Active engagement from those who do care would be the best metric. Comments on the various international forums (Reddit, Inven, Boards, etc.), likes and dislikes, player engagement during said streams (not just cheerleaders or players saying "thanks," but people critical of the content and choices?) I would still like an answer to my question, though. Are the players who were engaged with that content no longer worth the effort? > I totally understand the feeling if you were part of the small group that really appreciated the dev streams, but often times its really hard to justify sacrificing resources that could be used to benefit the whole just to service the few. Frankly, I think you meant "benefit the majority" and not "benefit the whole." Also, I don't get this "sacrificing resources" mentality. Has TenCent cut the budgets at Riot to the point where **everything** has to generate revenue or be worth the short term effort? Is that why Eternals, something that would normally be included as part of the free League experience, is currently planned to be put behind a paywall? If that's the case, should I be prepared for the dismissal of the Riot Narrative department? After all, not everyone reads those now well written and engaging stories. Hell, should I wait in fear while the data justifies the removal of most unpopular 25% of the champions in the pool, because they're never going to be worth maintaining, updating, and making new skins for? After all, that's what was used to justify getting rid of Twisted Treeline, Dominion, or the RGM modes. I ask because Riot now seems like a company that is solely driven by the data and not the players. > If you had any ideas on how to track and serve the few without drastically and negatively impacting the larger group I'd love to hear them! In what way does giving niche players looking for a unique, autonomous, and supported League-based experience (Twisted Treeline, Dominion, RGM, etc.) negatively impact the larger group? Were those other modes really preventing Riot from making new champs, or attempting to balance champs on the main maps? Does giving Urgot or Taliyah a skin every so often negatively impact Ahri and Lux players who already have plenty of options in the store? Does the data no longer justify the effort of making unpopular champs popular through a well-promoted skin line? (Context: Akali and Evelynn were unpopular champs before the promotion behind K/DA kicked in. Now, they're among the most played and owned champs worldwide. This would never have happened had the project lead listened to the data and not trusted her instincts.) Because if those niche players aren't worth Riot's time and effort anymore, you should do the humane thing and just say it. Don't give them the false hope that their voices mean anything anymore, if they ever did.

We actually used to do these on major releases (like champ releases). From what I heard they were a major time & cost investment for very little engagement, it was hard to justify the time :(. I'm sure if enough people requested and tuned in we would be down to do it again. Ultimately its about going to the mediums where players are :), not trying to force them to where is most convenient for us.

