Instead her voice gets just a little of a metallic tone and sometimes it goes away entirely so you can hear her unaltered voice. That's so well done and I love it! Hey SpecterVonBaren!! Thanks so much :3 Really appreciate the kind words! I had an idea to try and automate the robot processing in and out of the clean voice based on our talent's voice intensity. The higher the intensity in volume, the more the robotic elements would poke out. As she dropped back down into her normal range in the recordings, the processing would die away. However, the story behind the processing is an interesting one. Ill go ahead and be completely forward with you and spill the beans. Even thought I knew what I wanted to try before I started, I landed on this voice processing not by 100% understanding exactly what I was doing... **Warning: I am totally about to geek out here**, so if you are curious or an audio nerd... continue on... To get a little technical, and if you're and audio person you'll probably follow a bit better, you utilize a dummy track of the VO that doesnt play into your main signal. This dummy track controls a compressor that pulls the volume down on your clean voice track based on how loud the dummy track gets. Every time the dummy track peaks over a set volume, the compressor kicks in and pulls the clean voice volume down. Then on your robot style processing, you use a gate plug-in that is controlled by when the previously mentioned compressor plug-in kicks in. When the gate opens, the robot voice comes through and blends with the clean voice over. Cue hours of tweaking settings and parameters until it blends realistically. To execute all of this it can get a little complicated - especially when you combine how to make the robot voice (it actually caused a lot of really interesting technical secondary issues), but what's really neat about this technique is that you are not combining the two voices without at least subtracting from one. If you just had the robot voice kick in without turning the clean track down, you would have wildly loud voice over with the two played together, and quiet voice when it was just the clean. This technique automates this process for you and creates a fairly seamless blend of the two voices, and its done by utilizing the natural performance of the talent to do so. Sweeeet. I have to keep some of you in suspense and keep the recipe for the "robot voice" a mystery, but the real meat to this technique is how to blend the two voices. ;P The reason why it was an accident was because I literally had no clue on actually how to do this as I was attempting to do it haha. I literally just bumbled through things that I thought seemed reasonable to achieve the end result of this processing chain idea. Once it seemed to work, I walked myself backwards through the chain and tweaked out the stuff that didnt seem to be hitting the mark. I even forgot how I set it all up initially after coming back to it a couple days later, and had to get another sound designer here to walk through my own processing chain to make sure I hadnt lost the initial idea in a mass of routing spiderweb. It really is a testament to experimentation and pushing yourself outside of the box and comfort zone, you can come up with some pretty weird stuff! Thanks a lot for props - hope you enjoyed the explanation of how it was made!!
: We want to boost our enjoyment of the awesome LoL audio and champions' lore
> [{quoted}](name=SuDdEnPSyChOtiC,realm=EUNE,application-id=6kFXY1kR,discussion-id=6Zp247J9,comment-id=,timestamp=2016-09-09T07:27:31.752+0000) > > Dear Riot ,and LoL community > ... I am moving and auto-ing I want tristana to sing ,I wanna hear her Ctrl +1 Ctrl+2 etc. go off randomly all the time. Atleast make it optional for players who want it... Hey SuDdEnPSyChOtiC! First off, thanks for writing in with ideas on how we can make the game better! We try and read as many of players suggestions as we can - The heart of your idea is awesome. Inject more personality into the champion by having our favorite lines fire off throughout the game. It's a great suggestion - lemme see if I can shed some light on a few things the audio discipline in collaboration with the narrative discipline tries to accomplish with VO. 1. Gameplay supporting VO: We are currently shifting into a direction where contextual VO is a highlight of gameplay. We want the VO of the champion to reflect what you do in-game. Therefore, most VO is purposeful as opposed to random. 2. Expanding immersive VO experience: What this means for us is working with game designers and engineers to try and best develop a system for VO where we can really make some cool stuff happen with dialog between champs. We want to make the field "come alive" with interactive dialog that is not riddled with "conditional playback" complexities (i.e. you have to be within 500 feet, after using an item, in-between 4 and 5pm on a Monday, while its raining = play VO). We want these new types of VO implementation to feel natural and immersive. We are working on new tech and playback functionality with every new champion release! However, the goal is to hopefully re-build our system to implement dialog and develop a new, more flexible and robust, system to literally make as many options available to us as the developers and to you as players to experience your fav champs dialog as possible. 3. Allowing foundational playback functionality of VO to be modified by the player is hard: But not impossible. However, a lot of the functionality of audio playback is "hard-coded" to the point where there is the way you implement the audio, and that's the extent of the flexibility. Changing it must be made at the developer level, and literally can not be made at the player level. There are definitely options we can make available - and were continuing to try and figure out how to make more things than just volume level available to the players. All this being said, we hope to continue to try and expand and develop VO for champions that strike at the heart of your suggestion. We are working on injecting more personality of these champs into the experience of the game more effectively, efficiently, and contextually. Keep playing the game and new champions, and you should see changes being made all the time to new and old champs! And thanks for using my website to initially contact me! :D Good to see its getting use - I sure need to update that thing with content!
