Here's a post where you can ask questions about the stuff I've worked on, and I'll try to answer.

_1/10 Closing Edit_ Since it's been a few days and I feel like a lot of the questions I can be useful in answering have been asked, I'm going to stop checking in on the thread here. To those that I didn't manage to answer questions for, I do apologize. If there's something I missed that you really think I'm the right person to answer, feel free to make a Boards post @me, pm on Reddit, or even Twitter if it's a short question. Thanks to everyone that came and asked stuff. The amount of traction the thread got was really surprising to me, and it made it really easy to burn through a lot of questions pretty efficiently, so I might try to do others like it a bit more often. Since most of the stuff I'm working on at the moment is WIP and under wraps, I likely won't be a big voice on Boards for awhile, but again, do feel free to reach out. Cheers, Repertoir __________ Hi everyone, Today I have been reading a thread by HIMM Sandwich that basically comes down to how it feels like Riot sometimes ignores player sentiment/feedback, and then goes silent when asked for answers. I won't be the best source of insight on projects that I didn't work on, but feel free to use this post as a place where you can ask specifically about any of the projects I've worked on in the last year or two, and I'll do my best to give you honest, direct answers about why things were made the way they were, and how I/we feel about these projects currently. Keep in mind that if they're outside of issues I worked on, it's likely I won't be able to give meaningful answers, and also that I won't guarantee you'll like what I have to share on some topics. Here's some of the stuff I'm likely to have insight into: * Past Projects: * Nidalee Champion Update * Ryze Champion Update * Ashe Champion Update * Juggernauts Champion Updates - Garen/Skarner * Marksmen Champion Updates - Quinn/Kog'Maw * Current Projects: * Taric Champion Update * Mages Champion Updates - ???/??? Feel free to ask about other stuff as well, but I will say I'm unlikely to be able to help on lots of other things. I should have time to give some answers the next few evenings. Cheers, Repertoir

It seems a lot of champions you have worked on rely on "windows of power" and that shapes their gameplay pattern. I feel that this is a healthy pattern for design, because it gives dynamic play that competing players can play around without having to overcomplicate the kits and I would like to see that kept moving forward (as long as it doesn't get to feeling like too much of a "arcade minigame" feel). Do you feel like that is a good way to continue moving forward on champion reworks and design, rather than champions that have a steady state of power from moment to moment (disregarding cd's and aa's which all champions share)? PS thanks for the shoutout, I'm glad to know a Rioter listened and cared :) Edit: Can this post be pinned? This is a pin-worthy post!! Edit 2: Thank you :) http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/gaqH4Jyv-thank-you-riot-repertoir

> Do you feel like that is a good way to continue moving forward on champion reworks and design, rather than champions that have a steady state of power from moment to moment (disregarding cd's and aa's which all champions share)? It's definitely an option, but it's not the only way. We should probably be continuing to look for unexplored or less explored counterplay. Otherwise we end up with stuff like "Thanks Riot, another line skillshot." I can see the same being true of any overused design, and I'd say I've probably leaned a bit too hard on "windows of power."

This might sound a bit mean, but why is Riot always so unwilling to revert changes completely? It seems that no matter the backlash changes will almost never be completely reverted even if the situation before the update was healthier (at least in the eyes of the community). Also, what was the original objective in removing stealth wards, like the single most important goal Riot hoped that the change would achieve? Thanks for doing this thread too, I'm glad something came of HIMM Sandwich's post as I was checking it over and over waiting for some red responses.
new
> why is Riot always so unwilling to revert changes completely? As a ground floor game designer that doesn't really make the big decisions like these, I really can't do much more than make guesses on this subject, and I don't really think that's fair to you guys. Sorry if that sounds like dodging. I'd enlighten you with what I had if I had it. From the perspective of someone works on champions and gameplay, I really do think that the number of cases where full reverts would be a step forward for the game are very few and far between (especially when considering the large amount of content regularly being added/modified in the game). I can't think of many cases where I'd say a compromise isn't the better solution, but that is a matter of perspective (and bias, I'm sure).

To offer a bit more context there are a few particular situations I can think of where we don't revert changes completely. In particularly complex cases, multiple of those cases may apply too. **There are long term problems that weren't caused by the changes in question** Sometimes we'll buff or nerf a champion, only to have them later end up too weak or too strong. We'll then often change something else to bring them in line, rather than reverting the recent change. That's an approach we'll take when there are other considerations besides power (so most of the time). If a champion's too strong, and we've got the choice between adding better counterplay to an ability without enough, or reverting a recent damage buff to an ability that's reasonable to play against, we'll go for the counterplay for example. **We've heard negative feedback from some players about the changes, but after considering it still believe it's the right approach** Sometimes that's the result of changes that, while unpopular, are still things we feel need to be done (e.g. removing the ability to stack multiple GP10 items a couple of years back). At other times that's reflective of changes that some players do like, while others don't. That tends to be a particularly common issue when looking at changes where opinion varies widely between regions, or where a relatively small, but vocal, part of the community has views that aren't representative of the playerbase as a whole. **We've heard negative feedback from some players about the changes, but after considering it still believe it's the right approach (and we're wrong) ** Sometimes we'll mess up and sometimes we won't be quick to realize that. There are also some cases where we do go with a reversion, whether to a change that's gone to PBE or something that's been live for a while. Things like the changes to Draven Axe drop positions, that were reverted after a couple of patches, the Braum Q mana change that was reverted last year, the re-addition of crit scaling to Garen's E while the juggernaut patch was on the PBE etc.

* The Ryze update doesn't seem to have remedied the issue of him being too hard for anyone without extremely low ping and high mechanical skill to play. Are there any plans to further change him? Does the fact that he's a 450 IP champ and arguably a face of the game affect decisions made regarding him? * Karthus seems like he's an immobile mage, but it seems to me like he has distinct mechanical and strategic niches. Is he likely to pass through the mage update relatively unscathed? * I like playing Zyra, but find that her kit doesn't do a very good job at fulfilling her theme. That said, it seems pretty balanced, and reasonably healthy. Would you all agree that she's in a decent place, but that she doesn't do a good job implementing her fantasy? How does this state affect her chances of turning up in the Mages update? * Kog'Maw's changes, while undertuned, make him feel more distinctive, and give him a rather hilarious high moment. However, his animations really don't look great. I know that animation is one of the most time-consuming parts of making a champion or skin. How much do animation bandwidth concerns constrain design possibilities in these smaller reworks? * Garen's rework uses the same champion-icon thing as Tahm Kench does. Which team got this first? * Which of your reworks are you most happy with? Are there any results of your reworks being released into the wild you were particularly surprised by?

> The Ryze update doesn't seem to have remedied the issue of him being too hard for anyone without extremely low ping and high mechanical skill to play. Are there any plans to further change him? There are some plans to make him less ping-reliant especially, though it would probably be modifications to his passive and other spells, and not along the lines of a full rework. > Does the fact that he's a 450 IP champ and arguably a face of the game affect decisions made regarding him? Being a 450 IP champ is a good case for him to be easier to play than I ended up making him. As for being a face of the game, that didn't really come into play at all. > Karthus seems like he's an immobile mage, but it seems to me like he has distinct mechanical and strategic niches. Is he likely to pass through the mage update relatively unscathed? I agree that he seems pretty distinct already. I doubt he'd get much more change than someone like Sivir or Lucian did in the Marksman Update. > I like playing Zyra, but find that her kit doesn't do a very good job at fulfilling her theme. That said, it seems pretty balanced, and reasonably healthy. Would you all agree that she's in a decent place, but that she doesn't do a good job implementing her fantasy? How does this state affect her chances of turning up in the Mages update? I think she's in a decent place for the gameplay experience she offers. She feels good to play to a lot of players, and she's pretty approachable, which is something we don't do enough of nowadays. As to her fantasy, I agree it's not really executed on as well as it could, and that kind of thing is definitely a consideration we make when choosing champions to do for these mass updates. > How much do animation bandwidth concerns constrain design possibilities in these smaller reworks? Art resources are a constraint on pretty much every update. Right now, we know going into the large group updates that we have the art resources for approximately one skill per champion. > Garen's rework uses the same champion-icon thing as Tahm Kench does. Which team got this first? Tahm Kench, though I started using it within a few weeks of it being finished. > Which of your reworks are you most happy with? Are there any results of your reworks being released into the wild you were particularly surprised by? I think there's a few different ways to consider this. * Nidalee is incredibly near and dear to my heart. Her design is all over the place and is a mess of complex mechanics and inputs, but I think she offers a really fun and unique challenge to players that put the time into her, and I love to watch a good player enjoy her. *As far as which I'm most proud of from a craft perspective, I'd say Ashe. Her changes were simple and exciting to players, and I think they helped to bring her from what a lot of people considered a joke pick to a real contender at all levels. As far as which I was most surprised by once released, I'd definitely say Kog'Maw. Every bit of feedback I had from internal testing and PBE feedback led me to believe he would be broken, which is so odd in hindsight given how much he's struggled since the Marksman Update.

Will Taric be viable top lane as well as support? I've found myself enjoying champions I can play in multiple roles (like support Sion).

I think he'll be playable there. I don't know that he'll be absolutely amazing, but it wouldn't surprise me too much if he had some good matchups.

Hey, thanks for this thread. It's pretty cool that you guys are trying to stay in touch with us. My question(s) is to the Juggernaut: Skarner 1- What made you decide to lump Skarner in with the juggernaut crowd, rather than leaving him with the fighters? Clarifying my thought: Skarner's identity (at least to me) as a champion was always a chase heavy duelist, where as juggernauts are very slow but can deal tons of damage once they have you. 2- I used to play skarner as a niche pick in top lane and mid vs squishy melee assassins. Was it your intention in his design to make him a solo jungle champ? If so, where there any particular reasons for it? Im really not trying to sound upset if it comes across that way. I played a ton of skarner last season, and got attached. You could say I got stung :P I was just sad because his passive seems to pretty well limit his viability to just the jungle. So, just wanting to pick your brain a bit on it. :)
new
> What made you decide to lump Skarner in with the juggernaut crowd, rather than leaving him with the fighters? When coming up with the concept of a Juggernaut, one of the things we were trying to do was actually separate out different groups of fighters, where Juggernaut ended up being one of those groups. That said, there will be a Skarner retrospective post coming to the Boards soon I believe, and one of the things we talk about there is that we probably improperly classified Skarner as a Juggernaut and not some other kind of fighter or tank. > Was it your intention in his design to make him a solo jungle champ? If so, where there any particular reasons for it? It wasn't really a specific goal that we wanted to make him "only a jungler," but the design we went with does have that outcome.

Not sure if you can answer this since it's about a current project, but what kinds of changes might we be able to expect with the Taric update? Even just general stuff would be great. Is he going to keep his aura tank identity, or is he going down a more straight up tank/juggernaut route? Are his abilities going to be heavily altered, or are a lot of elements from his kit going to stay? And the thing on eveyone's minds about this update. Is he going to have a similarly calm and borderline flamboyant/feminine sounding voice-over, or is he no longer going to be truly truly truly outrageous? Thanks for your time, and thanks for making this post even if you don't answer my questions. <3
new
> what kinds of changes might we be able to expect with the Taric update? Lots of changes, especially visually. I'm really trying to hit a "battle healer" type of feel on him, so he's probably a weird hybrid of a Tank, Support, and Juggernaut at the end of the day, though we never really committed to a particular class with him. > Are his abilities going to be heavily altered, or are a lot of elements from his kit going to stay? Most of the abilities are heavily altered, though he will still stun enemies, heal/empower allies, and love Armor. > Is he going to have a similarly calm and borderline flamboyant/feminine sounding voice-over, or is he no longer going to be truly truly truly outrageous? We're aiming to make him fun and approachable, probably somewhat funny but not necessarily a joke himself.

Is it possible that Riot involves the community a little bit in champion updates? For example Riot ask the community if they like the changes Riot are thinking about. Because how does a champion update help, if after it most players doesn´t have fun/like the champ anymore? This will be maybe a lot of work but it could help pretending the worst and after all Riot decides if they hear on the community or not. Quinn ultimate feels weird for me (i don´t have her/ play her frequently; i don´t dislike her for it; it´s just somehow weird in my opinion). How did you come on the idea about this ultimate? Edit: I actual like the idea that you guys try to make every champ unique.
new
> Is it possible that Riot involves the community a little bit in champion updates? I would love to be able to share work with players earlier, as I feel like I make some of my most meaningful changes to champions after players have been exposed to it a bit. It's something we've talked about doing, but we want to make sure to do it in a way that doesn't set odd expectations or cause an uproar. > Quinn ultimate feels wierd for me (i don´t have her/ play her frequently; i don´t dislike her for it; it´s just somehow wierd in my opinion). How did you come on the idea about this ultimate? The idea of a travel form-esque R for Quinn was one that was being tossed over a year ago internally. Jag started that, and when we decided to dedicate ourselves to a Marksmen project a few months ago, I still thought it was a cool idea and tried to make something of it. I agree with you that it has its oddities, and I think a lot of those come from trying to make too much change with too few resources to make it happen on my end. Her R is powerful, but the channel feels a little awkward and has some weird restrictions on it, and even to me it feels like it's unique and fun, but that it's also lower overall quality than I'd like it to be.

Is Rumble a part of mage update? I don't necessarily think he needs a rework nor some big overhaul, but he does currently feel kinda weak compared to the other ap champions, so I was wondering if anyone at Riot even remembers him lol. Just please don't turn him into some weird duo-jungler thing.

Rumble's not going to be part of the mage update mid year. He is struggling at the moment though, so we've got some love for him in the next patch. It's stuff that's not easily datamined however, so I'm not sure if it's been widely noticed (smaller collision radius so he gets stuck on other units less, slight increase to Q range, Q ticking more rapidly for less damage giving it the same damage over time but making it a little easier to last hit with).
new
So both casual and pro players feels like what happened to vision was a nerf, I also feel like buffing normal trinkets is not good enough, especially with the buff sweeper got where you can have it turned on for a very long time to walk around and kill multiple wards, vs how the old one could only kill one at a time, maybe two if you were lucky and found a hot spot. What are your plans?
new
I'm not really the right guy to talk about the vision system at the moment, sorry. It's just not my area of expertise.

