Maple Nector mentioned that you folks were looking into changes that would allow you to focus entirely on solo queue and not so heavily on pro play. What're the status of those changes/are they still coming?

Hi Meddler! Have you considered making Zoe's W orbs spawn closer to her, but be destructible a la Zyra plants?
: Good catch! We'll address it.
Hi! Since you're on this: would you be able to have a look at Illaoi's colour story? It's kinda rife with typos (I think an earlier version may have been pushed out)? Honestly, it reads like a first draft so that would really really make sense to me. [Here is the link for ease of access](, but basically it doesn't have any grammar in punctuation if there's a dialogue tag (needing one of these bad boys — **,**). So, for example: > “Truth Bearer, this is why we must retreat to Buhru. We cannot save the paylangi” the Hierophant said. OR > “You’ve mentioned that before” Illaoi said, walking around the stone table in the center of the room. She rolled her shoulders, loosening the muscles to fight off a yawn. Seems so minor, but it feels a little like Illaoi was neglected here :'( Also: Syndra's recent story -- renamed _The Dreaming Pool_ from _The Dreaming Cave_, still has The Dreaming Cave as the title on a bunch of non-US versions. Like the UK version [which you see find here]( and the Australian English version [which you can see here]( The link titles are fine but the in-article title is wrong. Hope this helps! {{sticker:poppy-wink}}
: Are you referring to this 175-word extract from her previous bio? _Throughout her youth in Ionia, Syndra's reckless use of magic terrified the elders of her village. They took her to a remote temple, leaving her in the care of an old mage. To Syndra's delight, the mage explained that the temple was a school - a place where she could develop her talents under his guidance. Though she learned much during her time there, Syndra no longer felt her power growing as it had in her youth. Her frustration grew, and she finally confronted her mentor, demanding an explanation. He revealed that he had dampened Syndra's magic, hoping to help her learn control and restraint. Accusing him of betrayal, she advanced on the mage, commanding him to lift the spell that was holding her back. He backed away, telling her that if she couldn't control herself, he would be forced to nullify Syndra's magic completely. Furious, she summoned her power and dashed the old man against the walls. With her mentor dead, Syndra felt the rush of her unbounded potential for the first time in years._
That is almost definitely what that user is referring to, yeah. It's a really important piece from her old lore—in my opinion, the only thing that needs to actually be changed here. Others might disagree on that, advocating larger changes, but I'm more or less happy with everything else so long as her character is in-tact. You could really add something meaningful here: have the hermit priest threaten her with severing her connection to magic—it doesn't need to be something he can actually do. He's just trying to calm her down. But _clarify_ the threat. Make Syndra a real victim of Ionia's 'veil of harmony'. What we received in the new lore: >She felt more betrayed than she ever had before. Konigen tried to calm her, which only fueled her anger… and in that moment, his focus was lost. The foundations of the temple shook. The morning light seemed to pale. Syndra rose from the floor, as her frustrations surged within her. She snatched dark orbs from the air, and cast them through her mentor’s body, forcing him to feel all of her bitter outrage as he died. There's just something inherently unlikable in this. She kills someone who's trying to calm her down, and I agree that it's characterisation in its own right but it isn't _Syndra_. The extract above? Also pretty unlikable, but it was getting at something that you could improve on and clarify and make her stronger as a person for it. What's the design intent here, on you guys' part? I feel like it's been brought up a lot in this thread. Describing her outrage as bitter doesn't cut it; have her responding to a threat by someone in Ionia. Make the moment where Syndra becomes the Dark Sovereign pack more of a punch. Come on, Scath. One little change. I'm sure the localisation team(s?) won't mind.
: This is apparently a common misconception. We even reworded the bio to make it clearer, based on concerns that were voiced to the writer by (a VERY SMALL number of) players when the draft story was leaked... Syndra is not "stealing" magic. She is not pulling magic from other people, or the land, to fuel herself. The difference is in he term _leach_ (which is used in the lore) and _leech_ (which is not). They are very different in meaning. Her power is unique. It comes from within her. She doesn't fully understand it, because no one ever taught her how it works... but it seems to get stronger when she is in a "negative" state of mind. And when it is at its strongest, and she uses it and walks away, the residual effects on the magic of the land around her are quite disturbing. Without understanding how or why, she is creating "magical fallout" that permanently (?) sours the spiritual energies of the environment nearby. This is why, presumably, the Spirit of Ionia itself seems to have tried to imprison her. IMO, Syndra is now a character with a thematic conflict, where before she was rather lacking. She is a personification of not being aware of the consequences of your own actions, but also of the dangers of marginalising people who don't fit into the dominant worldview - can you imagine if she'd been born in Noxus with this power? They would have been very impressed, and nurtured and trained her, and let her loose on the front lines at the first opportunity. She's not evil. She was just dealt a difficult hand of cards, in the grand scheme of things.
My main complaint, a change which I think would just be good for Syndra's character in general, is making the hermit-priest (Konigen) actually threaten Syndra. Previously, what we had for Syndra was: > Syndra challenges the old monk on her dampened powers, she begs to be understood, he threatens to strip her magic—whether or not he's capable of doing that is irrelevant. To Syndra, who has been feared at every turn, even turned away by her parents (this is projection; we don't know what her family life was in the old lore outside of her being feared). What this has become: > Syndra challenges the old monk, he tries to calm her down, she kills him. It feels to us like nuance is being stripped. Aside from this, people are _still_ confused about her stealing magic. Is it not possible the fault isn't on readers here?

