Thanks. Now the natural question: _why_ does Illaoi have a boob window and a half-bare midriff instead of her usual armor plate?
As the concept artist on her, I'll jump in here. So to be completely honest, I look at the initial iteration of a LITERAL "rectangle cut from an otherwise complete shirt with the intention to show off cleavage" was a mistake on my part. While it's a very prominent design choice made in lots of character costuming in our game and others, it undermined what I was really trying to get at: that in this world Illaoi is a survivor-turned-resistance fighter squaring off against monstrosities of epic proportions. Thinking about what my intent was for that detail on her costuming, it's clear I was channeling every female survivor protagonist from blockbuster films, hit tv shows and classic games (that I can't name due to legal reasons). All of them have very similar elements in their design and something as simple as a tank top signals that feeling of surviving, having full range of movement, etc. Where the design is currently isn't a "look she has boobs!" detail, it's an intentional design choice that's been refined and discussed both here on the boards with you guys as well as between us internally. The other side of this rather touchy subject, especially in today's social climate, is that bigger women might feel it's offensive to HAVE TO cover up a character like Illaoi. I have a friend back home where I'm from who was super excited to see that there was a "big girl" body type being treated equally for once in her costuming. Look at other games and movies where there is a big, or muscular woman as a featured character... they're always seemingly covered up. What I took from that conversation is that while the intent to shield a female's characterization is super admirable, making assumptions that she should arbitrarily be covered completely is at best close minded. Ultimately this is one of the zillions of reasons we wanted to include you guys in the process. If we created this skin behind closed doors, I'm confident we would've eventually came to a similar conclusion. That being said, the ability to field a simple 2D sketch to our players before even entering production and building her has been both a huge eye opener and an awesome challenge that I feel we've met head on. Keep sending us your feels throughout the process, positive and negative. For our entire team, this has been one of the most engaging projects we've ever worked on due to the enthusiasm, feedback loop, and general hype you guys have sent our way. Fistbump!
: Illaoi pumpkin carving
Goot LAWT that's insane! WE NEED MOAR.
: Why I voted for Deep Space Illaoi...
: Riot, I love this idea with voting for Illaoi's next skin
Ohhhh man I want a Tahmy skin too. Anyhoo, thanks for chiming in. While I wish I could claim that our aim with this event was calculated, and that our profits have been carefully accounted for in this business decision: it's straight up just us nerding out over the chance to share with our amazing players what we do when we make these decisions. Keep the feedback coming through the the production of the skin, super hyped that you guys are pumped, now let's go make some hotness!
: WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR DEEP SPACE ILLAOI
3spoopy5me. Love the post Vanitas!
Dr Poro (EUW)
: Exactly. This was a clear case of "this champ needs a skin. Let's find her a skin." I won't expect them to come up with 'vote your next Ahri skin'.
Ahah! Not true my friend! We were literally staring at a bunch of directions for her and decided the timing was juuuuuust right to hold a vote, something we've all wanted to do for a very long time. This is a BIT of an experiment, and judging on how well this event is received, we'd love to do more skin votes in the future. In fact, a counter point to your Ahri example is that - let's be real - Ahri's got skins for days and the thematics in them cover a lot of ground. It'd probably even more valuable to hold a vote on a super popular champ with lots of skins to see what else is interesting to players. So hang in there, keep that feedback coming, and let's make something dope!
: Battlecast Illaoi is flawed. Imperfect. Incorrect.
Ohai! Yeah I agree the name needs some work, but this is basically how we work internally. This name or "resistance" Illaoi is just how we refer to that concept, with absolute plans to give it an official, awesome name before we ship. Feel free to throw out ideas for naming these too peeperinos! IF this one wins I kinda like the name "Iron Resistance Illaoi" or something like that. I dunno, I draw pictures ;)
: Thoughts from a 1 Million Mastery Illaoi.
Yooooo!!! Thank you for taking the time to write up your thoughts TTK Techno! I just got around to answering some of the boards posts, and a fellow Rioter referred your post to me to check out. You make a lot of very well thought out points here amigo, and these are all things that we ping pong back and forth during our review meetings. Fistbump! Also, just to clarify, we aren't going to just make the skin that wins the votes and then completely toss out the other ideas and never come back to them. This event has clearly struck a chord with players and has brought out some passionate discussions (such as yours!) so we'd be fools to just never revisit the other two skins. A really cool side effect that we didn't anticipate is that there are a ton of skin ideas players have pitched as a reaction to the vote. I used to spend hours dreaming up skin ideas for Champs as a player, so to see something my team is a part of sparking that creativity is extremely rewarding and humbling. Please hit us with feedback throughout the process of the skins creation as well. We're all gonna make something kickass together, so strap in and get comfy!

