Hey everyone! Sound designer for the K/DA skins here. Thought I'd chime in about the points you mentioned above, which were very sound arguments by the way. See what I did there? Sound? Anyone? Okay so! First things first. For context, there are chordal synth stabs on Eve's Q spikes, and they randomize so that every time you hit her 3 spikes, you get slightly different melodies. Similarly to what's going on with K/DA Ahri's 3 dashes on her ult. During development, I did have a version of the spikes that was very heavy with the synth/musical elements, and week after week I consistently got the feedback from Evelynn mains that while it was cool, after clearing jungle camp after jungle camp it became extremely fatiguing quickly. Not only that, that high frequency TICK TICK TICK of Eve's spikes are a pretty iconic part of her kit since her VGU. I really tried to hit a tasteful balance where you do hear the music, but it doesn't get super fatiguing to the ears when clearing camps. However! After exploring some of the feedback I got when the skins were on PBE, I did notice a trend where folks were hoping to hear more of the musical elements on Eve's Q spikes. So in service of that, I submitted a change that downplayed the spike elements and increased the volume of the musical layers. **That change is currently on PBE and will patch out to all regions in 8.23** On a broader note to the point above, one of the biggest things I try to keep in mind when designing the audio for a skin is "how do I make this skin shine as epically as possible and explore new creative ground while protecting gameplay at all costs". Eve has certain very key components that make her recognizable. One of them is her Q spikes. Another is the savage scream on her ult. Similarly, I also wanted to protect the cadence of her E. I really worked to dial up the pop awesomeness on her empowered E, and left the less damaging unempowered E less embellished on purpose: to widen the delta of impact between the two versions of her E. Note that the unempowered E still has new SFX - it's a subtler shimmery crystalline tail to inject some airy popstar flair into the ability, but I didn't want to go too heavy-handed. I hope this provides a bit of insight into why I felt it was best to make the design choices that ultimately shipped with the skin. Eve was one of my favorite K/DA skins to design, so my hope is that this helps folks understand that these sounds were made with the best play experience in mind. Also I really love nerding out about sound design too, and I appreciate that this thread was made because I love the passion. :)

Hi Tabel! That is truly a fantastic idea for a Santa skin, and seems like a match made in heaven for Braum. Unfortunately, for this skin, doing any new voice-over work was out of scope for the project. When it comes to recording new VO, it actually gets pretty complicated, and though as a sound designer I'd love to throw in a hearty "Ho, ho, ho" we have a different Braum voice in every single language, which would mean we would have to reach out to upwards of 20 Braums for each individual "Ho, ho, ho" or it would be one voice that is mismatched with all the other Braums. Haha, as you can expect, it gets a bit messy. However, maybe one day we'll give Braum his own legendary and we'll be able to get tons more of those irresistible chuckles we know and love from him.

Hey friends! Thanks for taking the time to post about this. Sorry for the inconvenience on this one! These wonky volume levels are an unfortunate by-product of a really giant under-the-hood audio engine upgrade that caused a couple things to go awry. However! We are totally aware and everything will be back to the correct levels that don't make us want to rip our ears off in 8.6. Sorry about that! The silver lining is that this upgrade unlocks us to be able to bring some really valuable audio clarity opportunities to LoL in the future.

Hi DJ Sona, Thanks for your feedback! There are currently no plans to add VO processing to Yorick. The idea behind this is that Yorick is still a human, whereas Vel'Koz is a void monster, so I think the processing suits him better. Yorick is simply wielding Arclight magic.

Hi Jun Long! Thanks for your post! I was the sound designer on Star Guardian Ahri, and although I wasn't the writer, I can speak a bit on her vocal direction. We all know and love base Ahri as a mature seductress, but one of the things that is so fresh and enjoyable about creating alternate universes for our beloved champions is that we can explore the "what if"s of reimagining them in a completely new way. That was the case of Star Guardian Ahri. As a Star Guardian, Ahri is supposed to be around 16 or 17. She's high school aged, but she's been around the block a few times as a star guardian and has lost some allies. With that in mind, she's young, but she's a confident leader to knows she's capable. Vocally, we wanted the VA to play her a little younger than base Ahri, which accounts for why she may sound and act a bit different from what we're used to. I do believe there's a lot of depth and complexity to her personality that starts to peek through after multiple games played with her. In regard to the laugh, our buddy KuroCaliber was spot on. The ojousama laugh is a long standing anime trope that we wanted to throw in as a fun reference for our players. The slightly over-the-top nature of it is part of the fun :)

Hi Malicious Metal, The recall music is from Tear of the Goddess, one of the tracks from the new Pentakill album. I wanted the musical phrase to span the course of the 8 seconds it takes to recall and end in a big resolving power chord. I'm actually making a tweak to it to make Kayle's vocal elements tail out a bit smoother, but yeah. In regard to the guitar shredding in the kit, we wanted to strike a careful balance between gameplay and shred, so that you could get the vibe (the buff activate on her empowered autos for example) but still have a kit that felt like Kayle.