GerAvos (EUW)
: Is her auto attack sound the same as vayne's? If yes, will it be changed?
Definitely not the same as vayne :P
IHavePipi (EUNE)
: Wow, I actually did get in time! 1) I love the idea of making a lore-based skin, and even more the idea of having new lines with it (just like High Noon Jhin did!). Any chances that when the next champions arrive, they'll also have lore-based skins and even bonus lines? 2) I'm curious.. if we got a Freljord skin for Talyah.. what do you think about Noxus based skin, of what she looked like if she wouldnt escape and join noxus unwillingly? is it something we could get at some point, or making one lore-based skin is enough? 3) On what age Taliyah left home? 4) Is there any champion from Noxus that we know of, and was involved in capturing Taliyah? 5) I really really really think her promo music is the best! the vocals and sounds in this one were pretty amazing. I really could'nt think about better one. How you chose if a champion' theme shall be song, melody, or maybe just vocals like you did here? 6) Last but not least, how brought you to the name Taliyah? Were there other names you considered? Thanks! Taliyah rocks! [;
Hey IHavePipi! We had a hunch the VO talent could sing - so we did a vocal test during her final script record. She nailed it, so we had her come in and do the login theme as well!
: Questions for Kitten, C3Sound, and Hdot: (Kitten)1. You've said she's 16 now, so how old was she when she met Yasuo? 2. Do you think that it's possible for Taliyah to be able to 'weave' Malphite? 3. How good is she at skipping stones? (C3Sound) 1. Do you think you can give us an inside on what items/props was used to create the SFX for her abilities? (Hdot)1. Aside from Lifeguard Taliyah, has there been any other skin ideas that you've thought of or have considered from fans? Thanks for your time.
Hey BioTest! Check the story I posted - its up near the top!
: thanks for your input. It's not that sound design is uninteresting, it's just so out of the realm of my expertise that I wouldn't even know what to ask. And that is certainly an interesting story!
I definitely understand the nebulous nature of it - hence why I posted the story without provocation haha. Sometimes you just have to give you craft a little bump before people start asking questions!
: I saw this room on one of Veritasium's videos. It's pretty cool that you guys were able to use it. Are you planning on using it for future champs?
I would highly recommend any sound designer to record in these rooms if they have the opportunity. It is definitely niche, as you are limited to what you can actually do in the rooms - like you couldnt go in and record destroying a table or anything. And you sit on top of a mesh floor where the mesh is more of like large waffle squares (see picture) so you could easily drop things through the holes. So recording material that isnt messy, big enough not to fall through the floor, but small enough where the detail matters to record at a hotter level - thats more of what you are looking at using it for - really clean wooshes are great too, swinging around pool noodles and bamboo sticks. Reminds me of the same day where we went into an echo chamber and I hit myself directly in the eye with a stretchy rubber slap-hand toy thing as it swung around my head. There is a video of it. Its pretty funny.
kipp14 (NA)
: Thank you so much for this. Could you do a more detailed post on the engineering blog on some of your experiences doing audio for the game?
Ill be doing a lot of dev bloggy kind of stuff on my website - c3sound.com - which ill shop around the forums. I have little stories from the majority of projects that people might be into.
: I've herd that if you stay in there long enough it will drive you crazy.Did any of you guys start getting uncomfortable with all the silence in there.
