: His personality is very different than Rhaast or Varus. They are only just getting "free." I can't reveal much, but internally and in player labs-- people love him.
As a fan of Aatrox I only have one question about his voice, does he still sound like he was ripped from Dark Souls and Bloodborne? That is my favorite thing about how he talks and sounds. That over the top breathy and somber way the characters in Dark Souls talk is my favorite aspect of those games, and is also my favorite aspect of Aatrox. Every other character in League talks like a normal person, but Aatrox talks like some ancient strange demon.

: Today I played Mundo top and my opponent chose Quinn and bought first item Executioner's Calling. It felt pretty effective, though it didn't let her just out right kill me or anything it certainly changed how I played. I couldn't just all in her easily, relying on my ult to win the fight, so I had to try to wear her down. But that didn't work well because she could kite me and mostly avoid cleavers by staying behind minions. To me the item felt overall effective and worth while for her without making me feel completely useless on Mundo, especially once I got to do stuff away from her. I think a lot of the problem with the item comes from its lack of build path options, not due to it failing to do its job. I almost never buy it when I ADC in part because it only builds into one thing and I often still want the effect from Giant Slayer as well. I really wish GS + EC combined into something.

: Graves is a better drain tank than Aatrox, Olaf, and Warwick
Honestly if Aatrox dealt entirely Physical damage we could see him being a better drain tank than Graves, but that might be bad for the game.
: A few main reasons. Happy to go into more detail if needed. 1. All other things equal, a charm is generally stronger than a stun given that it displaces and changes facing. 2. It generally felt like the desire for Taric to have a charm was more about personality than gameplay, and the gameplay hooks we ended up choosing for his update felt more appropriate with a stun instead of a charm. 3. It seemed like we could get most of the "charm" the character needed through emotes, VO, alternate skin fantasies, etc. For what it's worth, we did spend a fair amount of time testing a charm on his kit. Just decided it wasn't the best fit in the end.

Built full tank destroyer (granted he roamed bot and got a triple) and he was unstoppable.. Full build, he was much tankier than the enemy rammus when you factor in his shield, mobility, and ult. : Attack speed is just extremely beneficial rune stat for almost any champion early in the game. With few items/levels/abilities auto attacking is a good bit of your offensive output whoever you are. AS provides the highest dps increase if you're able to cycle your auto attacks efficiently. It's why it's popular for jungling. Attack speed also gives you more power in farming ability/pushing ability greatly aiding you in lane control. Helps you avoid getting level 2'd; helps you soften waves crashing into your tower so you can freeze; helps you clear the lane and recall... Plus attacking not slow feels nice. Also the effect of barely getting an extra attack in can be greater than other stats. Few champions want to rush AS items so getting it from runes is wise. It just makes the AD you build better.

It fits his aspect honestly. War is emotionless. War is moraless. War is characterless. War is cruel. War is blunt. Atreus gave up everything to gain that aspect. Not every character needs to be complex and emotional or even relatable. Pantheon is just a soldier.

Hes supposed to fall off late game because of how much influence he has over early and mid game. Riot is worried about ever buffing his jungle clear because of how hard he ganks. His mana costs are justified when compared to how low CD his abilities are and how much damage they do early.

His play tends to be somewhat more on the focus a particular target end of things though, rather than working his way through multiple targets with auto attacks as much as Jax does. Combine that with incentive to build tankier than Jax and, at least in terms of present functionality, diver's the bucket I'd put him in.

: Aatrox, Xin, Irelia are champs we classify as diving fighters. If we were doing a diver update (divers are one of the groups we'd like to get to at some point) we'd definitely want to work on Aatrox, suspect we'd probably do at least some lighter work on Xin and Irelia. Jax we see as a hybrid of diving fighter and light fighter (like Yi, Trynd, Yasuo etc). Kayle's a weird hybrid that doesn't fit any of our sub class definitions well. That's ok, they're there as ways to assess champions, not necessarily rigid requirements (Singed is another good example of a hard to categorize champ, with elements of juggerant, initiator tank and his own stuff rolled together).