I think it's just super, super rare. The only exceptions seem to be Teleport and Hextech Gunblade. I agree I don't see it often either, though.
: Hey Meddler! I want to ask a couple of questions to you and your colleagues. Why some champions like {{champion:145}} and {{champion:142}} allowed to stay in the meta for so long but some other champions never allowed to enter into meta or stay into it more than couple weeks? (like {{champion:120}}, {{champion:103}} etc) As both avid player and lcs follower, I really don't like to see Zoe and Kai'Sa in every game. Before Kai'Sa's release, you guys said that she is a high-risk high reward champion much like Vayne, but all I see that full AP Kai'Sa's throwing W from the neighborhood only to deal at least 1k damage to anyone. That is not I call "high risk high reward" For Zoe{{champion:142}} , my complain is about her W. In a team fight, she can use 9 flash (in theory). That is absurd, I know you guys nerfed ms and damage a little bit but I think that there should be a cooldown on her W. It's not fun to play against her. I'm genuinely believe that she needs Azir and Ryze treatment. Also do you have any plan for 100% pick ban Taliyah{{champion:163}} jungle? It's beyond busted and I'm disappointed that there is no nerf in the PBE yet. Finally, can you guys buff {{champion:103}} Ahri's passive? That 20% ms buff when you hit two spell is sooooo weak. You can't even feel if you're getting the ms buff or not. Thanks for coming today. Really looking forward to see what you think about all of these.
Zoe can't use 9 flashes (in theory or in practice). She can use the enemy team's summoner spells, and those dropped by minions (which are gated by being random, and your chance of getting Flash is actually quite low compared to, say, Cleanse). I also don't really like seeing Zoe every game in pro play, but I also don't think she's ridiculously overtuned. I think pro players just value her specific strengths right now, and other mages are quite broadly weak. Taliyah will probably need some more nerfs, though I'm not sure what. There's a bunch of different things that could be hit. Celerity + Waterwalking's strength is probably contributing to her excess power (Nocturne too, although Lethal Tempo buffs were significant for him), rather than the problem just being Taliyah's kit itself. Ahri is doing very, very well right now. I agree that there's some real lack of satisfaction on her passive, but she will have to lose something else to get that.

Do you have any plans to look at systemic changes to reduce the disparity between pro-play champions and those for solo queue? It's a consistent pain point for players who main certain types of champions and can't have changes because of a separate set of players they don't feel attached to*. * *Kalista, Ryze, Azir, Shen, Tahm, Syndra, Viktor, Galio are the ones which come to mind, although I'm sure there's more.

