: Thats a terrible example. You want Morgana because she has a whopping 5 seconds of stuns and you dont want Soraka because she's an overnerfed, shitty support. Nerfing the poke item, if anything, pushes out the poke supports. Nothing else. A mage becomes a support not because of spellthief's edge, but because he turns out to be better at supporting than regular supports. Ex. Zyra and Annie becoming supports before spellthief was released
Zyra and Annie may have become supports before spellthief was introduced but adding in spellthief meant that had to make no sacrifices to be in that role.
: This does not really answer the question. If supports are able to carry, it does not matter if they are squishy. Glass cannon Mage supports do so well because they are able to force their opponents out of lane through sheer damage, and "kill secure". With them building support items and ap they don't need farm but still do significant damage.
A better way to put it is that its simply too efficient to run a traditional support. Why would I want a lets say Soraka support who can heal for 150 health every 18 seconds, verse a Morgana "support" who can deal 350 damage every 14 seconds. The item pushes out supports.
: So about the Spellthiefs edge nerf on the PBE..
Because it easily allows "supports" the ability to just build as a second carry.