Hmmm Will Malzahar's {{champion:90}} Passive be revamped to be more interactive...? And will his Abililites actually be able to sync up easier for once, like look his E range Q range and W range all are somewhat different then his R only cc he has is a silence so its not like (exclude his ult) he can snare, slow, root or has a sticky effect on any of his abilities to sync up his combo to Q W E R and be the "assasin' He's label'd with. Felt off ever since I realized my E range W and Q compared to my R are off, I accidently did Q W R and tried to E and stopped it, was a mistake ofcourse but... still... Other then this, His W been nerfed recently idc but why exacly and will there be anything added to it anytime soon? Like a voidling walking out of the W at the start/End of its cast, Unless someone is E'd then it is drawn in and spawns out Sooner. About his passive why not make it actually possible to be able to have an X amount of Voidlings out? with a cap ofcourse like just 3-5 really, like it is 3 now, but comparing the time it takes for them to grow and be usefull AND the 7+ CD on his Abilities makes it hard for him to be the Void Necromancer he should and you can use your Q W E and lose half your Mana easily early game... and if you're E isn't strong enough to kill, and since your W doesn't do much and Q not reliable, and E is main dmg AND Waveclear/CS tool its hard and annoying, or can be when it fails to excute a minion(or kills it but gave no gold, Tbh idc about that part lol, voidlings cs better then some ppl anyway), Anything going to be done with his Mana issues? He does build ROD but his CDS are high asf, in a TF you can only Kill 1 person maybe with your ult then QWE the others but then you're just there waiting for spells feels off at times. As for his Q I love its uh, Aim? the way it works, sure it's hard kinda liek Viktor's E but Yeah. About his E I just hope it has a passive, where if certain Abilities hit a E'd enemy it'll trigger an effect, like in his W it would root for 1 Sec, Q the silence briefly slows (Trundle Q like slow), R spawns 1 Voidling and makes them target the Ulted enemy. And that his Ult has a scaling passive where his the amount of Voidlings he can have out, increase, like Gp's E, If so then he starts off with max 2 Voidlings, so Max would be 5, but 5 is only possible with his Ult only, 3rd would come out of E, Idk about 4th, Maybe if Q hits an E'd target and the voidling just ports in. Just ideas from an Old Malz Player. Idc about his dmg really, He scales nicely anyway so wouldn't matter if he gets gutted, aslong as he has a even nicer Necromancer, like Have an identity , maybe the Mage Wave controller, pet spawner or split pusher since Voidlings can rek turrets and minions + E and all. Oh and In general I don't really like his Ult, Same with Warwic, It's like for both, You've disabled you foe, but you're unable to do much aswell, and feels outdated and kind of Old or stale sometimes, I like the concept and all but Yeah. Idk what would fit the void if it is changed or removed if ever, Only idea I had is that he Throws up some Gooey void juice on enemy and it makes voidlings Attack X enemy and something idk. it would maybe supress someone in a certain way, But... Not like now. Reminds me of that Episode of PPG where a guy got rekt by a bunch of cockroaches, Guess if voidlings did that / Goo it would trigger a Blind ish effect with mudges on the screen, that aren't random but something like Graves/Quinn Q/W. Tl;dr Will Malz Passive be more interactive with his other Abilities like his E? Are there any range,Mana and CD changes going to take place in an upcoming update of him and the other mages? and Would there be specific items for these kind of mages? And will his ultimate or other abilities be changed in any way to help him in anyway? And would he have a reliable source of CC without CC'ing himself or being in too much danger or just a brief small CC?

Do you plan on touching Kayle for the Mage rework, or anything that would really impact her?

Maybe some items she would like to use might changes, but I think it would actually be a disservice to Kayle if we tried to make her more mage-like. She seems like she'd be a better carry support, or Yasuo-esque magic damage dealer or something like that. No, no plans for Kayle specifically, and I feel like it's safe to share her and not others, because I don't really think she's a mage (despite having a few mage elements).

I haven't asked him about Riven specifically recently, but Xypherous is always funny when he talks about his champions, because they all seem to make him sad in some way or another, from Riven to Nautilus to Orianna. I'm not really sure if Riven makes him especially sad.

What's the general goal of the Mage update? Are there any plans for Cassiopeia?

Generally, the goal of the Mage udpate is to make mages more distinct among other mages, and to give them tools that make them uniquely powerful in that space. We'd really like to be able to make a lot of these characters more valuable in a way that doesn't just mean having more burst damage. No specifics on which champions are/aren't in the Mage Update, sorry.
Just out of interest will taric still have his heal and the passive armour aura or is this a complete rework with all new abilities, already know that his point and click dazzle will be gone. Extremely hyped for this btw. Do you consider olaf to be a juggernaut, if so do you have any plans on giving him a rework? What do you think of how most of the adcs are following the same cookie cutter builds?

> Just out of interest will taric still have his heal and the passive armour aura or is this a complete rework with all new abilities, already know that his point and click dazzle will be gone. Extremely hyped for this btw. Taric will still heal, and he will still be a high Armor, Armor-loving champion. Few, if any, of his skills will be the same as they are on Live. > Do you consider olaf to be a juggernaut, if so do you have any plans on giving him a rework? We do consider Olaf a Juggernaut. We no longer have plans to give him a full rework at the moment, but we were considering one in the update that we ended up not doing. The basic premise was that Ragnarok was an event that, once triggered, it became more and more intense and lasted until the end of the game. Ideas for it were something like "When Olaf hits level 18, all champions on the map constantly have their current Health reduced by X% each second for the rest of the game." I'm glad we didn't do this in the long run, but I really wish I could have at least seen it in action. > What do you think of how most of the adcs are following the same cookie cutter builds? Definitely not ideal, though I'd also say it's not the most surprising outcome ever. Things like this usually end up becoming cookie cutter.

1. Do you regret making Ryze even more of a straight mana-building spambot? 2. Can you give any insight as to how different new Taric is? 3. Opinion on the current state of Kog and Quinn? 4. > Do you regret making Ryze even more of a straight mana-building spambot? There are several things about Ryze I wish I could redo or go back and fix, but making him a mana-building spambot was intended. > Can you give any insight as to how different new Taric is? Visually and in gameplay, he is truly, truly different. I think he will be less changed than Sion overall, but more than Poppy. His gameplay is still very battle healer, just very different. > Opinion on the current state of Kog and Quinn? * Kog - Honestly, there are a bunch of people here that are really scared of what the game looks like if Kog'Maw is really strong, and I just don't see eye-to-eye with them. There is a hunch that he will be broken in an organized team comp, and it may turn out to be true in pro play, but I really don't feel like it's fair to Kog'Maw players that we've been so conservative in his balance. I really do think he offers a unique and fun experience to players, but I can totally understand people that says he's not worth putting the effort into playing at the moment. * Quinn - I'm pretty happy with how things turned out with Quinn, though I still feel really bad for all the players that no longer enjoy playing her. I know there are a lot of players out there playing her and enjoying her at the moment, but it still sucks to know that the update ruined her for some people. Quinn was a big learning experience for me in how I approach the Group Update changes in the early stages, and I hope that change in mindset makes my upcoming mages less polarizing for their current players. > Would you be willing to share information on the "minor changes" to Vel'koz in the immobile mage update? No specifics on the champions in the Mage Update, sorry. > Who/what do you feel is the most unhealthy for the game right now? For a singular champion, I think it's almost embarrassing that Rengar exists in his current form, and we tend to act like it's not an issue. As for the single thing I think is most unhealthy for the game, I'd say its incredible barrier to entry.
What direction is the Taric Rework going? Right now I feel like he is all over the place in that he has sustain, burst, auras, hard CC, but doesn't really shine at anything of these things except for maybe hard CC (but only because it's targeted I think.) He has AP, Armour, and HP scalings which doesn't bode well with itemization because you'll always be missing something. As far as identities go, what direction/speciality are you aiming for? I see this could be a problem. Auras are taken by Sona, Sustain is taken by Soraka, Hard CC and peeling is better done by Thresh, Leona, and Janna, Armor / tank is taken by Braum. Right now, I think Taric fits in somewhere between Braum and Tahm Kench in the level of selfishness. Personally, I would like Taric to be a more offensive support, akin to Tahm Kench maybe. I like his current passive idea and I like the way he lacks ranged poke / abilities in general. Maybe a zone control oriented Taric could possibly work, or are we going to look at another generalist support like Nami, Sona, etc?
new
I can't get into too many specifics on the Taric changes at the moment, but I do think that his ultimate is going to be a game changer that is especially well suited to be used with and against certain types of champions.

Why do you feel like shipping the Skarner rework was a good idea? As someone who has about 550 games with him and has now dropped Skarner completely, I feel very ripped off. I loved Skarner. From his theme to his lore to his abilities he was my favorite champion. But now after the rework, it doesn't even feel like I'm playing Skarner anymore. In my opinion, the reason he feels so lack luster is his passive. Not once since his rework have I actually had a teamfight in any of the zones. On top of that, the zones don't even feel all that powerful or useful for anything but farming. To me, the rework seems like a total letdown. Why does Skarner absolutely have to have these zones? They aren't impactful or healthy in any way.
new
> Why do you feel like shipping the Skarner rework was a good idea? I think Skarner does offer a unique play experience unlike any other champion has to offer, though I think it has too many costs attached to it. Were we to do Juggernauts over again, we likely wouldn't choose to work on Skarner. I think there are definite upsides to his update, but we likely could have gotten more bang for our buck elsewhere. > Why does Skarner absolutely have to have these zones? We set out to make a champion that was defined by pre-determined zones of power, and I think in a lot of ways that was accomplished. That said, I don't think the execution was as good as players deserved. It feels too forced/constrained.

I'll echo the desire to hear what you guys have in mind for Koggy. I... play him a lot. Like. A whole lot. And after finally giving him a whirl on Rift (I mostly play Dominion) I think I've been able to identify why there's such a huge disconnect in his power between the two maps. Aside from death being more heavily punish on Rift (hard to do anything about that) Kog's biggest issues are his crippling mana problems, iffy early game, and his dependence on the short W buff to be relevant at all. Because fights are so much smaller on Dominion, that 6 second uptime isn't as much of a deal breaker, but it really hurts on Rift where battles last longer. It feels like he really struggles to make good on his gameplay fantasy (super sustained damage immobile turret champion). Are you guys planning on doing anything to make that fantasy really come to life? Have you considered that maybe the remake didn't go *far* enough? He's still got that out of place Innate that some other part of his kit could be moved to, that would help focus him down a bit more. Regardless of your answer, thanks for the consideration. And, really, thanks for the Kog remake. I really do enjoy it and I think you did a great job of making Kog feel more Kog-y. It just needs to be tuned a bit better for Rift.
new
> Are you guys planning on doing anything to make that fantasy really come to life? I hope we can do some tuning to better deliver on some of the stuff he has too offer, as my personal opinion is that we've been too conservative with his balance, especially as it pertains to his base stats and R. > Have you considered that maybe the remake didn't go far enough? Absolutely. One of the difficult things about doing the "many champions at once" approach like we did with Marksmen and are now doing with Mages is picking champions that we can make really positive change for in one or two marquee changes. It's arguable Kog'Maw needed more to really be finished. His passive, for example, certainly isn't amazing, but it's not necessarily doing a ton of harm being there at the moment.

(Hope this doesn't come across as stand-offish) All-in-all, I like the idea of Kog'maw's rework, in the context of accentuating his strengths (Long range, tank melting percent health auto attacks) and weaknesses (Immobile, if anything gets too close you're already dead), but I can't help but feel that something's off. Do you feel like he could use some follow-up work, or is he currently just not fit for solo queue, needing a coordinated team to back him up? On the topic of immobile mages, are you allowed to share who you're working on, or is it too early in development for you to be spoiling anything (In case something happens and the project gets shelved or moved over to someone else or whatever)
new
> Do you feel like he could use some follow-up work, or is he currently just not fit for solo queue, needing a coordinated team to back him up? I do. I feel he's unacceptably (though not horribly) undertuned at the moment, and that there are small buffs we can give him that will make him feel a lot better to play. I'm absolutely willing to admit I'm wrong if pro play comes around and we find he's a mainstay pick. > On the topic of immobile mages, are you allowed to share who you're working on? Not yet, sorry. You'll have to pry that out of Statikk or Meddler.

Hey there repertoir! Quick few questions on Quinn. 1) what do the numbers say about her strength right now? To strong, to weak? 2) are we still looking at her channel time frustration spaces, namely minions canceling it? 3) when are you free to get lunch with me and endosymbiosis? Twitch chat shipped it man! 4) I love love LOVE the vault over wall extra bounce back space/landing on that side interaction, but would it be possible to special case vault so that it didn't function like that around turrets/turrets debris? I'd understand if you didn't want to give her that strength, but it's definitely hurt me on tower dives where I thought I could hit and run :/. Bug Reports: 1) if Quinn recalls while using her ultimate when she has baron or rift Herald buff, she doesn't cancel her ultimate. 2) if harrier is about to mark a Zac that has his passive up, but he dies before valor finishes marking him, valor will mark the untargettable central Zac blob. Thanks for your time rep, you're still my favorite rioter :)

> 1) what do the numbers say about her strength right now? To strong, to weak? Probably on the strong side of things, though it doesn't seem obnoxiously so. > 2) are we still looking at her channel time frustration spaces, namely minions canceling it? There are changes there I'd like to make if power ever permits it, but I don't currently think it's a good time. > 3) when are you free to get lunch with me and endosymbiosis? Twitch chat shipped it man! Pretty much any weekend that I don't spend here fiddling with champions I'm about to ship. > 4) I love love LOVE the vault over wall extra bounce back space/landing on that side interaction, but would it be possible to special case vault so that it didn't function like that around turrets/turrets debris? It's possible that I could do something, but it would mostly be a matter of me making assumptions about what I assume you wanted with each Vault given your surrounding, and that could go horribly wrong if done improperly. Currently, we don't really differentiate walls that are debris from walls that are terrain. > 1) if Quinn recalls while using her ultimate when she has baron or rift Herald buff, she doesn't cancel her ultimate. Oh, right. I need to fix that. > 2) if harrier is about to mark a Zac that has his passive up, but he dies before valor finishes marking him, valor will mark the untargettable central Zac blob. That I should fix as well.

With the upcoming immobile mage update, I'm wondering if there is anything in store for Lux specifically. While I think she's fine as she is right now, something that I wouldn't mind trying to see how it plays would be to replace her aoe shield with a single target shield/stealth that would allow her or one of her allies to get out of a jam, or to allow them to safely position to initiate on an enemy. Otherwise, despite being unlikely to happen, I would love to make it so that immobilizing crowd control immediately stops all non-ultimate mobility spells, instead of limiting it to specific cases like Yasuo's dash or Veigar's cage.
new
No specifics on which mages we're working on yet, sorry. As to immobilizing effects stopping mobility spells. I think this is something we should do more often. One of the tricky things about doing it is making it feel intentional on the player's part. For the longest time, I had this in for Rune Prison while doing Ryze's update, but most of the time it happened, it was accidental at best.

How's the Taric kit update looking with regards to skillshots and builds? Will he retain the armour increasing aura/point-and-click CC, or will he be more skillshot based?
new
> How's the Taric kit update looking with regards to skillshots and builds? There aren't any line missile skillshots in the new Taric kit, though he won't be quite as reliable as before. To compensate, some of the stuff he can do is really powerful if he pulls it off or times it right. As for builds, the dude still really loves his Glacial Shroud items.

I guess my questions are going to be Kog and the mage Update. First, I would ask if the mage update is going to involve changes to the mana itemization and CDR? Asking mostly because it seems like a big button issue. Second, What kind of Direction are we looking at with Kog? Are we going to cement him as an ADC? Are we going put power back into his AP build? Are we going to support an AP/AS build? What kind of build options should we expect? And I guess most importantly, how has his Double AS feature, affected team comps built around him? At the moment, I feel like his potential team synergy, may reduce his stand alone power.
new
> First, I would ask if the mage update is going to involve changes to the mana itemization and CDR? We've begun talking about Mana itemization, but whatever changes we make in this regard are not likely to be as robust as the Marksmen itemization changes. Personally, I think that's okay, since it seems like mage items are mostly pretty cool and unique already. > Second, What kind of Direction are we looking at with Kog? Are we going to cement him as an ADC? Are we going put power back into his AP build? Are we going to support an AP/AS build? What kind of build options should we expect? I would love to put some power back into Kog'Maw's ultimate. I think there's room to add some power to him, and I think amping up his R would be a meaningful, needed change to make the playstyle feel like it should.
Hey @RiotRepertoir When designing Garen's kit and making it so he could kill any carry on the enemy team, why didn't you lower the early Q damage but make it scale into late better. I feel like right now Garen's Q is extremely strong in the early/mid game because of the silence letting him win any trades and the huge AD ratio on it, but it's mostly used for utility late game. Could you please balance it a bit so there's more counterplay in the early game? Hate getting silenced into a true damage per second spin, then a 700 true damage execution ult...

