: @Riot: Is "Star Guardian" a skin theme you want to make more of?
Yo Yousosmart! Star Guardian is absolutely a line that we want to explore further, skins team itself is comprised of a ton of Magical Girl super fans! We definitely want to make more SG skins in the future (TBD), so keep your eyes peeled for cuteness! :3 As far as our data goes players lovvvvveddddd her, like off the charts positive player response. lol **Question for the thread: **What other champions, aside from Lux, would make great Star Guardians?
: Some minor Zed audio/visual bugs that have been persisting for a few months.
Yo Desiderium! Thanks so much for this detailed write up! I've gone ahead and written bug tickets for the missing effort Vo on his shadow swap (classic, Shockblade, and Skt) and his missing idle transition on the Project skin. The effort VO on Project sounds correct to me, but I'll get an audio engineer to check it out to verify. I can't say when these will be fixed but we have them in the system now, it all depends on the audio teams bandwidth. :D

We got all of the VO, SFX, animations, and particles that we wanted, this skin was a real labor of love. We really wanted the bond between Tristana and Riggle to feel as real as possible and I think we did it based on the community's reaction to her. :P > Like I said before, I really did get that. Even though they have their issues with each other (Riggle is CLEARLY not happy to be made to dance, and Tristana seems to get frustrated with him sometimes), it's stuff like the laugh animation, some of the quotes, and even the horribly depressing death animation shows there's still a close bond, and they'd have each others backs. I think some of my favorite quotes from this skin are from buying items. "Uhhh... don't lick this" for Bloodthirster, "Nope, no, don't chew that-!" (Riggle chews that)" for Statikk Shiv, even a quote for Sunfire Cape that Tristana's would probably never buy. > If you have any more questions let me know, and I can most likely answer them! You did the Riggle ward too right? I'm honestly trying to decide whether to get the Riggle ward, or if I should stick with the Fist Bump ward I already have and have gotten attached to. Also, a few lines that the wiki list as "Unknown Champion Responses", are those referring to the Dragonslayer skins? If so, nice touch! EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing; is Riggle's name a reference to the old Wriggle's Lantern item, or was it just a cute name because it sounds close to 'Wiggle'? EDIT2: The video promo calls it "Dragon Trainer's Video Guide, Volume One" Is this a hint towards other Dragon Trainer skins in the future (Don't worry, it'll just be between us and the whole internet) Speaking personally, which part of the skin did you work on, or what was your favorite part of it's development?
>Interesting; was it intended to be a Legendary level skin back before she got her VU, or did the update give you the ability to use new tools to make it a Legendary? Yeah even back then she was going to be a Legendary, but once we started concepting we quickly realized that he old model was going to restrict us greatly. Not just from an animation standpoint but from a modeling standpoint as well, she was so tiny and compact that her proportions compared to Riggle's just didn't feel great. >You did the Riggle ward too right? I'm honestly trying to decide whether to get the Riggle ward, or if I should stick with the Fist Bump ward I already have and have gotten attached to. I did! I'm super appreciative to the animation team who allowed me to animate the ward. Since I'm currently being mentored by an animator at Riot I was super excited to get to work on an asset for League! I'm super biased in my opinion (for obvious reasons) but I would say pick up the Riggle ward since it's so friggen cute and it's one of our only wards that's actually a living creature! :3 >Also, a few lines that the wiki list as "Unknown Champion Responses", are those referring to the Dragonslayer skins? If so, nice touch! We did have plans for those lines to be triggered when you were near a champion with a Dragon Slayer skin, but due to some technical issues we weren't able to hook them up. :< >EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing; is Riggle's name a reference to the old Wriggle's Lantern item, or was it just a cute name because it sounds close to 'Wiggle'? It's more of a reference to the fact that he can never sit still! He's always wriggling around in Tristana's hands! >EDIT2: The video promo calls it "Dragon Trainer's Video Guide, Volume One" Is this a hint towards other Dragon Trainer skins in the future (Don't worry, it'll just be between us and the whole internet) I think it's safe to say that, like with most skin lines, we won't stop with a single Dragon Trainer. When more skins come out and who they are for are up for community speculation at this point. >Speaking personally, which part of the skin did you work on, or what was your favorite part of it's development? I was primarily responsible for the QA portion of the skin. I made sure we found and fixed all the bugs and that the skin itself was up the the quality bar that skins team has set for Legendary skins! The best part of the development of this skin was seeing Riggle come to life, we kinda already knew how Trist would act but Riggle was a whole new character!

