Riot Ransom does this all the time and it makes me irrationally angry. It's the part of me that internally screams, IT DOESN'T MATTER, THEY'LL PICK WHAT THEY PICK JUST BE GOOD AGAINST EVERYTHING GOD
: Thanks for the response
Hey, of course! It's posts like these that make us question our assumptions.

The original/old champions are filled with those kinds of VO lines. > > I'm not saying you're wrong; it's interesting because of what players perceive as nonsense. Will we see future VOs for old champions, and if so will they be at the same level of quality as the newer champions have? One of core gripes with the old champions is that their lines are generic to the point of making the characters look like caricatures and pop culture references (Gangplank is a pirate so he says typical pirate stuff, Shaco is a jester, so he says typical jester stuff...) I would like to see the old characters to be as fleshed out with the VO as all the newer ones are, hopefully that will eventually be achieved.
Although I don't work on the relaunch team, I can say with confidence that any champions that receive updated VO will match the quality of today's champions. ETA: the generic factor is a big motivation in updating VO. When you look at old VO sets you wouldn't be able to tell who is saying what because those lines can be planted on _any_ champion, which removes some uniqueness from our otherwise awesome champs.
: Champion VO's Make No Sense
This is really interesting to me because when I was writing VO for champions last year (I moved to Dev Management so I can't speak for the team nowadays), the writing team and I made a deliberate effort to go away from old quotes like "I will not falter," "it ends here," "into battle," and generic shit like that. The original/old champions are filled with those kinds of VO lines. I'm not saying you're wrong; it's interesting because of what players perceive as nonsense.

It takes no effort to deal damage in a team fight even if he gets killed immediately sure I think it is fair for his ult turret to keep truckin but the other 3 is just part of the reason that people think he doesn't take skill.
damn a Heimer must've really gotten to you huh
: So, why is the Donger not a real champ?
The Donger is real. The Donger is life. They're just jealous about being killed by a short, smart, furry-person. It's like when bullies throw out shitty insults when they feel threatened and stupid IRL. All hail the Donger.

As someone who tries to collect all things Heimerdinger, I highly advocate for a Heimer spinning dancing toy. That'd be legit.
: More seriously: I think Nasus being from Shurima is how it always should have been, sort of like Olaf with the Freljord. And I definitely don't hold the old lore sacred. A lot of it is, honestly, pretty goofy. Some gems were stumbled upon amid all that wackiness, but there was also a lot of painfully stupid material. I'm glad to see lore getting polished up. (I do get a little concerned when I see some of those gems being ground up with all the junk. If you ever make Veigar not a cuddly yordle who went crazy from lack of snuggles, or make Teemo not a sociopathic killer, or make Dr. Mundo a played-straight growly scary bruiser with a voice filter, I'll cry for days. Please keep a little silliness in LoL's lore.) All in all, good stuff. For example: I think the new Sion lore is already a drastic improvement. I mean, I'll probably still be mumbling about the Summoners retcon when they put me into a nursing home, but other than that, I do like what you're doing, Summoner Opeli.
I'm there with you. I think the old lore is pretty damn charming. There's something so... familiar and cozy about it.
: ""Does this mean older story efforts like the Journal of Justice and League Judgments are meaningless? Of course not. In the same way that we can go back and enjoy old books, shows, films, art, and comics that have been superseded by more recent interpretations of the same material, League’s original lore remains a cherished part of its history. From comic books to classic literature, exploration of the same creative space in vastly different ways is a natural part of storytelling."" I am still confused on what is canon and what no longer is canon in terms of lore. It's hard to discuss anything because everything seems to be uncertain at this moment, besides everything pertaining to the Shurima event. What I have taken from the quote from the dev blog. Everything post-Shurima event will now be canon, and everything pre-Shurima event should be treated as a different universe or a different telling of possible future events? (similar to comic books I guess?) I suppose I would like a more concise or better clarification on what aspects of "old" lore is being kept and if we should just remember the "old" lore in fondness, or if we should still draw from it for discussions on the current lore.
