Ionian Language (Constructed Scripts)

Hello Guys, Fizz Again.{{sticker:zombie-brand-mindblown}} Since constructed scripts exist in many fiction novels, movies, series, and videogames (like Klingon language, Dothraki language,Draconic, etc), it is time for us League of Legends to create our own fictional languages and its script. Everytime I see annoying Yasuo HASAKI everywhere, I just wanna slip into the game and ask him what the FXCK you are saying. So, I choose Ionia as the objetive place for creating the language, since it is a magic, traditional, cultural, old, and inherited continent, and there does exist dialects according to the champions words. **1. Category** First, we must determine what type of Ionian language is. If not, we would have no idea how to start it. At last, I classify it as one of **Sino-Tibetan languages**(for real world instead of Runeterra World, Obvis.), whose grammatical performance consists of word order and the tones, with the help of function words (equivalent to the preposition in English). **And most of them is Single Syllable, which means "One Syllable = One Word"** Besides, Ionian language is considered as Analytic Language, which means "generally NO conjugation of verbs, no inflection of the words, like sex, case, and numbers ". Like this example: it literally means "The First Lands" in Ionian Language, and it pronounced as "Ai Ou Ni A" **(IONIA means The First Lands in Ionian Language)** https://i.imgur.com/k0U3HKN.png The construction of a complete word is absolutely free, every character or syllable it self is an independent word.{{sticker:slayer-jinx-catface}} **(BTW: Chinese is the most typical Analytic language, and English tends to be it compared with other European languages)** Since Ionia is very old (The First Lands) in Runeterra, I think it is very reasonable to classify it into Sino-Tibetan Family and an Analytic Language, because they are one of the world's primary languages, and evolved very modernly, which means: EASY. And you will notice that, this language is mixed up with the real world's languages, mainly Asian Languages.{{sticker:draven-pose}} Actually, feckly all the fictional languages used in games or film&television are based on western languages. So, for Ionia, I would make an eastern tongues mixed language . **2. Pronunciation ** Ionian's Pronunciation is not very hard. At least its vowels are not so many. On the other hand, the consonant is various and divided into, for example, Voiced, Unaspirated Unvoiced, Aspirated Unvoiced, and The alveolar tap or flap (the "r" of Amor in spanish), etc..... The syllable coda, however, there is only one. which is "n" sound, exactly same as “ん” in Japanese, but it is not pronounced as one single syllable. Here only shows the vowels of Ionian Languages: 10 in total, 7 monophthongs and 3 diphthongs, along with the IPA. https://i.imgur.com/5nphHEu (The IPA of that rare vowel is this: /ɹ̩/ ) This /ɹ̩/ sound could be weakened in some Ionian vocabulary , although in this language there is technically no syllabic (like "m" of Room, or "st" of "star"). Such as, the "d" sound of Zed, or the "r" sound of "Fa-ir" (an Ionian word appeared in Riven and Yasuo's article from the Universe.). It is a whole syllable though. **Tones:** As mentioned, Ionian Language attaches Tones. It is a tonal language, which means** "changing tones changes the meaning completely"**. **But don't worry, Ionia Language is not like Thai language (5 tones), Mandarin (4 tones and one neutral tone), Cantonese (6 tones and 3 checked tones) , Vietnamese languages (6 tones) nor Tibetan language (4 tones).** It has only 2 tones!! Thank God (or thanks Fizz){{sticker:sg-ahri-2}} Therefore, if you learn Japanese, it will be easy for you to handle the tones. (well, a bit different from Japanese tone's law, actually). They are all ** High Tone and Low Tone**. Similar as Japanese, Serbo-Croatian,Shanghainese,Turkish,Ancient Greek, and Swedish, ect. But in practical pronounciation, occurs a little change: ** (This means, Ionian Language is NOT a pure tonal language. It has envolved into a Pitch Accent Language, along with remains of tonal language, let's take a look)** (1) two syllables (characters): The first one high and the second low HꜜL (H means High, L means Low) **IPA: ˥˩ ꜌ ** https://i.imgur.com/jfDvGqR.png (These two Ionian characters means Zed from our game) (The tones are 100% the same as "Zed" in English when you pronounce it) (2) two syllables (charactes): The first one low, and the second high L-H **IPA: ˧ ˥˩** https://i.imgur.com/WHZ6JdE.png (These two Ionian characters means Lee Shin from our game) (3) two syllables (charactes): The first one low, and the second low, as well L-L **IPA: ˦ ˥** (You can see it is the "Heiban sound——accentless" in Japanese) https://i.imgur.com/eP1feMU.png (These two Ionian characters means "The Balance"——Kin Kho) (4) two syllables (charactes): The first one high, and the second high, as well H-H **IPA: ˥˩ ˥˩** https://i.imgur.com/sNN7KVO.png (These two Ionian characters means Ahri from our game) **_See? This rule is not the same as Japanese. When two high tone characters meet, they maintain the original high tone without any change._** _IMPORTANTE: The Function Words in Ionian language are ALWAYS considered as Low Tone._ Let's make examples with the function word "NI" when put in a numerous characters sentence or phrase. (5) two words: Yasuo + the function word NI (in this case we got 4 characters), The distribution