: A lot of other Rioters have left some great responses. As an engineering lead responsible for some hiring, I figured I'd add my own thoughts on just this question: _What are some of the more important non-technical aspects of a new hire that you look for in interviews & resume reviews?_ First and foremost, at Riot we really do care about our core values as embodied in our manifesto: https://www.riotgames.com/en/who-we-are I know at many organizations, these sort of statements sound like someone toeing the company line. Yet at Riot, I believe we really do aspire to these ideals. The idea of focusing on player experience first, for example, comes up nearly every day when we're deciding if and how to take some action or make some change. Secondly, at Riot, we want to have a very open, transparent culture that encourages honest and direct feedback. That's hard. We don't always do it right, but it matters to us and we keep at it. This means it's crucial that we bring in teammates who share this interest, have a high degree of communication skills, and aren't afraid to challenge convention and champion a cause. Consequently, a fair bit of the interview process will focus on "soft skills", self-awareness, and how one responds to feedback and challenges. Finally, there are a host of other skills that we look for: leadership, collaboration, product thinking, process discipline, initiative, curiosity, grit, kindness and being a core gamer. At Riot, engineers are expected to be much more than code monkeys. We expect engineers to be a crucial part in game development and design and a defender of our culture and our players. So while solid technical skills are a must, there's so much more to being an exceptional teammate. Happy to go into more detail if anyone has specific questions!

We really do look for more than just strong coders, and we've put a lot of effort into thinking about career growth in a way that emphasizes the different strengths that great Engineers can (and do!) exhibit. There's a series of articles on our [Tech Blog](https://engineering.riotgames.com/) called Debugging Titles that goes into this further - I'd highly recommend checking them out if this kind of thing interests you: * [Debugging Titles: Part I](https://engineering.riotgames.com/news/debugging-titles-part-i) * [Debugging Titles: Part II](https://engineering.riotgames.com/news/debugging-titles-part-ii) * [Debugging Titles: Part III](https://engineering.riotgames.com/news/debugging-titles-part-iii)

I've become quite attached to the stormraider's Cassiopeia playstyle in particular. My favorite thing about it was that I had enough MS to go with Sorcerer's Shoes instead of Boots of Swiftness, which felt like a meaningful power add. I'm not involved with any of the balance stuff, so don't have much insight into plans for other Stormraiders users - just chiming in as somebody who plays Aurelion/Taliyah/Ryze somewhat frequently. But FWIW, I've found Phase Rush to feel pretty good on Ryze, and I've found some success with Comet/Glacial Augment on Taliyah. Though, the Taliyah ones do play differently than Stormraiders did, so it isn't really the same thing. Personally, I wish these kinds of "dps mages" could run some kind of Precision+Sorcery path. Imagine something like this, if you pretend that Press the Attack and Legend: Bloodline also worked for spells: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/preseason-update/8000-8005?build=00120138 (or maybe a variant on Fleet Footwork, to get that old Stormraider's feeling)

Have you tried Glacial Augment on Aurelion Sol? I really liked that when I tried it out; plus, going into Inspiration let me get a good amount of ambient MS, which felt really good on him. Here was the page I used: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/preseason-update/8300-8351?build=41101248

: Regarding her passive... If a champ is hybrid, like {{champion:42}} {{champion:24}} or sometimes {{champion:35}}.....what shield will she get? Is it based off of what damage the target has more of at that particular instance, or is it based off of something else?

Is it based off of what damage the target has more of at that particular instance, or is it based off of something else? Riot Jag gave a more in-depth answer [over on Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/5e5sm2/champion_reveal_camille_the_steel_shadow/da9zkhg/), but the short version is that she adapts her shield based off the type of damage the target has done throughout the game. So she always gets the best kind of shield against the target she hits.
: You didn't really answer the question really. I would say she is in the more irelia/vi category. You may call them divers but we call them bruisers for that shared synergy of tinity, maybe an extra damage item, into full tank.
Diver is one of the subclasses we have for champions, which Camille falls into. That includes people like Irelia and Vi. You can see the full breakdown of subclasses [here](http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/3A5uuBw7-champion-subclass-list).

: Something totally unrelated to Camille, but a feedback never or less. I love the comic, I love the style, the only downside is that my eyes are crappy (imagine thick glasses dude, that's me), and I can't zoom into the text. The border of the webpage zooms, but the images don't and it hurts my eyes trying to read something so small. Is it possible to tell the publishing team in the future to increase the font size? or to make it so that the images can be zoomed in so I can read and look at every detail? Or maybe it was just Chrome doing a disservice to me.