Are you (Riot) going to make Kog'maw not horrible? Ignoring all the other problems with him, are you (Riot) aware that while attack speed is absurdly OP in damage calculators, it's really bad in fights? What direction are you going to try to take Taric? Will he still be an armor/aura support?

Yes. His W is both an intended strength and weakness. Learning to use it properly is key to winning on the champion. > What direction are you going to try to take Taric? Taric is one of your current projects? Interesting. What is it you guys are hoping to accomplish with Taric? Are you wanting to make him more specialized, more of a generalist? Stick to AP, Stick to tank items, make them both viable, make him ad? Is he going to be a multirole champion, or more of a stick to one lane kind of thing? You probably can't share specific details of skills and stuff yet, but I'd like to know the thought process you guys are using while you approach the Taric update.

> Taric is one of your current projects? Interesting. What is it you guys are hoping to accomplish with Taric? Bring him up to date in the game. More of a philosophical question. In a different thread, you replied to a post that had this quote of yours: _"To all the players upset that they cannot turn into Valor and fight anymore, I am sorry that that was so important to you as far as playing the champion goes, but that aspect of these changes is just not going to change. Truly, I'm very sorry if that ruins the champion for you, but I'd prefer to be forthcoming about the fact that it's not going to change than leave you hanging waiting for an answer forever. I hope you can find enjoyment eventually in this new version of the champion, or that there is another champion out there that can give you a similar feeling to the previous version of Quinn, but if not, I understand."_ You once basically told me the same thing about Skarner; you were sorry that I no longer enjoyed the champion. I want to ask what players are supposed to do when an identity they enjoy is taken away. I no longer recognize Skarner as the Skarner I enjoyed and there isn't any other champion that gives me a similar feeling to the previous version of Skarner. What is supposed to be the next step for someone like me, in your eyes or Riot's eyes? Why should I keep trying to find a new champ to like when the exact same thing could happen again? I liked the old Cassiopeia. I know that isn't your territory. But the same thing happened there too. Out with the old, in with the new, sorry if you don't like it, but tough. It really feels like Riot actively dislikes the identities of some of the champs I like best.
new
> What is supposed to be the next step for someone like me, in your eyes or Riot's eyes? Why should I keep trying to find a new champ to like when the exact same thing could happen again? I don't really feel like I can offer meaningful advice for your next steps after a champion you enjoy has been changed in a way that no longer appeals to you. My hope is that there is another champion out there that you can latch onto and enjoy, but that realistically won't always be the case. We've gotten a lot of feedback that we've destroyed a few champion identities with recent updates, and I think that criticism is fair. It will take time to prove out, but I do think current identity is a consideration we'll be giving much more attention to with upcoming changes like the Mage Updates. It really is a bad feeling to know that people have quit playing the game because they no longer recognize their champions, and I hope that we can build that trust back up to where players can be predominately excited to know that their favorite champion is getting some attention.

About Kog... Do you think he's currently balanced? I think Kog suffers a bit from Cass syndrome where if certain situations are met, all you have to do is hit one key and proceed to melt, forget about moving or anything, just attack and pray your champion is broken enough. I can't help but think that this is not optimum design and that while fun at times, finding a person dedicated to Kog like Gosu to Vayne/Lucian can be a bit difficult since the champion doesn't has much depth. With all of this I think that Kog'maw is not played nearly as half as he should be and I'd like to know if you as a designer have some ideas that could bring the little void puppy closer to the popularity spot.
new
> About Kog... Do you think he's currently balanced? I think he's a bit undertuned at the moment, and if his performance continues to be poor, we can hopefully give him some love. I continue to think his kit offers a fun and unique playstyle, but he's also not the type of champion I expect will ever have a really high play rate unless he's overtuned, as his playstyle is niche and lower agency than most really popular champions.

Do you feel Skarner's update was too "low-scope" to truly make him fit into the Juggernaut category? He's more of a CC tank with good damage rather than a Juggernaut and I think there's a lot of potential with Skarner if given a more extensive rework. Just like Mordekaiser they seem to suffer from having a lot of potential design wise but not having gotten as much attention as they should have. Any chance you revisit the Juggernauts some time in the future to try and polish those two and maybe add a new batch of low-scope reworks to the bunch?

He's more of a CC tank with good damage rather than a Juggernaut and I think there's a lot of potential with Skarner if given a more extensive rework. I pretty much agree with all of this. If we ever want to really get Skarner really right, he needs more than just the partial attention he's gotten here and there over the years. It's not fair to his players to keep going halfway on him. > Any change you revisit the Juggernauts some time in the feature to try and polish those two and maybe add a new batch of low-scope reworks to the bunch? I would like to see an update to True Damage for specific champions and current buffs. A prime example would be DoT's - seeing as how SOME hurt like hell as the player levels up and builds AP...whereas others are left for dead so to speak. {{champion:17}} -- DoT based off AP and is quite painful late game (Acceptable, but i'm going somewhere with this.) {{champion:29}} -- DoT based off ??? stacking damage as the champion levels, however...the True Damage ticks are weak to non-lethal at best. Highest Tick off his DoT was roughly 36 at 6 stacks. This is irrelevant to lvl 11 - 18 champions, as the HP we have at these levels negates the threat of the DoT. While Twitch's stacked poison used in conjunction with E does shave off quite a bit of HP at 18, it's potency isn't anything worth fearing. Any plans to make his poison reflect actual damage? Or will there be a need for AP with this character? While a beastly ADC or CC...twitch's abilities lack late-game...
new
> Any plans to make his poison reflect actual damage? Or will there be a need for AP with this character? There are no immediate plans to significantly change Twitch's poison damage, though it wouldn't surprise me if we did something, since it really does seem pretty pathetic most of the time.

Ashe rework: feels nice mostly, gj on that, she feels much more powerful. Her Q's cost-to-empower ratio still feels a bit of a steep hill to attain after the changes, even with the most recent buff when compared to other, more potent ADC steroids (Trist Q, Jinx Q, Twitch Q, etc). Are there any more plans on that front, as shes still a bit out of the bot lane contention? Skarner rework: have you considered making it so if Skarner can capture all 6 of his shrines, he could gain their buff on a global scale for X seconds? Kog rework: Nice on paper. From a practical standpoint it killed the champion. His early game was slashed in half of its original power (and he wasn't all that strong in that front), his W early power was gutted, he no longer works with Trinity Force, since casting spells now actually causes him to lose DPS (meaing he lost the unique status in the game of being both a hypercarry and Trinity Force carry) and his ult has little to no power except as the occassional execute on low health targets, also killing AP Kog. Also because of his current stationary artillery turret playstyle, JuggerMaw comps went to hell, because JuggerMaw relies on constant re-positioning, moving, autoing and kiting. What are the plans to fix Kog if there any ATM? Mage class update: Will this update also involve an item rework? Specifically a revamp to CDR items. ATM the CDR items are soo bad, that mids are going for the Frosty Ghosts, a support item mind you as a CDR item. An interesting option would be to include the Lost Chapter line of items from the Black Market Brawlers (or something along those lines in terms of buildpaths, thus creating an AP parallel with the Zeal line of Crit items and making AP itemization more flexible). Also in terms of NLR items like Luden's Echo which atm is hardly ever built, are you guys planning on doing to alter that, especially considering the new AD assassin item that is being released? What are you thoughts/what can you say about that ATM? Taric rework: How fabulous will he after the rework?
new
> Are there any more plans on that front, as shes still a bit out of the bot lane contention? Ashe seems pretty solid to me from a power perspective at the moment. If I think of some stuff to do to make her Q more usable, I'll see if I can get them in the game, since I think there are some things that feel off about it. > have you considered making it so if Skarner can capture all 6 of his shrines, he could gain their buff on a global scale for X seconds? Yes, but the reason I chose not to do something like that was that I still wanted to make sure Skarner was trying to win League of Legends instead of playing a mini-game within his mini-game. > What are the plans to fix Kog if there any ATM? Waiting to see if he turns out to be a problem in pro play in his current form. If not, I'd like to bump up his base stats and R a bit. Four questions from me, if you don't mind I'll cut straight to the chase: 1. What direction would you say is the new Taric leaning more towards: Fabio Lanzoni or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? Perhaps you could've somehow managed a spicy mix of both? Or nothing of the sort? Can you guarantee he'll stay outrageous. 2. Mages, being what they are, have been rather outclassed in many different aspects be it the meta, new champion mechanics, new gameplay factors etc etc, for quite alot of seasons now( 3 give or take). Thanks to that, they're forced to itemize and adapt quite strongly compared to the rest of the classes in the game. Their kits allow them to adjust their strategy on the fly thanks to their "modular design" like maxing the shield instead of the AoE slow on Orianna, maxing the Glacial path on Lissandra for the mobility instead of her W for the CC, and many more. Likewise, they have to itemize in such a way, but unfortunately are arguably set back by doing so, especially when you take the AD/Bruiser flexibility+gold efficiency into account, since the start of this season. What's going to happen with the way they itemize from now on? Are you aiming for flexibility and strategic decisions, or maybe solving their innate issues upfront and then evolving the way they build? 3. Will there ever be a time you'll explore building gameplay into a 3D plain? My personal opinion is that being able to literally jump over a projectile skillshot without being untargetable(damn Fizz) would revolutionize the game as we play it, even it's just 1 spell in 200-ish champions. 4. In your need to keep the game fresh, interesting and enjoyable, you've made some pretty bold design choices throughout multiple champion developments, some of them get scrapped, while others grow into something new and different for the game, with various different levels of perception by the playerbase. Has there been a time the developing teams thought about going through with their "wild" ideas and how did that impact token champion's development? Cheers, Ironhold.

> What direction would you say is the new Taric leaning more towards: Fabio Lanzoni or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? Perhaps you could've somehow managed a spicy mix of both? Or nothing of the sort? Are you aiming for flexibility and strategic decisions, or maybe solving their innate issues upfront and then evolving the way they build? We've started looking into Mage Itemization a bit already, with an early focus on thinking about what Mana itemization means and looks like. It's likely it's not just a Ryze stat anymore, and that Tear and RoA builds aren't the only paths to Mana. > Will there ever be a time you'll explore building gameplay into a 3D plain? I'll be honest and say I have no idea what the technical challenges involved in something like that would be. > Has there been a time the developing teams thought about going through with their "wild" ideas and how did that impact token champion's development? Depending on your definition of "wild," I'd say this type of thing happens all the time. Corki's "The Package / Special Delivery" and Garen's "Villainy" are products of some wild ideas that made it into the game. We've had other ones that we pumped the brakes on as well. At various points in time, we saw stuff like Udyr was spawning crazy additional neutral monsters during Juggernauts development, Olaf triggering literally game-ending events, and Fiora teleporting an enemy to far off lands to duel them.

1. What are the main objectives for the mage update? 2. Do you think immobile mages are at a huge disadvantage against the very mobile midlaners that we have right now? Right now, it's very easy for the usual mid laners (Zed, Ahri, Yasuo and others) to burst them down. 3. Will the patch include a better itemization for CDR? Right now, there are only 1 AP items that fits on most mages : Morellonomicon. Every other CDR items either doesn't give AP stats, are for supports/tanks or are too specific to a certain type of AP (Nashor's tooth for Attack Speed mage) 4. Will new items be included to help immobile mages to deal against the amount of gapclosers there is in the game? 5. Do you feel that skarner's rework didn't quite made it to the objective you guys had in mind. I feel like he even less played than before. 6. Was it in your plan to remove skarner from the possibility of him going top lane? I know very few playing him top, but still. Thanks for your time ;)

No definitive plans yet, however. > Will new items be included to help immobile mages to deal against the amount of gapclosers there is in the game? I think it fell short in a few meaningful ways, yes. However, I don't think that play rate is really an issue. We expect him to be a less popular champion, and the point of his changes were aimed more at providing a valuable, unexplored gameplay niche than they were to make him more popular in the long term. > Was it in your plan to remove skarner from the possibility of him going top lane? No, but that was the outcome. If I could go back in time and start Juggernauts design from scratch, there would be a bunch of stuff I'd do differently on Skarner.

Is there any reason that AOE ground target spells don't have consistent damage timing? EXAMPLE: Brand W appears and has a brief delay before dealing damage and applying blaze. HOWEVER Soraka E damages the instant it appears and LATER roots Zyra R damages the INSTANT it appears and later knocks up Just wondering why there is this inconsistency, as it seems to (more so with zyra than soraka) provide reward where reward is maybe not due? I guess Soraka E sorta makes sense since you are silenced instantly as well, but it still seems odd to me. As someone who likes to dabble in designing characters, I am interested to see if you have any feedback on this!
new
> Just wondering why there is this inconsistency, as it seems to (more so with zyra than soraka) provide reward where reward is maybe not due? Mostly, this just has to do with intended counterplay and what-not. There's not a specific rule that we go by. It really just depends on the gameplay being aimed for. The less delay there is on stuff like this, the safer it is to assume that the designer thought the spell in questionable needed to have highly reliable characteristics. For instance, some of the primary counterplay to Brand is dodging his W, whereas that's much less the case with Soraka's E.

>Juggernauts Champion Updates - Garen/Skarner Oh. Due to fiasco surrounding these guys' live releases, what's your personal policy regarding community views in shaping your decisions on what should or shouldn't go into champions?
new
> Due to fiasco surrounding these guys' live releases, what's your personal policy regarding community views in shaping your decisions on what should or shouldn't go into champions? If this is about balance, then I'd say it can be very dangerous to rely too heavily on community PBE reception/feedback to shape balance decisions, but it's hard not to give it too much weight, because I have very little else other than internal data to go off. If it's more about which mechanics should and shouldn't stay, I try to get a feel for what the most loved/hated changes are and try to see if there are solutions to addressing player pain in this regard before release, in a way that doesn't compromise the long term goals of the champion. I didn't do very well in either category for Skarner in particular, though I think some good mechanics feedback was given and heeded in Garen's case.
A few things: 1) Could you go and ask, Whether Windspeaker's blessing is supposed to increase healing that you perform on yourself? (Nami W on herself, Sona W, Janna R, etc.) Because on the Pre-season update page, it says that Heals/Shields on allies (Excluding yourself) are stronger and grant bonus resistances. People say that it boosts healing/shields cast on yourself, but I've found that it doesn't, especially since I play a TON of Nami, where I spam heals on myself and frequently check to see how much bonus healing I'm getting. The tooltip in game also doesn't properly reflect the tooltip in the mastery page. 2) For the Mage's update, Are you looking at better defining Veigar's role as either burst mage or anti-AP? Right now his Ult feels torn between, "Mega Burst" and "Use only on enemy AP champions" 3) Also for the Mage's update, For Malzahar, Are you thinking about possibly changing his Ult so that he's more viable in Higher competetive Elos where people know how to rush a QSS? The big reason Morde got picked in Pro play was because his ult worked on Dragon, in otherwords a way for his ult, which would otherwise be useless, had a very good powerful use that wasn't dependent on enemy champions. 4) For Mages in general, did you guys consider reducing the AP on all AP items, leaving their costs the same, then buffing every AP champions AP ratios to compensate for the massively reduced AP? This would have solved the fix of gold effeciency on items, while simultaneously leaving AP champions like they're still solid. 5) Do you feel like Skarner is still in a good spot? or do you think that Vi's ult overlaps too much with Skarner's and does Skarner's job Better?
new
Can't really comment on which specific mages are/aren't in the update, sorry. > For Mages in general, did you guys consider reducing the AP on all AP items, leaving their costs the same, then buffing every AP champions AP ratios to compensate for the massively reduced AP? Can't say we've thought of exactly this, but it sounds like an idea worth considering. > Do you feel like Skarner is still in a good spot? or do you think that Vi's ult overlaps too much with Skarner's and does Skarner's job Better? I can't confidently say he's in a much better spot than he was before his update, so to me (and many others here), that's not good enough.