of tones are like this: https://i.imgur.com/7WQlQxl.png L-H-HꜜL **IPA: ˦ ˥ ˥ ˩** (These four Ionian characters means "Yasuo's" or "For .... Yasuo.....") (6) two words: Karma+the function word NI (in this case we got 4 characters), The distribution of tones are like this: https://i.imgur.com/xQ9dpaI.png L-HꜜL-L (You can see the function word in Ionian language is never going to be heiban sound——accentless like in Japanese even though the word before it is low tone) IPA: ˦ ˥˩ ˩ ˩ (These four Ionian characters means "Karma's" or "For .... Karma.....") You think creepily difficult and complex? Don't worry, in the practical pronunciation all the tonal rules almost follow the Japanese pronunciation . The reason why I make this looks hard is because it needs to be professional and accurate in linguistic terms. In the future if I have chance, I will show you guys with a video these rules.{{sticker:sg-ezreal}} **3. Scripts/Characters** I designed a very elegant and mellow style for Ionian script, like the style of Ionian Culture that seems harmonious, natural, tranquil, and unified. In the story of Riven and Yasuo "Confessions of a Broke Blade", I see this: > The warrior priest withdrew the scarlet cloth, revealing a weapon and sheath both bigger than a kite shield. The scabbard was etched in the harsh strokes of Ur-Noxian, the heavy angles and slashes in stark contrast to **the fluid script of Ionia**. You can see this quote is the perfect reference. Actually, the design inspiration comes from this picture in LOL universe: **Ionian Magic Rocks** https://i.imgur.com/zdzhlTF.jpg as well as the logo of** KinKou Order (Or we can say the "Yin&Yang Taijitu"){{sticker:galio-happy}} ** https://i.imgur.com/KDI6h5i.jpg Then, which is the **Yin** and the **Yang**? Maybe someone would have thought that Ionian Scripts is just another Phonogram (linguistics),like most writing systems in The Earth. But unfortunately, I wanna our Ionian Language be totally different. So I create a half Phonogram and half Logogram. It is like a fusion of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Chinese Characters. See this example: https://i.imgur.com/Oyil0lI.png **(This character is pronounced as "kha", and it means "The Light", combined with the element "Fire”)** The logo-radical has no sound or voice, it is just like a logo to represent some meanings, developed from the early pictographic characters in Ionia. _(Yes, I take mainly the Seal Script of Chinese Characters and some other pictographic characters in The Earth as reference during the creation .)_ Correspondingly, it implies that I must create hundreds, even thousands of logo-radicals. (Since one of the Sino-Tibetan Languages' characteristic is the Single Syllable). {{sticker:sg-janna}} ~~**A huge work!!!!**~~ Besides, there are some other elements of pronounciation radical. Such as: Secondary Consonants**"y" (i) **and **"w" (u)** https://i.imgur.com/0n0xluZ.png When Secondary Consonants are put in a syllable that contains primal consonant, they are always pronounced after the primal consonant. Like above, the y(i) sound, without it, pronounced as "la"; with it, pronouced as "lia". Another element is the Syllable Coda "n", already mentioned above. https://i.imgur.com/0ZySH4F.png Read as "kho" without it ; Read as "khon" with it. {{sticker:vlad-salute}} Someone may wonder, as Ionian language is logogram (each character has its own meaning), how could Ionian people write foreign's languages when translating, like Valoran common language, shuriman, freljodan, even vastayan? Intelligent Ionian people, (which is me in this situation), figured out a way to resolve such problem, called _Half Phonogram Writing_. Like this one: It means "Shieda Kayn", the complete name of Kayn - The Shadow Reaper https://i.imgur.com/69PTtE4.png (The last two characters mean, literally, meeting or connecting and sense or feel, respectively) Kayn is a guy from Noxus, adopted by Zed when he was child in the boy scouts during Noxian Invasion. So his family name is absolutely written in Half Phonogram Writing (abr. HPW). However, even though I can't confirm where the given name of Kayn come from, given by Zed or just it's his original noxian name, I design it in the Ionian way. _ (No matter which, even it is a noxian name, I guess Zed would pick two Ionian characters with good meaning for him when transcribing. )_{{sticker:leblanc-funny}} In HPW, we can see the phonetic part (The Yin Part), but what is the part down there in place of logo-radical? As I explained above, each Ionian character has one unique tone, high or low, it is inherent. So when people learn a character, the tone is remembered by them naturally. Seeing the character, knowing the sound and the tone, so it's not necessary to put a tone sign there. But now that the HPW expresses only the phonetic part of a foreign language, it dosen't show any tone, so people can not recognize it. That is why we should add the tone signs in the Yang part. **Also, for the KinKou Rules-Balance and Harmony-** Black one is the high tone while the white one is the low tone. As for some Vastaya, those who have deep relation or connection with human kind could have a entire Ionian Name, and those who don't like human or isolated from human society may adopt the HPW. Like Wukong, with the WU of "Wuju" https://i.imgur.com/HVzobSL.png One the contrary, Xayah. https://i.imgur.com/qYkfXjg.png **4. Grammar** About this one, the best reference for Ionian Languages is of