This is a solid question! I'll preface this by saying my response is _entirely a guess_, but tbh having run a business myself this is how I imagine the opportunity cost presents itself. A skin, regardless of the champ its for, will always cost roughly the same amount of money & time (for the sake of this example lets say it costs $600,000 and 9 months of work). So regardless if its for Taliyah or Lux, it costs the same to make. Now on the flip side Lux (as we know) is more popular than Taliyah and you can pretty safely guess that (again a guess here) that you can sell 1000 Taliyah skins OR 100,000 Lux skins. NOW - the profit from those skins goes pretty directly into: #1 paying your employees a good wage, #2 further development on things that are **less certain to make money, but could drive player growth and engagement** (and yes could potentially drive revenue to further fuel growth etc in the future). The opportunity cost of making a Taliyah skin vs a Lux skin is, in my mind, simply less finances, resources and time (money buys all 3 of those things pretty directly) to invest in things like new game modes, new champ development, new games (think Riot Game+S), and other things. Again, that is a super simplistic breakdown imho, but I think it highlights a couple really good concepts 1 - Nothing is free. Developers don't simply wave their wands and poop out content and games. It all costs money, time, blood, sweat and tears. To be clear I'm not saying that **its not worth it** to do things that dont drive revenue (for example Champ vgu's I imagine are a net negative revenue stream compared to skins. Again I **imagine** don't know for sure), but if a restaurant gives _all_ of their food & drinks away for free that restaurant would close down pretty quickly. They have to charge money for their work somewhere to stay around. 2 - I've seen a bunch of posts that Riot is "greedy and only thinking about money", and I can totally see and understand how and why it might feel that way (trust me I do). However, the other thing I think that example highlights is simply the fact that its not like Rioters are stuffing their pockets with dollar bills, but rather those funds (I prefer to view it as "trust" to use the [Jack Ma framework of thinking](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqmZsUbYIfA) ) are being invested to give players the games ya'll deserve. Thats the mission and drive myself and my team head into work everyday with. To make a game that is worthy of players time, affection, love, and passion. Hope this helps! Again, these are all my own thoughts and are **not** actual data in the slightest :), just an example.
> [{quoted}](name=Bazerka,realm=NA,application-id=yrc23zHg,discussion-id=0fzsz0ty,comment-id=00330000,timestamp=2019-09-01T22:10:18.933+0000) > _Deleted for brevity._ The examples provided in the first part of your reply only work if Riot Games was a small, struggling, independent game studio that needed profits to keep the doors open. Unfortunately, Riot is wholly owned by TenCent Games. They're the ones who keep the doors open, pay the salaries, and fund development of new champs and new games. Maybe TenCent is insisting on more revenue sources from Riot (which would better explain why Eternals and TFT are such a blatant cash grabs), but to say that skin sales solely fund everything else Riot seems sketchy. > 1 - Nothing is free. I don't believe that anyone is realistically saying "give us everything for free." That example is disingenuous to the topic at hand. Even so, most good restaurants do have options for vegetarians, seniors, and children that are supplemented by the main menu. After all, every customer that walks in those doors should be treated appropriately. Conversely, a good gaming company should want to have extra options available that appeals to non-mainstream players, choices that may not directly make money or seem worth the effort on the surface but get loyal player engagement nonetheless. Unfortunately, there are otherwise loyal and devoted League players who are being "data-driven" out of consideration for new cosmetics and things to get excited about because they enjoy those unpopular champs or niche maps. Twisted Treeline, and Dominion are gone because there weren't enough players (even though Riot did virtually nothing to promote said maps). Random Game Modes are gone because TFT made money and RGMs didn't. Taliyah mains (among others) are being actively shoved out of possible skin consideration because _Riot doesn't believe they're worth the effort_ of another Lux skin. And so on and so on. Riot was supposed to be a "player driven" company. Instead, it's become a "company data-driven for most of the players." > 2 - I've seen a bunch of posts that Riot is "greedy and only thinking about money", and I can totally see and understand how and why it might feel that way (trust me I do). Not Riot. TenCent. Then again, I've seen first hand some of the amenities Rioters have access to at your HQ and it's sometimes shocking. > However, the other thing I think that example highlights is simply the fact that its not like Rioters are stuffing their pockets with dollar bills, but rather those funds (I prefer to view it as "trust" to use the Jack Ma framework of thinking are being invested to give players the games ya'll deserve. Serious question. "Players" or "Mainstream players already satisfied with our content?" It seems like invested niche players are actively getting denied the options they enjoyed or would enjoy. >Thats the mission and drive myself and my team head into work everyday with. To make a game that is worthy of players time, affection, love, and passion. Again, it's difficult to take that sentiment at face value when so many "niche" champs (and their players) are treated so poorly. One side of the mouth continues to regurgitate that long disproven "we're for the players" line, while the other about "opportunity costs" and "Lux is so popular in China." Then again, maybe you guys _actually believe_ the line, despite everything happening around you. I dunno.

Morello no longer works directly on League itself. : Pyke hasn't been out for a year yet and gets a new skin
Yorick waited six years, three failed reworks, one realized rework intentionally designed to bury the champ deeper, and an extra year before he got a really lazily conceived and designed skin that most of the hardcore fans were beyond disappointed with. Urgot waited even longer and got an afterthought for his skin. (High Noon was all about Lucian and Thresh, while Urgot was just thrown in as an attempt to shut his fans up.) Pyke will get his. It will suck, it won't sell well, and Riot will be able to focus on more Ahri and Soraka skins because TenCent demands more money.