> What I have taken from the quote from the dev blog. Everything post-Shurima event will now be canon, and everything pre-Shurima event should be treated as a different universe or a different telling of possible future events? (similar to comic books I guess?) That's pretty close - what hasn't changed is any of the champions' personalities and the majority of what you know about them, to be honest. If you go through bios that mention the IoW, all you have to do is omit the League part in your brain. They're different canons, and we won't be expanding on the old one. We normally alter a champion's story during an event or champ rework, so that they feel more cohesive with the new canon. You guys have seen this happen for the past two years or so. For example, Cass is still from Noxus and Kat's sister, even though we've embedded her into the new Shurima story. She's still a seductress and a little less liked than Kat. But instead of having her cursed from Joe Schmoe from Freljord, we wanted her entwined (HEH) with a bigger storyline and other champions. The core things you know about champions remain the same... For example, Nasus used to be a space librarian. Now he's not from space; his previous lore revolved around "How do we get him to Runeterra and care about it?!" and it *had him summoned to Runeterra against his will* - we don't want that constraint, and frankly, that plot point makes me super sad as a writer. But he still retains his personality and his relationship with his brother, since those are the things that are key to Nasus, not the fact that Summoners channeled him to fight for them for reasons.

: Multiple question attack! GO So what happened of the emperor after the ritual where xerath tricked him? where did he go? how did he ascend in the end?? what is ascension anyway? where did he come back from?? PS: this champ looks and sounds amazing, good work and thanks in advance. I look forward to playing as him.
Azir was scattered to the winds - he disappeared off the face of the planet. You'll get the answers to your other questions in the next story installment of Shurima!
: Bit of topic and not totally about Azir. I was wondering, I Xerath full evil now. It's just that, as some one who plays and loved Xerath's lore he never struck me as evil. All he wanted was to learn the truth of magic. I would love to see more of Xerath reasons behind why he took the ascension ritual from Azir and the subsequent fallout.
Nope. There are always two sides to every story. Or three. Or four. We're only seeing one perspective of Xerath. When we expand on Xerath's lore you'll see "his" side of the story. I don't want him to lose his humanity or his passion for magic - it's highly likely he started off as a normal, helpful dude and the lure of the Ascension ritual was his misstep.
: But why would a proud and (formerly?) arrogant emperor come to help one of his many soldiers? It just kind of breaks with the typical "die for me" kind of emperor trope. (It's not a bad thing, I am just wondering)
He's not arrogant in an "I'm better than you" sense, it's more of a "I know what's best!" sense. He'll interact with his soldiers because he's still a good, fair leader.
Zefer (NA)
: The voice acting for Azir really fits his whole royalty aspect. How many people did you go through to find the right person? Or was it an easy decision from the start?
Nooo, we went through so many people. We knew what kind of voice we wanted, but it was difficult to find the right person to execute on it.
: If Azir had a full Pokemon team, what Pokemon would they be?
HMMM well I haven't kept up with the recent generations of Pokemon, but he'd definitely have a team of all birds or all Sandshrews.
Sahira94 (NA)
: After being updated again you couldn't put a link such as "read more here"? So people who don't know that in the website there are a complete and detailed story can find out and go read!
Huh? They haven't been updated with longer-form bios yet. Especially not Azir's, as that would spoil the Shurima event. Once it's updated you'll be able to get it through the client.
: How many times did you have to say the name "Shurima" while writing Azir's lore and quotes (if you write the quotes)?
I think I've said "Shurima" about 3000 times in the past year. I think he says 'Shurima' 50-some times in his VO script. We're all about Shurima'd out, haha.
: I would like to ask something lore wise, and not just about Azir, but about every champion related to Shurima in one way, shape, or form. In the client, you have reduced these champion's lore to a very short paragraph, whereas before, they were practically stories in of themselves. Are these lore changes simply placeholders for future lore additions, or is this the beginning of the not-so-well-received announcement of the disconnect between the game and the lore? If its the former, I will gladly wait for those additions. If its the latter, will there be a separate website you guys will develop that will hold the entire story of not only Shurima, but Runeterra as a whole?
Sure thing. Those client blurbs are intended to stay on the client only, and a longer story will be on the website. They'll be updated in time. :D
: In the past Champions seem to have been introduced with a bit of ceremony and build up. Azir however seems to have been presented in a very flat and straight forward manner. Why is that?
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "flat and straight-forward?"
: So then what's Cassiopeia's situation? I know you have more lore to show us later, but is she basically like a half-ascended?
