What is the difference between a switch statement and an if-else statement (C++ programming)

Does anyone know? If i used an if-else statement or a switch statement for the same problem, will it still give me the same output? (sorry im still a newbie in C++ lol)

We're testing a new feature that gives the option to view discussion comments in chronological order. Some testers have pointed out situations in which they feel a linear view could be helpful, so we'd like see how you guys make use of it.