: @Riot KateyKhaos - Dragon Trainer Tristana
Yo! So I was trying to think of any like note worthy things in development of the skin and I have a few. * The skin was actually started over a year ago before Tristana's visual update, and by started I mean concepted based on her old model. But once we saw what champion update was cookin (CUTE STUFF) we decided to wait and re-concept her with the new model in mind. With the new model we were able to make Riggle bigger and it gave us ultimate freedom with her animations. * One of the first animation to be completed was her AMAZING death animation....the entire team (like 40 people) groaned and made sad noises when it was shown in our team review. : Someone done did it
I actually really love this concept and I think it could work, but she would definitely need new VO. The great thing about skins is we can break away from the base and re-imagine the character in an alternate fantasy (within reason). An alternative to this would be to take the skin in a more "Evil Usagi" type direction, that might fit a little closer to Jinx's normal personality.
: Star Guardian Poppy... DO IT, RIOT. JUST DO IT.
Good Lord Yes.....I need it. I want our little grumpy yordle to do cute magical girl poses in her recall!!!! ;_;

Yo Simple Tora! It's actually better for us to get the feedback sooner than later, If we get feedback too late we might not have time to make changes. Thanks for trying to tank for us though, much appreciated. ^_^ I'm going to go ahead and send the feedback about the passive to Nunu's particle artist, no promises but I think we can update this. Thanks for the feedback biologist11!
: @Riot, since Worlds skins are unplanned...
Yo Tomb of Insomnia, No, we don't plan ahead when it comes to Worlds skins. There isn't really a way for us to plan since it's the winners choice on what skin is made, and it's not always the champ they played in the final game. So, no the Worlds skins don't interrupt the planned release of a champion skin in production.
: @Riot skins team
Yo Da Dwagonswayer! Skins team currently has no plans to go back an update older skins like Forsaken Olaf. This skin will probably be updated when Olaf himself get's a rework. What he will look like is an unknown for now, champion update will be in charge of that.

Right now the main criteria is impact in professional and ranked play during the season. We also look to fill out team comps if possible, so not picking two jungles two seasons in a row. As others have stated "impact" in the season can vary from person to person, so X champion may not feel like the right choice to some number of players.
: Hooray for New Victorious Skin, but...
Yo! I just wanted to pop in an say some things! I can understand people being upset because a champion they play didn't get picked or that they feel another champion deserved it more. That's the issue with these types of skins there are multiple valid opinions on the issue, but in the end we can only choose one champion. If we choose X champion then players who like Y champion will be upset and vice versa, either way we make someone unhappy. I'm curious as to how you guys think the Victorious skin should be determined, what criteria is important to you?

I talked about the purple ancient flames and everything. Cool idea but I gotta ask if a Rioter saw it?!
Yo Goilo! I can't recall seeing your post, but I can tell you our inspiration for the skin. Our idea for this skin was a demon possessed Brand that summons demons and soul fire, a demonmancer for lack of a better word. Sorry, i know that description isn't super detailed or interesting but sometimes skin ideas are just a short blurb. That blurb is then fleshed out by a concept artist, they create the look of what "soul fire" looks like or what Brand's demons look like, ect.
: YES. DEAR GOD YES. FINALLY. ALL THESE YEARS.
Yo Voidac! We're really happy you like Spirit Fire Brand! So much excitement! :D