Does the future mage update include support mages (Ex: Sona, Soraka, Janna), or is it exclusive to champions designated to middle lane?

I have a question that I've been sitting on for awhile, it's more general than some of the other folks here, but I haven't really found the answer anywhere else, so I figure here is as good a place as any: * When you go to Update a specific champion (kit, lore, etc.) how do you get your feedback about what players like about them? I've never seen discussions where we're directly asked "What do you like/love about X champion?" (not on Boards anyway). I do understand that this somewhat opens a can of worms, as people can get upset over things that weren't kept by arguing "We told you we loved it! Y U REMOVE/CHANGE?" which ends up being really difficult to deal with. So do you guys just kinda lurk on the forums/consult with people that are severely into a specific champion, or is it all kind-of internalized? It does seem like you guys hit the nail on the head most times, but I've always wondered. Sorry if it's a loaded question.

This is something I don't think we do well enough, and it's gotten us into some trouble recently. We're in a difficult position of wanting player feedback, but also wanting to surprise players with cool new stuff, and I think we've been valuing the surprise over the long term quality too much recently. I tend to lurk the forums and check on threads relevant to my projects, but I really do wish there was more of a feedback channel in the early stages.

(This may get downvoted a lot but) Doesn't taric have like what appears to be diamond armor? (Well it looks like diamonds...ITS A GEM!) With diamonds being one of the most strongest things in the world.... I was thinking randomly one day. "What if because he uses diamonds, he's immune to true damage?" like Diamond armor passive "This unit takes no true damage" What happens is, it takes the true damage and Adds it to the regular damage that still gets reduced by armor. and he would truly be the ONLY counter to many of the champions who now sport true damage in their kits... and it would only make sense on him because of who he is and #REALLY give him a type of edge that people could perhaps always use ensuring that he'll never truly lose flavor.. "From coals to diamonds." ~Taric And there's a lot of champions who deal True damage - http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/True_damage I'm not trying to play favorites with Taric, I don't even play him, but it was just a thought one day and seeing this brought it back up from my subconscious. ________________________________________ it's just a thought, something to post. Make a conversation.. Get some of my daily salt <3
new
> "What if because he uses diamonds, he's immune to true damage?" This is a cool idea that I hadn't really thought of. It would probably need to have a little more gameplay to it, like if he converted all true damage to physical damage or something like that, but I think the idea is generally really cool.

Do you think it's possible that for Ashe, if she uses W or ults and the abilities hit enemy/neutral units, it can refresh her focus stacks? It's hard to stack focus up for teamfights because there's a lot of dancing outside of enemy ranges while constantly repositioning. Maybe this could help with that?
new
> Do you think it's possible that for Ashe, if she uses W or ults and the abilities hit enemy/neutral units, it can refresh her focus stacks? It's not out of the question to do something like that, and several people have asked for this to return, but my personal opinion on the matter is that I would really like to preserve the simplicity behind it being only basic attacks, as I think it solidifies the feel of the ability. Waiting for spells to hit would provide flexibility, but I think it could come at a cost to some of the other flow going on in the skill.
Will Taric's joke change? I understand that champions tend to have a large variety of emotes now but honestly as someone with over 100 games logged on the bastard I will be genuinely upset if it is removed.

Any insight into why Rengar is allowed to blow squishies up from true stealth, while Evelynn had to receive blanket nerfs? From % max hp + E magic damage burst + DFG, to the wet noodle, current % no base damage ult/ physical damage on-hit application E on a mage/assassin. Yet DFG was removed, and Eve neither received buffs or reverts. At least you saw Evelynn coming when she was on you. You could at least attempt an escape.
new
> Any insight into why Rengar is allowed to blow squishies up from true stealth, while Evelynn had to receive blanket nerfs? Not a lot of insight into this, unfortunately. I don't think Rengar's current state is one that we should have allowed for so long, and I hope we do something about it soon.

What do you plan to do with taric's Personality, I love his current personality but kinda wish it would be fleshed out more. Also have you considered turning him into a juggernaut, I feel he could be a decent one just needs some tweaks with his ult. Are balance changes up for vote or discussion? To use early S5 as an example, the competitive scene had stagnated into about 2 picks for each role. At first, you only introduced incremental changes that tweaked one or two of those champions. Right after that, you dished out major champion and item reworks each patch. Was the former in preparation of the latter? Or did what happened convince you that more drastic changes were in order?
new
> Was the former in preparation of the latter? Or did what happened convince you that more drastic changes were in order? I don't necessarily think we went small early in the season so that we could go bigger later. In fact, I think one thing we are going to try to do this upcoming season is not hit the game with such huge changes at odd points in the season. For example, we might do a big patch a few patches before Worlds, but we would probably try to give ourselves a few more patches worth of cushion to let the game calibrate if we did something as big as Juggernauts or Marksmen again.

Since you did speak about Rengar whose one of my favorite champs ;p, do any of you currently speak about him at the moment? Like "Maybe we should do this or that" to him? I have seen some suggestions that Rengar's ult could have him roar to give the enemy a better indication that he is coming. I think this is pretty neat idea since I know that the "!" often doesn't give enough people to react or notice that he is near.
new
> Since you did speak about Rengar whose one of my favorite champs ;p, do any of you currently speak about him at the moment? Like "Maybe we should do this or that" to him? There's some talk starting up, but I don't think anything's really stood out as a winner. That champion has an awesome fantasy, and I hope that someday he can have cool gameplay to go with it that isn't simply "cheese a guy from stealth."

I was wonder of what you think of blink escape/abilities in the game? I play other rmoba, Hero of the Storm, where they don't have blink escape until very late in the game and the most mobile heros have dash escape. new
> I was wonder of what you think of blink escape/abilities in the game? There's a place and time for them, but I think they're overused. These types of skills tend to give champions lots of options to deal with various scenarious, so it's always tempting to consider them when making something.

Skarner has been one of my favourite champions post juggernaut rework and it's a real shame to see him deemed as something of a failure - I've personally found that he functions perfectly as either a typical 'juggernaut' or as a tank depending on how you want to play/build him and I think that, combined with the very unique play experience he offers, makes him an incredibly fun and rewarding champion to put time into learning. After you've been speaking about wanting to change him I just have to ask, **are there any drastic changes planned for Skarner/what aspects of him would you most want to change?** Thanks!
new
> are there any drastic changes planned for Skarner/what aspects of him would you most want to change? Currently, we don't have any plans for Skarner. I probably wasn't very clear since I am trying to burn through a lot of these, but at this point, it's really not so much that the Skarner in the game today is a failure. It's more that his update (much of which I am responsible for), didn't clearly make him better than he was before, so it's more that the process was a failure. I'm glad you're enjoying him, and I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as seeing him dramatically changed in the near future.

I think she could be a really cool candidate for someone that uses her blades to attack two targets at once, or she could just generally deliver a lot better on blade telekinesis thing. I'd try to leave Q alone at all costs unless it was to make it feel better. I love Bladesurge. Is there any goal to make champions that have a higher skill cap actually have a larger impact on the game? There is currently no risk-rewards for playing hard champions, and at the current state the easier champions are, for some reason, extremely strong. As syndra, for example, you should be able to outplay a Dr.Mundo, but no. With cleavers dealing 400-600 damage and a home guard ult, theres really no outplay potential at this point. I'm not trying to be rude or sarcastic, but honestly some champion are just too easy and too strong, at the same time, which makes the game boring to play and annoying as hell.

I don't think it's intended or even necessarily true that the "easy" champions are stronger than the others. I know it's just an example, but in the scenario you provided, Mundo is intended to be really powerful against champions like Syndra, not because she's hard to play, but because she's a mage that can't typically 1-combo him, and he is built to destroy these types of champions. I would expect Syndra to need to be with her teammates in order manage a champion like Mundo unless she was really fed, since by design, his type of character (not his ease of play) is intended to be strong against hers. I don't think you've come across as rude, by the way. Thank you for the post.

Just want to say, if any changes are going to be made to Vel'Koz I think your input would be great. I love Kog'maw and his usage as a siege champ and see certain similarities. As an observation it seems Vel'Koz's fantasy is the consumption of knowledge. It would be awesome if rather than "exploiting weaknesses" that knowledge would give him something more meaningful. Could be fun to create a Zilean interaction with Vel too... I noticed all the champs you have worked on in the updates have really unique interactions whether it be capturing points, marking villians, flying across the map, or sieging from far away and hope to see more of it.

When updating ashe, you chose to change her playstyle from avoiding autoattacks, into encouraging autoattacks. Why did riot decide to change her in this way? Her autoattacks before were very weak, dealing low damage, and having a long animation. Couldnt you have achieved a similar upgrade in power by increasing ashe's base attack damage, and improving her attack projectile speed, animation speed and range? In regards to her passive, her new passive is basically her old Q. Was their any different idea's that would have kept her Q the way it was, but still improve her passive?

What can we expect from the Taric update? Specifically, I'm wondering how the new Taric will contribute to a team. I vaguely recall reading another red post a while back (from Meddler I think, but I honestly can't find the post anymore) that mentioned Taric would be roughly the same as he is now, supporting his teammates with heals and such, but that felt so... boring isn't the correct term, but it just didn't feel very impactful. Like it's wasting his potential as a defensive support champion, as my hope for the Taric rework is one that would make him a very strong, defensive support so that role wasn't completely dominated by Thresh, Braum, and Leona (and the occasional Shen, Blitzcrank, and Nautilus).

Question: What do you think about auto-targeted spells on ranged champs like Annie/Sona/Fiddlesticks/Kayle/Nunu? From my perspective, I don't think Riot really endorses this play style anymore, and those that rely largely on these types of moves seem to fall out of concern from you guys, leaving them to pray for the game environment to favor them some way or another. Do you guys still think auto-targeted/low counter-play ranged moves have a place in this game? If not, do you plan on steadily reworking them out of the game? I mainly ask because those that have them tend to be the ones that have you guys looking THE MOST confused when it comes to properly balancing them.
new
> What do you think about auto-targeted spells on ranged champs like Annie/Sona/Fiddlesticks/Kayle/Nunu? I think these spells can be good additions to kits as long as they don't enable the champion's output to be 100% reliable. Currently, I don't think we utilize targeted spells as well as we could. > Do you guys still think auto-targeted/low counter-play ranged moves have a place in this game? As mentioned above, yep! > I mainly ask because those that have them tend to be the ones that have you guys looking THE MOST confused when it comes to properly balancing them. Characters with these types of spells tend to have the highest reliability profiles in the game. Being reliable at something, especially when it's like the "thing" you bring to your team, is a good thing. Being reliable at pretty much everything you do tends to result in flat gameplay. You either reliably win or reliably lose. I agree with your assessment of how we deal with these champions, however.

Fantastic. It's awesome to see how a player's plea was heard. Such effort shouldn't go unanswered. That being said, I was wondering how Red's go about answering player's questions. What I mean by this is: Do you answer questions based on your own know so, or do you consult with other Red's before answering? Like, I often feel that you guys want to answer questions, but are ultimately not allowed to. I understand that you can't answer questions about way in the future projects or things you'd prefer to keep secret to, I don't know, surprise us? But it often feels like some players posts go unnoticed or ignored, when I fear that in reality you guys simply can't answer it or are not allowed to, by maybe... higher ups? This may not be a gameplay question but I see it happen in gameplay more often.

Generally speaking, I tend to not want to post in threads that I don't feel like I'm an expert in. It's not fair to my coworkers if I'm spouting off assumptions that fall within their area of expertise, especially when those assumptions end up being misinformed. I don't really think that "higher ups" are a reason for not communicating with players, but as you've seen in this thread with stuff around mages and Taric, we often don't want to overcommunicate about things when we don't have solid plans for them. This has its ups and downs. On the one hand, this helps us to not make promises we end up not delivering on (AoShin, Magma Chamber, Replays, Yorick Rework, etc.). On the other hand, how can we get good feedback from you guys when we can't talk about stuff with you? I'm not exactly sure where the proper balance likes, but I personally feel like we're overly cautious, though I admittedly may not see anything close to the full picture on this subject.

Have you seen the way my champions release? I love you guys and appreciate the support, but I'm probably not the greatest demonstration of balanced champion releases.

You know...you were the people's champion, Repertoir. The hero we needed but not the one we deserved. You were the light in the darkness, that faint glimmer of hope that made people believe that Riot Games actually gives a damn about its community - and then you vanished. Rework after rework, once noble champions fell while other (arguably undeserving) champions rose to prominence. I'll pose my questions now in hopes that a hero will come once again to hold back the night: 1. Do you have any followup work planned for Skarner? His current win rate is one indicator that proves his most recent nerf was somewhat unjustified; I would like to hear your thoughts on Skarner in general as well in terms what you believe his current identity is and what he brings to a team composition that other champions do not. 2. Why does the Riot balance team allow certain - unhinged - champions (i.e. Ahri, Tahm Kench, Miss Fortune, etc.) to fly under the radar and avoid receiving nerfs for unreasonable periods of time while doling out unwarranted nerfs to other champions? This is in regards to recent nerfs to Hecarim and Karthus which I believe were unjustifiable, so I would highly appreciate it if you could speak about those decisions (I'm aware you weren't directly responsible for them or had much of a say in the matter but I would like to hear your opinion). 3. Are there any concrete, near-future (specifically within this year) plans to update "diving fighters" (i.e. Aatrox, Irelia, Xin Zhao) as they were dubbed by Meddler? He spoke briefly about this class of champions a few months ago, however, I can't seem to find the thread where he spoke about this particular class. Lastly, even if you don't answer any of my questions or even read most of my comment, I hope that this is the one part you see: I appreciate the work you've done at Riot Games. Please continue to be a hero for the community, a defender of the underutilized, yet deserving champions and a rectifier of injustice by keeping the disconcerting fringe elements of Riot Games (e.g. Jagg, CertainlyT, Stashu, and so many more) in check. You're the bae and many more people, including myself, hope that you'll continue to stand for what the players really want: a more fair and balanced game.
new
> Do you have any followup work planned for Skarner? Specifically for Skarner, overall I think he's in a pretty good spot on Live. I have some regrets more about how the process of his update went, but I think as far as what's on Live goes, players that like him (though I understand they are few) can play him with regular success. No extensive work is planned at the moment. I know this comes across as favoritism or something, but I really don't feel like that's the intention of the balance team. I've literally never heard someone on that team say something akin to "we shouldn't nerf X champion because I like it when they're strong." One thing I think we could do a lot better on (balance team included) is being more transparent about the reason we make certain changes. I know this is something we're working on improving, and I really do hope we get better at it, because frequently it seems sorely needed. > Are there any concrete, near-future (specifically within this year) plans to update "diving fighters" (i.e. Aatrox, Irelia, Xin Zhao) as they were dubbed by Meddler? Concretely, no, though I bet we'll figure out which category of champions we'd like to tackle next as soon as Mages production starts wrapping up.

