If you are talking about the in game emote, there is one at Level 4 and at Level 5 for the emotes.
Will there be demotions and decay due to performance or lack of using a champion for an extended period of time or will this system be on par with Honor?

Yes, you cannot lose a level of Champion Mastery after it is earned.

We know some players just want to go hard and be measured in a hyper competitive environment. This system won't preclude us from doing some kind of champion specific leaderboards in the future. That said, this system is intentionally more accessible than ranked. When we ran pro players through the grading system, none of them were able to consistently earn S+ grades each game. Getting the point where you can consistently earn high grades would be worth bragging about.

If you had 2 players one of which face rolled 1000 games and one of whom played 1000 games at a pro level, the pro level player would have a significantly higher overall point score than the other player (since points continue to accrue after max level) but both would be max level and have the emotes. The other thing to keep in mind is that you get a performance score each game. Getting to the point where you can consistently earn an S grade requires a very high level of play.

I was under the impression that the points are cumulative over games? Just to clarify, if reaching S grade needs 100 points, a pro level game play grants 50, and a lower level game play grants 2. In the end if I play at low level for 50 games, I would achieve the same standing as a pro in 2 games?

These grades don't persist - it basically tells you how good you did in a game. So imagine you play a game and you pull a Bjergson crushing the enemy team and performing in the highest x% of players in your region. You would earn an S+ for that game. That S+ would translate into some point score that when added to your teams performance and a few other factors determines the total points for the game. Those points go towards your level, which unlocks the rewards.

I have 2 questions, 1 my understanding is that the mastery is JUST for yourself no one else can see it. Do you have any plans on making it so others can see it? and if so what kind of impact do you think it will have on the community and in game play? Question 2 just a basic one Will the icon floating above your head be a separate input in its own? like /joke or /taunt will this one be like /imbetterthenyou? lol

Will this effect ranked at all? I know in Smite you can only play Gods you've mastered in ranked, will this be the case in League as well? Or will this be completely cosmetic for showing your appreciation for a champion?

We don't have concrete plans on rewards but we definitely want people to feel value from mastering a wide champion pool.

So, if you go Jax bot in a kill lane, you're going to be compared to others doing that.

How are grades determined? Say my MMR is 1400. Does that mean that if I perform at a 1400 MMR level with a champion I get a, say, C+ and if I perform at a 1500 I get an S? Or is it like Mastery where you can only go up? In other words, are grades relative to your own MMR or are they absolute (so Challenger players would just have S in everything) or is it something else entirely? It was also mentioned that these things take individual performance into account. While it's easy to take KDA into account, what about presence in teamfights and other assorted things that a human could look at and know was good/bad but would seem difficult to a computer to determine? Will the system be retroactive so that those of us with X-thousand games will instantly have max mastery on certain champions?

We're grading you against all other players in that champion and position combo. We're not looking at your MMR. Grades are absolute. We didn't think we'd be able to do this at first - we assumed (like you) that top tier players would only get the highest grades, but in our testing that hasn't shown to be the case. Bronze players having amazing games can still get the top grades, it's just less common.

Players have come up with a variety of additional rewards that we are gathering and will consider.
I am an avid player of ARAM because of my busy schedule sometimes cannot allow me a full 40min game, IS there any chance of bringing Champion Mastery to add the ARAM playlist? Even cutting down exp by 1/2 if possible? The only time I ever do SR is if to try a new game mode or nearing the end of the Ranked Season. I know i'm not alone in assuming that there are players out there who play ARAM more.

Right now in these early stages of release, we are not planning on putting it on ARAM or other game modes, mostly because we want to make sure everything is running smoothly with the baseline of the feature. However, in the future we could take this into consideration, nothing is completely off the table. :)

Why only in normals? the champion mastery encourages players to do 2 things that are REALLY good to climb ranked solo queue 1- Main a champion at least until you get him mastered, that will make the matches easier because you will get a better knowledge about the champion that you are playing, and most of us know that maining a champion actually is a really good way to climb solo queue 2- You will swap champs once in a while to keep mastering more, which will also be good for making players get more experience with more champs and roles which will slowly give them better understanding of the general game. I think it is pretty wrong to put them just in normal games...

Will the system take into account the amount of games you've already played as a certain champion? I know that a lot of people tend to main certain roles/champions and already have hundreds (if not thousands) of games as, say, Sivir or Orianna. Will that affect one's champion mastery upon initial release?

My main concern is the support role. A lot of mage champs have been heading bot lane to support for the last two seasons now. For example: I play Vel'Koz a lot as support. He has engage and disengage, great damage potential, and I have actually done really well so far. If you compare me to a main mid Vel'Koz, I probably look like garbage. As support, I don't CS unless necessary, and I don't take kills. I knowingly back off to receive the assists and not the kills. The purpose of most mids is to carry. With relatively no CS and low kills, granted KDA is based off both kills and assists, I still can not compare to the main mid Vel'koz. Is there anyway to address this and will it be coded to assess both primary and secondary roles. In the same instance, how are you going to judge a bruiser? The best bruisers in the game are judge by not KDA or CS or anything like that. A good bruiser knows how to soak up front line damage and take the enemy carries out of the fight. This can only be seen by watching the game. No recorded stat can judge that. Any insight would be great and thank you for your time.