: We bundle these class focused updates into patches for a couple of reasons in particular: * Working on multiple members of a class at once means we've got a number of designers all tackling similar problems at the same time. That means they're able to build up frameworks to work within together (e.g. what tools should a juggernaut have, which strategic spaces would it be healthy to shift marksmen into to differentiate them etc). That leads to a more productive way of working an helps avoid kit overlap (one of the biggest things we're trying to fix) as we map out space for multiple champions at once. * Doing batches of a class together mean we can then make more comprehensive item changes in conjunction with the champion updates that support and synergize with the kits. As above developing an understanding of the classes strengths and weaknesses as a group then also helps a lot with understanding itemization needs and restrictions.

: We'll be doing some work on AP itemization with the mage update, focusing on some of the mana, MP5 and/or CDR items. Concern over AP itemization actually leaves me kind of happy in a weird way, in that AP itemization hasn't changed that much over the past year but it's no longer in a clearly better spot than other parts of the item system, unlike this time last year when ADC and fighter items looked comparatively sad next to it. Towers we'll be talking about internally soon. It's possible some changes there might help out with the lack of early interaction in top tier play (lack of laning phases sometimes for example) and we're well aware some players want much more murderous towers. Need to talk about whether that's going to be something that's good for the game or not though, or whether given how much better players have got at juggling agro earlier tower diving's an appropriate and expected part of the game at this point. Death timers I think's a point we'll have to disagree on for now, in that we currently feel they're in the right ballpark, particularly given homeguards being available to everyone for free post 20 minutes.

I know this isn't related, and I wanted to ask it here because anyone that is pro-fighter on these boards gets their threads raided and downvoted. but would be you against shifting some of the AP ratio from Aatrox's R to his W? Every other fighter in his subclass, Xin/Kayle/Irelia/Jax, can use Rageblade efficiently and he can't. Like 20% on his Heal and 40% on his Damage for W with a 60% AP ratio on his R would be at least worth trying. I think it would be better for his balance overall.

Champs like... {{champion:238}} {{champion:114}} {{champion:64}} {{champion:92}} {{champion:107}} {{champion:122}} {{champion:86}} {{champion:1}} {{champion:91}} {{champion:119}} {{champion:36}} {{champion:223}} {{champion:105}} {{champion:157}} {{champion:104}} Something behind the scenes is going on here... you guys have conflicting design values. You let some champs dominate for long periods of time, but other champs if they see play within a week they get nerfed...

Thats why he is far more problematic than any of the Champions you listed.
: Aren't spells the backbone of a champion's gameplay though? Keeping them under wraps is the kind of obfuscation that a lot of people are getting really tired of, I think. Discussion of "goals, direction, player concerns" is all well and good, but at the end of the day that sort of thing is so vague that it's effectively meaningless to us. Okay, so you're going to keep Taric's kit "simple" -- well, what does that really mean, in a gameplay sense? No skillshots? No minigames? When it comes to a relaunch, we want to know more specific details. I mean, at least with Malz you teased what his ult might involve.

I've seen Riot compare him to Braum before, so probably that simple. They don't want to give specifics because things change.
: 30,000,000 * 0.005 = 150,000 players seems like a lot to me

: I think people are more annoyed with the fact that Riot barely even tried to care for the map at all. People stopped playing/caring dominion because riot stopped balancing it around like season 3. (As far as I remember anyways, correct me if I'm wrong please) There was little to no reason to even try playing the game mode when riot barely did anything about bots in the mode and ignored it anyways.

Why should they pour time and effort into a map that nobody plays?

Aram has a much more dedicated playerbase. Dominion is barely played by anyone.
: I somewhat hope his winrate goes to an all time low on release. He's a brand new champion that should require some time to learn, and Taric has spent basically his whole existence at win rates above 50%. If he comes out much over that, he's probably broken.

I remember Rek'Sai was one of the only recent releases (either champ or rework) that had higher than 50% on release. Something like 56% iirc.