For a sound designer, its very refreshing. We listen to sounds over and over and over again every day - which we enjoy - but to hear absolutely nothing every once in awhile is like a city-dweller stepping out into the forest and having a deep breath.
Bakatar (NA)
: If you don't mind me asking, how did you end up doing sound design? Like what were the steps that took you there and why? It's a fascinating field.
To be really short-story-like on this answer... ill nutshell it: I sucked at sports as a kid so I picked up guitar, wanted to be famous guitar player (giggles), went to college for music production, fell in love with engineering, realized music industry was extremely unstable, studied sound for film and games, busted my ass freelancing for 2.5 years, Riot hired me!
patmax17 (EUW)
: Nice story, thanks for sharing! I made a post with a few questions, and I must admit, I forgot about sound! It's just something not as blatand as art or story or mechanics, and I think it often gets (undeservedly!) overshadowed by them. I don't really have any questions, but one thing I want to say; one of the things that hit me (pun intended) most when I first saw Taliyah, was the sound on her autoattack: it's just so, _soooo_ satisfying! It really delivers this sense of hard, strong impact, it's not just a "_tap_", it a nice, full "_stock_". The freljord skins pushes a lot of right buttons with me (i have a very soft spot for ice-manipulating magic), but I'd be in doubt to get her because the autoattack sound on her base is just so good :D Also, I love love love her login theme!
Thanks so much! A lot of the auto attack was inspired by Lissandra's AAs. Until I started designing the attacks, I actually had Lissandras in the kit as a placeholder. The composer Sebastien Najand here at Riot did the login music! He is a bad ass.
: cuddles for sound designers! (>\*3*)>
: Champion Q&A: Taliyah, the Stoneweaver
No one asked for this, however it makes for a neat story. So ill tell it anyway ;P A sound designer's job is to create a wide enough sonic thematic palette that conveys each of the champion skills in a unique way. This helps with game-play clarity, adds to the uniqueness of the champion, keeps it from becoming repetitive or boring, etc etc. That said, rocks are rocks. Rocks sound like other rocks - for the most part. However, such elements like size, density, shape, and other characteristics of rocks can create a different feel when hit or thrown or destroyed or used to suppress giant panicked wildebeests... a story for another time... But that wasnt enough for Taliyah - Taliyah had a more refined version of rock. "Woven" rock was her deal, and the task at hand was to try and figure out what that really sounded like. Here is the cool part (commence nerd out): A few of us took a trip up to UCLA's Anecoic Chamber. If you dont know what an anechoic chamber is, read up on it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anechoic_chamber Its basically a "dead" room - one with "no" reflections or reverberations. It's crazy stuff. Stay in there too long and you can hear your blood rushing through your arteries. What better place to record really detailed stuff. Recording really small sounds and capturing them in a way that sounds big is a challenge. One basic technique is to crank your microphone pre-amp so you can record a really small sound at a really high volume - recording all of the detail at a hotter level - making the sound "bigger" initially to work with. However, a lot of crap happens when you do this - when you raise the initial recording level you also raise the noise floor of the room which usually ends up with a nasty hum/hiss/buzz in your recording. This is why a dead room _rocks _ for this kind of recording... So I packed up a bunch of tile for bathroom walls that I bought at home depot, showed up with these other Riot sound design cats at UCLA, and recorded all of Taliyah's more detailed building blocks inside of an almost completely dead room. The recordings turned out awesome - and you can hear some of these sounds sprinkled in and throughout her kit (Q - on her casts of the shards, W - on the directional input sound, E - as the 4 waves fall out into place, R - its somewhere in there buried beneath the madness) Here are a couple pics from the recording: http://c3sound.com/wp-content/uploads/DevPics/AnechoicChamber_2016/rec2.jpg http://c3sound.com/wp-content/uploads/DevPics/AnechoicChamber_2016/rec1.jpg
: WHAT ARE U SMOKING I AM TOWER CAMPING AND HAVE Backed SEVEN TIMES IN 5 LVLS GET YOUR CRACK OF THE TABLE AND NERF
My table is definitely not cracked, good sir. Unless Illaoi sat on it. Then it might be.