This is very interesting. Ekko having parents was an important detail when we were working on him - we specifically DIDN'T want him to be an orphaned Zaunite. : Do you think we'll be able to see more champions like Taliyah from a personality/writing perspective? I remember one of the recent articles talked about how Taliyah as a character is more 'grounded' (the pun was there to begin with) with regards to her personality - how most of the champions range from highly competent to pseudo-godlike and kings and warriors and how Taliyah's strengths writing-wise aren't quite as blown up as that, as she's more a younger character who hasn't gotten a full hold of her powers yet. I think this focus more on weakness along with strength is something that's been missing from a character standpoint in League as of late.
> [{quoted}](name=Zodai,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=Q5Rti3k0,comment-id=011e,timestamp=2016-05-13T00:06:05.831+0000) > > Do you think we'll be able to see more champions like Taliyah from a personality/writing perspective? > > I remember one of the recent articles talked about how Taliyah as a character is more 'grounded' (the pun was there to begin with) with regards to her personality - how most of the champions range from highly competent to pseudo-godlike and kings and warriors and how Taliyah's strengths writing-wise aren't quite as blown up as that, as she's more a younger character who hasn't gotten a full hold of her powers yet. I think this focus more on weakness along with strength is something that's been missing from a character standpoint in League as of late. Hitting this note was very important to us on Taliyah, because you're absolutely right - we haven't done it in a long time. That said, it was also a very fine balance we had to hit. Early versions of Taliyah had her being more unsure, and even hesitant, of her power, but that didn't work as well. It didn't make sense to have a timid young Taliyah facing down Azir in Shurima, for instance, so we shifted up her degree of mastery and her confidence. Though I wouldn't say that her personality or narrative are focused on weakness; she's still learning, sure, but she is very capable and confident at this moment. I think that in the grand scheme of things, most of our characters are going to fall on the highly competent, peak-of-their-power side of things. They are Champions, after all, so they need to live up to that. But Taliyah is a good reminder that there is more than one way to be a Champion, and she is every bit as deserving of that title as the rest!

In playtests, my rune page was Magic Pen marks, Armor seals, Magic Resist glyphs, and Flat AP quints. For masteries, I ran 12-18-0 with Thunderlord's Decree. They were called "Weaving Stones" and "Breaking Bones", respectively. =)

Who are the other elemental weavers in league of legends? Taliyah grew up in a tribe of weavers, so weaving is how she understands to control her magic. That method of control is very unique to her - there aren't any other "elemental weavers" in Runeterra.

: Riot, I love Taliyah's special interactions
Glad you like them! Taliyah responding to jokes is my favorite new VO trigger. I'm pretty sure the attack lines that are unique to areas on the map are new too. The hope is that including more lines like this will help make the characters feel more organic and alive, while also mixing up the play experience a little bit every time.
: Hey, Riot (And specially @Thermal Kitten)
As a few people mentioned already, Taliyah speaks her lines much faster than some of the others (Aurelion Sol in particular). This video is also missing some lines specifically for her launch skin, so there are some more out there. All in all, we recorded a similar number of lines for both her and Aurelion Sol. That said, "more lines with every champ!" isn't necessarily our goal. We want to use VO to reinforce the character; our pompous space dragon is going to be a bit more wordy, and Taliyah is going a little more, well, down to earth. One other thing this video doesn't show is that we have some new _types_ of lines for Taliyah. She has the usual "taunt an enemy" lines, but also some different kinds of interactions. Try telling her a joke!
: Taliyah Fanart ^_^
This makes me so happy. So awesome!
: I'd be curious to know what those stories were. Seems like the city of shurima has a negative legacy? How did her people view nasus?
At the very least, there are the stories she heard from the merchants: > “It’s a bit more common now that your people’s lost city has risen.” > > Taliyah looked up. “What?” > > “Word has it the rivers flow backward too.” The merchant waved a hand in the air, poking fun at the mysteries of a far-off people he considered simple. “All because your bird-god has returned from the grave.” > > “Whatever he is don’t make any difference. It all threatens trade.” The second merchant joined the first. “They say he aims to collect his people. Misses his slaves and all that.” > > “Good thing you’re here and not there, girl,” the first merchant added. But possibly other stories too, either as a child in Shurima, or on her travels. Not sure how much of ancient Shurima persisted in myth though. I'll bug Jaredan =).

: I've said it once I'll say it again; opinions are painted by the available information. No one in Runeterra aside from Xerath and Azir lived to know Azir freed all of Shurima's slaves. Only Nasus and Sivir are likely to have met the now Ascended Azir. The world lacks knowledge pertaining to anything Azir's actually doing; they only have rumors to go on. We'll see if Taliyah has a cool enough head to let reason prevail when she has that meeting with the emperor.