: Maybe they are interested in the runes and sent a Void minion to fetch it. That must be it, but yeah it's kinda confusing. {{sticker:sg-zephyr}}
My understanding is that the Void entity was watching over and guarding that particular rune, likely holding it for the Watchers' return. It appeared very quickly and didn't make any efforts to move the Rune. I'd expect that the Voidborn wasn't really interested in taking it for itself, but was making sure it wasn't taken away from them. Ryze didn't seem surprised to see it, so he probably know what he was getting into. Hell, his splash art shows that he's being grabbed by some kind of Void creature.
: >there's a very, very clear implication that it's a Watcher Eh, it doesn't say that Ryze "faced" a Watcher, and given how easily he dispatched the entity, I didn't believe it was one. The text implies their interest, not their presence.
Do you really not think mentioning the Watchers next to a massive Void entity is going to make people think it's them? I didn't say that's what the text said. What I said was: it's what the text _implies_. I was a bit thrown by the idea that was a Watcher, and it made me unhappy to consider that it might be (so this new revelation on the boards is a good thing in my eyes), but it isn't just about what the text says. Wording is definitely important here, as is implicature; the average reader is going to be going on and on about how it was a Watcher for ages because of this. It just reminds me of the Kai'Sa confusion—players get confused, things aren't communicated clearly or in proper course. If this isn't a Watcher, although it looks like one given the concept arts we have of them before, then adding an extra line of clarification doesn't break immersion. Look at the other comments in here. You aside, and your positive response being the only one a Rioter responded to, **people are confused about this**. My problem isn't the content. It's the confusion stuff like this causes. It seems so foreseeable. I don't know what else to say. I dunno. As a huge lore person, misconceptions drive me really crazy—and they're probably going to continue to show up for a while because of this. Anyway, the cinematic's great, thoroughly enjoying watched it, excited to see what's next!
: Wouldn't you rather we gave you such confirmation or denial in cool stories, rather than definitely-not-canon board posts?
I think the issue here is that a lot of people just think threads are going to be left dangling forever—there's still so much we don't know about new champions (not even necessarily old ones), and it doesn't always feel like answers are coming. So, people want you to chime in, yeah, because they care about the world, and don't have enough faith that they're going to get answers in the near future.
: If A-Sol is scared of it Ryze doesn't stand a chance without the runes.
I think it's really important to remember that the Runes won't actually make Ryze that much stronger, not without a severe cost and devastation; if he gives in and begins to use the Runes, then they'll be the master of him—not the other way around. No mortals can wield the World Runes. They are beyond Ryze. Ryze knows this. It's what makes him special :) Also really interesting note: the tendrils grabbing onto Ryze from his splash art are likely those of this Voidborn, or a similar one.
: I was told this was a Voidborn, like Velkoz or Reksai, not a true Watcher— They are much much **much ** bigger/scarier.
You might want to update the map again, then, because there's a very, very clear implication that it's a Watcher (and because of this misunderstanding, most people are going to think that's a Watcher, at the very least).

Do you think letting enemies walk over Zoe's shards would be a fair way to bring her down a bit without damaging her numbers?

Champion disparity between pro play and casual play is a real issue. Do you have any plans to try and deal with this without sacrificing player's feeling engaged when they watch the game vs play it? Additionally: do you think moving from 'updating' champions in VGUs rather than entirely re-doing them could be a good way to alleviate player pain in the future?

: Apologies this ended up being a day later, rather than later in the same day. Ended up being a really busy Friday at work. Short answer is that the difference in effectiveness for Syndra between pro and normal play is what's making us hesitate on buffs here. She's a bit weak in normal play, but seeing some pro play recently. She's also got a kit that, when she clicks with the current state of pro, can move her up in priority really fast. Going to talk with the designer looking at her next week, see what our plan as a result is. Will then share that back in one of these posts once I've got some direction or details to talk about, rather just a problem statement.