: Did Riot forget about Academy skins?
Yo If Ahri Was Real! We tend to stagger skin releases through out the patch to allow each set of skins to get their own promotion/hype without eating into other skins that might be coming out in that same patch. Every skin(or skin set) gets its time in the spotlight that way.
: I'm Betting These Project Skins are Gonna Have a Shared Splash

: My general reaction was 'Ekko gets another skin already? It took over a year for Diana/Lissandra/so many others to get their second skin since they decided to release only one skin on release, and Ekko gets his in two months. There had better be a good Diana/Liss skin in the works, Riot!'
> [{quoted}](name=Hellioning,realm=NA,application-id=A8FQeEA8,discussion-id=JsAE83Bg,comment-id=00000001,timestamp=2015-08-05T17:58:51.781+0000) > > My general reaction was 'Ekko gets another skin already? It took over a year for Diana/Lissandra/so many others to get their second skin since they decided to release only one skin on release, and Ekko gets his in two months. There had better be a good Diana/Liss skin in the works, Riot!' So, we have tons of skins in various stages of production at all times. I can't speak on what skins are currently slotted but there any many and many of them are for champions who are in desperate need of a new skin. We try and cover champions as evenly as possible in terms of skin cadence, but you have to understand that as the amount of champions total increases the time between each champions new skin will go up as well, this isn't a 50 champion game any more. I do agree that this should give us more incentive to prioritize champions who need some skin love. As skins has communicated in the past unexpected issues, VU blockers, and in game events can also extend the times between champion skins.
Ecodeath (NA)
: @riot why is ekko getting another skin so soon
Yo Ecodeath! So yes, ever since we moved from two lower scope launch skins per champion to one higher scope skin we have waited a bit to release new skins for new champs. In this situation our decision making was two fold: first off we loved this theme for Ekko and we didn't want his newness to keep the skin from being made, and secondly this is kind of a test for us. Do you guys like getting a new skin for a new champ sooner than later? We want your feedback! I'm not saying that this is going to be something that happens normally now, but it is a test case for us. So yeah if the community hates it, or loves it we want to hear your opinions.
: Ahri
Yo Lieutenantrage! Dynasty Ahri isn't dressed as a school girl she's actually wearing a variation of a Hanbok, which is a type of traditional Korean formal wear.
Shénzhì (EUW)
: Academy Vladimir: The huge hands (5.16)
Yo Shénzhì! Most skins are applied to the characters existing rig. So, we needed to keep his hands large so they would match the weighting/proportions of his existing rig. If we didn't match the models and made his hands smaller they wouldn't animate properly. We can sometimes get away with making pizza feet smaller since feet movement is mostly up and down, but in general we try and keep character proportions as consistent as possible on all skins.
: A red answer o.o In my first thread ever O.O K I asked Vel'Koz for a portrait and he agreed. http://i.imgur.com/HO6fgBL.jpg

I fully support Star Guardian skins for every champion in the game. Also, Star Guardian Vel'Koz needs more blush marks. @u@
: @SkinsTeam Silly question about skins?
Yo Happy Poro! >>What exactly do you guys take into consideration when choosing champions for skins? Is it more of a "oh I have a cool idea that will go with _ really well" and immediately start on it? Or is it a "which champion doesn't have a lot of skins yet?" approach? So the answer is both! We have several different types of ideation meetings when coming up with skins. Some meetings are specifically set up to ideate on a specific champion while other meetings are set up around a theme or event. The theme/event meetings are pretty much open to any champion, but we try and keep champions that have recently gotten a skin off the table, unless we come up with a skin idea is just phenomenal.
Vistha Kai (EUNE)