No, she went through a different transformation thanks to the serpent guardian in the tomb. She was cursed.
Jhegala (NA)
: Maybe it will be explained further in the Shurima event, but how exactly did Azir achieve Ascension? From the way things have been presented thus far he was obliterated when Xerath ascended.
It will be explained later. :)
Vendorus (EUNE)
: Was he always so...birdy? I mean he has fabulous legs but I wonder were they like that when he was young and...alive?
No, he was human originally. But I also think he has fabulous legs. :P
Karakazan (EUW)
: He sounds too overbearing to do things peacefully.
You mean how his actual voice sounds? People with deep, commanding voices can be good guys.
: Since Nasus, Renekton, and Azir are all ascended, then does that mean pretty much all the ascended are furries? And if that's the case, did Xerath overdo it and ended up becoming a being of energy instead when he took Azir's place in the ritual?
Like, do they participate in furry culture...? But, seriously, yeah - they all take on an animal form. Xerath overdid it.
: When you created a sandmage, what brought you to the concept of controlling soldiers?
The fantasy of being an emperor. As an emperor, you have soldiers fighting wars for you, and you'd command them - so we went with controlling soldiers. :)
Karakazan (EUW)
: Why can't Azir just let go his lost empire? What he gonna rule there anyway, sands? Though I can somehow see him modeling his whole empire with sand then play empire in his head. Now I kinda got sad for him...
That would be the easy way out, and that's not his style! His goal is to get people to come back to his empire and spread Shurima's influence around the world. Although, yeah... It's a little sad. He has so much work to do, and no one to help him.
Tact (NA)
: Here are my questions! (Serious questions) -Did Azir rule alone, or would there have been a...Mrs. Azir? -Are Azir's sand soldiers dressed in the garb they wore when Shurima was still intact? Was their equipment immediately familiar to him when he summoned them the first time? -Did Azir have any inkling that Xerath was going to betray him, or was he blind to that possibility? (Slightly off-topic question, but still relating to Azir/Shurima) -The Facebook preview mentioned Nasus and Renekton being "Ascended heroes." Is that why Fury of the Sands and Dominus (their ults) are so similar? Is that the kind of power they gain by drawing on their Ascended forms? (Funny questions) -Does Azir sleep in a bed or a nest? If it's a nest, what's it made of?
>(Serious questions) >Did Azir rule alone, or would there have been a...Mrs. Azir? It's safe to say he was... popular with the ladies. >-Are Azir's sand soldiers dressed in the garb they wore when Shurima was still intact? Was their equipment immediately familiar to him when he summoned them the first time? Yeah, he forms the image of them, so he wasn't surprised. >-Did Azir have any inkling that Xerath was going to betray him, or was he blind to that possibility? He was blind to it. He totally trusted Xerath. :( >(Slightly off-topic question, but still relating to Azir/Shurima) -The Facebook preview mentioned Nasus and Renekton being "Ascended heroes." Is that why Fury of the Sands and Dominus (their ults) are so similar? Is that the kind of power they gain by drawing on their Ascended forms? Their kits/characters were created before Ascension was something we discussed, so, maybe they were designed with a similarity in mind back in the day. >(Funny questions) >-Does Azir sleep in a bed or a nest? If it's a nest, what's it made of? I don't think he sleeps! At all!
Vakabiel (NA)
: Would you say Azir was the kind of ruler that people** flocked** to?
: When and why did the idea of a Sand Mage come up? And why did you make him an emperor that summons soldier, instead of casting more traditional sand spells? (Like Gaara from Naruto)
I'm not the gameplay designer, but I can tell you that the idea behind his kit was, as an emperor, you should be commanding people. So it was thematically-fitting that he summons people to his side and tells them what to do. He's gone through a ton of changes over the years, though... at one point he was a more traditional "sand mage."
: I HAD A IMPORTANT QUESTION, WHY DID AZIR JOIN THE LEAGUE? hehehe. Now, the real question, if the ascension reliq was used in the past... did that mean nasus, Renekton and azir are not the only furry ascended people on valoran?
>I HAD A IMPORTANT QUESTION, WHY DID AZIR JOIN THE LEAGUE? hehehe. ;_____________; >Now, the real question, if the ascension reliq was used in the past... did that mean nasus, Renekton and azir are not the only furry ascended people on valoran? Entirely possible! They haven't shown their faces lately, though, if there are others out there.