Chesha (NA)
: 1. What were some of the most memorable struggles y'all faced with her kit? 2. Funniest moment during development? 3. How did y'all go about deciding her color scheme? Any trouble there? 4. What were some other possibilities for her release skin? (or was it the same through the whole process?) 5. What would Illaoi's favorite genre of books be? Thanks guys for the hard work this year! The champs have been awesome! Can't wait to see what y'all create next! :D
1. First time I put sounds on her tentacles and then ulted in a team fight. Almost blew out my eardrums. 2. Jokes on what do 5 tentacles say to the face. And how the audio team called her Brangus, or Aioli, for the entire production cycle. Why wont it let me number this 5 it keeps changing it to 3 thanks auto-format. Science Squid-tion
Alkyan (NA)
: In a basketball game could a set of Illaoi's tentacles out-dunk the dunkmaster?
Only if they are wearing Air Jordans. Specifically the pump model.
Solash (EUW)
: So the Void bringer skin is pretty dank. What other ideas/concepts for skins were discussed for Illaoi during her development?
I tried to pitch Cross-Fit Trainer Illaoi. It was quickly shot down.
: How does she feel about being able to rip Souls out of people as easily if not better than Mordekaiser?^^
Morde is too busy ripping guitar licks to practice ripping souls. ... Sometimes I think his band Pentakill is just all he ever thinks about. He could at least take out the trash once in awhile. Never washes the dishes either. Psh.
: Please give me your best ideas for a dish themed around Illaoi. Thanks. :]
Reliched Sausentcles with Nagarlic Burbonoros sauce.
Myles JT (NA)
: I know this is pretty early to be asking this, but have you guys had any thought at all about a Dunkmaster skin for her, because of her W and R animations, or a sports trainer skin, because of general personality for wanting to teach others and Nagakaborus being a ball?
How about... WACKY WAVING INFLATABLE FLAILING ARM TENTACLE WOMAN SKIN :D
Dooomba (NA)
: Also Illaoi, What does the Nagakabouros know about Nautilas?
Naut a thing.... *mic drop* OK ok. I heard they were in the same water aerobics class.
Dooomba (NA)
: Illaoi, Volley-Ball or Basket-Ball?
1 person volleyball team. Too much movement in basketball for stationary tentacles.
: Smooth or Crunchy peanut butter? Does she like Sona music? Pentakill or DJ? When did she first meet Nagakabouros? Edit: When can we expect her lore/camp page here?
Crunchy - because it sounds like when she hits people in the face with her relic. She probably hasnt been exposed to any of Sona/Penta music - but my guess is she would jam on some DJ. They met through a dating app.
: I think I am going to miss the laugh Gangplank does when he ults
he still has his laugh - the video was shot with no VO
: Ok Riot, I'm gonna be honest, Gangplank's current Q sound is my favorite sound in league and it has been since season 1 and i'm gonna be super sad when it changes. I was wondering if you might keep his Q sound after his rework. It would make me as happy as a clam. Rito plz. {{champion:41}}
The pistol mechanism was kept completely intact! The rest, unfortunately, had to be raised to current quality standards of the game. A lot went into finding out what exactly was iconic about the sound - and after a lot of deliberation, the pistol's mechanism and the satisfaction of last hitting with the Q were the two main things that we felt needed to stay.
: honestly i'm excited for this new update and as long as he still laughs after ulting, i'll be fine with it
: Please tell me he still laughs when he ults.
: Champion Update: Gangplank
Hey all - just for clarification: His voice efforts for eating the oranges and the laugh on his ult is in the VO. The VO was disabled during the shooting of this video. All your favorite things are still there - I made sure to keep them! ;P
TŒŒMØ (NA)
: The update looks interesting, but a few things worry me. 1: The audio in this new update isn't nearly as funny as his old audio. I loved the orange eating sounds before, and his global laugh when he ults. 2: Taking the passive and active damage off of his E and replacing it with a keg reduces his Q damage, which reduces the viability of taking all armor penetration runes and radically reduces his crit damage / early parrrlay damage as a result. I just hope that good ol' "Critplank" will still be k' after this update
Hey! Fear not! His efforts for eating the oranges and the laugh on his ult is in the VO. The VO was disabled during the shooting of this video. All your favorite things are still there - I made sure to keep them!