: @Riot Skin creation process questions
Yo Psycho Ducky! So there isn't a short answer for this so bear with me, I'll try and go through each one of your points. >Does the process start with a skin idea or a "this champ needs a skin" thought? So it can start with either. We generally do four types of ideations. * **Champion specific** - So we go into the meeting knowing we want to ideate on one champion specifically. * ** Skin line/theme specific **- We go into the ideation with a theme in mind, with almost no champions off limits. (champs up for reworks are excluded ;_;) * **Tier Specific** - These are typicly for 750's and Ultimate skins, and again no champ is off limits, but the reworks. In these meetings we are generally trying to get a team of 3-5 skins within a theme that work at the 750 price tier. * **Event **- So this one is similar to skin line/theme but it's for events like Pool Party or Harrowing which happen on a yearly basis and will have additional supporting interactive content. >What causes you to decide one champ is worthy of a skin over another? We don't think of champions like that at all. Our goal is to make bad ass skins for every champion in the game, regardless of popularity. The decision of who get's the skin is again based on a few factors. * Can this champion fully fulfill this thematic? * When was the last time this champion got a skin? * What does their existing skins look like, and does this theme overlap with any of their existing skins? * If we are limited to a certain number - who are the strongest ideas overall, not just model wise. So to speak to that last bullet point I think Pool Party is a great example to use as an illustration. When you look at the champions in our game, lets be honest, all of them could get a pool party skin, they all work. So it just comes down to making tough cuts, since we can't make them all. ;_; >Is there some bank of ideas for skins/general skin concepts that you pull from? We do have a backlog of skin ideas from internal submission and from the community. After every skin ideation we detail a log of ideas that were cool, but didn't make the cut for whatever reason. We also try and scour the boards, reddit, and other sites to get a pulse on what players are interested in. Some times is easy to see trends (Star Guarding Lux) and other times the idea of what a champions next skin should be is more ambiguous. >Is there any sort of schedule for who gets a skin next or is it simply based on what feels best? So yes and no, but mostly yes. :3 We do keep track of when the last time a champion had a skin was and that does come into play. In those cases we tend to do champion specific ideations in order to get a skin slotted for them. There are cases though where we will make skins for champions because they fit really well into an event and it just makes sense. And as always there are unforeseen obstacles that can cause skins to be delayed of even scrapped, and that can cause the time between skin release to increase. >and lastly.. how come warwick who has had many skins got to be part of the marauder/warden release but diana couldn't be a part of it when i feel it would thematically work for her.. woulda been so cool.. hm? Yes, Marauder/Warden is a skin idea that would totally fit Diana! I remember a lot of players echoing that same sentiment around the release of those skins. I think that this is a similar case to Pool Party where almost any champion would look sick with a Marauder/Warden skin. Warden Nami pls. As far as his skin number is concerned, Warwick hadn't had a skin since late 2011 so he was way over due, and since he's an older champion he's going to have a lager number of skins compared to most of our champions. Sorry for the huge wall of text, but I see these questions floating around a lot and I figured; why not explain? Hope this was informative!
: No mid laner in new pool party group, why not Syndra?
Yo Fuzzy Owl! Lulu mid is still a thing, she's pretty versatile! But that being said we could pretty much make a pool party skin for any champion in the game, there isn't any specific champion that I can think of that wouldn't be a good fit for pool party. And that's where problems come up because tons of players ask why their main didn't get a pool party skin, because all of them could fit, lol. It's just a matter of time before everyone has one and you guys are sick of the thematic. :P
Eyrgos (NA)
: @Galetta, update on Quinn's expedited MTU/TU?
Yo Eyrgos, So, for context I didn't work here two years ago and I don't work with Iron Stylus so all of the information I've gathered is recent stuff. I talked to an Analyst who works on the Champion Update team, and as far as the team is concerned at this time they don't have any plans to release a Quinn TU, the planned one or otherwise.
: How did Lee Sin get a boxing skin before Vi?
Yo! So, Knockout Vi is still a skin that can happen in the future! I mean we generally don't stop after one skin....or five. :3
: @Skins Team: Will you ever go over old skins again?
Yo ZylotheWolfbane! So, short answer is that skins team currently has no plans to go back an update older skins. The task of updating older champions and skins has been taken over by the Champion Update Team. So if these skins were to be updated in the future it would be done by Champ Up. Additionally, These types of changes are typically done during a Champions VU rather than one skin at a time. Hope this was helpful!

