: For some reason Riot doesn't like doing these. Its kind of frustrating that they are so unwilling to ever call a Voice Actor back for anything. They basically only do it for Legendary/Ultimate skins, which is why Lux got her VO; just a good opportunity since she was already there for Elementalist. (I've heard that they did the same for MF, but didn't go through due to poor reception). They randomly had Jinx and Ziggs' VAs back for Odyssey which was a nice surprise (Kayn's VA was already back for the Legendary skin, but that was nice, too). I'm just thinking about things like the way Blizzard will quite frequently add lines to Overwatch Heroes whenever a new event rolls around or they get new skins. I don't expect Riot to do things with THAT high of a frequency, but SOMETHING more would be nice.

I don't expect Riot to do things with THAT high of a frequency, but SOMETHING more would be nice. It has nothing to do with "not liking" this idea. We LOVE the idea of updating old champs. Usually, we book talent for 4 hour chunks of studio time (guild minimums). While this sounds like a lot of time with an actor in the booth, it actually goes by suuuper fast, with the first hour or so being time for the director (we have a rotating roster of wonderful VO directors), actor, and writer to hone in on the character and find the voice. Then it's three hours (with breaks) to get the right takes on lines. We end with efforts (non verbals) which typically blow out the actor's voice. WE can usually record a full 150 line script in 4 hours. So to bring an actor back for a skin, doesn't really afford us much time with said actor to record an additional set of lines for base champ VO. We're looking into ways to make this happen, but then we typically run into bandwidth issues internally for folks to select, process, edit, hook up, and test the new lines IN ADDITION to the skin VO. It's one of my personal passions to redo as many old champ VOs as possible, and we're making some head way. But I would hate to promise you fine folks something that may take a long time to deliver bc we're all stretched very thin. Writers have to write a lot of new content for league. VO designers have to iterate and implement new content. Anything old we're updating is additional work we're doing on top of our normal workload. Again, it's one of my personal missions to bring as many old champs up to modern quality bar as possible. It's also super hard to do when some of our talent no longer works in the industry meaning we have to recast. Recasting tends to upset mains and we wind up seeing diminishing returns on the effort. TLDR: It's complicated, but it's a dream we do share with you :)

: If they aren't going to give some champ updated visual, least they could do is expand on Voice Overs. MF, Nocturne, Cho, Sona, Nidalee, plus others I'm missing, still refer to 'summoners'. When we started development and naming on Neeko, all the regions we localize into had no real problems with that name. Now, champions take anywhere from 8-14 months to go from our discovery phase (where we brainstorm) to launch. Neeko had an 8 month development cycle. During that time, we ADDED countries to our localization list. In fact, it was super close to PBE when we added Arabic support. Our team immediately flagged the name, but since changing her name so late in the game would cause lots of delays, we opted to keep as is and empower our team to change/edit the name as they saw fit in their language. It's not an ideal solve, I'll admit, but it was definitely a rare case. Now we have added more regions to our sensitivity checks to ensure that this doesn't happen again, as we'd love for all our names to have parity.
: most champions are a pun on their base theme. {{champion:245}} for example.
see my last comment. But we try not to do these too often because they end up being too NA specific and often don't pass regional checks.

Ekko was super tricky to name, to be honest. Kindred was also a toughie. Names that sound like real things are SUPER tough to localize because the homonym nature ONLY exists in English. It's a real crapshoot with other languages who miss out on the pun. IIRC, Ekko almost was flagged in Brazil for being too close to the word for dirty. We thought that actually kind fit, considering Ekko's socio-economic bg in Zaun.

