/get along with {{champion:44}} ? Ivern seems to find beauty in all of nature, and Taric finds beauty in just about everything as well. Also would Ivern go out of his way to stop people like {{champion:202}} and {{champion:107}} who kill for passion/sport? Or would he just frown upon them.

Or would he just frown upon them. It depends on the level of what they're doing. Certainly he frowns upon them already, and he would try to stop them from their goal. But deeper, Ivern understands that death is a part of life -- even hunting. Killing for sport, he'd do his best to stop. That said, he's not omnipotent or omnipresent. He wants to teach and show, hoping that the more people he can cultivate, the further his message will disseminate.

I believe Ivern would try and befriend all those you mentioned, to varying degrees of success. He's sort of like Squirrel Girl, in that he doesn't really need to resort to violence to stop baddies. He'd try a lot of other tactics first, like making them laugh or asking them what in the forest fascinates them.

Question directed for Scherzo. As a music person myself I was curious as what inspired you for the creation of Ivern's music. To me I heard the piece and was more thinking of almost a village setting rather than a forest. (Though I did enjoy the bellowing drums driving the piece) Thanks!
Scherzo (NA)
new
When I first started thinking about Ivern's music, my initial reaction was that his music should feel peaceful, lighthearted and ambient. This seemed in-line with his being a caretaker of the forest. However, after some playtests I felt like that was missing the point; that my approach focused too much on Ivern in the context of his forest setting while sidestepping his personality. Trying to express "goofiness" through instrumental music is incredibly tricky and prone to missing the mark (especially for a global player base), so instead I tried to narrow my focus to capturing a sense of lighthearted whimsical quirkiness. Some of this I did through the instrumentation and orchestration, where I leaned pretty heavily on woodwinds over a bouncy plucked accompaniment. Melodically, I used slightly off-kilter phrasing that at times is meant to feel a little like an improvised line that Ivern might be contentedly humming to himself. For the instrumentation, I started by going for the low-hanging fruit and finding as many wooden-sounding instruments as I could. This have me an assortment of log drums, mallets, wooden flutes and reeds. This palette didn't give me quite the timbral variety I wanted, so I added the Irish Bouzouki as the primary plucked accompaniment instrument that you hear. At pretty much all stages of the project I avoided using a traditional orchestra. Some of these instruments I used as-is, but in many cases I used an instrument's sounds as a "building blocks" to create a different sound, through stretching, pitch-shifting, and other processing. For example, a lot of the ambient pads that I used in the piece were actually created from an Anklung that I recorded and then stretched out and applied a ton of reverb to. This gave me more or less the same effect as a synth-based pad, but because it came from a rattly wooden instrument (that I can't really play :p ), it had a certain organic and harmonic unevenness that I thought was appropriate.

From a certain angle, yes. Goodness is always an underrated super power. But in all honestly, they are all in the mythic/celestial/spirit realm space, which probably places them on par. Magnitude wise, Aurelion Sol makes stars. Hard to top that. But one day he will die and will see some integration of Kindred. Ivern's is becoming the new God-Willow, a font, a conduit for life-giving magic. It's very different from the other two. Not lesser, not quite equal, but on the same spectrum of respect.

Oh jeez. There are so many options here. Probably it'd be Viktor. That guy needs to spend some time in nature. I think Ivern wouldn't necessarily have a pick, he'd try to befriend just about anyone. I think he'd be drawn to Maokai, but would be severely disappointed in his path.

The Bio and backstory of Ivern was one of the best I have read. I especially love the part where the voice within him says the words Watch, Listen, Grow and Show. Thanks! That really means a lot. I think we always knew that Ivern was profound and possessed deep wisdom, and that it would be buried underneath his oddball demeanor, so that those who truly listened to him would share in his experience. In terms of the bio, I knew I wanted the God-Willow's essence to speak in very, very simple directives, because the deepest messages are often the simplest ones. A lot of this reflects sort of my view on people and what need to do with each other in an idealistic way. The God-Willow speaks to Ivern in clear terms when he feels the most lost, and then lets the tree-man find the meaning behind those words. It all stems from Ivern's arc and his motivation as a human. When he was a cruel Freljordian, it was simple -- TAKE TAKE TAKE. He would do whatever it took to wrest power from others, from the world. SO much so that he completely whiffed at seeing, hearing and appreciating the journey he was on. His greatest task is to impart that to his species and that will finally finish his task.

While scripting Ivern's quotes, did you ever consider interactions with Shyvana and Udyr? As fellow junglers, they're his antithesis both design-wise (rage-filled and destructive with kits built purely to kill enemies while protecting only themselves from harm) and play-style wise (they recklessly and rapidly blaze through the jungle, killing everything that moves, and they don't team fight that well).

I did, yes. But ultimately (partially from listening to feedback from players here, actually) it felt like using our time to write tons of taunts or champ-specific interactions wasn't a great investment simply because of the taunt range when triggering. With Ivern, we had a couple jump to our minds, but decided to cut most of them out simply to focus on what matters most to Ivern: his jungle camps. Those interactions were more meaningful to him as a character and to a player playing the Green Father. Also, we figured Ivern as the kind of character who would never, ever have an unkind thing to say to another champ, even if he's been insulted. After the snark of Aurelion Sol, it was nice to change it up.

It was definitely more challenging to design sound for Ivern since he had to sound passively mystical and not feel aggressively violent but still feel satisfying in a game which involves violent characters killing each other with huge abilities and bombastic sounds. (Though I did get to explore more of the violent side with Daisy's attacks.) Also, since Ivern isn't tied to any one region in Runeterra, I had more freedom to explore what his "forest magic" could sound like but still fit within the League universe. All these challenges were extremely fun to dive into and I hope you enjoy the work that came from it!