Going to talk with the designer looking at her next week, see what our plan as a result is. Will then share that back in one of these posts once I've got some direction or details to talk about, rather just a problem statement. Please deal with Syndra changes yourself. Every time she has been handed off to another developer they have totally misunderstood the fundamental tempo and nature of her kit, and players (not just Syndra players) have suffered for it. Dedicate some time to her, like you managed with Lissandra, and give her some changes which reduce her pro-play ubiquity and make her stronger in the hands of regular players. I understand why you won't balance separately for pro-play and the regular League playerbase—players playing the same game they watch is important for player engagement. But this disconnect—which only occurred after her midseason changes, outside of a few before that she was an uncontested champion—is really causing problems. Those players aren't Azir mains, nor Ryze mains. This disconnect is not standard for them, and shouldn't continue to be. Find the time, and handle this yourself.
: Hey Meddler, Multiple tweets/posts talked about Syndra definitely being looked at for buffs. Her playrate is lower than it's ever been (since I can remember before MYMU), her winrate is not great for only mains playing her (even I stopped playing her last month), and her pro-play win rate in season 8 is only 42% according to the website that offers proplay statistics. The Syndra mains subreddit had to condense a ton of posts because everyone is just so frustrated that she's been ignored for a potential buff since so long. Back before the item changes, it was stated she was looked at for a buff but the team wanted to "see where she ended up" - and her win rate/play rate have gone down quite a lot since then. We aren't asking to make her pick/ban status, but when she has that low of a win-rate in pro-play, causes that much frustration for the mains, and has been on the decline for so long now, just a small buff could help (maybe something similar to Ahri/Viktors buffs)! Thanks.
A few points: * Your frustrating is understandable. But Syndra is a champion now who is highly sensitive even to small buffs. Adding a little damage to her Q might be enough to push her back to near ubiquity in the pro scene. Reverting the change to Force of Will would certainly make her priority rise massively. * As one of the mods on the Syndra Mains subreddit, we are seeing so much frustration coming from other Syndra players right now — you have no idea the amount of comments that are simply unhelpful. People asking for help on Syndra? They're being told not to pick her. That frustration is coming from a sincere place, and Syndra _is_ weak for the majority of the playerbase. * That said, people acting angrily at Riot for communicating that, yes, she's in a weak spot -- but she is so sensitive to changes that they're taking their time to evaluate what she actually needs. Do you really just want mana reductions? Do you really just want an extra 10 damage here or there, or a slightly increased ratio? I think Syndra needs _work done_ to her. She needs Riot to give her some developer time. And she will get it, and it's fair to ask -- but considering what she needs to not be permaban status is a real, important consideration. Also, Syndra's winrate in pro-play is low, but her presence is still high among players who are confident on her. That is an indicator that they shouldn't push it. Her kit is immensely powerful. BONUS POINT: Syndra isn't actually that weak. Anecdotally, Syndra players can't even agree on whether or now she's totally weak; her weakness may be due to the _meta_, not just Syndra's kit being weak right now. Champions being less squishy across the board, able to shrug off her crowd control, means she could become 100% P/B in a few months when the meta changes again. Just some food for thought!
: Tooltips Update
Hey! This looks sweet. One of the issues players seem to be having with Aatrox's tooltips, though, is that information is hidden under the shift key when it's information that should really be readily available (I know his E grants him attack damage; I'm looking at the tooltip to determine how much). Basic numbers should always be available, I feel. What I would love: some communication for AD champions on whether some abilities scale with total AD or bonus AD. An example of this is Caitlyn, who has both ratios for bonus and total on different abilities. She was just the first one that came to mind but there's loads of examples. Any comments on those instances? :) Additionally: if you're going ahead with this, there are some champions that could really benefit from more information. For example, Taliyah's Q damage is really hard to determine for most players, and varies against champions, minions, monsters. Ahri's W tooltip provides a "maximum single target damage" stat. Is there a way to get that in for some other champions?

: Quick Gameplay Thoughts: July 11
Hey, Meddler. Got a few comments re: Syndra. Right now, she has a clear presence in pro play, where she's picked or banned 100% depending on how confident players are with her. Between some teams, she's nonexistent; I think that's a good thing. That said, her winrate in pro play does seem to be quite low, indicating that even if she's prominent -- she may not be hitting the mark. Her winrate has always been historically low in solo queue during times when she hasn't been outright overtuned. Following on from this, **I don't know if outright buffing her is the way to go.** We know where that ends up (some of us end up not being able to play our favourite champion). With that said, I do think she requires _something_. Damage doesn't seem the way to go, nor do mana cost changes, but I have a suggestion: **Have you given any thought to tying Syndra's passive upgrades to ability power (a la Kai'Sa) instead of levels?** It increases her snowball, but doesn't just flatly make her more powerful. That said, this may require more dev time than you're currently able to allocate to her, researching what kind of changes would be need to support those kind of changes. I know you're tired of being asked, and I'm really sorry — but we've having a lot of internal debate spread across a few Discord servers over what specifically Syndra needs, and there's so much variation. Some people think she's weak. Other people think she's fine. **What do you think? Not from the team, but just you as the lead of the design team, and Syndra's original designer.** Hope your day goes well! **Bold** for the important bits; know you're a busy dude.

If these changes go through, will Lissandra's Frozen Statues be destructible to Ornn (E)? Will that make them detonate early?
: Thoughts on Syndra and Karma? Both are in a pretty weak spot, even for champions who have classically needed to be a little weak due to pro-play. I know you said Karma will need more work down the road, but can we expect some numbers buffs in the meantime until she can get the love she needs?

