"Garen's too strong at this point." No, no he isn't. But OK!

: [FOLLOWUP] Garen Juggernaut Update
I don't think I've ever really come to terms with the Villain passive. It feels like the amount of power in his kit that sits in its effectiveness could've been spent elsewhere or just made more interesting. The truth is that Garen never felt particularly overpowering to me before the Juggernaut fixes, and afterwards the major offender was that he simply had access to too much mobility and too many exceedingly useful things in Masteries. In lower ELO he has always been frustrating to fight against, but many champions at lower ELO are, quite honestly, kind of free. Malphite at low ELO is always going to be strong because his ult literally can win games in Bronze and Silver, that's basically a fact of life. Garen's super basic kit is going to make life a living hell for people who aren't good at positioning and laning at lower levels, that's another fact of life. But that's because the skill floor is real high: as long as you understand some basic concepts with him, you can be effective. Being able to beat a random Garen is probably a litmus test as to whether you ought to get out of lower divisions. As for the Villain passive itself, for me it's never been like, oh -- hey, there's the villain, time to blow them up. There's still targets I'm supposed to deal with first (spellcasters and people for whom silence will help begin the massive CC chains), and I will practically always deal with those targets first. I feel like the choice of going for the Villain is kind of a trap most of the time: either the character you were going to kill first was already the Villain, in which case it's obvious to go for them, or instead a suboptimal target is the Villain -- and while maybe going for them still gives you the 5v4 if you can delete them fast enough, it kind of encourages players to make often terrible decisions instead of sticking to the target you ought to have been focusing in the first place. It ends up with Villain just being a nice bonus when I'm off doing surprise assassinations or picks, just because I happened to catch the dude with the sword on their head. Or maybe I teleport gank bot lane that much better. It just really feels like the Villain passive is a band-aid for a problem he didn't really have, especially post the buff to his Judgment. I appreciate that you guys are exploring by adding huge subsystems to the games that make the game uniquely different for different champions (a great example of this can be Skarner, honestly, even if people feel his passive is kind of weird -- it's very interesting, which makes it sad that he's fallen out of favor). My problem with the passive is that **it's unclear what purpose it's supposed to actually serve**. Is it a comeback mechanic? If a team is ahead enough that Garen is irrelevant, is it supposed to give him a way back into the game by extending true damage to him on certain enemies? I guess it accomplishes that. What if Garen's already ahead? That means that all it gives is Garen a method to really shut down the enemy carry who might be trying to get their team back into the game. That doesn't seem very fun -- especially considering he can do that already if he lands a single Q. Right now, if your opposing top laner goes to help mid and gets a double kill, they're going to come back with a sword on their heads and be likely unable to lane against you. Where's the fun in that? Garen lost the lane and should be playing catch up, not suddenly find themselves rewarded for staying in lane by having sudden, magical kill pressure against his lane opponent. Now Garen maybe makes a play or the jungler rolls top and they get a shutdown kill, and the lane might suddenly be extra over. That seems like a huge swing. I was never really comfortable with that, and I basically rode the Garen gravy train last season to Platinum since my main was suddenly super swole AND had this silly passive (AND could die to his lane opponent with no fear because it actually **often made the lane easier**, which is kind of insane). I like the idea of giving the passive slighter bonuses around his kit rather than "welp, true damage now." What if killing the villain resets the cooldowns on his non-ultimate abilities? You're suddenly encouraged to go on them because you get to chain your abilities on enemies. What if the abilities were less to his power and more to his focus on eliminating the villain? Why not something like 50% tenacity against CC coming from the villain? Why not additional movement speed so long as you're walking at the villain? Maybe boost all the normal abilities instead: additional damage resistance from W from damage dealt by the villain, extended silence duration and/or more movement speed running at the villain when hitting Q? All damage calculations from E on the villain are treated as though it's single-target damage, regardless of how many units they're hitting? This feels like sufficient punishment and bonuses without it being like, oops, you can't mitigate this brand new, super-true damage, please learn to deal with it. Those bonuses also help in other ways and don't feel like just this huge raw power spike. I don't know, at this point I'm ranting. Repertoir is going to check out a paragraph in. I think I checked out a paragraph in. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu- Anyways, my main complaints with Garen right now: * He's still kind of binary -- he loses certain lane matchups exceedingly hard, and there's matchups where he's basically a free win. These did change because of the new mastery system, since lanes where he was originally expected to stomp are now either skill matchups or losses -- the amount of sustain available because of Grasp of the Undying has literally made a cadre of unviable laners suddenly OK in the top lane. * I feel like Grasp of the Undying is only necessary on him because it's the only really good mastery he can take. Everything else feels kind of ... bad? * Most lane matchups right now simply feel like he just wants to outscale you instead of fighting early. At least when he was a bully he wanted to just get buck all the time. Not sure if this is a reflection of my bad mechanics or lack of understanding of laning or if Garen is just legit being rewarded more for passivity than before. * Basically every metagolem right now outshines him (although you could do worse things than build Sunfire / Iceborn on him, frankly), and he provides limited utility in a world where your tanky top laner is expected to mostly bring percent damage and heavy CC to a fight. Even Darius is a better choice here. Darius seems like the only successful Juggernaut revamp in that regard. * He was crazy kitable and wasn't much utility before the Juggernaut change, but I understood that landing Q was a death sentence and thus why silence needed that nerf. Now his utility is nonexistent and his kitability is through the roof. Dead Man's Plate is not a very desirable buy on him now but sometimes too necessary. * W is a crazy-boring button that has too-obvious parameters for activation. Am I initiating? Hit it before the damage comes. Am I trading? Hit it to take less damage. Can it at least do something neat? I also think tying it to farm is still not a great idea since it over-punishes him for losing in lane, but I've given up on this particular fight. * His passive is still super boring. I kind of wish champions didn't have passives that encouraged no interaction. Garen's passive encourages no interaction. I also understand that his passive kind of has to be that way because the way he activates his sustain is part of the "gate" to him just wanting to go hamhocks YOLO all the time. * POPPY CAN STOP YOUR Q WHEN YOU DO THE LITTLE "LEAP" OH GOD SOMEONE FIX THIS What I think really works right now: * Holy crap does he hurt late game. * Late game regen is really powerful, and it feels like you can skirmish, disengage, and be right back to messing with people and they're still bleeding everywhere; this makes him kind of a ridiculous splitpusher because he can survive a lot. * He is still super mobile out of combat, especially with masteries right now, and I actually very much appreciate that (FEAR NOT -- I'M COMING)