I think you guys need to ship a new skin along with their complete VU.** Minimum 975 RP tier, tired of 750 failures on champs who've waited years for a new skin.

Thryale (NA)
: don't you mean... "outrageous"? ....I'll see myself out now....
OMG I'M THE WORST. ;_; {{champion:44}} pls.
: I think the question is more of why don't you plan the skins to include particle changes, rather than not include them and then make the excuse adding them would add delays. If you planned the skins with particle changes, there wouldn't be delays, since its planned. Likewise, testing would occur with those particle changes.
Yo AbyssionKnight! We only plan for 750's to have no particle changes. 975 skins and higher are always planned to include new particle work and we schedule them accordingly.
Tamur (NA)
: Now that we have Lux's girly skin...
Yo! When he get's his rework he can get all kinds of skins, including a bad ass one! I personally want Sweetheart/Heartseeker Taric....that splash art would be insane. @u@
: Out of curiosity, can you specify what determines when a skin is "we don't want to leave this price point" and when it is "we want to make the skin the right way, and it will be in a price that fits that"? I don't think there's a way that this skin can reasonably keep the Original Orbs and still maintain it's "Queen of Diamonds" name. "Queen of Clubs" possibly, since the Clubs logo is made out of three circles, but not Diamonds.
Yo DrCyanide! We generally don't start out with a price tier in mind, unless it's a 750. Once we have an idea we think about what elements are needed to fulfill that skin fantasy. For example Project: Yasuo - he needed futuristic particles, sounds, and VO processing to fulfill that fantasy. Not every skin we create needs that level of work, the needs of each skin are evaluated individually. With 750's specifically we design skins that will need little to no particle work. So from the ideation phase we are thinking about designing around the base particles.
: @Riot, Playing Cards skins (Shared Splash art idea)
iLuma (NA)
: How hard is it to do a simple color swap on abilities?
Yo! So there are several factors that prevent us from simply changing particle colors on skins. The first and biggest issue is time. We have a limited number of particle artist on the team, they are ALWAYS busy. You have to keep in mind that they are working on multiple skins at a time that range from Legendary to 975 RP skins. When someone says "Hey, just change the particles", that would require an artist to stop working on their current skin and start work on this new project. That takes time and it would break our schedule and cause multiple skins to be delayed. There are only so many hours in the day and only so many artists. We plan out skins months in advance so we can create as many skins as possible each year and if that schedule gets interrupted by a delay there are ripple effects. :< The 2nd issue is testing. All of our skins go through rigorous testing and different test suites depending on the changes to the skin. 750 skins go through a smaller test suite that requires less time to complete due to the fact that fewer changes were made. We see it time and time again that the more changes we make to a skin the more bugs we find on that skin and on the older skins that champion has. Again we only have so many testers and so many hours in the day. Additionally if we were to overhaul Syndra and make her a 975 she would have to go through testing all over again which would delay her greatly.
: Can we make Queen of Diamonds Syndra a 975 and give her red particles?
Yo! I wanted to jump in and talk about Syndra a bit. Yes, as people have mentioned in this thread we want to create various tiers of skins for each champion. Syndra currently only has 975 skins so we wanted to create a skin for her that didn't require any particle changes. The addition of the purple panels in her outfit are there to match the skin to her base particles. If you guys still feel like the particles are clashing we can look into adjusting the outfit. As of now we have no plans to add any new particles to Queen of Diamonds Syndra.
: Heartseeker Ashe lost her sparkles D:
Yo! I looked into this and it looks like whatever program S@20 uses to grab content broke the glitter particles, BUT only in their program. All her glitter is alive and well on PBE. :D