For starters, I greatly appreciate this thread being made. Extreme kudos! Hopefully the other Rioters will try to chime in with threads like this once in a while so we can get answers for other areas too. As for my personal question; which champions are slated for the most extreme changes in the mage rework? I know with the ADC rework some got major changes while others just got little tweaks and I would like knowing which are which for the mages. Not everything is likely planned yet, but if you have any answers I'd be happy. :)

The immobile mage update i assume is to help give mages more individuality in what they bring to the team and game. Can you tell us, specific details or vague, which mages will be the major focus on, and who will end up being the Ezreals, Twitchs, and Varus's of this update (small gameplay changes rather than large)?

Hey Repertoir! First I want to say thanks for being an awesome rioter in general. When you drop by the boards, you always seem to put a lot of effort into answering question thoroughly and unbiased. I have a few random questions if you have the time. 1. Thoughts on Quinn's current state? Personally I feel you really hit the nail with the roaming ranger feel. However, I feel like picking her is a pretty big gamble as her role seems to be making surprise picks which are hard to plan on when selecting champs before the game. I could be wrong, it's just how seems to me at the moment. 2. What teams/departments do you work with during the different stages of champ updates? 3. Favorite rioters to work with and why? 4. Any tell you that you look like Keanu Reeves? Thanks. Raven
new
> Thoughts on Quinn's current state? I'm happy with how she's doing, and I hope that she can remain a relevant, unique pick for players to enjoy. It's nice when an update looks like it ends up having good sticking power when it's all said and done. Given that she's a marksman that's often played in non-bot lane roles, and that her ultimate isn't a combat spell, it may be somewhat inevitable that picking her feels like a gamble sometimes. > What teams/departments do you work with during the different stages of champ updates? Concept artists, VFX, SFX, animation, modelers, tech artists, Producers, Dev Managers, QA, writers, publishers, probably more I've missed. By the time a champion reaches Live, a lot of people have had big roles in making them awesome. > Favorite rioters to work with and why? It's hard to pick out specific Rioters to work with, but I am supremely thankful for the team I got to work on last year when we formed the design crew that ended up doing Juggernauts and Marksmen. We called it the "Roster Team," and its original team members were Ezreal, CertainlyT, Statikk, and myself. I was somewhat of an afterthought as a designer on this team, but being able to work with those guys so closely forced me to learn a lot really fast. I don't think I've ever been on a team here that challenged me as hard to take it to the next level as those guys did, and it really helped. Also, big shoutout to Scruffy. I wouldn't be a Game Designer if it weren't for him. > Any tell you that you look like Keanu Reeves? That's literally the first time I've ever heard that.

This is more of a suggestion than a question, but when Ashe's passive was changed, unless I'm just not paying careful attention and it's there: is it possible for Ashe's targets to have an 'icy' aura/outline to them whenever she crits them for doubled slow modifier? Much like Sejuani's slows coating enemies in an icy appearance. It's sometimes hard for me to tell whenever I get the slow off, especially when Volley shows critical numbers.
new
> is it possible for Ashe's targets to have an 'icy' aura/outline to them whenever she crits them for doubled slow modifier? It would be a nice touch to add if possible. We're leaning only on the crit text numbers at the moment. Volley's critical numbers also result in the greater slow as well, for what it's worth.

Less of a question more of hype staller. I love champion reveals, when you look through the video previews of their abilities and you see an ability never before done in league that makes your jaw drop, stuff like bards journey and ult, and azir tower passive come to mind. Thanks for always floating around the boards repertoir Not really questions but Nidalee Champ Update/Rework - Gj, even if I hate both cancer cats I like what you did to her visually and jungle-wise. Ryze - GJ? Hard to change ryze into something that isnt a broken piece of shit without the community backlash. He is still a broken piece of shit, but he is less frustrating in lane. Thanks Ashe - You did good, just not a lot. Ashe didnt really change all that much TBH, but she has a unique space. Skarner - Fantastic Job, after the initial hotfix Skarner has been my main having barely touched him before just because he never felt strong. Garen - Good job, garen is now a tanky wrecker of shits. Nuff said really. Quinn - Love it, do me a solid and push for her to be more of a jungle marksman. Kogmaw - I like the alternative build paths im seeing, but I don't think the final result is true to his original tank melter turret status. The On-Hit builds im seeing tend to wreck squishies and not do much to tanks thanks to thornmail basically fucking his shit in. Taric - I'm trusting you to keep him fabulous Mages - uhhh Good Luck? Pls make anivia less aids (surprising and stupidly high burst and consistent damage + Utility) Questions Are you guys working on rengar again? Its kinda dumb that his counterplay as a squishy is have your team pink ward EVERYTHING as well as build Steraks + HP/Armor item so you can not get 1-2 shot Mages - Are you assigned to any specific champions yet? Will there be any not so immobile mages getting touched up on also because taking the juggernaut/marksman updates as references item pools got reworked in addition to the general class of champs and both times bruisers/dive fighters got effected in the crossfire. The general AP class of champs almost always will build the same items and it will be annoying for mobile AP champs to get hit by unwanted changes unless they are looking into being reworked to fit into the immobile grouping.

Will tarics damage and passive still scale with armour post rework?
new
> Will tarics damage and passive still scale with armour post rework? That's currently the plan.
How satisfied are you with Skarner's rework? Even if he's currently seen as balanced, but the rework didn't accomplish what its intended goal was which was to make Skarner a neutral objective controller, and things like making his ult scale with AD has done nothing to change his build path either, with Skarner's building very little AD. Are there any plans to either change his kit to be more suited for objective control or to refocus it back to its original function of a catcher style kit?
new
> How satisfied are you with Skarner's rework? Mostly satisfied with how the gameplay has turned out, though I think the execution of the passive could have been better. > Hey, how you doing? First off, you're doing a great job, keep it up, but there was one thing that I wanted ask real quick. You worked on Garen's mini rework, what did you think is/was Garen's core identity? I think Garen's a pretty quintessential Juggernaut. He's a super tanky guy that wants to deliver justice in close combat, and he wants to spin. I think we delivered well on those things, but I know there's a fair amount of sentiment out there that he should have been focused more as a tank and less as a damage dealer, which I can understand.

I've never been a fan of Ryze building damage from mana on principle, but I understand that a good number of players are attached to these kinds of thematic item buys. Personally, I think it's just a shallow novelty for the sake of novelty which forces the champion to be balanced around confounding rules. On the other hand, I do feel that clarity of the effect of items on Ryze is not actually much of a big deal (compared to, say, most AD/AP hybrid champions) since mana in itself as a stat tends to be tied to tankiness. What are your insights on Ryze's stat conversion? Do you think it allows for healthy definition of the champion? Does he cause much frustration in your internal conversations about mana?
new
> What are your insights on Ryze's stat conversion? Do you think it allows for healthy definition of the champion? Does he cause much frustration in your internal conversations about mana? I think Ryze's relationship with Mana is mostly a good one. It lets him build up a ton of resources that he can go and dump out, and it makes his builds feel really cool and unique, though some of that is likely novelty, as you've pointed out. That said, I went pretty far out of my way to make Frozen Heart a less attractive option for him, so there are consequences to this type of thing. If we had more robust Mana itemization, Ryze would benefit greatly, though he might just break it as well.

There are numerous posts on the Gameplay section with thousands of upvotes about changes to make the game better, yet no riot employee has responded, on the flip side, there are others with numerous upvotes about praising Riot and how they handle things and an employee always comes around and thanks them back. Why do your colleagues ignore these posts?

> Why do your colleagues ignore these posts? I do think that's generalizing a bit, but even as someone that tries to comb through posts and give meaningful responses every now and again, it's easy to feel like it's not making a difference, and that you'd have to repeat yourself constantly to give players the attention/conversation they're seeking. There are _lots_ of posts, and relatively few of us. It's difficult to get to them, but it's entirely understandable that it's frustrating to players when we don't. I think it's a problem more with the nature of Boards or the expectations we've set for how things work here than it is us wanting to dodge the difficult issues. At least I hope it is?

When you say mage champion updates... Would Veigar happen to be getting a full scale/large scale/anything-that-makes-him-more-fun update any time soon? At the moment he just seems so... outdated. I'd say that everything except his lore, general style, and core functions needs to be changed. His animations, model, particle effects, balance, abilities, etc. are all just really really outdated. **Model/Animations/Etc:** His model is in sore need of a complete remake from scratch. With Riot going back through all of the yordles and really thinking about who they are, and who they're supposed to be, I feel Veigar almost seems like he speaks for himself as the next candidate for a model rework. Not just that, but he has little to no animation qualities that express his personality or attitude. They need to be more like FB Veigar, who's actions really show off him as his own being. **Playstyle/Abilities:** The core idea around Veigar being the burst mage of burst mages is really awesome, however in this day and age, the way it's integrated is just plain outdated. His kit is insanely simple and bland in the fact that you just throw everything you have at the enemy and run away. I know Riot took a throw at giving him a rework to change that maybe just a bit, but all they really did was nerf his E any compensate by giving him a load of lazy buffs and calling it good. The side effect of doing this was just worsening a problem he already was bordering on. He's just not fun anymore, to be honest. I can play a single game and maybe have a bit of fun nuking people, but after that I can't play him for another few days at least. Actually now that I think of it, I think all of that was pointless in asking IF he was undergoing a rework already, but I guess my point stands that he is in sore need of one.
new
> Would Veigar happen to be getting a full scale/large scale/anything-that-makes-him-more-fun update any time soon? He was definitely a name that came up when it came to picking champions to work on for the upcoming mage updates, but there are quite a few champions that need the whole revamp much more than him (Yorick, Urgot, etc.)
Are you going to make more ways to combat assassins mid? Being forced to buy zhonya's just because the enemy is a zed is not healthy counterplay. Or perhaps a way to make laning against a yasuo less annoying? In earlier posts it has been discussed that there will be new mechanics to old immobile mages, I highly, HIGHLY suggest that these include ways to punish these oppressive, and extremely obnoxious, champions.
new
> Are you going to make more ways to combat assassins mid? One thing we've talked about is giving some of these more immobile guys inherent defensive bonuses that help them to offset some of the nature of them being immobile. Ideally, this would let us make them not quite so vulnerable, but also not have to burst quite so hard to function.

Regarding Taric, don't make him yet another skillshot-based champ. We have enough of those, and we all know Riot has issues with lag. You need to leave some champs that can be played when your servers are suffering though 300 ms lag.

Do you think that making a non-humanoid champion, IE: Skarner, made it more difficult and clunky to find a skill set that matched his design that would also be balanced out? Because it kind of seems like you have struggled a lot with non-humanoid champions since Skarner is, more or less, the only one. In light of this we have encountered multiple updates and small remakes of his abilities that were to match his design, and it kind of hit the spot, design wise, being the territorial crystal vanguard he was supposed to be, protecting his "mini-dominion areas" as a perfect description of Skarner and his background lore, but I still feel like he is lacking something in terms of consistency and the ability to pick him competitively (or at all). Don´t get me wrong, I think you have done a wonderful job on him, I enjoy his overall design and skillset, but it feels like playing a clunky, lagged out blockbuster game with few options, it just won´t work out the way you might have intended to(?) And is this why the game design of the champions in League are more or less similar in terms of the typical human/humanoid look on the champions? Take Omen for example, the champion who got cancelled because, and this is speculative from my side, you had immense issues with coming up with a skillset that matched his design? Is it just easier for you to go with the same type of base on the champion modeling?
new
> Do you think that making a non-humanoid champion, IE: Skarner, made it more difficult and clunky to find a skill set that matched his design that would also be balanced out? It's possible it's related, but I've never thought of it that way. This really seems to me like we just never delivered on Skarner like we could have for reasons that are independent of him being a non-humanoid character.

What is your opinion on champions with combos that are nearly instant/have stunlock in them? I'm talking {{champion:91}} {{champion:64}} {{champion:92}} {{champion:107}} {{champion:58}} . Will they stay the same for forseeable future? Will we get some sort of combo breaker item/summoner spell(blitz-like mini silence? 0.5-1 sec of cc immunity?). I mean they are super oppressive now on high levels of play especially after the snowball. You give them 1 kill and suddenly you are not safe even under the turret and your only hope is to group(something that is not so easy to call in soloqueue).

This sounds like an issue related more to snowball than any single type of stun-combo playstyle. Combo-based characters can still have meaningful counterplay as long as their combo isn't reliably "go in, combo without chance of retaliation, go out." Admittedly, some of the champions you brought up do have some of that to them.

Are you fully aware that with the current state of midlane, if you fuck up the Mage Champion Update you're going to get toxic riots and drops in playercount? P.S. If you fuck it up, you're **_going_** to have to feel sorry for once, or revert changes. We can take the removal of Mana pots and green wards. We can take AP items being nerfed and/or increased in price. Hell, we can take that one time you made Yasuo stay in the top 5 most played champs for a solid 2 weeks because you made Warlord's Bloodlust stupidly overpowered. But if you continue to skewer what's left of AP midlane, then you may kindly go drink a gallon of Singed's poison.

I hate it that I'm always late to these sorts of discussions... Anyhow, there are two matters that I'd appreciate a response from Riot on. 1. Why exactly is it that Taric needed a rework? Yes, the community said it was needed, but that's a good enough reason. There are 120+ champions to chose from. If players don't like Taric, then they just... shouldn't play Taric, not ask him to be reworked. I'm never going to play Zed or LeBlanc--they just don't appeal to me--but that doesn't mean they need reworks. There were no glaring problems with his gameplay, either, and I've had trouble getting an answer on exactly what parts of Taric's kit were considered unhealthy. Obviously, his lore needed to be retconned, his visuals needed to updated (aside from the splash art, IMO. It was gorgeous), and his VO needed to be expanded, but I still don't understand: why touch his kit? 2. Regarding Skarner: one of the first patch notes I remember reading was 4.10, when Skarner was reworked. In it was stated that Skarner's gameplay identity revolved around his "stickiness". Part of being "sticky" is single-target crowd-control, but the other half is mobility. Then comes the Juggernaut update fifteen months later. In it, Skarner is lumped in with the likes of Nasus, Darius, and Garen as being an "powerful, durable, **immobile**, and melee". The rework gave a flat nerf to his mobility and also discouraged extended chases by tying him to his crystals. Riot did not enhance Skarner's gameplay identity; they changed it from stickiness to jungle-based zone-control. This is what concerns me most about champion updates: they have an unfortunate tendency to redefine their champion's gameplay identity rather than clarify their existing one. I appreciate the work that Riot employees such as yourself put into refining the game, but I believe that Riot should be more discerning about which champions they rework and to what extent they rework them. Even if the end product is cool and perceived to be more professionally viable, reworking champions to a greater extent than they need to be feels extremely unrewarding to the players who have invested hundreds of hours into those champions. It's hard to stay loyal to a game when everything that you know and love about it changes beneath your feet.
new
> why touch Taric's kit? The main issues that make Taric a good candidate for a kit update specifically are: * His kit's success is driven heavily by statistical advantages that often go unnoticed/unappreciated * His kit's reliability profile is far too high, especially given its stat-driven nature as described above. Results in more binary gameplay. > This is what concerns me most about champion updates: they have an unfortunate tendency to redefine their champion's gameplay identity rather than clarify their existing one. This is a fair criticism, and one that we're focusing on trying to strike a better balance on in the future.