In doing this, however, he also loses his mortality. Yorick outlives his beloved queen, his children, grandchildren, his kingdom and it's people. For flavor, I imagined that the collective vision of the Arclight would skew time, pulling you back out of your linear mortal view of it and replacing it with a harsh birds eye view of everything before and after. The overall idea is that while we were going for a 180 degree turn for the aesthetic of the skin, the story would still be tragic and dramatic. > > I appreciate you reading this far, would love to read whatever you come up with. I used to create stories around existing skin thematics and new ideas for skins for hours as a player, and literally never tire of seeing and reading player created content. GG amigo! I work with Tricolorstar on youtube. I could post the link once everything is done if you'd like :)
: I'm not saying that every skin line needs the same hype as the Star Guardian page, or a cinematic like Project, but a comic or webpage going a little more in depth can be appreciated. Think Pentakill.
Oh dude, I used to work in comics. I'd have us do comics for every skin release if I could. Part of delivering high quality content every two weeks to you guys is that we have to budget our time and resources appropriately. To date, comics and microsites for every skin/patch isn't the norm, but who knows where we could go in the future. We used to do champion updates and leave the existing Splash Art in the client, but now we redo them as part of that package! I concepted Pentakill Kayle, and the creative rush of seeing that whole thing come together with the album, the player created art, the microsite, the insane cinematic... it was incredible. I'd love to be able to do that level of content more!
: Um, excuse me? >with such a large player base We're still talking about Yorick right?
Hah, shots fired. Sorry to confuse, I was speaking in a broader sense of our collective players. It's unfortunate that Yorick isn't played more man, he's really fun and borderline broken in the right situations. Who knows, we see champions rise and fall in popularity all the time, Yorick's time will come. Also I work in skins, as a concept artist, so no... that isn't me trying to elude to a buff or change to gameplay (lol). I just mean that at some point players are going to put together how rewarding and fun he is to play (split push, like, all lanes GG) and it'll be crazytown.

If you think about the way the majority of players experience a new skin, it's actually not as soon as it hits PBE all over the boards, Reddit, surrender@20 etc. A lot of the story, as Chromatic Eagle rightly pointed out below, is told through the splash as the first point of story context, within the client. With Yorick we had a lot of real estate to tell some of the story within the game engine with all of his spells, minions and maiden as well. If that's not resonating for you, to be honest, that sucks to hear. I mean with such a large player base there's literally no way to please everyone, especially under the pressure of the "6 year wait" for a new Yorick skin. We knew that going in, but please know that this was anything but a "kill the memes" attempt. We all view Yorick as an incredibly underrated champion, both from gameplay and creative perspectives, and my team was absolutely foaming at the mouth to work on him. We have ton of ideas for more skins for him, as we all had a blast working on him and plan on revisiting him on a regular skin cadence. Thanks for the feedback, check out the splash when it arrives! Hey man if you need ideas for a Yorick skin, I pitched this to Katey in another thread but Pool Party Yorick, or just an aquatic theme in general. Think about it Sandcastle Cage, Giant Toy Shovel, Coral reef as his back piece, and the piece de resistance: A MERMAID MAIDEN, MERMAIDEN!!! My only complaint is that the pool party skins have already had so many contributions. I'm not sure if the theme would still work as Atlantean/Deep Sea. Maybe you could call it Beach Bro Yorick. As an aside I like the skin you guys did a great job and I'll definitely buy it day 1. I'm wondering if there is anywhere I can read about the alternate universe skin lines. I know the new Star Guardians is the first time the lore team went full out on a skin line. I think it'd be awesome to read about the thought process the skins teams go through when coming up with new designs or revisiting older ones. I'd love to read a dev blog about the Arclight/Elderwood/Project skin lines and why certain champions are chosen over others. What the champions connections are in those universes etc. I quoted you but this goes Riot Kindlejack and the whole team.
Hahaha yeah dude.... I want Pool Party 'Ricky like you wouldn't believe! Someone posted a doooooope concept of it on reddit where it was clearly drawn in mspaint or something, but the CONTENT of what was there was perfect. Mermaid-en (bless me Phreak) has to happen if we get to do that skin, damn I love that idea! As far as the stories we put into our skins, we haven't really published a lot of that stuff. A post about interesting internal lore tidbits might be a interesting. I know when I arrived I basically sat with Kindlejack and just asked him all about everything I've ever wanted to know about skins, where certain ones came from, and what the internal lore is, etc. My guess is you'll probably be seeing an increasing amount of that kind of stuff shared out over time, as we've put a lot of effort into these alternate universes. We're all absolute geeks who nerd out over these elseworld representations of the champs we love and are super hyped that we're able to funnel that kind of love and craft into the content we put out, so it'd be really cool to share some of that stuff in a broader way. Until then, hit up Kindlejack-the-all-knowing. Or ping me and I can poke his desk with a banana ;)

: Are players supposed to "get" this? Because none of that comes through in game or in client and to me makes Arclight one of the most boring and generic skin themes available - just toss in some golden light particles and done.

: What we've seen, I believe, is the pre-release. So those changes could be planned to happen. They still have two weeks to release. I love Yorick and I think the skin is pretty good. They only thing that was off to me at first is the face. It just seemed weird to me, but as long as the splash is good, I don't mind.
CAN.NOT.WAIT. for you guys to see the splash. It's gorgeous, one of my favs of any we've ever done. PREPARE!
: @Riot is there more lore on Arclight Yorick or the Arclight theme in general?