We tried to blend her aggressive fiery elements with the kind of distorted feedback you hear from a guitar amp. It's fairly subtle, but it's in the tail of the sound :D

I've definitely seen an improvement in the quality of champion emotes over the years. If things like Star Guardian Jinx being overly chatty with her guns and troll emotes like Lux/Lulu laugh can be avoided, then I think Riot's design will be headed in a perfect direction. Muy pefecto.

Nobody besides Jinx should be hearing her first move lines. When we're designing the VO implementation of our champs and skins, we're looking for opportunities to support gameplay and also showcase the personality/story of the champion at the same time. We want to hit that sweet spot so they feel organic without being unnecessarily chatty. In the case of Star Guardia Jinx, I think she's a bit too chatty. That's good feedback!

For this year's SKT skins for example, the players told us what they wanted for concept/recalls/etc, so we were really able to personalize the skins to the taste of the players. If we're looking at scope, making an SKT skin isn't easier than making any other skin, it's an aesthetic choice. If it's not your cup of tea, that's cool too! :D

Players were telling us that they had a lot of loot boxes to open, and the long animations were simply too much to sit through when you wanted to open 10+ loot boxes, so when redesigning for the new client, we wanted to keep take that responsiveness into consideration. That being said, every patch we're bringing a lot of bug fixes, performance improvements, and animation/sound/polish to the new client, and Hextech crafting is an ever changing beast that may get further visual enhancements.

Hi friends! As Krabohod mentioned, Taliyah's W voice lines simply unintentionally broke somewhere down the line, and I wasn't aware until there was a discussion on the boards. Remember that if you notice VO or SFX missing, keep reporting those bugs here on the boards and your boy Zimber will fix 'em right up for ya. Agreed that her W quotes are some of my favorite lines or hers, and it's a bummer they were gone as long as they were! For the next patch, I've fixed them on her Freljord skin as well, and I've also improved the way they fire off (as right now they emanate from the rock, and that's well...a bit weird). Happy Taliyah mains make a happy Zimberfly. Catch ya on the Rift!
: Why does Riot like to use whispy-looking magic in their animations?
Wonderful question my friend! Most of the blue whispy magic that you see floating around the new client, champ select, Hextech crafting, and the corners of Summoner's Rift is the naturally occurring blue magic that flows through Runeterra. It's easily identified by it's characteristic sparkly, chimey, windy ambient sound. It can also be harnessed to power certain forms of Hextech technology. We've worked to define the visual aesthetic and sound of this magic as something distinctly Runeterran, that exists as a wild, organic, and naturally occuring force on Valoran, so I'm glad you're noticing it! I like nerding out about this stuff any excuse I get <3

The way that we trigger our voice lines is always being iterated upon. As it is now on Lux, the line triggers on cast, and the game doesn't differentiate between whether allies are around or not. However, this is really good feedback that I'll pass along.

Hi friends, When we're looking at bugs, we have to always prioritize gameplay impacting stuff, and this one, while super annoying, does not impact gameplay, so it's been lower priority. That being said, we're making a big push to fix tons of legacy bugs, so you should notice a substantial increase in the speed at which bugs are getting fixed.

It's a bit dated sounding to our 2017 gamer ears, buuut isn't that part of what the Arcade line is all about? :D

We're aware of the volume inconsistencies throughout the client, and we're looking forward to bringing you a much more tastefully mixed and balanced client (no more infuriatingly loud pick/ban quotes!) as well as highly customizable and granular control of different aspects of your volume levels, so you can tweak things to your particular taste. In terms of sounds playing while the client is in the background, we find that those sonic queues are crucial for players to not miss their turn when it's time to pick, ban, or chat with teammates. We all know how frustrating it can be when the last pick in champ select dodges because they Alt-Tabbed out to watch a cat video :)

Hi SleepySlayer, Just wanted to let the OP know that he/she gave me the warm fuzzies, but you're right that we could all do a better job of hitting these boards harder and closing the feedback loops with awesome players like yourselves. I do certainly try to address the critical feedback as well, especially in subjects that I feel qualified to speak on *cough* audio *cough*, but there's always room for more thorough engagement :)