I feel awful asking again, because I know you're inundated by these requests every time you post, but did you land anywhere in particular on Syndra? Additionally: the TP nerfs hit PBE yesterday. Those are _big_ nerfs. Do you have some context? :) And last but not least: do you think, if these Lissandra changes (which I like) are to ship, she'll have her mana costs tweaked a little?
: 1) What is being buffed on Karma in the meantime? You specially talked about doing that this patch. 2) Karma is getting a substantial amount of work being done on her kit. What are some of the early ideas on her kit that you are thinking of fixing, reworking or giving her? 3) Will Karma get her art assets finally addressed, such as no shield casting animation or the fact that she didn't have a running animation to begin with? 4) Are Developers looking into bringing back her old kit and maybe her fans? ----------- Questions not about Karma: 1) I played Malzahar recently and I feel like the rework landed him in a horrible spot. I used to love playing this champion but I feel like now he is in a spot where he can do nothing because he has such a stat checky kit. What are you planning to do with Malzahar to put him back in a spot that players enjoy playing him again, but not making him unbearable to play against? 2) Can you give us any insight as to who this mini VU is or how you like it so far?
I'm sorry, but there is _so much more gameplay_ in Malzahar's post-6.9 state. Players didn't enjoy playing against old Malzahar, and there is significantly more actual stuff in his kit that can be played around. What do you mean by stat checky? Because there are DoTs? There's gameplay around those DOTs. They do less damage unless you hit additional skills, and they draw Voidlings, and are refreshed by his ultimate. So I don't know what you really mean by this.
: > Whether you see it or not, and I know you do, Kai'Sa is sexualised on purpose, and it worked. What about Kayn? The pretty boy with ridiculously long hair and naked torso? Very sexy looking naked torso? As an assassin he has no reason to look this way, yet he does. Where's the outrage?
On surface, that's actually pretty fair; League _appears_ to offer a kind of equal discrimination, where all characters are sexualised. Frankly, this _is_ an issue, but the reality is it's more of a distraction. Don't let it distract you. Kayn specifically is allowed to become pretty grotesque when he transforms into Rhaast. Ornn, Pyke, Aurelion Sol, Ivern, Kled -- all recent champions with no sexual angle to their design. That isn't true with female characters, not in the distance past, and not right now. Camille -- thicc. Irelia -- thicc. Xayah -- exposed thighs (sex _does_ sell). Even Illaoi, whose base design sells her fantasy and not sex, has a big boob window into Resistance. Sexualising champions in alternate skins lines is what Riot does. Despite being against this on record, MF's still basically just two breasts jiggling on a walking animation. _Look_ at Gun Goddess. It's really, really ridiculous. Male characters in League get to be hot in varying ways; League's female champions get big waistlines. Kalista and Rek'Sai offer something different, but they're outliers. Frankly, I don't really have much interest in this conversation (not you and me; I mean the sex appeal conversation in general). My raising it only distracted you from the actual content of my comment because people get so offended by hearing that Riot Games exploits the straight male demographic (like most companies do; Blizzard's definitely tried to create some diversity of body type from the get-go). The problem here is that **the writers are being held accountable for content they do not control.** Read the rest of the message. I wish I hadn't included the last part, but man, you're just ignoring other evidence (IronStylus' tweet, one of many). Also, I don't know if you think you're going GOTCHA! YOU HYPOCRITE! But read the sentence directly following what you quoted instead of trying to argue selectively. That's not how discussions work.
: A toad, a weasel and a hamster. (A toad with wings, obviously!) :-P By the time they were trapped, the Sunborn were pretty far along from their Ascended forms. They had learned how to craft their bodies with magic, to suit their purposes/personality. Some of them might still have been just like "the dark side" of their original Shuriman god-warrior forms, others might not even have resembled anything human at all. I mean, though - does it matter? Do you actually want to know, or would you not rather speculate about it with everyone else?
They probably want to know, because if you don't tell them, they're probably not going to find out. {{champion:32}} Why are you being rude to this guy? He has no other way to get answers. If you aren't going to tell him, why respond like this?......... >I mean, though - does it matter? Do you actually want to know, or would you not rather speculate about it with everyone else? What they _actually might want_, to not be glib, is to find this sort of thing out in consistently released lore drops, instead of being told by word of god on a forum...
: Out of interest, who told you that?
One of you trawled through my chat logs to find out last time, and fired the guy. This one isn't going on my conscience. Please try to shift some power from invisible higher-ups into the actual narrative writers that players are _actually holding accountable_ for changes they have no control over. If you want a longer comment on this topic, look at my comment history. In there you'll find _public record_ messages. You could also, you know, have a chat with these writers about it. The problem here isn't them voicing dissent, or someone giving me (false) information that is causing trouble. This is just another example of what feels like a deeply systemic problem in this company; narrative isn't taken that seriously, it's a way to bind champion thematic to champion gameplay, to deepen player involvement, and make them want to buy skins. And Riot's a company, so I get that. But the lack of real interest from higher-ups in providing long-term narrative goals outside of product launches... well, what's the point? Why am I here, Scath? I'm super drained of pouring energy into Runeterra when no sustained attempts are made to follow-up. Another Rioter commented recently saying, Until recently a lot of Rioters didn't even think players cared about lore. WHAT? I can't find that comment now. Ask your writers which one of them said it; they're the only people whose posts I pay attention to on the boards outside of Meddler. >{{champion:136}} "In a constantly shifting cosmos, a world this static is... refreshing." I don't agree. And please -- just copy and paste Illaoi's colour story into MS Word and let it auto-fix the typos. Was that a formatting issue? Did no one even look at it when it went up? O_o