: While im asking about Neeko
Congrats on being one of the first to pick up on this. Neeko's tribe indeed looked at the shedding tails as milestones in maturity, like birthdays. This does not occur annually, but is linked to growth in the spiritual realm. That's what made the Oovi-Kat interesting to me, they descended from the first vastaya, with a lineage that allowed little outside mingling (although some did exist her tribe, while isolated, were very welcoming of strangers which shows in Neeko's worldview) which means that their connection with the spirit realm physically affects their body. Her other three tails were just as beautiful as her current one.
: I won't say that Ez is a douche. He is more like a young Indie Jones. The guy who is hooked on the thrill and danger, likes to snatch artifacts, would kill without remorse and enjoy daring into tombs and hate to comply with authorities.
Perspective that inspired Ezreal: Indiana Jones is the world's worst archaeologist. He breaks his own rules, wantonly destroys priceless artifacts, and decimates countless possible UNESCO world heritage sites. And he's rarely reprimanded for such. Despite teaching that one should never trust folklore over fact, he never abides by that golden rule. He is also my very favorite film hero for all of his flaws. He doesn't need to be good or make reparations for his escapades. He is pure pulpy escapist fun. That's what I find so enchanting about Ez -- he's naturally a magic user but refuses to allow that to make him special alone -- he wants accolades and fame -- which is exactly where Jones is early in his career. He hasn't been tempered by the forces or darkness or witnessed humbling divinity. If the Lore Lords have their way, I will one day get to return to Ezreal, as I already have a very long arc of stories sketched out for our favorite gauntleted almost-hero.

1. Not sure we've released this yet. I'll look into it, but no promises on a fast turnaround, holidays slow everything down. 2. He CAN use magic without his gauntlet, however he prefers not to do so. The Gauntlet makes magic easier, faster, and more powerful. ie -- it's a shortcut and Ez loves using shortcuts. One day he'll have to ditch the gauntlet crutch and do the work the hard way. 3. I cannot go into detail about the what/why/how yet, but they are expressions of magic that appear when he's channeling or using arcane abilities.

That's honestly a Herculean effort and going against what I believe about characters. Once we judge a character, we cement who they are in our minds, and only further stories can convince us otherwise. I don't want to interfere directly with someone else's perception of the character/work. All I will say is each choice, each line, and each story beat was intentionally placed. Some people, for reasons I can't understand, solve bits of the puzzle and then get mad at the puzzle. There's an old saying about storytelling: "the villain at noon is the hero by three". If people don't like where we placed Ez in League, that's okay. Strong reactions indicate passion. My only hope is I get to share with you all the long term and short term arcs I planned for Ezreal while writing him, because there is a LOT more to say with him. If you can't see or find the heart of the character hiding under his obvious overcompensation, that's okay! I'm not going to point it out to anyone. You can not like things and disagree with an author's choices. I accept this. If someone wants to believe Ezreal is a sociopathic affluenza monster, well I'm really not one to invalidate anyone's opinion. My guess is that characters who don't earn or suffer for their rewards infuriate others who have to suffer and work hard. This is VERY true in life. People have very odd reactions to those who lead "charmed lives" like Ezreal. Not to be confused with Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind, one of the most underrated rock acts of the late 1900's/early 2000's (and still going strong today!). Those to whom it seems everything comes naturally or easily are prone to being immediately hated or discounted. And yes, Ezreal is very distrustful of more bilgewater residences. He does love a good game of Krakenhand, even though he doesn't know how to play. Lucky bastard.
: Ezreals Ego is indeed an issue, only second to his narcissim - which might be the main reason he likes Lux. A narcist primarely loves himself, so obviously he would love everything that LOOKS SIMILIAR TO HOW HE THINKS HE LOOKS. Lux is a blonde from an upper-middle-class background (assuming demacian upper class as straight up aristocraty) thrown into extraordinary circumstances who is not exactly understood in the culture that she is from. The paralells one could want to see are there, and that's why Ezreal is fixated on her. I think overcoming his narcissim and actually reflecting on if he really loves Lux for who she is... that's a good character development potential right there, and I love to see that happening. But only after 200 chapters of involuntary comedic murder harem, two flashback arcs, and a beach episode. We gotta keep things in order after all.

Don't forget three bottle episodes and a blatant attempt at a reboot.

: Question on a scale of 1 to 10 how excited would Ezreal be at discovering lands beyond Runeterra? We know from Bio only around 1/6 of the planet is known to us so far, how happy would Ez be to find this out? And would he be _genuinely_ excited or "maybe mom and dad will finally think I'm famous enough to find me" excited, or both? Also is it possible his parents are in that other 5/6 of the planet?