course Chinese The perfect example for Character languages and Analytic Languages, let alone in Chinese exist Ancient Writing System which remains a obligatory teaching content for middle schools. Therefore it is the best reference for building Ionian Writing System Of course, other languages's grammars will also be used in the creation of Ionian. Karma's sould is from ancient Ionia, so her spells reflects the ancient tongues. But the truth is, nowadays, Ionian people use the ancient Ionian written language as the standard written style. Too long, a little jerky, and lengthy, but the expression is very accurate, sometimes can be poetic if you want. For example: **Karma's typical spell when casting ults (entire vesion)** "Sa elei sa ti li vi sa e ra https://imgur.com/QBAo4by It means: _**Seeking and seeking the true meaning of the magic. **_ The magic is “Sa e ra”, three characters, each one means respectively "soul” “Mundane”and"Merge” _**(When the spirit world meet the mundane and merge, the magic is born)**_ That is the meaning of Magic in Ancient Ionian Language (Also the Written Style). You can find the meaning is quite clear and accurate, this is the reason the written Ionian is applied in Code. Some function words can also be different. The function world VI from the same example is exactly "of" in English, meaning ownership concept. However, in modern language, DI is much more used, and the position is upside down, like: _Apple VI(of) Garen Garen DI('s) Apple_ (The function word: DI) https://imgur.com/yIArKfh You can see the logo-radical is like somebody embracing his belongs.{{sticker:slayer-jinx-wink}} As for pronunciation, the "S" sound in ancient times was like θ ("th" of thanks) Like Karma says: **Rath Rian Oune Vi** In some north province this sound is kept as dialect. **5. History, Culture, Geography, and Evolution** Maybe you will ask, since Ionia is such a big continent, far away from north to south, there must be dialects. _**Then how do Ionians fuse one pronunciation into a unique character that is spread until now and to all the country???**_ For example, perhaps in certain area the "A" sound may have more than one , or the pronunciation may have more than 2 tones. There is another reference from LOL universe, the same article of riven and yasuo, indicating that in Ionia do exist a Common Language: > Like most Noxians, Riven had learned enough of **Ionia’s common tongue** to command and order, but like the land itself, the accent of each village had a unique personality flavored by its people. She nodded at the judge and waited. First, guys should know that in Ionian there is a language called common language originated from North Ionia. **(Specifically, provinces such as Navori around Placidium, the heart city of Ionia)** During thousands years, Ionian people gather here for learning, communicating even trading** (At least I can guess out such knowledge according to current official information from the lore.)**{{sticker:poppy-wink}} As the center of Ionia, besides, we can see the north island is the biggest of all , reasonably the common language would arise there. https://i.imgur.com/6XVpOec.png (**North and Middle dialect areas have the LEAST difference with the Common Language Area** since they are close geographically.) The south dialect area has the biggest difference with common language area, such as they have more syllable codas: m, s, k, t, p, ng, like English or we can say : like Valoran Common Language {{sticker:sg-jinx}} ) And sometimes they, as well as people from other areas add local symbols or marks in the characters to express their own pronunciation, but for tacit agreement they only use them in their own provinces in unofficial way. Like Mandarin and Cantonese, although they have huge gap in terms of pronunciation, people use the same Chinese characters and they can at least communicate by writing . This is one of logogram's properties {{sticker:sg-kiko}} Same for Ionia. But what has caused this unique and regular Ionian Characters? Who invented them? ** The answer is (I designed) that Ionian Humans and Ionian Vastayas together create them!!!!** At very first, like most human civilization in the Earth, ancient Ionian people created the pictographs, but they were too many that ordinary people couldn't learn and use them, even though they had started the process of simplifying. Then, certain group of vastaya race that we already forget who or what they were, wanted to communicate with human, but they couldn't handle such a huge number of Ionian pictographs . As a result, they invented a system of alphabet to express their phonetic with less writing . Ionian human liked it and used it for phonetic notation of those characters. Surprisingly, two systems of languages come mixed in the past thousands of years, resulting in the final Ionian characters, where the Vastaya Phonetic Alphabet become the Yin part and the simplified pictographs converted in the radical for the Yang part. **Beside, the whole transformation took place in the North Provinces, that is why the standard characters only reflected the north part's dialects.** {{sticker:sg-ahri-2}} The creation of a constructed scripts is a long term thing, and I need to wait for Riot publishing more information and lore about Ionia, because no languages are made without the base of culture and history. Also, the creation of character's logo-radicals will cost much time!!! {{sticker:sg-jinx}} But I hope you guys like them