Sharjo (EUW)
: > Not sure if we are talking about origins here... especially the comment with the "inspire" makes me think. Well that depends; how does Runeterra as a whole view yordles? That's actually pretty complicated and hard to discern considering we don't know where the horribly named Yordle Lands are in new Runeterra. Assuming there's some similarities geography wise to old Runeterra then yordles come from a part of the world so remote that it's honestly acceptable that some humans have no idea what the sod a yordle is and have never met them. Before you yell at me for that one consider the following about Poppy, if we consider a massive continent like Valoran and her travelling alone and by foot: - Poppy's aim is to get to Demacia. - Poppy's journey starts in Bandle City, on the _opposite side of Valoran_. - She'd have to go through the Kumungu, - Then through the hundreds of miles wide Shurima desert, - Then around Mount Targon, - Then what would be the Kaladoun if that still exists, - And then through the entire Kingdom of Demacia to reach the capital, which is the most likely place she'll go. That's a LONG distance. Let's remember that yordles evolved in the jungles of Valoran and only resembled modern day yordles in any way a few thousand years ago, back when human societies were already developed. The oldest record we as readers have of yordles living in Runeterra is Gnar's cave drawings, which are likely from several thousand years ago, when the Frozen Watchers had a massive conquering of Valoran going on thanks to their Iceborn servants. And let's also not forget their empire was not the first major human civilization of recorded Valorian history; the Madelords and Protectorate were. With that in mind yordles likely only entered the scene of developed societies in Runeterra fairly recently, and seeing them outside of the yordle lands would've been unheard of for the longest time, or got you accused for being drunk and seeing diminutive furry people. Now on to the inspiration line, well really that sounds like a yordle thing to do considering how upbeat, optimistic and cheery they are. Considering yordles being so unheard of until more recent times, potentially up until as early as a century ago if we really want to push it, then any stories that actually had yordles in them might depict them as just being inspiring as individuals across the board, due to them being so naturally positive. I can imagine old folk tales where people meet yordles and it was thanks to the yordle's inspiration people managed to overcome adversity. Of course that could all be a load of bollocks, what do I know?

Shen, Eye of Twilight Sona, Maven of the Strings Zyra, Rise of the Thorns Nothing too major, was just curious who had titles like Poppy's.
There's also Morgana, Fallen Angel

I do think he'd pass the test though! What about someone like Riven, who is marching ahead despite her great losses, and trying to find a way to reforge Noxus? She certainly has a very powerful spirit, she reforges her blade, and even stuns people with her spiritual power. I'm wondering if her resolve to change things qualifies her as being in motion.

I think it depends on how you view Riven. The way you described her, it sounds like she's in motion. Personally, I see Riven as somebody who's a little lost right now. She had conviction once, but that's since been shattered. And nothing has replaced it (yet). In my mind, Riven could benefit from some clarity and purpose. Less dwelling on the past, more driving towards reforging what is broken.

: I feel she'd dislike him due to his inability to adapt to the situation properly. This might just be how I view it, but rather than taking the hits that life swings like the rest of us, he presses the redo button to put it in his favor. Obviously he wants to do good with what he can do, I just think he has problems accepting things and moving on. Which makes sense, given his environment and the fact that he's a teenager.
> [{quoted}](name=Ralanr,realm=NA,application-id=6kFXY1kR,discussion-id=qOUo9xAK,comment-id=00000000,timestamp=2015-11-25T19:35:07.737+0000) > > I just think he has problems accepting things and moving on. Which makes sense, given his environment and the fact that he's a teenager. I think this is very true for Ekko right now, and this is the kind of stagnation that Illaoi wouldn't appreciate. Swim forward, or drown. Not sure how she'd feel about the Z-Drive in general though - maybe it's ok, as long as you're using it to (ultimately) move forward? I don't really know... WAAARGHbobo or Jaredan might have some thoughts on this!
: Okay. Now what if you're not playing an incredibly mobile champion?

You mean somebody like Garen or Darius? I think they'd be quite happy to scrap with her up close while she auto-attacks something that isn't them. I'm think that if the pattern of "skillshot grab into auto-attack reset, plus AOE damage" was so unbearable, we'd see Blitz and Nautilus be really prevalent toplane. There is lots of counterplay to the ability. But at the end of the day, if you get hit by a champ's marquee ability, you shouldn't get to just ignore it completely.
: But Illaoi is melee, so shes going to be right next to the spirit anyways so if you go to attack her...you're basically standing on your spirit (if you're melee). And this isn't even considering what happens if you get ganked and you have to run and can't deal damage back. It sucks really hard and feels really bad because there is literally nothing you can do.