The main thing here is that your grades are comparing you to other people playing the same champion in that position. So when you play Vel'koz support, you're being graded against other Vel'koz supports. Likewise bruisers. So the grades should make sense for the way you're choosing to play.

Something doesn't settle right about the lack of demotions/point loss. Take me for example, on average I get about a 30- 40% win rate with Soraka in Team builder. I might get the occasional win streak like everyone else but it's mostly just losses. My concern is I know I'm not a good player. I'm also not improving with every game as stated in here. The fact that there apparently won't be an option to turn off loading borders worries me. Why? Because it means that after a certain point, after so many cripplingly horrible losses, I'm going to be considered a max tier Soraka. That means bad times for everyone involved. My team is going to be expecting a level of play I can't ever hope to achieve. I just want to hide my border and draw as little attention to myself as possible. But this system is just going to give people more of a reason to rage at me than already happens. Please please please consider the option of hiding any and all aspects of this program that can be seen by others. I get enough abuse ingame as it is, don't add even more to that pile.

The enemy team won't see your badge, but I understand the concern about setting expectations for your team. We don't currently plan to disable this, but we can look at doing so if it turns out to needed.

I was wondering on how the emote badge will work;Is there any plans for specific animations of the champs showing off the badge in the near future?Plus if a champ uses the emote,does the enemy team see the badge?anyways,can't wait for this to hit live! :V Ctrl+6 shows the emote when you reach Level 4 or Level 5 on the champion you are playing. The emote is not custom per champion and the champions do not have a custom animation to go with it. Currently the emote is only visible to your teammates but we are considering opening it up to enemies.

I'm extremely excited for this feature! An issue I'm seeing is a conflict between the loading screen border for champion mastery and the loading screen border for end-of-season ranking. How will this be handled? i.e. I ended the season in gold IV, and was rewarded the gold loading screen border. I have also mastered Riven, so I have also been rewarded the champion mastery border. Hey! I'm the visual designer on this feature. The way champion mastery shows up on the loading screen is actually a badge/flag that shows up over the top left of your ranked border. We've also moved honor to the center of the top bar to make way for this. So... if you play ranked, have an honor badge, and are playing a champion with mastery level 4 or higher, you will look super epic!

I just want to clarify on this cause I keep seeing people talk about doing bad in games and eventually getting s-rank on blah blah champion. s-rank is a grade, and you get a grade after every game. like your graded on how you played that game. the tiers are what your working your way up to. also if you make it to tier 5 on a champion and are not good at it by then, you have problems. I keep seeing "so I could lose every game and still get to tier 5? another bad choice for riot." but the thing is that chances are your not going to lose every game, and unless you just surrender every game cause its not going your way, you will get better at that champion. its pretty much un avoidable. so people please stop crying over the fact that there is no penalty for losing games, or that your going to get a tier 5 trash Urgot in your games. I doubt riot would make a system where you can get something without earning it. they are not stupid, they have been doing this for a few years now and we have a great game thanks to them. also no matter what you say, this system will be released and in a month or so nobody will complain about it anymore, just like when riot released smart pings and trinkets.

I think that people will level up their favorite champs, and some will then want to seek out new favorites to level up. That's a pretty typical pattern already. Just to clarify - there are levels that you progress through (initially 1-5), and the grades (D-S) are per-game feedback.

Hey Riot people! So I understand that the load screen badge will not be visible to the enemy team, but will the custom emote be visible to enemy players in game if I choose to show it off? Part of the appeal of the system to me is being able to show off my badge on my main champions, and since it's optional I hope that would be allowed. I am going to make the assumption that Riot has an amazing database which does have information relating to how many times an account has played a certain champion since the dawn of time. As someone who has play upwards of 5000 games, I know that I have increased in skills on some champions but as I understand it, the current plan is not to retroactively apply this in an effort to motivate players to progress. This is not something I am a fan of since I have already made progress on many of the champs in the game. The fact that your new feature decided to happen today doesn't make me any worse at them. What is the plan in regards to dealing with players who have played tons of games on certain champs before this feature rolls out. As it is, it makes my previous games feel less important and feels like a slap in the face for all the games I've worked on certain champions. Perhaps a diminished value based on the previous games? So if I have played 100 Yasuo games, it would hypothetically count as playing 10 games after the system was launch. Also, assuming this data exists, the idea of at least rewarding me for my single highest-valued retroactive champion would be a nice touch to the system, at least then my games before this system feel valuable and it would be exciting to know which champion was your best.

Its going to average 15 to 30 games to make Level 5 Champion Mastery. With your amount of games behind your Champions, you should average on the lower side of that.