I don't know many other companies that would care to do so with their customers. > > My biggest question for the skins team is why they don't make more skins that cater to the desires of the players. For example, I rarely see a Galio or Zilean in game but I see loads of Zeds. Wouldn't the public be happier with a legendary Zed skin instead of Galio wearing a tuxedo? This would also increase the profits of your company so it seems like the only downside is that the artists of the skins would not feel as artistically free to create what they want and players of fringe champions would feel left out. > > I'm not saying make every skin solely based on what the majority of the public wants, but at least try to cater once or twice a year through either a poll or some research within the community. Yo! So when we make skins we try to make a skin for ever champion rather than 3-4 skins for the most popular champions at the time. If we just wanted to make a ton of money then yes we would only make skins for the top 20 champions at any given time. That would leave over 110 champions without skins for years at a time(yes that still happens now). There are mains for ever champion in the game and they deserve skins just like everyone else. We are trying our best to get out as wide a range of champion skins as we can, but it can take time with over 120 in the game currently. As far as Zed skins goes, I can't really speak on whether or not we're working on a skin for him (legal reasons obvi). What I can say is that there are situations where we have an awesome idea that we can't use right away. A good example of this is event skins and champion updates. Let's say , hypothetically, that the community has been crying out for Pool Pary Zed, and we say yeah let's make this! But let's say it's Sptember and we want Pool Party Zed to come out with 4 other pool party skins in a huge in game event. We would hold into the idea and slot it for say June/July so we can have a huge awesome event! The idea isn't thrown away or rejected it's just slotted for a later date. Additionally major kit changes and/or visual updates can extended times for new skins. We don't want to create a skin that will be remade in 3-4 months by the champion update team, that just creates unnecessary work for both teams. Hopefully this was helpful. :P

Ok so this makes explaining this a bit easier. So in ideations typically we start by defining the champion: their personality, kit, big reads ect. That helps us lock onto core features of the champion that need to be preserved and/or highlighted in the new skin. > > For Zilean, obviously, his clock is pretty much his biggest read. In his ideation a good amount of ideas were focused around his clock and one person pitched Blood Moon with the idea that his clock was a gong. Specifically tying the skin in with some one our newer Blood Moon skins that have recalls with musical/kabuki themes, this also helped our animators lock in a recall idea super early on. Additionally the white haired kabuki inspired mask would be another good Zilean read. > > So, we did come up with other ideas in that session, I think 3 -4 went to the initial concept phase. But even after this initial concept phase we felt that Blood Moon was the strongest concept. We had a cool skin idea, recall idea, some good strong reads, and a theme that was different from his existing skins. I get all this, but the biggest question still remains: Was the only focus concerning BM Zilean just to get a skin done for him? Did the team consider making a skin worthy of a four-year wait or did they just make this one with the goal of getting one released. Nothing that's been said suggests otherwise and this is what makes BM Zilean a complete disappointment to me. I get that the team put a lot of hard work into Blood Moon Zilean (not that I can see it since it looks like a palette swap to me), but I don't like the idea that the goal was just to release a skin and not take into account the long wait since his last one. Not since Mordekaiser is now the champion waiting the longest for a new skin (followed by Yorick, Sion, Kassadin and Taric). Are we to expect more of the same, for the skins team to just "fill out their back log" and continue to offer lower and lower expectations? Is this what Riot has become, the company that just releases stuff for the sake of releasing stuff and not bother to make their product as awesome as it can be?

Is this what Riot has become, the company that just releases stuff for the sake of releasing stuff and not bother to make their product as awesome as it can be? Yo! No the focus for this skin was, as it is for ever skin, to create an awesome skin that our players will love. What each person considers a "worthy" skin differs from person to person. I personally like this skin a lot, and I get how you feel that I'm biased since I work on the skins team. I just feel like your complaints are more of a personal opinion (you wanted a time themed skin) rather than a critical opinion of the skin itself. These are just my observations based on your comments. We did put a lot of though and time into this skin, he has a completely new model, new recall animation, and all new particles. I don't feel like anything about this skin was rushed, and it certainly wasn't just put out willy nilly. Also in regards to "filling out our backlog", I was referring to awesome skin ideas that we come up with in ideations that are put in our skins backlog or reference library for later use. We may come up with 5-6 ideas that are awesome but we can only use one at any given time. These ideas are then brought back up in future ideations and can still become fully realized skins in the future.