It sucks really hard and feels really bad because there is literally nothing you can do. Because tentacles (and her Q) swing in a line, you should be able to find an angle to fight where she isn't hitting you AND the spirit at the same time. Renekton was particularly good at this in playtests, by diving behind her. On live, I've seen Fiora and Yasuo also have success moving around and getting the good angles. Her E is certainly a strong ability - there's no denying that. We'll be keeping an eye on that one. But it is her signature ability, and a good Illaoi should be able to use it very effectively. And when I look at things like Blitz/Nautilus/Thresh hooks, I think they're all stronger and more immediately dangerous.
: Since I missed the great QnA about illoui....
I'm not so sure that Ekko is in motion currently. For a guy who clearly has issues with Piltover and dislikes what certain Zaunites have done to his city, he's not really doing anything about it. And he certainly has the potential to do something! Ekko probably needs something to really set him in motion, and I think Illaoi's test would be one heck of a kickstart. I do think he'd pass the test though!
: Could you shed some light on her "E" during game play? I'm curious to know what a melee is to do against her top lane as it seems you can stay and fight where your soul is getting crushed (literally) or you can run where she gets free damage on you as you run, you are denied xp & gold from last hitting and you are slow to come back.

Keep in mind that if Illaoi is hitting your spirit, she's not hitting you directly (unless you line up for a Q...). The damage the spirit echoes to you isn't 1-to-1, so you should be able to win those trades if she focuses the spirit. Plus, the damage you deal lowers the spirit duration, making it less likely to get turned into a Vessel. And don't forget that it is a skillshot, and gets blocked by minions, so use that to your advantage too!
LordAlaa (EUNE)
: I have been following the Q&A regularly, and there is a question I wanted to ask since forever :D Which comes first, the lore or the mechanic ? Do you always start with a mechanic that you think is fun, then you think of a good story for it, or the opposite? How much of the design process is influenced by the community ? Do some champion suggestions find their way to a champion kit? I think of Illaoi as the opposite of {{champion:268}} , he can move his minions to his target, while {{champion:420}} moves her target to her minions. What made you think this idea will work as a champion ? Do you think {{champion:420}} can fully utilize her kit in challenger tier for example ? I mean it is not hard to avoid her tentacles or kill them for experienced players, right ?

Do you always start with a mechanic that you think is fun, then you think of a good story for it, or the opposite? It's really a collaborative effort between Design, Narrative, and Art (which we collectively call the DNA). We often start from one spot, but iterate constantly across all three axes. So for Illaoi, we knew we wanted to make a "Brawler" (which morphed into Juggernaut as we defined that class better). From there, we gather lots of story ideas, gameplay ideas, and art ideas. These will then inspire other directions, so we talk about what's cool, and iterate from there. We keep cycling around, refining what's cool until we feel that we have a solid character, and then we start working on realizing that in-game.
: So you're adamantly refusing to address what is a blatant problem because you don't like my tone? Awesome. Glad to know riot's employees don't give a shit about the problems they introduce that lead to bad player experiences.

Awesome. Glad to know riot's employees don't give a shit about the problems they introduce that lead to bad player experiences. Look, I get that you have concerns. But Meddler and Beat Punchbeef have both been addressing gameplay related concerns in this very thread. We're not refusing to address things. Real talk - the way you phrased your initial post is not a question, nor an identification of a problem. It's an assertion of your opinion, and quite frankly, it was really, really snarky. From what I can tell, you aren't looking for a discussion, you're just trying to rile people up. I'm not really interested in going there, and I think the downvotes speak to the fact that your fellow players don't appreciate that approach either.
: Riot, your work on your characters is amazing and you give them so much personality and feeling! The community seemed to instantly connect with Illaoi (the puns...too much). How have you guys (and gals) challenged yourselves to produce better content? How have you been able to set the bar higher each time? As an aspiring game artist I have to ask: Can we get a book of League designs and iterative sketches some time in the future? Maybe some story or game design bits? I would **so** pay for that.

Maybe some story or game design bits? I would **so** pay for that. Thanks for the kind words. We have definitely challenged ourselves to deliver better and better champions lately, and I hope players feel that we've been successful there! For Illaoi, I think the big thing was to identify the core of what was cool, and really execute on it - then layer in the depth. In this case, it was the "kraken priestess" bit. At a base level, she'll wreck you with tentacles - and that's cool and fun, and I think that comes through really well. But, if you want to go deeper, you have all the religion pieces, the exact nature of her test, her relationships to other Bilgewater champs and the Shadow Isles, and so on. She has a good, fun gameplay experience to make her a good CHAMPION in-game, but there's a lot going on under the surface to make her an interesting CHARACTER in-world as well as. When those two things reinforce each other... that's where the magic really happens!

: You're being down voted for a bad discussion starter, not for asking about balance. Look to the guy who asked about why she has such high base AD as a good example. He asked a balance related question in a way that could actually be answered, instead of just phrasing his personal opinions in the way of questions.

I've always imagined him just shrugging off the test completely; to me, he's so overwhelmingly "in motion" that the test just washes right over him.