> I'm a swain main and I read earlier that you think his kit is a mess... what do you think is wrong with it and what do you want swain to be? I play him as a mid lane bruiser not as a glass cannon like most... There are no immediate plans to work on Swain, but the reason I made that comment is that his gameplay can mostly be boiled down to "double dot someone and walk toward them." That's not necessarily the worst thing in the world, and there is some positional gameplay that Swain has to offer, but combined with a high-uptime ult that is very much "you either can deal with me or you can't," his gameplay can be pretty flat. Perhaps most importantly, the guy is supposed to be the Master Tactician, and he doesn't really seem to live up to that. That's just my opinion. I wouldn't say that's necessarily representative of all of Riot or anything.

Meddler talked a bit about Aatrox some times ago but I would like to know what YOU think about him and heavy sustain champions ({{champion:8}} being the only other one I can think about). > Good idea but poorly implemented ? Impossible to have them in a "balanced state" (either too weak when facing heavy damages or too oppressive when ahead) ? Etc. Healing feels pretty hard to get right in the game right now. I don't think it's impossible, and it's something I'm trying to get right on Taric at the moment. As to the damage-oriented ones, my experience is that sustain is mostly more tolerable when it's gated pretty heavily in the early game, especially if the champion in question is intended to be a laner. Maybe modeling the way sustain scales similarly to how Lifesteal works would help in this, where it's less noticeable in the early game, but quite pronounced in the later stages.
Hey, first of all I would like to thank you for all your great work. The juggernaught change gave light and change on the rift by making these champions unique. To me, a great start on Vladimir would be really a new and improved E, even one that's in the spirit of the existing one. I know his Q is the low counterplay spam ability in lane, but I think it's iconic of him, and if he had an E that was a little more engaging, especially in the lane phase, it would go a long way to making his early game more dynamic.

Do you think that, in the future, Mana-based itemization will move more towards "more mana, less regen"? From my experience in games (which is quite a bit) it tends to be a more..."feels good" way to balance the costs of spells. When Mana Regen is the main mechanism that contributes to how gated you are (as it usually is in League), it's very easy for it to be polarized, where it's always either "not enough regen, can't do anything" or "enough regen, do whatever I want". Additionally, this system makes any kind of adjustment to mana costs **_extremely_** volatile, because even small number tweaks can be devastating to the character's efficiency, a phenomena that tends to not be fun for either designers or the players. Larger mana pools on the other hand are similarly as gating, but not so constrictive about doing so. It creates a dynamic where you have X pool of resource available to you, and if conservative it'll stay there, but if needed you can dig into it. However, if you go too crazy, you might find yourself out, and you best hope that the reason you're dry was worth it. This back and forth encourages one to be intelligent with mana use without it feeling like it's too easy to go dry if you're pressured into acting. This I think is one of the biggest complaints many have with mana in League. Additionally, there's also the quirk that bigger mana pool=more time for Mana Regen to do its job before you're completely spent. If it physically takes longer to dig through your pool, there's going to be more time for regen to extend your effective "lifetime", so to speak. This means that you can safely lower overall regen or increase costs and not cause such drastic shifts in how many spells a player _feels_ like they can use. That and, let's be real. Having a gigantic freakin mana bar feels _awesome._ I understand that this would probably be a rather large scope affair (that and it's kind of scary considering how many champions scale off mana currently, naturally or artificially such as through Seraph's/Muramana), but I do feel it'd be something that would lessen a lot of the issues players currently have about the mana system, and be more fun as a whole for everybody. Thanks in advance!
new
> Do you think that, in the future, Mana-based itemization will move more towards "more mana, less regen"? This is an approach we've been talking about a fair amount when it comes to mage items, so I hope something comes of it. As you mentioned, it does feel really awesome to have a huge mana bar. It's also a space I'm looking into for balancing Taric for his release, since healers that regen their mana all lane aren't much fun to play against.

Some of the newer champions are starting to feel like they're narrating the game when you're playing them, which is all good and well, but I don't think it's the route we're choosing for Taric.

I was playing Yasuo, and Shaco had this skill where he blinked out of existence into a missile and reappeared where it ended. > Why do think Swain is a bad champion? He's got some cool elements to him, and the promise of Master Tactician is cool, but I think the execution is really poor, hence the "mess" comment.
You mentioned earlier that you feel bad for all the people who dislike Quinn after the rework and I'm one of those people. I'm not trying to insult you or make you feel bad, I just want to know why her kit came out the way it did. Prior to champion mastery I played A LOT OF QUINN like pretty much only her. After champion mastery I got 80k on her. She was my favorite champion. I have a poster of her even. I loved her play style and honestly I felt like one of the far better Quinn's (not to brag) since everyone just couldn't play that champion properly as an adc and had to go for the top lane cheese where it was a pretty much free lane. I loved how she could dive turrets with her ult and just blow people up really like an assassin in some scenarios if they were alone and it was such a fun playstyle. But, with the rework pretty much making her ult a gap closer/teemo speed move with a channel time, you can't do that anymore. You can't go melee and burst people with your e q execute. You can't buy hydra if you just feel like messing around. You just removed a lot of the actually mechanics of playing the champ since the rest of her kit is the same except you amped up damage and made silly things like her q pseudo blind and applying passive and what not. Peoples complaint about Quinn was she couldn't teamfight but I never believed this was true. I think she'd teamfight fine if you knew how to play adc. Even in a teamfight, in the right position, you can try to assassinate someone if they split off a bit from the team so her ult was never useless either. While I never agreed with the complaints, if anything, you made her teamfighting worse by completely taking away her ultimate. It just seems like a pointless rework. Make the most fun part of the champion completely gone then buff the rest of her kit to be absolutely ridiculous. Really, it is absolutely silly that she has a nocturne ultimate for a skill shot. You didn't fix anything, you just amped up her damage and made her less fun to play and that makes me really sad. I just want to know, what in your opinion did you actually fix about Quinn. Because all I see is big damage buffs on her basic kit which could have been done without absolutely ruining her ultimate.
new
> I just want to know, what in your opinion did you actually fix about Quinn. Because all I see is big damage buffs on her basic kit which could have been done without absolutely ruining her ultimate. I think her ultimate puts her in a unique space unoccupied by pretty much any champion in the game. Before the update, Quinn was much more feast or famine in that she mostly relied on dominating her lane opponent in order to be relevant in the later stages of the game. Secondarily, I think the changes to her Q provide higher counterplay to the spell while keeping it powerful and relevant throughout the game.

I suppose my question is as much for personal curiosity as anything else. What is Riot's internal testing like? A lot of times, when people complain about some balance change (or lack thereof), the explanation begins with "internal testing showed that..." To use an example close to my heart, CertainlyT justified lowering Mordekaiser's movement speed because players in internal testing were building multiple ms items on him and he got too fast. I think a lot of the frustration and sense of obscurity surrounding balance decisions is because internal testing is basically a black box. Who's involved in it? Is it just Rioters playing games against each other over and over? Are pro players involved? Is it game testers hired from outside for short term periods, or is there a "stable" of testers who have worked on League for a long time? What are the actual mechanics of testing? Is it just a bunch of norms, over and over? Is it special maps or game modes designed for testing? How long/how many times is a given change usually tested? Thanks for any information you can provide.

Is it just a bunch of norms, over and over? Is it special maps or game modes designed for testing? How long/how many times is a given change usually tested? There are lots of things that go into testing stuff here. I am a part of two planned playtests every day, playing against other designers and QA with upcoming content, but we also now have a really good team of internal testers nowadays. That team is made up of high level players (Diamond2-Challenger) that spend a good share of their day testing upcoming content and letting plebs like me know when stuff isn't playing out like I intended it to or simply that a champion in testing is broken op. Most of the testing comes in two forms: 5v5 SR games, and "lane tests," where we take a new champion and pit it up against a stable pick (Illaoi had a lot of these against Renekton, Riven, Gnar, etc.). If there's a new map or mode in testing, that team will also test these. As far as how long or how many times changes are tested, it varies by project, but for a bigger project like Taric, I wouldn't be surprised if his number of playtests exceed 250 by the time he releases, from his very first playtest to the ones on the kit today. One interesting tidbit is that I actually started at Riot 4+ years ago as a full time playtester on a team very similar to (though less skilled than) the one we have today. If you're interested in more about how testing goes, Riot Afic would probably be able to give more detail than I

> You keep mentioning you are embarrassed about the current state of rengar. Would you mind going into detail about it? I'd love to know why you think rengar is in a bad spot. There's a lot to Rengar that could be so much cooler, especially given how awesome his backstory and thematic are, and how much potential rests in his Ferocity system. Instead, he's currently balanced around trying to find a way to get ahead (which isn't a guaranteed thing) and then finding ways to gib people. I think the comment I made about Rengar came off more harshly than I intended (wording was poor, admittedly), because I really like Rengar overall. That said, when speaking from a Game Health perspective specifically, which is what the original question was, I stand by what I said.

RiotRepertoir I read some of the threads and saw your reply about Quinn and it having destroyed the champion for some players. I am the other side of that coin. Prior to her rework I was a fan of Quinn and had ~20k mastery points (and before mastery system I'm guessing between 30-50 games). Since her rework I've gotten up to ~130k mastery points, playing 99.5% of the time in the mid lane. Her rework took a champion that I liked, in my top 10, and turned her into my favourite champion, by a large large margin. Obviously her old ulti was pretty cool, but it was a shadow of this new one. But really what made her more playable for me was adding Harrier procs when you land Q. That just took her from "a ranged champ who is good in lane against melees and strong 1v1 versus ADC" to a champ that actually fight in a team fight. Prior to her rework I had stopped playing her because she was just junk in top lane except against a few melees. Now she's good against anything (probably still sucks vs a tank) Her rework was a thing of greatness. Only thing I would like changed is for you to include a ghostblade in her recommended items, and if possible (might not be) make it appear as an option to take Phantom dancer instead of static shiv for upgrading your zeal. Unless you are 100% going to split push a lot the static shiv isn't as good as PD is, that move speed boost and damage bleed passive are the best, as well as moving through units. Because she's a mid lane AD assassin now

Hello, I really hope I'm not too late to be noticed, I have just a few questions. Can you give us a list of what mages will be looked at? Are Sona and Soraka "Immobile mages" ? Do you think Sona will be nerfed again? I really hope she can be balanced well enough and perhaps introduced into a solo lane intentionally, in my experience solo lane Sona players are very passionate as off-meta players in comparison to other off-meta picks, so I hope that will be taken into some consideration. Thank you for the post RiotRepertoir.

Don't really have a ton of insight into Gragas' current state, but I know he always has to be balanced around a lower solo queue power level due to his frequent dominance in pro play.

I have a question that will not be answered but has to be asked. Why does riot seldom/never un nerf. There has been plenty of examples where a champ becomes op /viable because of one item "cinder hulk" being my best example. Many champs got small nerfs because of it. Then the item is nerfed but those of champs remain nerfed. Leading to them becoming un viable or worst.
new
> I have a question that will not be answered but has to be asked. Why does riot seldom/never un nerf. As far as why we tend to not to strict reverts, I don't think there's any one rule for/against it that I know of. That said, we try to make changes that are directionally sound for champions/items/masteries when we make them, so that even if other factors that contribute to their balance change, we're happy with the decision in the long run. Sejuani and Cinderhulk is a pretty common case people talk about here, but at no point do I think either of them was really _unacceptably_ weak, and I think there are similar things going on with Swain and DFT right now. Also, I do think that it's easy for players to feel like their champion has been overnerfed. I've historically felt this way about champions I played as well. If you imagine all the various power levels that champions could fall at as a spectrum, it seems reasonable to say there's a segment of that spectrum that could be considered _allowable_ power levels. As someone who has felt this way in the past about certain champions, I think it's easy for players to be biased into thinking certain champions power should rest at the upper end of that allowable part, while at the same time being perfectly comfortable with other champions they are less attached to resting at the middle or lower end.

I have several questions about Taric. 1. Is Taric still going to be fabulous? I mean will his voice still be sexy and breathy, enough to make people hard as gems? 2. Will the splash need to be changed? Even though it's not as high quality as current splash arts, I feel like it's the absolute best out of the older ones. If it won't be accurate any more, I understand. 3. Will we be able to see Taric Pentakills again? 4. Possibly the most important question: Are you looking to bring champions _away_ from having one or the other defense stat essential to their build? For champions like Taric, Rammus, and Galio there's a disadvantage to having enemies that don't deal the type of damage that their kit scales with the defense of. Are you going to even it out and make it less of a hindrance to purchase the right defense for the opponent?

Are you going to even it out and make it less of a hindrance to purchase the right defense for the opponent? Answering this question since it's one I've seen less of, and I think the others have mostly been answered. Generally speaking, we should avoid making either Armor or Magic Resist supremely more powerful on champions when compared to the other stat, _unless it is a very specific intended strength/weakness_. Taric falls into this category, where being an exceptionally good pick against physical damage teams is very much an intended strength. I intend on maintaining some of that in his upcoming update.

Hi! I don't know if this is still going on but i'd like to ask about a particular champion. I know you already mentioned that no specific champions will revealed from the Mage Update but... How do you feel about Anivias Passive? Am i the only one who thinks that it's just too weak in many situations in the game? I mean also losing resistences while in Egg form makes it even harder to survive. Don't get me wrong about the next question. I like the champ and also the skills but they kind of feel a bit boring after some time.. Will there maybe be some work on her to make her a more interesting champ? I mean she is a bird and literally all she is doing is throwing stuff ok and creating a wall/blizzard.. But for birds there are so many other options. Thanks for reading these and maybe commenting i'd be really glad to see a reply.{{champion:34}}

> How do you feel about Anivias Passive? Am i the only one who thinks that it's just too weak in many situations in the game? I mean also losing resistences while in Egg form makes it even harder to survive. Though I understand where you're coming from, I actually think Anivia's passive is actually in a pretty good spot. The fact that it can fail makes it really awesome when it works, and provides some really cool tension in a lot of cases. Another thing to consider is that the power budget that would have to go into her passive would be much higher if it was much more resilient, and that would have to come from somewhere, as she's not a low performer as far as her balance state goes. > Don't get me wrong about the next question. We would probably do Ice Bird different today if it was a new champion, but I actually think Anivia's kit has stood up well against the tests of time. It's arguably lost some of its luster as mobility increases, but Crystallize (W) is still very, very powerful, for example.