: I'm not complaining here, but I believe he's afraid of Ryze still going for Frozen Heart, even with the 30% cdr buff at 16. Is that buff there for players to think more carefully about wasted stats or something? Love the new Ryze btw, and the vfx are just really sweet
Sound (Audio/SFX/sound effects) feedback pls :P
baetoevn (NA)
: Hi, so my friends and I and some people don't like his passive at all! Don't make him scale off with mana please! Same with kassidin! Don't make champs based off mana please! It's not fun. :(
Hey Zylok! Make an individual post for design requests - you'll have much better luck with pulling attention from the designers if you do so - but if you have sound feedback, leave it here!
: Champion Update: Ryze heads to PBE
Hey all! Hope you like the new sounds! Let me know if you have any feedback after a couple games on PBE. Feel free to hit me up on here or directly on twitter @riotc3sound I'll be checking up on comments from you all regularly!

Already done - t'was a bug. (It will go out with next patch)
Siachi (NA)
: I hope you guys can give Kassadin a new Voice Over: I'm still kind of miffed that Alistar, who has a total of FIVE lines for moving and attacking, didn't get a new VO with his update, but that's besides the point. Plus there's the thing where he still has his Silence joke despite not having a silence anymore, and how he has ONE line that even uses the word 'void' (And it's not even The Void), despite so much of his character having to do with The Void. Also, just a suggestion: As long as he has a way to interrupt channels, he should totally get a line for interrupting Malzahar's Nether Grasp, like when he 'frees' an allied champion from Malz ult. Plays up the rivalry a bit, don't you think? EDIT: I hope this doesn't come off as a stand-offish "Do this or I won't be happy" sort of thing. I just think Kassadin can be an interesting character with a proper VO, but his current VO doesn't really give much to go off of. And I trust you guys will know what you're doing when it comes to his art and models and the like.

Hey Siachi! A lot of time goes into writing the backstory, bio, script, the in-game text, recording the VO, editing, processing, localizing, casting and recording in 15+ languages around the world... If we were to do this with every champion we wanted, we wouldn't be putting out a new update but once every so often. So while we take our larger projects through this longer pipeline, we cant take every project champion update chooses to touch through the process. That said, we arent ruling out VO for future projects just yet. We are deliberating what can take the longer road for the upcoming year. Thanks! - C3
: Just make sure that when you release it, the slider is set to the pre-patch default position. Don't fuck up again like you did with the 3x louder pings on the ping slider release. A frequency slider is a LOT harder to manually tweak to find the default position yourself (as opposed to a volume slider)
> Just make sure that when you release it, the slider is set to the pre-patch default position. > > Don't fuck up again like you did with the 3x louder pings on the ping slider release. > > A frequency slider is a LOT harder to manually tweak to find the default position yourself (as opposed to a volume slider) My assumption (since I dont have context to this particular addition) is that upon implementation there was an added headroom, louder than previous default, to the max volume of the pings. Then the max volume was set as the new default. It's always a possibility that when providing new features, blips can occur. Be nice Falkenjeff :) We are trying to address everyone's desires with audio flexibility.
: I think that an enemy voice slider would help, maybe just a voice slider in general like the op is suggesting. i wouldn't use it much as i really enjoy the voices, but i can see how some people would want it. i would much rather it be an option, opposed to you turning down how often VO lines play. i really enjoy the new sion voice and love hearing all of the champions talk a lot, so im very much against; "upping the no-play probability on VO events" without an option to not do that.
> I think that an enemy voice slider would help, maybe just a voice slider in general like the op is suggesting. i wouldn't use it much as i really enjoy the voices, but i can see how some people would want it. > > i would much rather it be an option, opposed to you turning down how often VO lines play. > i really enjoy the new sion voice and love hearing all of the champions talk a lot, so im very much against; "upping the no-play probability on VO events" without an option to not do that. Having a slider for that kind of probability modification might take awhile - As Eno states, the feasibility is rough based on how our audio system runs. But we can definitely look into it! Thanks King Dellron!

