Even if it doesn't define them, it's still a part of who they are. It affects how they interacts with the world. It affects how the world interacts them. They would have to do things in a different way than those without disability. Regardless of whether it's a disability they got recently or one they had to live for their whole life, it still has an affect on them. Having a disability or disease might not define X character, but it sure does define how X character interact with the world, with other characters. It defines what X character can or can not do. It creates limitations for the character to overcome. It might not define X character personality, but it's a core part of their background, their history, their life. ________________ And guess what? With fictional characters, all this should have an affect of how the writer(s) write X Character. You don't just give a character a random disease or disability & not write around that in some way. You don't just write them the exact same way as perfectly healthy characters. Then what was the damn point of making them disable or giving a disease first place??? And before you think I'm saying "hurr durr mainly focus on their disability when writing them", I'm not. Unless that is the main focus of the story or scene, don't put the disability in the spotlight, just remember that's it's there. How? Subtly. Use small details to help the reader figure it out without jamming it in our faces or stopping the main plot for it. Like I said, having a disability or disease affects how X character interacts with the world & vice versa. Use these interactions when writing for them. "Oh hey, X character isn't talking. Oh hey, X character is using sign language. I think X character might be mute." "Oh hey, X character's friend is describing a picture for them. Oh hey, X character is sliding their fingers acoss a brail book. Oh hey, X Character is using a cane when they walk. I think X character might be blind." Use small, subtle details to show they are disabled. When it comes to written characters, people become attached to those small details. Whether it be simply because fan thinks how X character does something is cute. Or some fans know what X character is going through & can relate. Soon, they would see those details as a core part of X Character. How do I know? Because I've seen it in other fandoms. ______________ Being mute may not define {{champion:37}}'s character. But it does define how she interacts with the world & how the world interacts with her. It defines what she can do & how she does it.

: Simple: Her being mute is a core part of her character. Every character have a few details that not only set them apart from the rest of the cast, but add to, if not define, their character. To many people, Sona being mute is one of the core part of what defines Sona for them. Giving her the ability to speak strips her of a core trait. Can imagine what it would be like if Lee Sin was no longer blind? Before anyone says anything, God Fist is an AU skin (not canon) I don't see the problem with Sona being mute. She can still communicate with others using various other methods (sign language, writing, body language & facial expressions). Just because it's a fantasy world, that doesn't mean everything & everyone has to be perfect. That would be boring. Characters will be different & there are many ways to be different. One of those ways are various disabilities. Well, that my belief on the "out of universe" reason. _______________ In universe, we don't know. Maybe she simply doesn't have any desire for it. And she is perfectly fine with being mute Maybe it's something that can't be fixed magically. Like it's the result of some dark curse. Or maybe she isn't really mute & just choose not to speak for whatever reason. Or simply she can't find someone who can fix it. Assuming the old lore is anything to go by (probably not, but whatever), she lives in Demacia now & there aren't a lot of mages who could perform magical surgery on her vocal chords. And if they are, they either wouldn't openly admit it or don't know how too.