How do you feel about the weakness of towers leading players to start doing this "open mid" thing? When even one person doesn't show up to protect a 5 man push, it's nearly impossible to stop. It's likely a bannable offense, but towers still feel like wet pieces of paper.

Is the idea behind juggernauts that they are supposed to be able to 100 to 0 anything that isnt fast enough to get away from them? It's a serious question, because I cant figure out what their role is meant to be other than a thing you have to stay away from or die. The supposed counterplay behind juggernauts is their immobility. Supposedly they get a ton of damage and a ton of tankiness in return. Problem is, this creates a situation where the juggernaut can get away with plenty of mistakes due to tankiness and built in sustain, but their opponents are punished severely for a single slip up. One can spend 15 minutes kiting and poking a Garen, baiting out his cooldowns and stopping his passive, but then make a single mistake, maybe use a cooldown at a bad time, and be taken from 100 to 0 by his Q-E-R. Same is true of Darius and Illaoi. I really want to now if this was the idea behind their design.
new
> Is the idea behind juggernauts that they are supposed to be able to 100 to 0 anything that isnt fast enough to get away from them? In the late game especially, yes, though the 100-0 should be over a few seconds, and not instantly. Juggernauts were intended to be a type of carry that often required a lot of help from allies to damage the right targets, and likewise, they were intended to require a group effort to take down, especially in the late game (again).

Back in pbe cycle 5.16, there was a lot of discussion about Syndra buffs for her passive to mean more. This is august 2015. Then everything was reverted back on the PBE because there "wasnt enough time to wrap it up", but now there's this huge immobile mages rework. Has her work been postponed to just be released on this new patch? Secondly, in terms of the immobile mages work, the juggernauts saw 4 (and Fiora and GP reworked nearby) toplaners get some TLC, and the ADC rework saw 6 more adcs get kit overhauls. How large is the immobile mage rework, both in quantity of champions and of the level of skill/kit reworks. I assume as always riot want these champions to keep their "feel", and does that mean they will all stay immobile mages, just with more ability to defend for themselves or to all in knowing they will die afterwards?

Number of champions is not yet determined, but as far as the level of change in a single kit goes, our mindset is generally that there is one highlighted change (usually in the form of a new skill) to the champion, with other small changes to the existing kit to support it.

What should we expect from Taric visually? I assume you're not supposed to say too much, but this is kind of what I'm mostly worried about. Especially since I've seen you use the word "Juggernaut" to describe him. One thing I keep end up being afraid of is Taric ending up with another 8-foot tall strongman. Which, we have more than enough of. Garen, Braum, Sion, Darius, Rengar, (Didn't even notice how many there were till now this is actually super nuts) etc. The *only* other character we have who kinda fits Taric's overall bodytype (In that they appear physically strong, but not a noodleman i.e. Varus, Yasuo) Is Jayce, and lets be honest here, Jayce is lame. I'm not expecting concept art, or splashes, but I'd love to know the direction he was headed in that regard, just to put some fears to rest. I'm not entirely sure if I'm describing myself as well as I'm trying, so this is pretty much what I mean - More similar to this, http://apollo-na-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1422218618761/TaricConceptArt.png or this? http://apollo-na-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1437964352/taric_visual_update_by_fch3ck-d8ajj6g.jpg Still waiting on Debonair Quinn btw, where Valor is a penguin that she stands on, and slides around the map on.
new
> One thing I keep end up being afraid of is Taric ending up with another 8-foot tall strongman. This isn't really what we're aiming for. Any of his 'Juggernaut' elements are related to gameplay more than anything else, similar to how he is on Live, where he's a tanky melee guy that does a lot better if he can manage to stick on a guy.

**How come you keep ignoring every single one of my questions regarding Cassiopeia?** I realize that you're looking into her for the mage-update but **Meddler promised some changes for her at the start of season 6** and we still got nothing for her on the PBE. She's in a very bad spot right now when it comes to her performance. She struggles to reach lategame in the League of 25 Minute Games and once she hits that cap **she still struggles to even scratch a 50% winrate after 40 minutes.** Just looking at the endgame results will tell you how inferior her sustain and damage-output are compared to actual marksmen. And don't get me started on **assassins or ap supports like Zyra or Brand who deal TWICE as much damage as her** while remaining strong throughout the game, that's simply sad. This isn't solely an issue of identity, this is an issue of viability. **If you expect anyone to continue playing this champion, you need to buff her as soon as possible.** [Cassiopeia's current lategame is a massive disappointment and the result of neverending nerfs that went way overboard.](http://imgur.com/oRdEwtB) Infact she gets even worse the longer a game goes on since everyone will be able of oneshotting you anyway. **There isn't a single phase in the game where she feels strong, she just feels weak and neutered.**

I'm not on the team that works on it, so I can't really speak to the balance state of the champion, or what the particular reasons are for why she is balanced the way she is at the moment. As a member of the update team, and as someone that comes here and reads Cass threads that pop up every now and again, all I can really say is that I'm aware of the identity crisis stuff she's got going on, and that if we ever looked at her again from a 'small update' perspective, that is where I personally would start. There are a lot of champions that could use stuff in this regard, however, so no promises.

When will see the updates for Ryze? Will it be along with the Mage update or in next few patches?
new
> When will see the updates for Ryze? Will it be along with the Mage update or in next few patches? Not really sure we have a specific timeline on Ryze. ricklessabandon was talking to me about some change opportunities here. I'll have to follow up and see if there are any plans for Ryze in the short term.
1. Do you feel like Ryze isn't a champion for newbies anymore? His kit is still simple, but his passive really messes up things and raises his skill floor too much (because he's supposed to be weak if you can't manage your passive correctly). 2. Regarding new players, have you considered lowering to 450 IP the price of some champions that are *really good* for newbies? Champions like Sona or Darius are really newbie-friendly, but they cost too much for new players. 3. With the immobile champion update, have you considered adding anti-mobility tools to some of them (at least, the most vulnerable ones)? Things like Anivia's wall blocking dashes. Not asking any specifics, just if you considered these kind of abilities. 4. Do you think mage-y champions have enough item diversity? I think we need more AP items. Also, what about adding "fun" support items, like the one from the Market Brawl that let you disguise as a friendly champion. (4.1) What do you think about Rabadon? (No insight here, just an opinion). I think it limits too much the space design for AP, as they should be less about raw stats and more about DotA-ish items with powerful passive/actives (not as powerful as Blink Dagger, but far more impactful than, let's say, Statikk or Bloodthirster's passives) 5. Will we ever see a champion that can do something similar to good old AP yi (the one with AP ratio on his Q)? I know it was really toxic, but I think its gameplay was funny and I'd like to see a champion with a similar but healthier playstyle. Thank you for your time (if you read this, I hope my comment wasn't *that* long). I have to say you are doing an amazing job at this game ^^

> Do you feel like Ryze isn't a champion for newbies anymore? Yeah, I'd say he's far too difficult for newer players at this point. > Regarding new players, have you considered lowering to 450 IP the price of some champions that are really good for newbies? Not really something I have control over or insight into, sorry. > With the immobile champion update, have you considered adding anti-mobility tools to some of them (at least, the most vulnerable ones)? Yes, but we are trying to do it in ways that aren't simply "stop dash in progress." Hopefully we make some good progress in this regard. > Do you think mage-y champions have enough item diversity? I think item diversity is pretty good for mages, strictly as far as options go before considering things like gold and slot efficiency, which I haven't personally put a ton of thought into yet. As far as Deathcap goes, I can see a case being made that it limits design space and build diversity. > Will we ever see a champion that can do something similar to good old AP yi (the one with AP ratio on his Q)? I know it was really toxic, but I think its gameplay was funny and I'd like to see a champion with a similar but healthier playstyle. I feel like Katarina is still kinda that champion, unless you're referring more to the healing aspects of old AP Yi.

Do you ever consider putting back the silly into certain champs. Like the old AP Miss Fortune? Or the old ADC Taric? That's one thing I miss about all the reworked champs and "balanced" champs. The ability to play them the opposite of what their intended for. I know Rito is trying their best to make the game a balanced and decisive game, but I play this for the fun of it, not for the refinement.
new
> Do you ever consider putting back the silly into certain champs. Like the old AP Miss Fortune? Or the old ADC Taric? I think about things like that sometimes, and try to do it where possible, but it's always important to make sure to do it in a way that doesn't compromise the balance of the champion. Using this example, AP Support Miss Fortune is actually somewhat a thing at the moment, so you can see how buffing fun off builds might inadvertently cause issues.

+1 Thank you for being part of the community. Whether a MOBA or RPG; games that allow players choice in build and team contribution, given a statically designed role and (heroic) character; there always comes a time in the progression of changes for newness sake that things feel less well formed, more chaotic or disproportionate. It seems, at these times, that the balance teams don't play the game enough, or with that same degree of passion on a per character or per scenario basis as the player base. I wonder what gauges you use at your design level to assist with making the best choices for change. Also, has there been discussion about paying professional gamers in a standard yearly wage job to play in competition amongst each other on a daily basis, using random rotations of team compositions (like in ARAM), so that a current and relevant database may be created to assist with balancing?

> Also, has there been discussion about paying professional gamers in a standard yearly wage job to play in competition amongst each other on a daily basis, using random rotations of team compositions (like in ARAM), so that a current and relevant database may be created to assist with balancing? We actually have a full-time team comprised of high Diamond to Challenger level players that spend most of the day playing upcoming content and giving us advice on how to hit our goals on it. These guys are really dedicated, too. Currently, they spend all day at work playing/testing 6.01 League of Legends internally, and then all night playing 5.24 League of Legends on the Live environment. Riot Afic leads up that team. Love this just spent hours reading. If you are still answering... Can you help me with understanding in how to play against a Garen? It seems to me (in my experience) that Garen can build tank yet still end with the most damage on the team. When in team fights my teams seem to be forced to attempt to use abilities to try to kill him before he gets to carries or use all CC to try to kite, yet Garen can tank all abilities and still have half health to kill carries or simply back off for a minute and come back with full health without having to return to base (with SV, and Warmogs). Do you think he is balanced or maybe a bit too strong? Also, really enjoy playing Quinn and Skarner. Good work! Looking forward to new Taric (hope he feels like a Paladin as thats how I always thought of him). Not sure if you are able to speak on LCS as an employee or if you even follow it. But if you can/do, any predictions for spring!? Thanks again for doing this board. Edit: Any plans for Yorick? (:

Garen's opportunities for opponents are intended to be via kiting or playing around his E cooldown, though I can see a legitimate case being made that he is too strong. Given the nature of his E, he can be a pretty binary matchup for other melee champions to try to fight, especially squishier ones, and I think that the introduction of items like Dead Man's Plate gives a sort of inevitability to him catching up to people.

What are you planning to do with Nidalee? More specifically, Mid Nidalee. Jungle Nidalee seems okay but pretty underwhelming if you don't get a lead early on with her trademark lvl 2 gank. Her Mid lane however is abominable. She gets wrecked by assassins (because she's SUPER squishy) can't last hit for a damn because of her base ad nerf (now she has like the 4th lowest base ad in the game, all the others near that level have enhancements on their basic attacks, like Ori/Teemo) so on top of that, she has no real waveclear apart from cougar form, which makes her vulnerable to practically every champion in lane. I just feel like I have to be way better than the enemy in order to find any kind of success with her in mid lane (And jungle too), and even then she falls off pretty hard, ESPECIALLY in this meta where fighters, hard hitting tanks, and loads of cc are everywhere. She just doesn't do enough on her spear damage because she can rarely follow up. Essentially, I've gotten to the point that I can't really play her anymore. I've tried AD, AP, AP Tank, Pure Tank, etc and she just feels **so** underwhelming no matter what I do. I love her and will continue to play her but when I do I can never be confident of a win, even if I play exceedingly well. I've played well over a thousand games on her, I love Nid's gameplay to death (Btw, KICKASS rework, MAJOR props) and I hate to see her fall to the wayside.
new
> What are you planning to do with Nidalee? I'm not sure what the immediate balance plans are for her at the moment, but if given the opportunity, I would like to be able to go back and re-evaluate her laning experience, which I think is pretty poor. Specifically, it feels like a constant struggle to manage the minion wave without getting chunked for half your health by your lane opponent.

Hello Repertoire, I am a fan of your reworks! Obviously that isn't to say there are some parts I don't like (Ryze Q, Skarner Passive, Garen W), but in general, I really like the direction in which you steered those champions. That being said, what I'm **MOST** excited and worried about is the Taric rework. You see, I'm a long time Taric main. I completely fell in love with Taric around Season 3 and haven't looked back since. I live and breathe Taric, man. And although, honestly, I don't think I would choose anyone else to be making his changes, I'm still scared! What I'm scared about is him getting what I love about him changed drastically. Such as: - Armor Scaling - Functional, yet Stylish - Gems (They are truly outrageous) - Reliable Gameplay - Armor/Other Stat Sharing - Blend of utility and CC - Not a Tank, but a Fighter Kind of rambling here, but in a nutshell, that's what I love about Taric! I think it would break my heart to see any of these things go. So I guess my question to you is... _**How much of these concepts is the new Taric keeping?**_ And I know that must be something hard to deal with, since it happens with every reworked champion and their respective mains. But although some may be a bit too aggressive with their criticisms, let me just say _**we appreciate your and other Rioters feedback immensely. **_ So even though if you do not respond, or if my heart has to be broken, thank you. {{champion:44}} {{champion:44}} {{champion:44}} {{champion:44}} {{champion:44}}

The reason I said Swain is a mess is that he has all this potential to be a grand Master Tactician, but his gameplay doesn't quite Live up to that fantasy. I'd say an example of this is that he has all these DoTs, but they're mostly just things that he puts on the same enemy before walking at them if he can. This isn't to say I think Swain is causing any huge issues in the game, really, just that I think he could be a lot more than he currently is.

Like where does the idea start, why do people feel the need to, where does it travel, what are the reasons for everything, how does it get to you and after that what do you do with it and why, and then finally where do you send it off, etc.?

> Can you take us through the process of reworking a champion? Like where does the idea start, why do people feel the need to, where does it travel, what are the reasons for everything, how does it get to you and after that what do you do with it and why, and then finally where do you send it off, etc.? This will be a brief summary of the process I went through on Taric: First, decide which champion to work on. In Taric's case, his gameplay was pretty flat, but his visuals were also incredibly low quality and out of date, so it made him a good choice. From there, I started early kit prototypes to see what kind of direction we could take him. I probably went through 5+ completely different versions of Taric that were each in playtest for a few weeks before landing on the gameplay hook that he will end up being his update. By now, the basic direction for the kit is set, though it still hasn't fully come together. At this point, we slowly began to spin up concept meetings between myself, his concept artist, his writer, and some producer types that could keep us on track. This process takes several months, and as with the kit design, several different completely different concepts were considered and discarded before landing on the one we chose. By the time we were done with this stage, we had a pretty good idea of what he would look like, the kind of vibes he would give off, and what his story would be. Once the concept had been chosen, we could begin bringing him to life, starting with creating his new model and going from there with VFX, SFX, and animations. Additonally, we begin thinking about promotional material around this time. Simultaneously, I went back to the gameplay and made a few mechanical adjustments to the kit to accommodate for some of the concept decisions we'd made on him, and I also gave some consideration to cutting out some of the superfluous mechanics I'd added to the kit earlier on in its development. This is still about where we are at the moment on Taric, as it's a process that takes several months, and it's one that he's playtested throughout, somewhat to sort out small oddities in the design, but primarily to make sure all the visual and audio indicators are reading correctly. Moving forward, we'll have to begin more balance-focused testing from our team of internal Diamond-Challenger playtesters, as well as bugfix any issues that come up along the way. Following that, it's just a matter of polishing it up, getting it onto PBE, reacting to relevant reactionary feedback during that time, and sending it to Live! I'm not sure how much of that procedural information was already known, so hopefully it was what you had in mind with your question!

