: Favorite Walk/Run animations: {{champion:201}} {{champion:432}} {{champion:427}} I picked these because each of them conveys the theme of the champion very well and matches their in game personalities. Braum gives off the feeling of confidence and urgency in his run. Bard gives the feeling of being divine since he is not running at all. He more or less floats along with a few intermittent steps. Ivern gives a very light hearted feel because of his jumpy long stride and almost floaty feel as well. Least Favorites: Champions that don't have a set sprint animation This is a general outlook on the question. The champions that don't have a sprinting animation are very apparent put against the likes of Sion, Galio and Eve. More specifically, the champs that have a very distinct or large motioned walk animation like Veigar or Blitz look very accelerated rather than just running. Whereas someone like Shen looks okay even though his normal run does not change when sped up. The champs that don't change their motion but the speed of the motion when increased makes it look off are my least favorites.
Great thoughts, thanks for sharing. As an animator involved in most of those that was my thinking too.

: My favorite running/walking animation is Evelynn's {{champion:28}} . Her walking animation fits her theme perfectly. Her running animation is perfect because it looks like a pursuit ready to (fatally) embrace the enemy. Blitzcrank's {{champion:53}} running/walking animations are my least favorite. His waddles make him look really stupid, and that hurts his serious skins a lot. His running animation is just his walking animation on steroids, which makes it look even worse.
Blitz has come up a lot, but I really don't think we can change that one much, its too iconic and would probably upset a lot of the Blitz mains. There is the iBlitz skin which has a toned down run anim

If so, I think PROJECT: Ashe has to have my favorite running animation in League, specifically when she's kiting (and I know this has a lot to do with her AA animation as well.) But I have trouble playing other Ashe skins because PROJECT just seriously feels like the most satisfying skin in the game to play. As a longtime Quinn main and a staff member of the Quinn Mains Discord, I agree entirely with your sentiment that Quinn's walking and running animations feel bad and very rigid. I'm not really sure of terms to use, but in Quinn's current walk/run animation, she's always got both hands on her crossbow and I think that really contributes to how she feels rigid. She's not really moving her arms and there's just not much expression. When viewed directly from the side, it looks like the goal was to give her that "bird" feel (which actually after looking at it, the colors on her classic model and the animation itself does a really great job of that) but when viewed from the game's camera angle a lot of that is lost. I'm not sure of whether it's in the scope of this project, but I feel like freeing up her right hand would open up a lot of possibilities. Maybe she carries her crossbow over her shoulder (like a baseball player resting the bat on his shoulder when approaching the plate) or holds it loosely in just one hand? Not sure how that would be able to transition into her idle and basic attack animations, though - I'm not an animator! Something like her hasted running animation, where her right hand is free... but in that animation, her right hand doesn't do anything, it's just trailing behind the rest of her body which again feels rigid and weird. I guess basically what I think is that freeing up her hands from just "carry the crossbow" duty might help make her walking animation feel like it has more character. Just base runs for now. The skins team polish up and create vastly improved runs when they can for some new skins

I like Aurelion Sol's animation, he is so dynamic, when you are going too fast and then you turn to different direction, he changes the way so gracefully. {{champion:427}} **Ivern** Same story as Bard. {{champion:164}} **Camille** This is so elegant, totally fits to her playstyle. **LEAST FAVOURITE** Choosing the least favourite moving animations isn't that hard as choosing the best ones. {{champion:25}} **Morgana** Her moving animation looks just weird. If she doesn't have legs she should float. Now it looks like her skirt is obstructing her to move. {{champion:133}} **Quinn** As a Quinn main I've noticed everything that people said here and I strongly agree. **#PleaseFix** {{champion:77}} **Udyr** He is running like his arms weight a tons. I guess he needs a visual update as well. {{champion:33}} **Rammus** JUST NOT OKAY AT ALL.
Great list. I feel Rammus might lose some of his identity, similar to Blitz if we changed it. The derpy runs on the old champs can sometimes end up being iconic

Soon as you start changing Idle poses it can have a big knock on effect causing changes to several other animations thus increasing scope. We can get away with tweaking runs fairly easily though.

That animation is in the game, it should happen after the first or second Q attack. Its a transition animation from end of the Q into Passive walk (so make sure your passive is up). Aatrox has many transitions since he has 4 possible states. Another fun one you can control yourself is with ctrl+5, you can sheathe/re-sheathe the sword. He does some fun transitions when you go from sword on the back to passive stance via ctrl+5.

The W was iterated on lots of times, something that scales up so much attack % has to be made a specific way to read well and feel satisfying. We initially tried the mount scratching with its claw but too much was going on for it to read well. Part of this then became the crit animation you see now, Kled jumps into the air, the mount scratches, he lands back on the saddle. We ended going for the downward strikes cause the pose shows a great moment of Kled and Skarrl working together, it reads well and they attack from top to bottom which is different from the rest of the attacks. If you look at all kled's attacks, on and off mount he does things differently, that was one of our goals for the animation suite - bring in as much variety as possible.

We wanted to make it feel like a stage performance when playing him, everything's exaggerated and has a flow to it, like a well rehearsed stage act. So when you come out of skills like the W and E for example, they have that transition flourish which leads into the walk, run etc. This helps give a sense of flow throughout gameplay, almost like every move is connected and confidently planned.

Thanks for comparing us to Disney! we take that as a huge compliment :) and we looooove all the Disney/Pixar work. At Riot, we like to make our animations as vibrant as possible and push motions as much as we can to give things as much life as possible, presuming it fits with the character. It takes a lot of iteration to get to the results you see on screen, sometimes we don't push things enough and it doesn't feel as satisfying as we think it could.

Sometimes you think you have something nailed, but then in-game, from the top down perspective it can feel off or isn't satisfying. For example, the basic attacks, if you compare them to ashe's attacks, they have a lot more 'punch' to them, you feel them more and they come across more impact-full. This takes lots of tweaking literally down to single frames of animation. Her joke animation where she shoots the bow with her feet was actually the E for a while before we iterated further and brought the wolf in. Thats how things can go sometimes as well, you make an animation for something and it gets recycled for something else when another idea is born and fits better.

And are you trying to create new roles through these concepts, and If so, do you have any radical ideas that you are hoping to implement with new champions?
Cheers. Were always trying to raise the bar technically where appropriate and add new elements of gameplay into LoL through our champion releases. There's no real gain for anyone if we release a champ that is the same as something that already exists in the game.

: I really love how Braum looks. Great job on him :) I have one question. Does movement animation with Poro strolling on Braum's shield have any special condition to occur or it's random? If it's random, frequency seems a bit to low.
The little easter egg that we had to remove, it ended up effecting gameplay and if Braum is ever used in the LCS this could be a serious distraction :( It was set to be random and only occurred like once every 1000 clicks.

I vote for wrestler Braum! just like hollywood Hogan but he would carry a half smashed table instead of shield :)