: Speech Frequency Option
> The new Sion sounds great, but much like many other champions (Twitch and Aatrox just to name a couple), I'm growing annoyed by how much he talks. > > If we could get a slider to either increase or decrease the intervals of champ speak, I would greatly appreciate that. Sometimes I just wanna focus on the fields of battle without hearing "I'll drink from your skull" ad nauseum. Hey all, Just throwing an idea out there - **Would an enemy VO slider be something to look into? ** If I am understanding the issue correctly, its that you would rather not hear other players VO as often. It is true that new champs have more dialog, therefore seemingly talk more often across every action they do. In terms of the champion *you *are playing. we can look into toning that down with upping the no-play probability on VO events.
IFraserAu (OCE)
: Global sounds effects and their presence in-game.
> Ultimately, I think that global sound effects can have their place within the game apart from just being global skill identifiers. I believe there is a great opportunity to further project the idea of a living, breathing Summoners Rift that, whilst housing mystery and magic, is a terrifying battle ground of legends. What are some of you opinions/ideas regarding the possible further incorporation of map-wide sound effects and how would you see best to utilise them in order to add to the atmosphere of Summoners Rift? Hey IFraserAU! Totally agree. In terms of the new SRU map events, keep an eye on it. You may get surprised :P --- No promises though! Gameplay first! However, in terms of champion skills. The global sound effect evaluation usually takes into consideration the scope of the effect. Nocturnes Ult can reach people across the map, therefore all players on the map should hear it. Sion's Ult gives him quite a long range sprint. You dont know the direction hes coming from, but you know he could be coming. This adds to the tension created by his skill. But take Graves's Ult. It has a limited range. No real reason for the map to know he shot his ult. Ultimately, it comes down to Gameplay. Are people getting too "tipped off" by hearing a global sound? If you hear Baron roar, will this be too much of a gameplay indicator that hes there and remove the ability to Baron sneak steal? Etc. Etc. Thanks for the feedback! We will definitely be looking at more global sounds when applicable and when we can support Gameplay in a positive way!

: **"NOXUS!"** Literally the sheer power, rage and intensity of how Sion screams the name Noxus made me legitimately frightened when I first heard it. I love lines like this, because this feels like something with actual passion behind it, and I love it. Also: **"Not yet, I can hang on."** The writers deserve so much credit, because they made Sion a character that's a killing machine, but someone that actually has a really interesting and complex character. To me, this quote, and the ones like it, are some of the best.

: I have found some lines are able to work outside of the Ascension game mode **Upon beginning a game of Ascension:** "Make this hurt." "They will feel pain they've never imagined." "No suffering is too great." "All will suffer as I have!" As far as the ascensed buff-related quotes, why not tie those in for Baron buff or Vilemaw as well? It does power one up, so I don't see why some of these lines can't be used so as long as they don't have the word "ascended" or anything related to that word

The most satisfying of any champion that has ever been created to date (Though viktors augment laser is pretty damn awesome and his Q lichbane attack proc). > > you've outdone yourselves > > Now create me battlecast skarner Holy cow, Skaarjj! What a compliment! Thank you very much. I can tell ya what though, he wouldnt sound nearly as good if I didnt have the team behind me giving me feedback and direction. Our audio team relies on giving each other very honest and candid feedback. With it, it allows us to try and push the limits of our current skill level and hopefully ultimately grow in our craft. But hearing that people are satisfied with our work is amazing. And thank you for letting us know!