Sure, they could make a Pulsefire Camille, but it might looked like a forced and cynical job rather than something the team cared about. Take, for example, Arclight Yorick. Yorick went through over six years BS excuses about why he never got a skin, even after his rework, only for the team to force through a really mediocre "effort," done entirely by rookies on the team, with no sense of pride from the company. It was like the team said "Here's a f@#$ing Yorick skin, now stop meme-ing us!" Of course, there are people who genuinely like Arclight Yorick. I just stare at them and make sure I know where they are at all times.
: [Discussion] I wanted to ask something regarding character appeal to players
Old Yorick appealed to me because he was the "Anti-Champion." Everyone else was this "paragon of virtue" or this "evil among evils." They were the ultimate examples of their professions or skills... Then, you had Yorick Mori, a mortician/gravedigger who had greatness thrust upon him thanks to a magic shovel. Sure, he had helpers (his three ghouls) and he could make a clone that could survive death, but he did his work on his own. My personal appeal comes from my family, a successive line of blue-collar workers, and there's no more blue collar job than a digger. Yeah, he was ugly. Yeah, he nearly destroyed the game when it came out. Yeah, every single fucking person at Riot hated him and anyone who liked playing him. But he was the champ that got me into League and kept me around for a long time. New Yorick, conversely, has none of that. He's an adult version of that brat from _The Sixth Sense_ that carries half a statue's face on his back and talks to something that makes the Alien Queen look like Scarlett Johansson. His "monk" story has nothing to do with his kit or his gameplay, and the people at Riot still hate him, anyone who plays him, and everyone who has ever cosplayed as him.

Counter to that would be a champ like Yorick, who has multiple models in his kit (ghouls, wall, Maiden, mistball), and is considered "difficult" to make skins for. That, and the skins team has nothing but contempt for Yorick and his players. * **Where is the skin being marketed to?** - Less than a year after receiving an Ultimate skin, Lux received the Lunar Festival version with Warwick and Nasus. Why? Because players in Eastern regions liked Lux more than a "more deserving" champ like Taliyah. Ahri, being a sexy female based on Asian cultures, has the same appeal around the world. Same with Miss Fortune, Katarina, Sivir, etc... * **Do they want to make a skin at all?** - End of the day, the team is going to work on what they want to or what they're ordered to. If they're not ordered to work on Camille skins, it's not going to happen. I know this wasn't reassuring, but it's how Riot has presented themselves over the years.

: So I'm gonna be totally honest. (buckle up) When Pyke was entering pre-production, narrative was also looking at Nautilus's lore. He along with Fizz and a few other champs were still outliers from our recon / current lore. And there **was** concern Pyke was too close to Nautilus. But internally, our leads felt that Pyke hit the "revenant" thematic better than Nautilus. Then the plan was to change Nautilus's lore significantly-- prior to Pyke's release. --And actually they were going to change Nautilus to something I pitched to solve the problem. (Namely: Nautilus was a person seeking redemption within the cult of Nagakabouros. He was a man that had agreed to have his soul placed in a sacred golem. An extremely difficult and lonely duty working as a sentinel for as long as he could keep... going.) Internally teams loved it. **BUT** that pitch was then taken to players with a rather larger survey and... the players hated it. They wanted Nautilus to stay a revenant. Yeah. Uh.. oh.. By now Pyke was well into production (and VO) and it was uncertain how / who was going to fix Nautilus. (And I was on another project) My assumption was that Matt did not know what Nautilus was going to be (or that Naut was going to stay the same) when he wrote the lines for Pyke-- so he avoided the character-- because he didn't have anything to write towards.

If you change things about a beloved character, you need a damn good reason for it. You need to be able to defend it beyond "we had this cool idea" or "we wanted to score some political points." You need to give the fans a reason to trust you, **which is something Riot's Narrative department has NEVER done.** It's always been "please trust us" and "we're know asking for faith when we don't deserve it, but..." However, you guys have NEVER delivered on that trust or faith. Ever. > Times change. Character's that do not change are dead. They fall away forgotten. i.e. Batman has been: funny, Goth, dark, nippled, lego, and gloomily envious of superman. My dad loved the Adam West version and hated all others. I love the dark knight. There is no right answer. Only versions that are successful or not. If you really want to use Batman as an example, you're going about it ass backwards. Should I be shocked? The _tone_ of the Batman stories have changed from era to era, from amateur detective and vigilante (Early days) to goofy Silver Age mess (Bat-Baby), to campy silliness (Adam West), to brooding SOB (Dark Knight Returns), to impossibly intelligent and borderline paranoid (modern). However, the _character_ of Bruce Wayne (Billionaire playboy, philanthropist, carefree owner of Wayne Enterprises) and his origin story (Thomas & Martha Wayne getting shot in Crime Alley, criminals being a "superstitious and cowardly lot," and choosing the bat as his symbol because one flew threw his window one night) have not changed. The core ideas that Batman needs a fortune to fight his war on crime, that he's capable of being one-step ahead of his Rogues Gallery, that he can both out think and out fight his opponents, or that he can convince the "normal" world that he's not Batman, have not changed with the shift in tone. Change _any_ of those core ideas about Batman and you have a completely different character... You have Green Arrow. Also know that every time the tone shifted with Batman, there was a huge amount of backlash from fans. When he want from independent detective in the 1940s to campy goofball in the 1950s and 1960s, there was backlash. When Batman shifted from campy goofball to the dark and brooding jerk, there was a backlash. When he went from dark & brooding to what the Animated Series version was, there was backlash. Every... Single... Time... And, except for one year when someone else became Batman, the editors and publishers stuck to their batarangs because they believed that the changes were better. And they were right because they had current fans who thought the changes were good and incoming fans who only knew the new version. Let's bring it back to Nautilus. You guys had an _idea_ to change Nautilus, but you all weren't prepared to deal with the backlash or defend it. Maybe you guys realized the fans were right... Maybe Wenceslaus burned every bridge when he pushed for those political changes to Varus... Maybe it was going to be too much work to defend the changes and you all didn't want to try. All we know is that Pyke fans now have to suffer through a disappointing VO and a lore reveal that might explain the reasoning, but won't really justify it.