: Does azir wish to just peacefully rebuild shurima and see if people join his ways? Or will he do it with force?
He wishes to do it peacefully, but he's not afraid of using force. It will only happen if he's forced his hand.
: How much of Runeterra (regions, city states etc.) does Azir know/remember from old-Shuriman days? How much has changed for him?
For some people, Shurima is like an Atlantis to them - they believe it's only a myth (although, obviously, they will be proven wrong). For others, like the people currently inhabiting the desert of Shurima, they knew it existed a long time ago and there are believed to be no "true" Shurimans remaining. Even Renekton and Nasus were stories for them. A LOT has changed for Azir. He has a lot of catching up to do.
: if he is 3 years old in terms of development you could have spent 3 months making character lore more than just a character description if it isn't going to be lore anymore just rename it to character description.
He has a full story coming, but it'd spoil the rest of the Shurima event. So we're waiting to reveal it until you guys see the full story.
: What does Azir think of Nasus? Does he respect him or dislike him?
Azir deeply respects Nasus. Although Nasus views him as a little arrogant because he got to see what happened to Shurima as a result of Azir's hubris.
: I'm not mad, I'm just a little disappointed. I'm just wondering what your thought process was in decided to title him 'Emperor of the Sands' instead of 'Pharaoh of the Sands.' I mean really any way that you look at it, he is a freaking Pharaoh.
Ehhh, we don't want Shurima = Egypt *all* the time. We want to make Shurima our own unique place in League with the stories we tell. But, obviously there were Egyptian influences with Renekton, Nasus, and Azir.
: I'm more interested in Azir as a ruler. -what kind of a ruler was he? -now that he is returned, what are his views on the other City-States like Noxus and Piltover? -does Azir plan to rebuild Shurima? -and as a side question, can Azir shed some light onto Amumu's past?
>what kind of a ruler was he? He was a benevolent leader. Still a dictator, but a kind one, and he was interested in his people's well-being and prosperity. He got a little ahead of himself, though - hence the over-enthusiastic Ascension ritual - but even that was done with good intentions. He wanted Shurima to grow and influence the entire world. >now that he is returned, what are his views on the other City-States like Noxus and Piltover? Azir believes that the other city-states would benefit from Shurima's culture and way of life. He'll try to get them to join his empire and conform to his ideals. HOWEVER, he is in for quite the culture shock because so much has changed while he's been... away. I think Zaun would boggle him the most. But he wouldn't let anyone see that. >does Azir plan to rebuild Shurima? Yes! It's his main motivation. >and as a side question, can Azir shed some light onto Amumu's past? Probably, but I don't think he's been made aware of Amumu's existence yet.
: > Oh! This would be better suited for the Gameplay Q&A. I'm just a Narrative minion. > > http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/sixv1VVL-azir-qa-gameplay I noted that a minute ago. Sorry. I forgot you guys split up your Q/As into sections. XD
No worries! Hope your answers are questioned in the other thread. :)
: Perhaps Xerath had animal features originally, and his living energy from makes them invisible. His lore used to say that he was formless energy, bound to the shape of his former confinement.
Xerath was also human, but became formless energy through the warped Ascension ritual. He carries around the remains of a broken sarcophagus that was originally used to try to contain him.

That puts him in the ranks of other solid picks like Heimerdinger and Zyra, even somewhat similar to Zed. More to live up to. iii. He is also an AP auto-attacker 1. This puts him among Kayle and Teemo, both some of the most strongly felt about champions in the game, and an AP AA’er is something players have been asking for for sometime. : How long has Azir been in the works? We know the Sand Mage was an idea kicked around for a long time, but when did the Eygyptian Ra-esque Bird Emperor become the settled upon concept for the Sand Mage Archetype? Time line specifics much appreciated :D
For three years, I believe. I think it started with a kit. Someone might have to correct me on that, though. He became the bird emperor you know today about a year and a half ago. **EDIT: NOPE I was wrong. Runaan corrected me. She pitched him as a character over three years ago. It wasn't a kit, first.**
: Is it intended that all(or almost all) ascended have some sort of animal features appearing on them? Nasus and Renekton being a dog and crocodile, and Azir being a bird for some reason(he definitely does not seem bird-like when he was young)? Xerath I assume something different happened because of the nature of his ascension.