Jeez, that's a mighty big planet. I have ideas as to the fate of Ezreal's parents. Fingers crossed we get to explore this more in the future.
: It works just so well because you know Ezreal will by default play the "cool guy" (tm), but he will also be scared as hell as he's not stupid and kind of knows what he's dealing with. However, the prideful "cool guy act" will forbid him from actually backing out, while his very understanable fear makes a proper rejection impossible. This combination means that he will never get out of this mess by himself, and he's just digging the hole he's in deeper and deeper, all because he's such a proud, so smart yet so stupid brat. The story almost writes itself at that point, he's just the ideal character for this setup.

Ezreal doesn't hate Piltovans, he just obliviously projects his own self-criticism onto a broad pastiche of Piltover citizens. This distaste is kind of key, since it's Ezreal acknowledging how his own flaws were exacerbated by the people around him and the city in which he was raised. As much as he claims to love his image, Ez really can't stand looking in a mirror.

: Yay, you replied again! It’s so cool to talk to the people writing this. I object to the word “mature,” since it implies that children are naturally like Ezreal and must just grow out of it. Children, like adults, generally understand right and wrong. But some of them just don’t care. They only get worse as they get older, so we must notice them early and not delude ourselves about what they really are, or squeamish about what we must do. Isolate, confine, and _forget_. Ezreal is one of them. Even if he had his parents, he would not have been much different. He belongs in jail, with his estate confiscated by the state. And speaking of Better Call Saul, Saul is just a degenerate who disgraces the ethical oaths he swore for a quick buck. When the judge finds out about his misdeeds, we can only hope he adds a lengthy felony stay in state prison to the removal of Saul’s license.
Ah, you are arguing nature vs nurture. I'd recommend watching Better Call Saul, and Breaking Bad for excellent meditations on power, nature, and maturity. And yes, Saul is a degenerate -- but we LOVE Jimmy and want him to be right and stay on the straight and narrow, despite knowing how the story ends. Empathy is fascinating. Maturity is a general term that implies biology, emotional, and psychological elements. In Ez's case -- he's immature. He is like a child. Not all children are like Ez -- that's your projection/definition -- and in no way does that mean all kids are like Ez. Isolate, confine, and forget is how we get monsters lurking in the closet. Ezreal is not a monster. Again, he has one inside and he could potentially become one, but to me there's a heart in Ez that yearns to come out into the light. Then again, as a tireless optimist, I believe in the best in all people. Decision, consequence, and change whittle us into new people one stroke at a time. Do not be so hasty to dismiss and condemn. The fact that we are having this conversation means that new Ez is working. Given my druthers, I would write him until Riot ultimately leads me out behind the dev shed and puts me down, of all the champs I've worked on, he's one of the few that I feel has SOOOOOOO much more story potential.

: I appreciate your response! Ezreal is not just immature. He has serious emotional problems and anti-social tendencies, his behaviors are largely enabled, and no-one stands out as someone to help him. He shrugs off failure and ignores risks. Why would being rejected force him to confront the deeper problems he would need to solve for a healthy relationship with Lux, rather than just rationalize her response and work around it or move on? I fear he might just be irredeemable. He’s everything that’s wrong with Piltover: a charming facade of money and status over a dark reality of moral and personal emptiness. For all his alleged devotion to recovering his parents, he never seems upset about their being gone, or emotionally connected to anything else. It’s almost inhuman.

For all his alleged devotion to recovering his parents, he never seems upset about their being gone, or emotionally connected to anything else. It’s almost inhuman. I think this is a very biased and negative interpretation of the character, but it's one that EASILY could become true if Ezreal does not mature. Should he not evolve off his current path, he will learn all the wrong lessons instead of the right ones and become a villain. That said, you SHOULD worry about Ez. It's what we do for characters we love. Care and worry makes for good stories. It's not as dire as you paint it, but it could get there. He's on what's called an "evolution plot". If he doesn't change his ways, he moves to the opposite path, a "devolution plot". To see what this looks like, watch Better Call Saul. BTW: you can root for a character and not like them. This is how lots of fiction works.

: While pre-update Ezreal might have been endearing, I imagine this new one would just turn Lux off with his arrogance and emptiness, especially once she’d read about what he’d done with that artifact. Yikes. Also, an arrogant and insecure guy who won’t take no for an answer sounds like the start of a rather cringey or even creepy story, rather than the romantic comedy you have in mind. What’s he gonna do once she politely but firmly turns him down?