: Mid Year Mage Updates - Malzahar Direction
Listen, I was really critical at first at how you guys wanted to handle Garen, but you guys ended up doing right by me (and by Garen, I feel) in the end. I think you'll find a way to make Malzahar better and more interesting, with good counterplay, without ruining his identity. Here's to Malz updates!

By that logic, killing an enemy player in lane or ganking them may be creating a negative experience for another player. Not ganking for a teammate even when they call for it might also create a negative experience for another player. As with everything, it's all in the eye of the beholder. You could argue that saying "nice gank" to taunt an enemy in all chat is toxic, and I'd say that the majority of the community would disagree with you! There's a limit to everything.
: > [{quoted}](name=nothingxs,realm=NA,application-id=cIfEodbz,discussion-id=B3UQGrNt,comment-id=0003,timestamp=2015-10-09T19:15:42.853+0000) > > I like researching enemy teams before I play and I like doing things like camping the lane with the heaviest losing streaks or bad tilt history. I also will suggest our jungler camp for someone on our team that is on such a streak, to get those players to feel better and get their heads in the game. I like players like you. Not good players themselves, and you waste time on lolking and crap like that instead of improving your own skills. Grats on bronze ^^
I reached Platinum by being solid in lane and in team fights, having a focused champion pool but a lot of champions I can play if my team needs anything else (I can play a lot of top laners at a Gold+ level and a handful of champs at Platinum+), researching enemy teams before a game and planning a strategy around them, etc. The ability to analyze a team and their weaknesses or breaking points beforehand is a perfectly valid skill. Plenty of professional teams scout out their enemies before playing to get a feel for where they may or may not be good. Also, analyzing my own team and bringing up their morale or spirit by paying more attention to them or being particularly nice to them is also a good way to keep your team's head in the game. Anyway, I didn't use lolking; it doesn't give much information. op.gg and carry.gg were my go-tos, because they summarize a lot of information very succinctly!
: So let me get this straight. You say mean stuff to your opponents to try and make them rage, but aren't toxic? How does that work exactly? The only good thing I've learned from you is that you're at least honest.
Toxic: "wow good job you <bleeping> <bleep> why don't you suck my <wow> <rude> <no, dude, why> and buy a <bleeping> tent why don't you camping <bleep>" Not toxic: "nice gank" One is basically you being a rager, the other is you poking at the bee hive above the enemy team from far away with a really long stick. Sometimes, bees fall on their head, and you win. :^)

Hi, You once called me out for talking about boners in all chat. That was the most toxic thing you saw me say, I was otherwise pretty neutral/positive. Jokes aside, I hope you guys found sweet people to take for the playtest!

I am very angry that I can't join in on this.

: How far do you go to win?
I like researching enemy teams before I play and I like doing things like camping the lane with the heaviest losing streaks or bad tilt history. I also will suggest our jungler camp for someone on our team that is on such a streak, to get those players to feel better and get their heads in the game. I also totally trash talk mid-game. People died to me while ganking me, so I either traded or went positive? All chat "oh, ok" or "ty". Did I dodge a gank, or escape a sticky situation? "bye" Anything that puts the enemy team on edge but isn't basically being toxic is fair game! Just gotta know where the line is.