Yes! It's intended. They were all human before Ascension. Because Xerath corrupted the ritual, he turned out, well... different.
  Rioter Comments
: "Why? It's a game" Then why even fucking care about Lore if that's the attitude? You literally just used the arguments for why people say Lore in this game is a joke. "It's a game , so why care", why indeed if Riot doesn't care either.
I mean, why is it imperative that a 5v5 game is deeply connected to our characters? Can they not be enjoyed on their own, or separately? The point of separating them, although it's not clear now, is to give the champions better stories and to care about them more. You keep assuming we're doing this because we don't care or we're lazy or we (fill in the blank) but you aren't trying to consider why this *might* be a positive. It sucks to have something change, but not all change is the worst thing ever. "It's just a game" is NOT the attitude. I frickin' love League. I love the game. I like knowing about the champion I'm playing, which is a thing you'll still get to experience. The core experience of supporting a champion with a backstory, personality, and motivations has not disappeared. They just aren't permanently tied to this UN of Runeterra anymore.
Flemman (EUW)
: So no more league in "league of legend", that sound weird >-<
Flemman (EUW)
: So all lore related to the league will vanish, what will happen to the like of jax, fiddle, nocturne, malphite, who are just here because of the league. As now we know it's gone, they just don't fit the game at all (in a lore way)
Cuix (NA)
: > We're basically reworking it all. No Summoners, no Institute of War. I personally liked that excuse plot, but I can understand it holding y'all back. I'll be sad to see it go, but a full-on rework is likely actually for the best. I can definitely support this decision, despite some personal displeasure. However... > Part of the struggle, for me at least, is that it's a monumental task to do a FULL re-envisioning for the ENTIRE cast and beyond, and we'd always be battling with time. I don't think piecemeal the ideal way to do it, but we now feel compelled/pressured to give you a start and follow-up. The entire time we wanted to do story "part 2's" and stuff we knew we were going to re-explore League's world, so a lot of those efforts were put on hold until we said something about our lore reboot. So what have you been DOING this whole time?
Personally? I was a narrative assistant for a while and took notes in meetings, submitted lines for VO scripts, wrote Tryndamere's new bio because I was given the opportunity, and generally got projects organized (but many didn't see the light of day - this isn't atypical for *any* game studio). Then I became a writer and worked on Vel'Koz, Braum, new Heimer, Gnar, and Azir. I continued to submit VO lines for all other champions and create story pitches for things we might use in the future. So, like, the normal stuff. Most of which you've seen. As for the rest of the department? We have people dedicated to VO, some to champion ideation and champ team, reworks, skins, worldbuilding, and R&D (finding new ways to tell story). We don't have enough bodies to throw at projects, unfortunately, but we're getting to a point where we can devote more and more time to shiny things.
: > It's still called Summoner's Rift. It's a name I think will never go away for League, so we're not going to make you call it something else. > > What do you mean, why? It's a game, and we want to keep it that. It's okay for the game to stay the same and champions' backstories to change. No it fucking isn't ok for the game to stay and champion backstories to change. That's like saying it's ok for the Mario games to stay the same but to take Mario out of them. If you're the person in charge of lore then I for sure will not read a single piece from here on out.
But we aren't taking any champion out of the game? I don't feel like that's a fair analogy. I'm not in charge of lore, so you're all set there!
: Okay, so, would I be wrong to say that the game should play akin to something like Super Smash Brothers? Each character has their own story (albeit, in League that story is connected to the world and to other characters) but the combative gameplay has no real story implications. So, there's a 5v5 arena because that's cool game play, and not for any particular narrative reasons.
: By why I mean why are they in this arena, fighting to destroy the enemies nexus? Where is this arena located? Summoner's and Institute don't exist anymore, so there has to be SOME reason.
There has to be a reason? We can't explore these champions in a cool, fun way that's just the game League of Legends? The game and the narrative are separate entities. Champions are made for the game, but we want them to have a life of their own if, say, League was a novel, or comic series, or movie, or something like that. We wouldn't show Vel'Koz and Zilean fighting with three other randos down alleys to conquer a base in a movie. That's just... weird.