In all seriousness, why should players trust you (individually and as a group) to "do better in the future" when you're supposed to deliver highest possible quality content every time? With only 6 champs a year, there aren't too many opportunities for less than your collective best efforts...
: Ariel (AKA Thermal Kitten) has been sitting on this story for more than 18 months. We were looking for ANY opportunity to release it, and I'm so glad it's finally out there. Boom. Lore headshot.
Sorry, but 18 months is ridiculous even for an international mega corporation like Riot Games. Either the marketing boys need to step up their game or this stuff needs to be released sooner.

: Think about one change that would completely destroy the meta as we know it
Yorick becomes viable in top lane. Would destroy everything until the hotfix.
Joetri10 (EUW)
: Riot doesn't listen AT ALL to feedback (Confirmed due to Evelynn Skin)
Same feedback many Yorick fans left for the Arclight skin... similar response of "We hear you, but we're still doing this. Deal with it." I would say Yorick's worse off since he's not getting another skin until 2023 (if League survives that long), but it still sucks.
: [Discussion] What's your favourite Skin?
Pentakill Yorick. Favorite skin for my favorite champ.
: Publish that bad boy on your blog/website/whatever or post it here on boards, or both. We love a good fic.
Wait... two years ago, AntInOz and Jaredan both said that the company couldn't read fan fiction because of legal reasons (they might steal ideas that could lead to copyright problems...) Now, it's okay, that the team now enjoys a good fan-fic? What changed, if anything?

This should be twice a year. Halloween and Thanksgiving would be the best bet. (since Worlds is in October).

We're just looking for the best time to release pieces of content like that, which don't fit into the overall plan/strategy for story stuffs. In all seriousness, do you really need to have another Mt. Targon event to release an update for Soraka? Does Marketing really have that much control over what gets done by the creative half of the campus?

: Nautilus lore - what's most important to you?
1. **Size** - As big as Galio, but not nearly as happy or excited. Nautilus trudges the depths of Runeterra's oceans and experiences every agonizing, boring second. Whether that turns him into an Eeyore-like being suffering through a perpetual Monday or something far darker is up to you guys. 2. **Purpose** - Nautilus, given his size and power, should be considered a "Leviathan" kind of myth for sailors, pirates, and landlubbers. Every sailor worth their sea salt should have a "time I got away from Nautilus" story. The other aspect of this is: Is Nautilus just destroying ships at random or is he protecting Runeterrans from getting too close to something worse than him? (Kinda like that guardian of the time gate at the end of the first run of _Samurai Jack_.) 3. **Backstory **- This should be rumors (like Amumu), but from sailors who need to be really drunk to get the story out without their PTSD kicking in. Every encounter should also have some differing elements, based on the kind of story you're trying to tell. Perhaps a journalist or a chronicler trying to discover the identity of the original victim... 4. **Champion Interaction** - There should be some definite exploration with Fizz, Nami, and Illaoi (and Nagakabouros) as well as the surface champions of Bilgewater (Gangplank, Miss Fortune, Graves, Twisted Fate). Is Nautilus an enemy of Nagakabouros? Did Nautilus destroy Fizz's village? Does Nauti have something to do with Nami's moonstones? 5. **No Darkin backstory** - Enough said...