: I did, this has been a problem though as we generally release the lore after the announcement of the Champion. This is something we are looking to fix in the future, so that the lore comes out with the announcement of the Champion.
Honestly, it feels like there are so many gaps in the lore now. The writers keep telling us—over and over again—that they simply aren't permitted the scope to expand the universe. I was literally just told on Twitter that the writers did not decide on the new direction for the darkin -- that was decided "at a much higher level" (Laurie Goulding). Please. The solution here is not to send out an email telling the writers to quieten down. The solution is to give them a higher degree of freedom. Stop binding them so tightly to projects. Allow a much more coherent, consistent release of lore and stories. You don't need to put every bit of it on the client. You just need to let them get content out there to create an actual world. Players have so many questions. It does not leave a lot of intrigued; it leaves us thinking, fuck, we aren't going to get any answers to these cool questions anytime soon, if ever. What's Azir been doing recently? It feels like nothing, and it feels like nothing for three years. Aurelion Sol first felt a tinge of freedom a thousand years ago. He is never going to be free. Kayn is the perfect indicator of a League of Legends champion: he is trapped in a battle we will have have no resolution for because his fight is tied to gameplay. Swain? What deal did the demon make with him? When are you going to release content for these champions that _actually answers questions_? _Confessions of a Broken Blade_ was nice, but why devote three parts to her when you have material for other champions? I loved COABB, but damn, please, keep going. I don't even want to start on how much confusion was caused by Kai'Sa's release coupled with Where Icathia Once Stood—I pay really close attention to the lore and your Ask Riot response was the first time I'd heard she wasn't in the Void, and now there's so much confusion caused from Twilight of the Gods. Where's the sense of scope in the world? I think the writers have these answers. I think they don't have the ability to release them to us. And when they do -- when they have to give us world-changing revelations in Q&As (or, more likely, are completely ignored; players want to know how the vastaya reproduce, and we get silence and jokes). I get that you are human. I get that you don't want to give it all out at once. But the reality is -- if you do not give us information within a month of a champion's release, they are effectively dead to us. WHERE IS EKKO? WHERE IS BARD? WHERE IS SYNDRA? WHERE IS GNAR, ZAC, ILLAOI? WHY HASN'T LISSANDRA DONE ANYTHING SINCE SHE WAS RELEASED? (I know she has content coming; I'm sure it will be lipservice). WHY DO I HAVE NO SENSE OF THIS WORLD? I can't tell my friends who don't play the game anything but flavour text because its characters don't _do_ anything. Please give them the ability to produce content, because by god, do they fucking love those jobs. They favourite every tweet. They reply to every email. We know they are invested, but it seems like product leads are so, so intent on gameplay that you forget that a sizeable portion of us want a concrete world we can think about, engage with, and try to understand. Giving Varus placeholder lore in November and not communicating that it was a placeholder? We were explicitly told stuff about the darkin, but nope, _yank!