This sounds like a pretty dumb question, but will Taric have a mouth animation for laughing, taunting, joking etc. like Gangplank or Talon? I really like it when you see the champions really talk, they just feel so much more alive.

I think this is something that comes pretty standard with a full reboot, so I'd imagine he'll have something along those lines.

For the Taric{{champion:44}} rework, will he be focused more towards single target abilities or will he be an Aoe focused champion. This is in regards to any heals or buffs as well as his damage spells.

Probably mostly single target on the damage side, and mostly more multi-target on the defensive and buffs side of things. Hopefully the split will end up being pretty similar to what it is on Live.

Regarding the mage update. Will there be changes to existing items and new items being introduced that cater to tanky mages? If so I'd be delighted seeing that adding some more defensive Ap items would really benefit good ol' Mordekaiser.
new
> Will there be changes to existing items and new items being introduced that cater to tanky mages? We haven't really nailed down exactly what the item situation is going to look like in the mage update, but I'm pretty sure we'll do at least a small pass, and in my personal opinion, a good candidate for change for someone like Mordekaiser could be a pass on Liandry's Torment.

I don't really want to spam your thread with my question expecially since you are doing a real though and good job answering all of this stuff.. so this will be my last attempt to get a Rioter attention on a matter. What are your opinion about Xerath {{champion:101}}? As he being my main I got really disappointed with keystones since no1 of them is effective, DFT deals too low damage to be noticeable unless you get terribly fed and keep hitting 3+ ppl, TLD is just not his theme and while exploitable for some oneshotting combo (on squishies) it doesn't really help. More generically, is the Immobile Mage rework also taking a look at Mages' synergy with keystones?
new
> What are your opinion about Xerath ? I'll admit I don't think I'm personally very well qualified to give an opinion on Xerath. > More generically, is the Immobile Mage rework also taking a look at Mages' synergy with keystones? This is a really good idea and one that I think we should try to make sure to consider.

Hi again Repertoir. First of all, thank you for answering me about heavy sustain champions :=) I have a second question now for you : With Guinsoo (and Hextech Gunblade to a lesser extent) being now a good item again for hybrid champions, regardless of its power, would you like LoL to have a new champion designed to be played as a hybrid ? Right now we only have 3 champions that are more or less hybrids and they are all quite old : {{champion:24}} {{champion:10}} and {{champion:84}} (only a bit for Akali). If yes, would you like this champion to be melee ? Ranged ? AA-focused (Jax, Kayle) or more spell-focused (Akali) ?
new
> With Guinsoo (and Hextech Gunblade to a lesser extent) being now a good item again for hybrid champions, regardless of its power, would you like LoL to have a new champion designed to be played as a hybrid ? This really depends on what the definition of hybrid is. If it is "someone that mixes spells and AAs to win fights," I think we have a ton of hybrids already. If it's specifically "someone that builds both AD and AP," I could be interested in that champion if there was a good reason for it. To me, the play pattern a champion employs is much more interesting than their purchasing patterns, and play patterns can usually be achieved agnostic to item build. For instance, we now make AD champions that cast a lot of spells, and we could make an AP champion that AAs a lot (though admittedly, we tend not to). I think there's something cool and novel about being a hybrid and your build being different, but I'm not sure it really changes much in their gameplay. As an example, I can see tweaking Jax such that he only bought AD items without his gameplay and counterplay really changing at all.

I was a long time Garen player before the update. While I don't play Garen anymore because he changed so much with the update their are two changes that have stuck with me as strange and are behind why I don't play him anymore. 1. Changing the W passive. As someone who played Garen since season 1, this is almost a straight reversion to the old W that was changed in patch V1.0.0.145. And back when it was changed to the pre-reworked version (i.e. the bonus 20%) their was much rejoicing from Garen players. What was your reasoning for changing it back to the old version after so much time? 2. Changing his power pattern. Old Garen was very strong in lane, but fell off late. While new Garen is okay in lane, but is now a late game champion. This is the biggest reason I don't play Garen anymore, as his power pattern was completely flipped from early game bully to late game terror. What was the reasoning for doing such a drastic change on his power profile?

And back when it was changed to the pre-reworked version (i.e. the bonus 20%) their was much rejoicing from Garen players. What was your reasoning for changing it back to the old version after so much time? One of the reasons for this change is that we were trying to set up Juggernauts to feel really good as Health stackers, and flat resistances synergize very well with Health stacking. The other is that I wanted to make sure there was some gameplay behind it in a way that allowed it to function well with few points in the skill. > Changing his power pattern. This is the biggest reason I don't play Garen anymore, as his power pattern was completely flipped from early game bully to late game terror. What was the reasoning for doing such a drastic change on his power profile? Garen had a reputation as someone of a joke champion with a reputation of being able to be ignored if the game ever went past 25 minutes or so. We wanted Juggernauts to consistently be threats throughout the game, and I couldn't let his early game be quite so strong if he would also remain dominant in the later stages.

Yo Rep. Sorry if i am being invasive, but why you have considered doing this thread? Don' t get me wrong, this is just beautiful and all the community appreciates it and is thanking you not even enough, I was just wondering what ticked your fancy. What made you say " I know I post but i want to break eleven!" or whatever was the case. Thanks again and always :)

> Sorry if i am being invasive, but why you have considered doing this thread? I wanted to get out there and answer a bunch of questions that players had that I felt qualified to and capable of answering. I specifically made the thread because I could put some rules into it like "here's the kind of stuff I feel like I can answer," and then a lot of good questions would come to me. It's pretty difficult to feel like I'm making good progress on reaching out to a lot of players, when 75%+ of the time I spend on Boards is spent looking for questions I can even answer. I guess I just wanted to see if this would be an efficient method.
Designers have been talking more and more about using terrain in interesting ways (see Bard's stun; Grappling Hook idea; Graves' End of the Line, etc.). Did you play around with the idea of having Gems grow out of terrain and having Taric interact with them similarly to Skarner's theme? On a related note, will Taric have any special lines for Skarner since they share a medium of power?

But a few of the Taric iterations I tried did have gems that could be interacted with. Maybe I even chose one! But maybe not... Never really considered special VO for Taric/Skarner, but it's not out of the question. I'd have to make sure it wasn't weird, because we probably wouldn't be able to add more VO to Skarner as well, so it would be a one-way street.

What are your thoughts about current state of {{champion:22}}? I find myself struggling to activate her Q when being engaged with, no abilities synergy to build up stacks but to auto attack. I think that right now she has too much "set up" to finally be into a fight.

I think that right now she has too much "set up" to finally be into a fight. I think she's in a decent spot. The experience you're talking about is an intended weakness behind the spell that aims to allow its incredible strength (no cooldown). These types of weaknesses can be tough pills to swallow, but I think they're something we should do more of. It tells a very clear story to the Ashe player of the types of fights she wants, and a clear story to opponents as to how to combat her.

Hello RiotRepertoir, I've got a couple questions about the changes to Ashe in the preseason. I'm mostly wondering whether a couple of interactions were intentional or if these are bugs. One thing I noticed while testing Ashe this preseason is that her Q stacks are now granted on-attack instead of on-hit. She used to be able to stack Q faster by purchasing Runaan's Hurricane, but now she only gets one stack per auto-attack instead of one stack per bolt. Was that an intentional change due to the no-cooldown Q? Being able to buy Hurricane on Ashe without missing stats was one of the things I was really looking forward to, but this change has made it less amazing than I had hoped. Still fun though! Another thing I found was that Ashe is again able to use her Q-empowered auto-attacks on turrets. She doesn't gain stacks when attacking turrets, but if she shoots some minions first she can unleash the full 5-shot barrage. This interaction had been removed in a previous patch, so I was surprised to see it back without being featured in the patch notes.

This is currently intended. I originally thought about letting Hurricane act as you're describing, but I decided against it because I assumed it would become a mandatory purchase. I'd still be interested in trying it out, honestly... > Another thing I found was that Ashe is again able to use her Q-empowered auto-attacks on turrets. It's currently intended. We could cut it if we had to, but I always thought it was fun, and now that spells don't stack Focus, doing so in many situations would require her to not actually attack the turret for 4 straight attacks, so it really only comes into play when she's pushed her opponent up to the turret, which I think is a nice payout.

To be fair, Taric is up next, but he's still some time out and we're not really sharing too many details yet.

What do you think about the fact that "Immobile Mage" is kind of a redundant classification? Once you remove "mages" that are actually AP assassins ({{champion:7}} {{champion:38}} {{champion:55}} etc) you're only left with 4-5 mages that have mobility spells: {{champion:103}} {{champion:268}} {{champion:85}} {{champion:127}} and sort-of {{champion:115}}.
new
> What do you think about the fact that "Immobile Mage" is kind of a redundant classification? Yeah, I can see that. Internally, we try to establish different terminology for these various types of champions, similar to how we took some "Fighters" and released them together as "Juggernauts." "Fighter" isn't really all that specific as to what the champion is or how they win the game. "Immobile Mage" is pretty similar in that regard.

Hey, as an aspiring game designer I was wondering a few things. 1. What do you focus on most when reworking champions? 2. Do you ever find it hard to relate a character's theme to their gameplay and if so what do you do to get around this? 3. IDK if you work with the numbers but if you do, how do you figure out what number "work"? 4. As a support main, I was wondering if there was one support you could rework (other than Taric), who would it be and what would you do? THX you are the best. From the projects you work on and how you've done all this, I can really tell you are passionate about all of this and that really helps the community/game.
new
> What do you focus on most when reworking champions? This may be a personal preference, but I think I try to focus most on finding a unifying gameplay hook that I think is good and thematically appropriate. Seeing as I work in updates to existing champions, sometimes this is already done for me, and sometimes I get/have to do it. Ashe has permaslow/kiting, Ryze has his passive, Quinn has her R, etc. Having that one thing (or sometimes two things) to build everything around really helps me a lot to make decisions. > Do you ever find it hard to relate a character's theme to their gameplay and if so what do you do to get around this? All the time. I think this is one of the hardest parts about working on an update, in fact. To use Taric as an example, thinking about Gem Magic should actually do was pretty difficult, open-ended, and up to interpretation, and usually when I find myself in situations like that, I try to rely pretty strongly on player expectation more-so than what I personally think "Gem Magic" is. Hope that makes sense in some way. That was a weird answer. > IDK if you work with the numbers but if you do, how do you figure out what number "work"? In the past, I spent a lot more time fiddling with numbers and trying to get them right on my own. With how much our playtesting team has grown and improved over the past year, and with taking on more and more projects, I mostly just try to do what I think makes sense and let the testing team inform me when things seem out of line. There's also PBE feedback down the line, but that can be hit or miss. At the end of the day, I trust the Live environment to let me know when I've missed the mark. They always do... > As a support main, I was wondering if there was one support you could rework (other than Taric), who would it be and what would you do? Kayle, because I think she may offer a really unique opportunity as a "Carry Support," or Alistar, because although he's functional and powerful, he seems so flat and prescriptive.

Hey there, Is Nidalee's viability (in lane) perpetually stuck between a rock and a hard place? First off, fluidity of her kit seems to have been gradually declining since the major Summoner's Rift update released soon after her overhaul (Which I love btw, great job making her shine while retaining her core). Anyone can point to some patch notes as to part of the reason why, but I'd cautiously suggest that her kit may also not be working as intended. Off the top of my head, these are the main problems I'm seeing with her (whether due to bugs, or my pc/internet rig): buggy pounce directions, spears that visually connect but do not register as a hit, unreliable spell queuing (a biggie), and the biggest one -- empowered-pounces on hunted targets randomly not activating (the indicator and the ability). Directly after her overhaul, being able to perform an empowered-pounce after hitting a champ with a spear was so reliable, I'd learned to know exactly when to press W, without even having to see/hear the visual indicator. Nowadays, I don't have any clue what to expect after landing a spear. Finally a bit about her build choices. She still needs tons of early CDR to be able to capitalize on her strengths the most (i.e. mobility, utility, area-domination), but with the current early game, prioritizing CDR means sacrificing damage in-lane, rendering her a non-threat to be easily lane-bullied (due to her squishy melee waveclear). On the other hand, a Nidalee without early CDR can try to ramp up early AP, but can then hardly make use of the rest of her kit to set up the plays she needs to snowball due to the technical issues above, and the predictability of her early attack pattern (without CDR). I'd really like to hear you thoughts on this!

I'd really like to do a pass on her kit to sort out a lot of the oddities you're talking about. Her kit currently pulls her in too many directions as far as stat needs are concerned, and I really think that contributes to her feeling really weak when she doesn't get out to an early lead.

I really dont expect an response since riot always dodges my teemo questions; even when directly confronted with it, but whatever. Nothing to lose. Thoughts on teemo's current state? why is teemo losing his ''half stealth in bush'' passive for something that is far inferior (timer ticks while moving in bush). You used that passive to go into a bush and stealth ASAP to escape enemies. Not to keep walking. I think thats a pretty big nerf. and lastly; thoughts on increasing teemo's ap ratios? Right now teemo's ap ratios are so abysmally awful that building ap is never worth it on him. Its penetration or nothing. Liandries+Void are the most damage for teemo right now. Other ap items are so garbage on teemo that people are actually building first item ad, then liandry/void and then tank. Thanks so much if you respond, repertoir. {{champion:17}}

Hey Repertoir, First off I'd like to thank you for offering this, and say that reading all the answers have me excited and curious for the Taric Rework. Especially seeing you say he'll have "Situationally the strongest spell in League of Legends" and that he might even be viable top lane(I main top) That being said, I'm not entirely sure if this question is Relevant, but I feel the need to ask regardless. When you Rework champions, are you part of the team that reworks their lore as well? I'm not entirely a bookworm on lore, but it upset me when the few lores that I did know of, were chopped up and reduced to a mere 3-4 sentences. I guess what I'm asking is, including Taric, and the mages being updated, after all this is done, should we expect to see more lores being reduced? Also what are your thoughts on lores getting reduced as they have been? Was there a specific reason (that you know of) to reduce them rather than enlarge them? Thanks again~

I can't speak to much on the past on this one, since I haven't worked on my full reboots of champions, but moving forward, I think it's pretty safe to say that on big projects like Taric, Poppy, etc., you can expect new or updated lore, and you can probably not expect new lore on smaller stuff. For Taric specifically, I'm not the writer of the lore, but I am one of the people that's trying to help give feedback to the writer. I don't think there should be a bunch of characters' lore being reduced in the near future, and we haven't written the final lore yet for Taric, but I'd expect it to be closer to 3 paragraphs than 3 sentences.
