Imagine thinking IO is bad just because pubs can't make him work.

They need to be viable vs one specific situation, not in general. League could have close to 100% of champions picked if they balanced everything like Garen by having "if his silence stops a enemy spell channel or hits a enemy that stopped a spell channel within .25 seconds, that enemy is stunned for 5 seconds and takes 100% more damage". Sure, Garen's still a joke in 99% of the cases but vs Katarina, Fiddlesticks, and Master Yi he's a absurdly stupid hard counter. Hell, they could boost the counter more (Garen now just instantly kills people channeling!) and nerf everything else. He's now something that might show up in pro, but only as a counter to channeling because he's completely nonviable outside of that counter pick. Garen is now technically viable since there are situations a player would pick him, but I think most players would agree that a champion only being viable vs a handful of other champions while being completely useless otherwise is pretty poor.

You have some odd ideas about how important counterpicks are in DotA. That sort of balance mechanism wouldn't make Garen balanced, it would make the champions like Katarina/Fidd etc completely unpickable. That simply isn't the case in DotA. It's more that heroes are used in multiple different roles, and that many different playstyles are viable in which different heroes excel. For instance, the reigning champion team OG was making waves during the group stages by picking a traditional support IO in the hard carry role. And they won with it, repeatedly. You want to pick big teamfight spells with long cooldowns? Great, Faceless Void, Enigma, Naga Siren, Magnus etc are all perfectly viable options. Want to pick more skirmishing heroes that can fight all the time and abuse the enemy long cooldowns? Axe just got a new persona skin, go for it. Pick Enchantress, Phantom Lancer, PA, TA, Meepo, Invoker, etc. Deathball strat sound good to you? Win lanes, group up and push? Juggernaut, Death Prophet, Venomancer etc can combine into a pushing nightmare. Just don't lose lanes, don't get blown up by wombo combo, and certainly don't get ratted. Speaking of ratting, if you want to split the map out and avoid major fights, pick IO, Nature's Prophet, Antimage, Lycan, Naga etc. Just don't get caught out or you're in trouble. Four protect one more your style with a superstar hypercarry? Spectre is your girl, or maybe Medusa, or Morphling. Buff up your super farmed carry and win in the mid game. Just don't let it go late, or the enemy might outscale you. And for the record, the group stages ended with 110 different heroes getting picked.

This thread is hilarious. All of a sudden people are crying about Riot because they see Eternals as being a money grab. Meanwhile, for the entire existence of the game, you have to either grind an impossible number of games or shell out cash in order to play a realistic number of champions and have accompanying rune pages. And keep in mind, your ability to compete in ranked actually partially depends on your available champion pool and rune pages. So you're literally at a competitive disadvantage as a new player if you don't pay money to buy a bunch of champions. But now, NOW is the time to complain about Riot's policies? Let's be honest, if you want a game that's both competitive and free to play, you have to have all champions available to all players. League has completely failed in that regard for the entirety of its existence.

Hero design can suffer a little because players just want something simple, unique, familiar, and balanced. Voices stay under-written because it gives the older feel that their player base enjoys. While I appreciate the similarities you're trying to convey here, I kind of have to strong disagree with your assessment of DotA at least. Many times Icefrog has completely shaken up the game. The 7.00 patch alone was unprecedented in how much it changed _everything_. There was a patch recently that gave every single hero an aghanim's upgrade that also shook up the game in a huge way. There are countless other examples through the years of Icefrog aggressively changing heroes to pursue a healthier game, regardless of how old the mechanics might be. I still don't like the blink dagger & the stealth blade, but they're necessary evils i guess. Better blink dagger than flash. Jesus, every time I play League I just cannot fathom how that spell continues to be in the game. Probably one of the worst game design decisions I've ever seen tbh. > [{quoted}](name=3TWarrior,realm=NA,application-id=yrc23zHg,discussion-id=jHipj68h,comment-id=00060002,timestamp=2019-08-09T18:11:43.313+0000) > > several from what i've heard. Actually, pretty much every champion that is not a support is EXTREMELY dangerous. There's one that hides in opponents, there's a spider that can turn invisible on webs she makes, a lot of stuff really Sadly broodmother no longer turns invisible while in her webs. > [{quoted}](name=Summoner SpeII,realm=NA,application-id=yrc23zHg,discussion-id=jHipj68h,comment-id=0010,timestamp=2019-08-09T22:37:10.482+0000) > > i remember trying dota 2, and the first thing is a was an awful interface filled with advertisements in champion select, and after a few games i quit, and to never return, and i believe league is a much better game. the item system and recalling was so confusing to me, and just zoned me from having fun. I'm quite confident that advertisements have never been a part of the game in this way. No clue what you might be thinking of tbh. I do think that the teleport scroll system as well as the courier system is likely the biggest hurdle that League players have in understanding the base DotA mechanics. > [{quoted}](name=ThatShinyPiplup,realm=NA,application-id=yrc23zHg,discussion-id=jHipj68h,comment-id=0012,timestamp=2019-08-10T02:23:23.434+0000) > > Imagine coming to the league boards to flaunt DOTA shit. > > Too bad league is better I'm playing both games atm good sir, and while I find Dota to be better, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy playing League every once in a while. Also, clearly not a bad topic to have brought up given the amount of actual discussion that has been generated in a day. People should know what Riot's competition is up to these days.
: Losing LP Due to AFK
Yeah Riot has a pretty outdated way of handling this sort of thing. In DotA for instance, if someone AFK's that early, if they don't come back in five minutes before any kills happen, the game isn't scored and everyone can leave. Also, if someone straight up leaves the game halfway through, people are allowed to leave, although normal mmr gains/losses still apply. Means you're not forced to continue playing a 4v5 if you don't want to.

Funny how much new art there is these days compared with way back then. I literally don't recognize a single one from this thread despite having posted what I'm guessing is hundreds of MF pictures in the past.

Ah yes Led Zeppelin, the sound of the 90's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKWHLxOU7YU great version of stairway btw with an absolutely sickening guitar solo by Page
: Sorry but Dota is more fun now.
Pretty sure this has always been true. There was that brief period where Icefrog went a little too ham with putting shrines everywhere that was pretty unenjoyable, but dota has been a continually great game for well over a decade now. Also, complaining that the map is too large? That's gotta be a first. The dota map is one of the most consistently lauded parts of the game.

: Dota 2 has Custom Maps/Game Modes
A fairly hyped RPG actually just got released on the dota arcade, I should get around to trying that out soon.
: what's the biggest moba after league?
I mean, they don't compare in terms of number of players, doesn't mean they don't compare in terms of gameplay. As a few people have mentioned, DotA is the clear #2 in terms of popularity, and it has a much bigger pro scene than League. It's the OG of the moba world, and is far more difficult to master, but also much better balanced. If you're looking to casually jump into a fun game every once in a while, stick with League. If you want to challenge yourself in a more nuanced and competitive environment, consider DotA. Also has some fun custom games in the arcade, oh yeah and it's completely free to play every single hero from day 1. No years of grinding or credit card required.