_ And the writers weren't allowed to tell us, according to Laurie, because man, wouldn't that look bad (also: his reply is a bit hyperbolic; I asked for "Hey! This is WIP. Stay tuned :)" and he responded with: >I'd ask you to consider how it would look if a new piece of content was released by Riot, and a handful of Rioters then decried it on the boards, social media, every soapbox they could find... I can tell you, it wouldn't go down well, here! Not what I asked for. What I asked for was reasonable, and not hard to communicate. I don't buy that you don't have the resources, honestly. I don't buy that it isn't healthy for the company to have a consistent lore. These are words directly from a Rioter: > I'd love to set lore in stone, and never change it again - but please, understand that many teams at Riot are very much against that. This is abhorrent. This is alienating. This does not bode well for the future of the world. We want more stories. EDIT: All of this on the heels of IronStylus' tweet from about an hour ago pointing out Riot's hypocrisy of celebrating Pride Week, when executives explicitly prevent real diversity because it's "pandering". Yes, because gay and bisexual characters have to justify their existence in a story. They can't just be there, on the forefront. I can't believe Blizzard bet Riot Games to this. This stinks. This company's culture stinks. Let go of the terrified, executive-mandated corporate culture. Whether you see it or not, and I know you do, Kai'Sa _is_ sexualised on purpose, and it worked. So are most champions, honestly, but just... add some diversity. Stop being so terrified. Is it Tencent? What's going on? I don't expect answers; but please do some thinking on this. : This. Exactly this. Myisha is not Zoe, and I don't think Riot has claimed that anywhere.
Honestly, this leaves me really perplexed. If Myisha is not Zoe using a false name, and that's what I was told, then why is Myisha carrying objects that Zoe seems to like having? The key, for instance. Her general appearance seems to match Zoe pretty perfectly match Zoe minus the hair, and _Zoe changes her hair colour in her colour story_. I dunno. There's so much confusion being introduced by this plot element that I'm left to think it's on the writers here. If this wasn't intended to be Zoe -- the character that players actually care about -- being fully controlled by the Aspect of Twilight, I don't know what to say. There's so, so much confusion been produced by _Twilight of the Gods_ that I really have to be left thinking this is a total failure of editing. And it wouldn't be the first time -- Illaoi's colour story is absolutely loaded with typos to the extent that I don't even think anyone looked at it. There's no real punctuation in dialogue minus periods, it's a total mess. Players have been totally turned off by the nebulous nature of the work. If you're a lore fan like me, then you're going to put the time in to understand the differences here... but players are _already confused_ by the dual nature of Zoe and the Aspect of Twilight, and how much variation there is in the individual Aspects' control over their hosts. Tack onto this a total lack of apparent scale (Zoe spent a thousand years in different dimensions -- why can't she just open a portal and throw Ascended into a far off realm without Runeterra's magic and just leave them there? why can't Aurelion Sol just obliterate every single one of the darkin? why is the moon invoked to render Ascended mortal when it's stated in _Where Icathia Once Stood_ that Ascended die and bleed?) I dunno. All I'm seeing all over the internet isn't rife speculation -- it's total, overwhelming confusion and dissent. I really like the basic conceit of what we received, but the execution is dense, swollen with capital nouns, scares away the players who could get on board with the lore and make it easier for writers to produce more content. I won't go into how absolutely disappointed so many people are that Varus was given placeholder lore which was swapped out for something else sooner than that. How can we be expected to read deeply into lore when the writers are providing incomplete content? Is it just being made up as you go along? This entire fiasco is really, really disheartening to me. Yes, you made the darkin cool. Yes, some players seem pretty happy. But the constant inconsistency, inability to focus on the actual champions, is not useful. It is alienating. It is going to harm your ability to produce content that is not tethered to gameplay because _players will tune this out_. Best wishes, A deeply sad fan