What’s he gonna do once she politely but firmly turns him down? Ez respects physical boundaries. He'd take the rejection like a champ, honestly. That doesn't mean he wouldn't try to change her mind by changing her perception of him -- which would probably be good for Ez. It would ultimately mature him into acceptance.

: Does Pyke have a ghost crew?
The Swimming City is the key to understanding what happened to Pyke. Pyke does not have a crew. He does respect the notion of crews and the bonds that make a ship function. He is in no way a leader or a captain.

Can I know why? Ezreal was a character that I felt had a lot of storytelling potential with a largely untapped personality rich with flaws and strengths. He struck me as like a young Starlord with delusions of grandeur and something to prove, and a lot of growing up to do. There was something about his overconfidence that seemed to cover a lot of wounds he'd never admit to having -- the way his gauntlet does all the work for him, despite Ezreal's clear talent... he lacked a desire to do the hard work despite being totally capable of it. Ezreal wants to see and do so much that he's willing to take shortcuts and write consequences off as natural collateral damage. I dunno, that's really fun to me. It resonated with me. I have so many Ezreal stories that I've pitched and hope to get to tell, if Riot's will allow me to. I've always loved adventure seekers, relic hunters, mystery-solvers... they want to believe in something more ancient than themselves to cover a present they can't face.
: @Riot, What champions from league has Ezreal canonically met in his travels?
: @Riot, What champions from league has Ezreal canonically met in his travels?
I think that Ezreal has met almost as many champions as Ryze. Certainly quite a few in his travels, but there's a lot more Ezreal has to explore.
: "You belong in a museum!"
Uh. "You belong in a museum" is DEFINITELY in the script and in the game. (it is no longer spammable, though as there are a couple other taunts). We recorded it. The Skin Spotlight video does NOT have all the lines. I do not know why. I do not make the videos or have any real say in them.

He LOVES adventure, but his deeper, inner motivation is to fill the void left by his parents' disappearance. The problem is that, although his biography and tells that he wants to become Runeterra’s most famous explorer to attract his parents’ attention, his short story _shows_ that he just wants attention to feed his grandiosity. It also shows that he is obsessed with this pursuit of attention, since he expresses no other emotion except giddiness for it. He never expresses guilt for stealing money or credit from his uncle, or destroying priceless history, and shifts blame when he starts a fire that destroys a business district. Told with the glib charm characteristic of narcissism and sociopathy, Ezreal is almost a textbook example of both. I shudder to imagine that this was your intention.
Choice was to put Ezreal closer to the beginning of his arc -- where overconfidence and bravado are crutches to cover his wound. Most people don't have any idea what their wound is, but their behaviors and actions tend to be how they overcompensate. We want to give Ezreal room to grow and tapped what was already present in the character/VO as it is. He has a very antagonistic relationship with his uncle. Destroying priceless artifacts (intentionally or collaterally) is a convention of the high adventure genre that is fun to play with. Ezreal will *always* do the right thing, even if it's for the wrong reasons. He's reckless, overconfident, and wants to be seen as a flashy hero... because he knows deep down he's gifted and not pushing himself in the real way... he's not doing the work and is skating by on his talent and dependence on his gauntlet. I LOVED writing Ezreal. He's the flawed hero who's got a lot to learn in order to actually be a true hero.
Jikker (NA)
: There's a lot of potential in his lore since he's the way he is for reasons, not just because. With Zoe, she was just always like that and now her aspect mentality encourages her erratic behaviour. With Jayce...well I don't think it's ever explained. But with Ez, he's got a lot of problems in his background and psychological issues from growing up. What he is makes sense. Think of him as teenage Indiana with more personal problems, Mommy _and_ Daddy issues, and extreme lack of maturity. When he reaches his 30s, after getting in lots of trouble and going through more personal troubles such as seeing the true consequences of his actions (like getting severely injured or losing a loved one), he'd probably be left with his adventurous attitude minus the recklessness. If Riot is bold enough, I think they can take the character far with development and growth. Probably won't, but we can hope. I do feel there is a bit of trouble with the execution of it as his voiceover seems a bit too obnoxious and out of character from his lore even (not his new story though).