: I really like the sound and music in this game

: Quote Updates for Older Champions
> A lot of older champions have very few quotes and no interactions. Some are slated for relaunch, but others aren't. > > For example, lore- and gameplay-wise, Janna is in a pretty good place. However, she has very limited quotes. Furthermore, her quotes don't reflect where she comes from. According to her lore, she's an orphan from Zaun's slums who learned air magic and is now a reformer of Zaun. None of her quotes reflect that. Not even a cursory "The winds of change shall reach even Zaun". > > Janna isn't the only champion that could do with a QU. Zilean, Alistar, Blitzcrank and many, many others have way less quotes than modern champions or reworks like Sivir. Are Quote Updates (independent of Gameplay or Visual Updates) something Riot is planning to do? Hey CShakes! See my reply here for a potential answer to your question! Lemme know if you have any questions! http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/sound-music/31jmuNrT-renektons-new-vo-lines-and-new-vo-lines-in-general?comment=0000
: Renekton's new VO lines (And new VO lines in general)
> Why aren't they used outside of ascension? I know they sound sort of different than his old quotes, but I still think they fit. > > Without Ascension in place, they're just lost and forgotten. Any particular reason these can't be added to his full repertoire? > > I'm also curious as to whether or not Riot would ever to 'Audio Updates'. Similar to what they did with Cass, she basically got a full new VO with her texture update and kit rework. I think this is something they should do more often, with more champions, because not every champion is gonna get a VU. Even recently released champions like Lucian and Jinx don't even have half the lines that newer champs and skins have, which isn't a bad thing (Riot's advanced since then), but I feel they, and other champions who won't get VUs, should be updated. Hey Crewx, With Mode specific VO, some of the lines made for the mode would not work out-of-mode context. However, there were additional taunts that were held over to his full kit. If the new VO is not mode specific, we will use it for the full kit. However, I will ask our narrative team to take a look and see if there are any lines that were held to be reconsidered for full kit! In terms of the audio updates, ill jump in as I am on the Champion Update team. The Voice Over process starts with our Narrative Team. So starting from the top, the first step involved is to have our Narrative Team write a script and have it vetted by the team and writers. Some older champions require far more attention to lore and background story than others, as well as possibly needing to find a new Voice Over actor (Example: Sion, Karthus, etc). The process can be slightly faster if we use the same actor. So the actual content to record needs to be written first. And while we have dedicated writers that update old champions VO sets, they are on the Champion Update team. These writer(s) are responsible for a great task of diving deep into the champion and really exploring the champ. This takes awhile. And this timeline works with our current Champion Update team release cadence. Additionally, we have to record the talent. So once the final script starts to form, we have been auditioning for the part, having an exploratory recording session with the chosen actor/actress, evaluating the direction of the voice as a team, and then recording the full script once its finalized. Once we have the voice recorded, then I will take the voice and process it (if it needs processing), edit and master the finalized files, This takes quite a bit of time. This amount of time also fits perfectly into our release cadence of updated champions. Additionally, the script has to be translated into over 15 different languages, casted by a region-specific actor, recorded, and files also processed - all from studios across the world. *Then *we can get the champions voice into the game. By this time, ill have been working on the same champion's sound effects! Given this lengthy process to update Voice Over, we prioritize updating the VO on champions released by the Champion Update team. The Casseopia VO you heard was updated as we already had her in for the Shurima event. Sometimes we can bundle champion updated VO sets with event recording sessions, letting us achieve a new set of VO for an older champion before their time for an update occurs. We love updating champion VO, however its quite a lengthy process as you can see. So when the Champion Update team chooses to do so, we usually give priority to the heavy hitting projects that will provide the most impact and value to you all. Once the Champion Update team revolves around completing all the current must update champions, the eye will turn on the more-recent yet needing-love champions! Thanks for your feedback CrewX! - C3
: Sion Champion Update Q&A [COMPLETED]
I'll chime in here on the **VO **decision. Sion before the champion update, while charming, was thematically thin. The "ambiguous" nature of the old Sion lent itself to a very flexible understanding of what the champion should sound like... Ending up with somewhat of a comical decision in making him sound the way he did. What the Champion Update team strives to do is not only up the quality bar of these champions in all aspects, but to deliver what we believed to be the original intention of the champion. The original intention, aside from the comical VO lines, was never for Sion to become less-than-serious champion. Artistic Reason: Old Sion VO is different in quality and content than the other old traditional skin VO. Mainly, because the old VO is so drastically different than the new that we couldn't retain the feel of new Sion if we used it. Even from today's skins standards, if old Sion's voice never existed and we were to make a skin - the VO choice that old Sion has wouldn't even be considered unless it was thematically appropriate. Making a skin that would look like old Sion does not thematically connect with the old Voice. Tech Reason: We developed a very special type of VO tech to use with Sion. It allows the expanded script, what was few lines now over 200, to take advantage of the tech. Unfortunately, the old VO wouldn't work with this tech. We made the decisions on the back of an artistic and technical foundation. (IMO) I think it would be cool if this opened up an ideation for a Body Builder Sion and explore it with a more relevant VO set! Old Sion VO will live on in our hearts, memories, and YouTube videos. And, in my opinion, is something that old Sion players will all remember as "Back in the day when Sion sounded ~*insert heartwarming memory adjective here*.~"