That will synergize nicely with her innovative new "cops and robbers mini-game" which causes her attacks against the richest enemy champion to heal her for 10% of her missing health. : Danny is as crazy as he is talented. :P Always fun to work with him. It was pretty inspiring just to see how he works.
dude, The Hex Core is so my favorite song on the Pentakill album and I love the tropes it calls out (it sounds very much like TDS/Fragile-era NIN in some places); it was such a treat to hear that. the crazy part is how good that song is in the Pentakill album which is already loaded with awesome songs. it's one of my favorite things produced by Riot to date. A+++++

please tell me you will have another 1/2 songs in the vein of the hex core

Y'all better document this so I can get my learn on, thanks in advance RITO. You do know the LAN (latin american north) server is in Florida right? you could be playing with 20 or less ping. You only have to change 4 letters in a file and the game has all English when on that server
I'm fully aware. It's actually in Miami. I know where the datacenter is. That doesn't mean all my friends play in LAN -- they all mostly play in NA. I have an account on both servers.
: I love playing Quinn so I'm a tad worried. Can you tell me if they're changing her vault? It's the best part of her kit and she wouldn't be Quinn without it.
Don't be too worried. He was really responsive with the Garen changes and really cares about player input and feedback, so your champion's in good hands. Garen's fun as hell to play on PBE right now. Probably a little overtuned, so the period where we're all going ham for Demacia will be short-lived, but hey... that's life :^)

: 5.16: Juggernaut Reworks and Item Changes Discussions
I have a lot of feelings on Garen. I've cross-posted my bulletin-board thoughts over here from the Garen PBE thread. Bulletin board points on Garen to summarize my feelings on him right now: **His weaknesses are more glaring, so his strengths feel more irrelevant.** - More kitable than before --- E slow is too brutal; being able to stick to someone is far more valuable than bursty damage and it was already hard trying to get that close in the first place - Doesn't live anywhere as long to deal his damage anymore --- Not having tenacity on W greatly inhibits his ability to take damage when needed to tank and to try and make ANY kind of aggressive play when enemy team can kite - W being tied to a farm system penalizes Garen severely when behind / unable to farm --- Tying W's subsystem to farm is already obtuse; **we moved away from this kind of W on purpose, no reason to return to it!** - Silence is a much less reliable form of contributing to teamfights than before --- Q got touched the least so it has the least comments, really - E changes remove item flexibility on Garen --- Youmuu is now an item he sometimes wants to buy, but wastes too many stats --- Too many items already exist that Garen would love to buy if the stats didn't make it a waste (Frozen Heart, Sheen-based items, Righteous Glory) - Villain system is unique, but pointless --- "Quest" feature doesn't actually enhance what you might want to be doing in game (bullying lane, denying farm, split pushing, flanking) that might be beneficial; it's just a random damage bonus to a person who is doing well --- No other bonus is given VS villains, so it feels ultimately pointless / unnoticeable --- Having more damage VS a target makes whether Garen succeeds or fails in landing a kill on a villain really binary; either I got the jump on you and blew you up or you got away --- Feels strong when you do eventually blow someone up, but feels like a cop out -- why can't I just contribute to a fight the "regular way," by being strong and picking my targets and applying my silence to the right target and singling enemies out? Instead my contribution is "I can blow this dude up, woo" - Ult dealing true damage against certain opponents (Villain) is a cute idea but ultimately unnecessary --- Garen isn't Darius and shouldn't have to measure his identity against his, even if they're considered two sides of a coin - The "juggernaut" character type feels muddled; why is it necessary and what niche is it meant to fill? --- Right now it reads like "basically, imagine a champion that sucks at being a fighter, bruiser or tank" --- New itemization doesn't help anywhere as much as you'd think I almost feel like, at this point, you should give Garen some goddamn mana so that he can buy real items and just make his skills all better instead of these bizarre compromises. At least then he'll be gated by cooldowns and mana, which will massacre his identity, but at least give you room to work with these design levers. I hate the new Garen.
: Shoutouts to all the collegiate organizers holding it down and building gamer communities. Makes me wish I was in college now...
No, you don't. You really don't. It sucks here and no one wants to hire you. Except the college itself, sometimes. That's nice, I guess.
: Riven should lose her animation cancelling, it is giving her power that wasn't meant to be there.
I absolutely, completely, unapologetically _hate _ Riven, and I think doing this would absolutely gut her as a champion. The entire appeal of playing Riven is all the crazy things you can do with her mechanically. Her mechanical cap is insanely high and that's the kind of player she will appeal to. Like, if we're going to do anything at all about Riven, we could start by just removing her from the game entirely... :^)
: Gotta admit I was starstruck hearing about the Gary Gygax anecdote. Dude was co-creator on Dungeons and Dragons!
I played a hell of a lot of Dungeons and Dragons when I was in middle and high school, and I still occasionally hang out with a friend of mine to play whatever flavor of tabletop RPG he's got a hankering for at the time (it was Star Wars: Edge of an Empire, last), so that anecdote definitely brought a smile to my face.
: NA Server Roadmap Update: South Bridge pt. 2 & ISP Peering
Just to note -- if you guys have done something RECENTLY with Comcast in the South Florida region, the connection's actively gotten worse -- you may be experiencing the same bottleneck issues as WOW! and may want to peek into that. I can give more details, but ping has gotten significantly worse and I now experience packet loss and bad ping spikes. I do trust that Riot will get everything figured out in due time, though! THIS IS ALL INCREDIBLY FASCINATING AND I WISH I WAS PART OF THIS PROJECT WTF. Y'all better document this so I can get my learn on, thanks in advance RITO.