: Two main things there. The first is that there's a lot of other stuff vying for the time of other possible designers too, whether it's midseason followup, other champion updates, balance or whatever. While Lissandra's passive isn't great, it's not as urgent an issue as a range of other things (Lissandra players will be sick of hearing that understandably, but it's still a trade off of what to work on). The second reason is that the lack of a satisfying passive on Lissandra rests on me, given I put her existing one there during her original design. I'd like to be involved in cleaning up that past failure to deliver as a result if possible.
Was it the same situation for the recent Q revert to Syndra (who you designed), or Ziggs' new W effect (who you also designed)? :)

: I feel bad for not being able to give more info, too. We can share each other's misery... {{sticker:cass-cry}}
I know this isn't the right place, but it's driving me crazy and I need to talk to someone about it. In Illaoi's colour story, _The Burden_, there are so, so many grammar errors. The main one - which occurs every single time it can - is a lack of any punctuation to close out speech marks. "It should be like this," he said. "But it looks like this" he said. Is this something you guys can fix? It's so minor but it makes her colour story - the main source of information we have on her - look unedited. I don't even know how it wasn't caught. Any sort of reply would be really appreciated :(

Hey there. I get that this is off-topic, but a lot of us have been waiting a while for an answer. Syndra, an Ionian champion, hasn't received an interaction with another champion since Xerath (minus God Fist Lee Sin), and there have been so many recent Ionian champions. What's going on with her? Do you guys have any intentions? Really really hoping for some kind of response :(

Thoughts on Syndra right now? You guys mentioned you were looking into changes to differentiate her play pattern from other burst mages, and she still seems to be struggling - even with the AP item pass. Any update? {{champion:134}}

Although I'll agree that Zoe's undoubtedly a frustrating champion, is the change to her Q (especially hitting her ability to waveclear) really where power has to come from? These changes are huge, but that's the only one which makes the champion feel significantly worse to me. Cooldown nerfs are alright, but having the uniformity of her damage, and losing the ability to clear the back line consistently early, feels like shit. What are the chances that all of these ship, instead of just a few? And in the event that all of them ship - will you guys address the fact that something was going really well that a champion (and their users) have to endure patch through patch of nerfs because the design team made mistakes?

Hey Meddler. Would you be able to find out what the current status of Xin's new splash art is?
Meddler (NA)
: We'll be taking another look at manaflow band, what's currently in testing on the PBE is very unlikely to ship.
I truly, truly feel that it should be weaker than present, but with a lower cooldown. 75 seconds feels _way too high_. Wondering if you'd be able to comment on whether or not we could get a "Time remaining" for Manaflow Band? If not, then a "time remaining:" on hover in the little rune page like Demolish has would be appreciated too

I know you've been hesitant to say, but it'd be really great to have some more specific information for the AP item update (especially considering it looks likely it's around 3 patches away now, instead of just 2). Are there plans to change the Hextech items? What about Liandry's? And, with the new item coming in, what role is it expected to fulfill that isn't presently met?

Hey, guys! Regarding Syndra, Meddler mentioned in his Gameplay Thoughts earlier today that, were the bug fixes not enough to pick Syndra out of the gutter (Phreak's words), you guys were thinking about making her core gameplay more unique and differentiated from other mages. I was wondering if you had discussed something in particular, as Meddler mentioned you had plans to follow up with her for 8.2

Out of interest: are the champions who are lacking that keystone (Camille, juggernauts) really champions who want to invest in the Resolve tree? I feel significantly worse without that attack speed, or the attack damage. High-ELO Camille mains seems to be choosing Comet right now because they prefer the AD they get from that tree. Thoughts on that new keystone's place and whether it really fits the champions you're aiming to help? What are those champions?
: Just wondering when we'll be getting updates on Battlecast Illaoi
Meddler (NA)
: No plans in the near future. We may end up nerfing the Sorcery style bonus, or Comet (one of his best keystones) in 7.24b though, which would mean we should assess him for a potential buff if so (he's not overperforming like a lot of other Sorc/Comet users are).
I'm thinking Malzahar and Xerath, but any comment on who he other overperformers are by your estimation?

Is Sleep duration reduced by Merc Treads? It isn't in the description of merc treads as one of the things being reduced. If not, why isn't it reduced by them?

Curious to hear: d'you guys think Syndra is suffering from the new runes internally, or do you think she's alright at present? It feels like she could use a little buff to help her out (a la Taliyah's base stat buffs).

A while back you mentioned Ryze changes aimed at lowering his pro play presence and strengthening him for solo queue. The Galio buffs that hit PBE recently really seem to hit that niche, and I was wondering if it's practical to get the same designer on Ryze? I don't think increasing the AP ratio on his root was enough to make his kit buffable in other areas. Especially considering he's a champion that doesn't build that much AP.

I wonder if you'd be able to comment on something I've seen a lot of discussion about recently - that a fair number of mages find themselves somewhat unhappy with the keystones in the Sorcery tree? Are you personally looking for someone like Syndra to use Meteor Strike or Phase Rush, given that her E makes that somewhat impractical (on PBE, people are often punted away from the Meteor, even when stunned)? Or someone like Orianna, whose ability to proc Phase Rush very reliably makes me nervous? Taliyah is another, of course, but generally some mages feel left out, and I expect to see a lot dedicating to the Domination tree and losing a lot from it because sorcery is obviously intended to be better. Some other spells -- Lethal Tempo -- just FEEL better than Meteor does. **Any chance you guys could do some under-the-hood work to make sure that enemies punted by a Taliyah W, or a Syndra E, are correctly honed by the meteor?** At present it feels *so* bad to miss because of your own spells. Throwing a Taliyah E out against someone becomes a worse move when you just want the slow to help with a W.
